Zhujiajiao from Hongqiao or NECC: a half day, an evening, and what else is close

The National Exhibition and Convention Center (NECC), Hongqiao Railway Station and Hongqiao Airport all sit on Shanghai's west side. From there, Zhujiajiao, a canal town on Metro Line 17, is only ten stops from NECC, two fewer than the Bund on Line 2 (5 · 18). The real question is how much free time you have. This page works for any show at NECC, not only the China International Import Expo (CIIE), and for anyone staying around Hongqiao. For the venue itself see our NECC page, and for the 2026 CIIE see the CIIE guide.

Zhujiajiao: the half day that fits best

Zhujiajiao (朱家角) is a canal town in Qingpu District with stone bridges and old lanes. Among the water towns it is the easiest to reach from NECC: you stay on one metro line, and you do not need a rail ticket. (Qibao is closer as the crow flies, but has no direct metro.) The public lanes are free to walk, and the paid extras (a garden, a museum, a boat) are optional (9 · Zhujiajiao).

Why Zhujiajiao and not Suzhou?

They are different days. Suzhou is a large city known for its classical gardens. It is a high-speed train ride: a tour-company guide gives about 25 to 35 minutes one way and RMB40 to 118 across seat classes for Shanghai to Suzhou trains in general, and does not say which Suzhou station each Hongqiao train uses, so check your ticket in 12306 (11). That is a rail ticket, a station at each end, and a garden visit, so it fits a full day better than a half day. Zhujiajiao is the smaller, slower option: you take a metro line that passes NECC, and no ticket is needed for the lanes (1 · 9).

Travellers also compare Zhujiajiao with Qibao. A July 2026 comparison on our place page says Qibao suits a quick street-food stop, while Zhujiajiao feels more like a classic water town with wider canals, boats and prettier bridges (Zhujiajiao). Gardens are the main reason to pick Suzhou. If the water, the bridges and a slow evening are the point, pick Zhujiajiao. Take your time.

How do I get there on Line 17?

From NECC, take the Line 17 train towards Xicen. Zhujiajiao station is 10 stops west (5). From Hongqiao Railway Station, where Line 17 starts, NECC is one stop, so Zhujiajiao is 11 (Zhujiajiao · 1). Shanghai Metro publishes stop counts, not ride times, and we have not timed the trip. For comparison, our place page estimates 70 to 80 minutes from People's Square, with a change at Hongqiao Railway Station and the walk into town, and that is our own estimate (Zhujiajiao). From NECC you skip the Line 2 half of that.

Leave at Exit 1. The operator's route to the old town is 220 m along Zhuxi Road, 920 m along Xiangningbang Road and 170 m along Xinfeng Road, which we calculate at about 18 minutes on foot (6). The operator's bus option is the 1510 from Exit 1 to Zhuhu Road / Kezhiyuan Road (the visitor centre), then about 490 m on foot (6). Travellers say the bus takes around 15 minutes and a taxi about eight (Zhujiajiao). A direct electric boat from near the station costs 40 yuan per the operator, 08:30 to 17:00, and travellers say it leaves from the left of Exit 1 about every 20 minutes (8 · Zhujiajiao).

What does a half-day route look like?

This is our arrangement of the place data, not a tested itinerary. It assumes you leave NECC after lunch. If you want the three-site pass, book it online before 08:00 that morning: the operator says the latest booking is 08:00 on the day, using a name and phone number (7).

WhenWhat
About 13:00Line 17 from NECC to Zhujiajiao. Take the 1510 bus or a taxi from Exit 1, or walk
14:00Exchange the booking for a paper ticket at the visitor centre, 555 Kezhi Garden Road; the desk is open 08:30 to 15:00 and the operator suggests exchanging before 15:00 (7). No booking, no pass: then skip to the lanes and a boat
14:00 to 16:30The gardens and paid sights first, because travellers say ticket checks stop at about 16:30 even though 17:00 is listed (7 · Zhujiajiao)
16:30Fangsheng Bridge (放生桥), the five-arch bridge, for the canal view. Sunset in early November is about 17:00; travellers' sunset times of 17:30 to 18:00 are for September and October (15 · Zhujiajiao)
17:30North Street (北大街) for a snack dinner. The former Qing post office is a paid sight, and travellers say paid sights stop letting people in at about 16:30, so go in earlier if you want to see it (Zhujiajiao)
18:30 to 21:00The riverside lights, which travellers say are free. Those times come from April to October 2026 posts; we have no November report (Zhujiajiao)
By 21:30Start back. The last Line 17 train from Zhujiajiao to Hongqiao Railway Station leaves at 22:33 (6)

A traveller's 3.1 km loop without backtracking runs Kezhi Garden, Hexin Garden, Fangsheng Bridge, a century-old teahouse, Helong Art Museum, a sauce garden, the post office and Yuanjin Temple, and takes most of a day (Zhujiajiao). The government's September 2026 district route uses Fangsheng Bridge as the main landmark, then follows North Street and the former Qing post office towards Yuanjin Temple and Kezhi Garden (Zhujiajiao). Other visitors in May 2026 walked the main street in under an hour and found the shops repetitive, so how long you need depends on how much you want to pay for.

From a traveller (a personal report, not an official rule): Small details from people who walked the old town. Posts from walkers between October 2025 and September 2026 add a few details. The entrance to Hexin Garden is easy to miss. The second-floor terrace of the Helong Art Museum looks across to Fangsheng Bridge. At the old post office you can write a postcard and post it from the town; one October 2025 post put a card at about 10 yuan and a stamp at about 5. Flat shoes with grip help, because the wet stone paving and bridge steps get slippery.

Xiaohongshu, 2026-09-14. Keep in mind: The postcard prices come from a single post (October 2025). We have not checked the post office opening hours.

What do I pay for?

We could not confirm whether the boats and paid gardens accept foreign cards or passports, because the operator's pages do not say (Zhujiajiao). Bring a payment app that works in China and some cash. See paying in China, or How to pay in China without WeChat if WeChat will not work for you.

What do I eat?

The district guide names two local foods: braised pork (扎肉) and meat-filled sticky-rice parcels (肉粽), with teahouses along North Street (Zhujiajiao). Travellers also name Apo zongzi, gorgon-fruit cake, shepherd's-purse wontons, crabapple cake and red-bean shaved ice. They say street stalls beat sit-down restaurants for zongzi and pork, and that the shops at the entrance and the riverside restaurants by Fangsheng Bridge cost more than places deeper in town (Zhujiajiao). Opinions are mixed: commenters on one post rated the zongzi average. Ask the price before you order, because cheap "special" dishes on restaurant boards are often not available once you sit down. Food venues keep their own hours, so a free town does not mean a shop is open late (Zhujiajiao).

Is Zhujiajiao a scam?

We would not call it that, but it is a place where cost depends on what you choose. The lanes are free, and the official guide says so (9). The money goes on optional things: a pass, a boat, snacks and drinks. What travellers actually complain about is value and prices. One May 2026 visitor found the shops repetitive and the 15-minute 200-yuan boat ride ordinary. Another post reported that cold drinks and ice pops cost more than in the city. A few posts describe booking the town in advance through a WeChat account or talk of charging; no operator or government notice confirms any of it, so treat it as unconfirmed (Zhujiajiao). On major holidays the town runs one-way routes with a queue at the entrance, and visitors report it packed on 7 October 2026, in the National Day holiday (Zhujiajiao). Our advice is to avoid holidays, ask prices, and pay for one or two things you really want.

Can I do Zhujiajiao in the evening after the show?

Yes, but it is a night walk, not a sightseeing visit. Closing time is set by each show: the one example we have is a 2023 trade show here that ran 9:00 to 18:00 (13). If your show closes around 17:00 and you go straight to Line 17, you should reach the lanes after 18:00. Here is what is open and what is not:

We found no operator notice about the lights, so check before you commit a whole evening to them.

From a traveller (a personal report, not an official rule): Evenings are quieter, weekend evenings less so, and November is cold. Two posts, from January and September 2026, say the old town is far quieter after dark than in the day, and that weekend evenings still fill up, so a weekday evening is the calmer choice. The September post suggests arriving about an hour before sunset and puts early-evening sunset at about 17:00 in November. A mid-November 2025 visitor found the day sharply colder, with a high of 11 degrees Celsius, and met many foreign visitors.

Xiaohongshu, 2026-09-10. Keep in mind: Single posts, not counts of people. The 17:00 sunset in November agrees with the figure used above.

Qibao: if you only have an hour or two

Qibao (七宝) is about 6 to 7 km in a straight line from NECC. There is no direct metro, and we have not checked a transfer route, so take a taxi (1). Qibao's own station is on Line 9, and travellers leave it by Exit 2 through the Link Square mall (Qibao); the Bell Tower plaza is a few minutes away. Our place page says the old streets are free, and puts the visit at 1.5 to 3 hours (Qibao).

What to do: eat tangtuan (stuffed glutinous rice balls) at No. 26 South Street, cross the Ming-era Puhuitang Bridge, and visit the Bell Tower plaza and Qibao Temple (Qibao · 12). A tangtuan costs about 5 yuan and a haitang cake about 7, per travellers. Small sights close around 17:00, while the street itself stays open, and the town is lit in the evening, with lanterns along the canal at dusk (Qibao). Reviews are mixed: several 2026 visitors found the old street much like any commercial street, and treated it as a short stop for snacks and the canal view (Qibao). The town sees more than 10,000 visitors a day, so a weekday is calmer (Qibao).

An evening downtown on Line 2

Line 2 runs from NECC to central Shanghai with no change. Stop counts from NECC are Zhongshan Park 7, Jing'an Temple 9, West Nanjing Road 10, People's Square 11, East Nanjing Road (for the Bund) 12 and Lujiazui 13 (5). Shanghai Metro does not publish ride times, so check your journey in a maps app.

Mind the clock. The last trains back towards NECC and Panxiang Road leave Lujiazui at 23:24, East Nanjing Road at 23:27 and People's Square at 23:30 (4 · 16 · 17). These apply to trains running towards NECC; if you stay at a hotel near the expo, aim for a train well before that.

An order that works:

1. Jing'an Temple (9 stops). The temple closes at 17:00, so after a show you will see only the gold roofs from outside. The pedestrian footbridge at Yan'an West Road gives the classic photo. (Jing'an Temple)

2. Nanjing Road (West Nanjing Road 10 stops, East Nanjing Road 12). The pedestrian street is a public street, so you can walk it at any hour, though shops keep their own hours; it is liveliest at dusk, with neon. Refuse friendly strangers who invite you to a tea festival or gallery. Side streets such as Yunnan South Road are cheaper for a sit-down meal. (Nanjing Road)

3. The Bund (East Nanjing Road, 12 stops). The city's lighting notice lists regular riverfront lighting from 19:00. (The Bund)

4. Lujiazui (13 stops). Travellers on our Bund page say a ¥2 public ferry crosses the Huangpu in about 10 minutes, that the Dongjin ferry stops before dark, and that the Dongfu and Taigong ferries run for night views (the Taigong ferry leaves from the North Bund, not the Bund itself) (The Bund). The Oriental Pearl Tower opens 09:00 to 21:00 with last entry usually 20:30, from ¥199 for two spheres, and its tickets are in your name, so bring your passport. (Oriental Pearl)

One warning for the waterfront, from recent visitors.

From a traveller (a personal report, not an official rule): On the Bund, say no to people offering a free photo. Three posts from late September to mid-October 2026 warn about people on the Bund waterfront who offer a free photo, or a picture with a costumed character, and then ask for money. The authors report travellers paying 40 to 60 yuan for heavily smoothed photos, with more charged for the originals, and say waterfront snacks and river-view restaurants carry a high markup.

Xiaohongshu, 2026-09-29. Keep in mind: Reports from travellers; prices are as reported and the posts do not name a particular spot on the waterfront.

Take the metro rather than a taxi in the evening if you can. An analyst in Shanghai for Auto Shanghai 2025 got stuck in rush-hour traffic on the way to a dinner in Hongqiao and wished he had taken the metro (14).

A free full day

Three combinations, each from our place data. Times are guides, not bookings. If you are still deciding how long Shanghai deserves, see How many days in Shanghai, Beijing, Xi'an, Chengdu, Chongqing and Hangzhou?.

1. All day in Zhujiajiao. If you want the pass, book it online before 08:00 that morning, then leave NECC or Hongqiao around 08:30 and exchange it at the visitor centre on arrival (the desk opens 08:30 and closes at 15:00). Do the gardens in the morning, since the paid sights stop about 16:30. Eat lunch away from the entrance and the riverside. Take a boat in the afternoon, watch the sunset from Fangsheng Bridge (about 17:00 in early November), see the lights if they are on, and start back by 21:30 for the 22:33 train (6 · 7 · 15 · Zhujiajiao).

2. Zhujiajiao, then Qibao. Zhujiajiao in the morning and early afternoon, then Qibao for its evening lights. Our place page gives about 70 minutes by metro between the two as a third-party route-planner estimate, so check live routing (Zhujiajiao). Qibao's small sights close around 17:00, so this is for the street and the canal view (Qibao).

3. Zhujiajiao by day, the Bund by night. Take the half-day route above, and leave Zhujiajiao by about 17:30, after the early-November sunset (about 17:00) (15). People's Square is 11 stops from NECC and Hongqiao Railway Station is the stop next to NECC, so it is 10 Line 2 stops from Hongqiao (5). You reach Nanjing Road and the Bund lights at 19:00 with time for dinner. You miss the Zhujiajiao lights, which is the trade.

Getting back to your hotel

If you come back from Zhujiajiao by Line 17 and want Line 2, change at Hongqiao Railway Station, not at NECC.

From a traveller (a personal report, not an official rule): Going back to Line 2: change at Hongqiao Railway Station, not at NECC. Two posts from August 2026 warn against changing from Line 17 to Line 2 at National Exhibition and Convention Center, because the two stations with that name are separate. One traveller who left the station and walked across to Line 2 took 17 minutes at a fast pace, through a quiet stretch of building-site hoardings and offices, and guessed 20 to 25 minutes at a normal pace; they had hoped to avoid the crowd at Hongqiao Railway Station and regretted it. The other lost about 30 minutes after changing one stop early, and said the route runs beside a vehicle road to a footbridge that goes well past the Line 2 entrance before doubling back.

Xiaohongshu, 2026-08-30. Keep in mind: Walking times are the authors' own; we have not timed the walk. Both posts describe the same transfer.

Our NECC page lists the full set of last trains from each station. A safe rule: be on a train an hour before the last one, and keep a taxi app ready.

What is checked and what is not

Zhujiajiao hours, prices and transport come from our Zhujiajiao page, which cites the operator and the Qingpu government and was last checked on 2 October 2026. Travellers' reports (lights, boats, food, crowds) are posts from September 2025 to October 2026 and are marked as such. Qibao figures were last checked on 13 October 2026. Distances and stop counts come from Shanghai Metro's published data. We have not timed any of these routes. Foreign-card and passport rules for Zhujiajiao's boats and paid sights are unconfirmed.
