Why go
Zhujiajiao (朱家角) is a practical water-town day trip by Metro Line 17. You can walk public lanes and bridges without a town-entry ticket, then decide whether to pay for a garden, museum or boat. The main reward is seeing the streets, shops and bridges organized around canals rather than another city skyline.
What to do
- Cross Fangsheng Bridge. Walk to Fangsheng Bridge (放生桥), the town's prominent five-arch stone bridge, for views along the canal. The 2026 district heritage route also links it to several smaller bridges.
- Follow the old lanes. Continue through North Street (北大街) and the former Qing post office (大清邮局旧址). The government route puts the post office, bridges, Yuanjin Temple and Kezhi Garden on one wider town walk.
- Choose a paid extra. Choose a paid extra after the free bridges: the operator lists a ¥60 three-site pass including Kezhi Garden (课植园), a canal rowboat from ¥200 per boat, or a ¥40 metro-station direct boat.
- Don't miss: From the crest of Fangsheng Bridge (放生桥), look along the canal toward the old North Street (北大街) rooftops.
- Best time: Start in the morning
- Skip if: Skip this half-day trip if you have only a short stop in Shanghai and do not want the extra Metro Line 17 journey.

Traveler tips
- Start with the free lanes. Zhujiajiao Ancient Town (朱家角古镇) public lanes are free. Walk to Fangsheng Bridge (放生桥) and North Street (北大街) first; the ¥60 three-site pass and boats are separate purchases. source
- Keep a route back to the station. Save Metro Line 17 Zhujiajiao station (朱家角站) in your map before crossing the canals. The operator lists the last train from Zhujiajiao toward Hongqiao Railway Station (虹桥火车站) at 22:33; ticket sales stop three minutes earlier. Walking back to Exit 1 takes about 18 minutes from the town entrance. A rowboat return to the original dock adds ¥100 per boat. Caveat: The operator traffic page does not show a timetable effective date; check live Line 17 service before a late return. source
- Try a local canal-side snack. The September 2026 district guide names zha rou (扎肉, braised pork) and rou zong (肉粽, meat-filled sticky-rice parcels) among Zhujiajiao foods, with teahouses along North Street (北大街). Use the Chinese name when ordering and check the stall's posted price. Food venues have their own hours; the free town access does not imply a shop is open at night. source
- Walk from Exit 1 via the post office. From Zhujiajiao station (朱家角站) on Line 17, use Exit 1. The operator route follows Zhuxi Road (珠溪路) for 220 m, Xiangningbang Road (祥凝浜路) for 920 m, then Xinfeng Road (新风路) for 170 m to the historic town; allow about 18 minutes on foot. Caveat: The 18-minute walk and street-by-street route come from the operator. The added note author used the station-area boat rather than walking this route. source
- Separate the station boat from the canal cruise. Near Zhujiajiao station (朱家角站), the operator lists a direct electric boat at ¥40 per ticket, 08:30–17:00. Inside town, rowboats carry up to six people per boat: North Street (北大街) dock A or B costs ¥200 one-way; Kezhi Garden (课植园) and City God Temple (城隍庙) dock A costs ¥200 and B costs ¥300. Confirm the dock and whether a return to origin adds ¥100 before paying. Caveat: The operator page has no visible 2026 tariff effective date; confirm the current station-boat fare and hours before purchase. source
- Wear shoes for uneven lanes. A March 2026 visitor recommends flat shoes with grip for Zhujiajiao (朱家角), especially on wet stone paving. The old lanes and bridge steps are better explored on foot than by rushing between shops; if it rains, slow down on the approaches to Fangsheng Bridge (放生桥). Save the station name 朱家角站 in your map before you set off so the return walk is clear. source
- Start at People’s Square with a transfer. From People’s Square (人民广场), ride Metro Line 2 to Hongqiao Railway Station (虹桥火车站), then Line 17 toward Xicen (西岑) to Zhujiajiao (朱家角站). Allow around 70–80 minutes to the station, then about 18 minutes on foot via Exit 1. Caveat: Central-city time is an editorial route estimate; check live Metro service. source
- Use the visitor centre for indoor sites. For the paid Zhujiajiao (朱家角) pass, the operator lists ticket exchange at the visitor centre, 555 Kezhi Garden Road (课植园路555号), from 08:30 to 15:00. The indoor attractions run 08:30–17:00; the public lanes remain accessible after ticket desks close. source
- Follow the public bridge route. In Zhujiajiao (朱家角), use Fangsheng Bridge (放生桥) as the main canal landmark, then follow North Street (北大街) and the former Qing post office (大清邮局旧址). The September 2026 district route continues toward Yuanjin Temple (圆津禅院) and Kezhi Garden (课植园); ask before entering paid indoor sites. source
