Why go
The Bund (外滩) puts two different sides of Shanghai in one view. On the west bank, you walk past early twentieth-century commercial buildings; across the Huangpu River (黄浦江), you see Lujiazui's towers. You do not need a ticket or an indoor reservation for the public riverside walk.
What to do
- Walk the historic edge. Walk Zhongshan East 1st Road (中山东一路) past the Peace Hotel (和平饭店), Customs House (海关大楼) and former HSBC Building (汇丰银行大楼); cross to the riverside platform to compare their facades with Lujiazui across the water.
- Compare both banks. From the west-bank promenade, face east toward the Oriental Pearl Tower (东方明珠) and the Lujiazui towers. Turn around to see the stone and Art Deco buildings on the Bund itself.
- Reach the north end. Continue to the steel Waibaidu Bridge where Suzhou Creek (苏州河) meets the Huangpu. The municipal walking route treats this bridge and the older building cluster as one continuous outing.
- Don't miss: At the Customs House (海关大楼), listen for the evening bell as the historic facades light up in sequence.
- Best time: Daylight for facades; 18:00–23:00 holiday lights
- Skip if: Skip peak holiday evenings if you cannot comfortably handle dense pedestrian crowds.

- 1–7 Oct 2026 from 16:00: East Nanjing Road station closes for boarding and exiting; use live Metro guidance.
- Dianping pins the south Bund by East Yan'an Road and estimates 730 m from Yuyuan Garden Exit 7; this is a different starting point.
- 30 Sep–7 Oct daily 16:30–23:30: ordinary taxis and ride-hail cannot enter the Bund vehicle-control zone. Arrange pickup beyond the cordon.
- East Nanjing Road Exit 2 and eight minutes come from one possibly promotional account and remain in a tip only.
- Editorial estimate to Chen Yi Square (陈毅广场): the government investigation describes about 580 m from East Nanjing Road station, roughly 8 min at 80 m/min; a specific station exit is still unconfirmed.

Traveler tips
- Start with the correct riverbank. The Bund (外滩) is the west-bank public promenade on Zhongshan East 1st Road (中山东一路), between East Yan'an Road and Waibaidu Bridge. If your map points to Lujiazui (陆家嘴), you are on the opposite bank. Walk the Bund first to photograph the Oriental Pearl Tower; cross later if you want to see the Bund buildings from Pudong. source
- Avoid a holiday crush. During 1–7 October 2026, reach the Bund (外滩) before the afternoon peak for a calmer walk. Cars cannot enter the controlled riverside zone from 16:30 to 23:30, and police may direct pedestrians through barriers; use Metro and follow the signed flow. source
- Use Waibaidu Bridge as a landmark. Waibaidu Bridge (外白渡桥) stands at the Suzhou Creek end of the Bund. If you enter from East Nanjing Road station (南京东路), walk north along the public waterfront until the steel bridge appears; then turn back or continue into the Suzhou Creek heritage route. The city tourism directory defines this bridge as the north boundary of its Bund listing. source
- Check the return route before a cruise. A paid Huangpu River cruise is separate from the free Bund (外滩) promenade. Identify the pier and departure time before paying; from 1–7 October the Dongjin ferry (东金线) is suspended 12:00–18:30, so it is not a cross-river fallback during those hours. source
- Replan the National Day metro return. From 1–7 October 2026, East Nanjing Road station (南京东路站) on Lines 2 and 10 closes entrances and exits from 16:00 until service ends. Use Line 10 Yuyuan Garden station (豫园站), which remains in service, and allow time for its crowd controls and the additional walk from the Bund (外滩). source
- Use Exit 2 only on a normal day. On an ordinary day, East Nanjing Road station (南京东路站) Exit 2 gives one reported route: walk east along Nanjing Road (南京路) toward the Bund (外滩) riverside platform. The author timed about eight minutes including one traffic light. Caveat: Older Korean and Japanese posts also name Exit 2. The eight-minute walk comes only from the original local guide; current exit access has not been checked. source
- Try a northern holiday viewpoint. A visitor posting on 1 October 2026 suggested reaching Zhapu Road Bridge (乍浦路桥) from Tiantong Road station (天潼路站) Exit 3, passing the Shanghai Postal Museum (上海邮政博物馆) along Suzhou Creek, then continuing to Waibaidu Bridge (外白渡桥). That visitor found space for skyline photos on that day. Caveat: Space reported on 1 October 2026 may change with crowd controls. source
- See the timed holiday lights. From 30 September to 7 October 2026, arrive at the Bund (外滩) before the Huangpu riverfront lighting begins at 18:00; lights are scheduled until 23:00. Face Customs House (海关大楼) and Peace Hotel (和平饭店) for the old facades, then turn to Lujiazui (陆家嘴) across the river. source
- Find a ride-hail pickup beyond the cordon. From 30 September to 7 October 2026, the Bund (外滩) vehicle-control zone bars ordinary cars daily 16:30–23:30. Do not pin a ride-hail pickup on Zhongshan East 1st Road (中山东一路) then; walk beyond the published perimeter or use an open Metro station such as Line 10 Yuyuan Garden (豫园站). source
- Use Metro during the tunnel closure. The Bund sightseeing tunnel (外滩观光隧道) closes 16:00–21:30 on 1–7 October 2026; on 30 September it closes 20:00–21:30. To reach Oriental Pearl Tower (东方明珠) at night, route by an operating Metro station. source
- Find a public toilet along the river. Between Huangpu Park (黄浦公园) and Xinkaihe Road (新开河路), the Bund (外滩) riverside platform has fixed public toilets spaced roughly every 300 m. Follow 公共厕所 signs or search 外滩晓厕 for the toilet map before settling at a crowded viewpoint. source
- Arrive before dusk on the Bund. Arrive before dusk to see the Bund (外滩) facades in daylight and after illumination. Check the current evening lighting notice before planning a late visit. Caveat: In a post published in September 2026, a Russian-language reviewer described some buildings switching off their lights around 22:00–23:00 during an early-May visit. This is one observation, not an official lighting schedule. source
