Why go
Qibao (七宝古镇) is the canal town you can reach in about 20 minutes from Xujiahui on Metro Line 9. It is small and busy rather than sleepy, but in two hours you can cross a Ming-era stone bridge, eat hot tangtuan dumplings and hear Suzhou ballads in a century-old teahouse. It is a good taste of a water town if you have no time for Zhujiajiao.
What to do
- Eat tangtuan on South Street. Queue at Qibao Old Street Tangtuan (七宝老街汤团), No. 26 South Street, for hand-made glutinous rice balls. South Street (南大街) is the snack street, with haitang cakes and white-cut lamb.
- Cross Puhuitang Bridge. The three-arch stone Puhuitang Bridge (蒲汇塘桥), first built in 1518, joins North and South Street. Stand on it for the classic canal view of white walls and black roofs.
- Listen in an old teahouse. North Street (北大街) has crafts and teahouses. Xi Tai Feng (西泰丰) is a surviving century-old teahouse where pingtan ballads are performed.
- Climb the Bell Tower. The Bell Tower (钟楼) at the town centre has a bell and wish plaques. It is lit up in the evening.
- Visit Qibao Temple and the shadow puppets. Qibao Temple (七宝教寺) has a café in its grounds and has a café in its grounds. The Shadow Puppet Art Museum (皮影艺术馆) stages shows on Saturday afternoons.
- Don't miss: The café inside the Qibao Temple grounds, a quiet spot away from the snack street.
- Best time: Weekday mornings or rainy days
- Skip if: Skip it if you are visiting Zhujiajiao or another larger water town; Qibao is smaller and more commercial.

Traveler tips
- Walk from Qibao station in ten minutes. Take Metro Line 9 to Qibao (七宝). A September 2026 blog says to leave by Exit 2 or 3, and the old street is a short walk away; the city's food guide puts the tangtuan shop on South Street about 910 m from the station. Follow signs for 七宝老街 and aim for the Bell Tower (钟楼) at the centre. Caveat: A tour-company guide gives Exit 1 instead; exit signage decides. The Japanese source supports an approximately 11-minute station-to-town walk, not Exit 2 or 3. (2 travelers) source
- Queue for tangtuan at No. 26 South Street. The city's food guide singles out Qibao Old Street Tangtuan (七宝老街汤团), No. 26 South Street near Fuqiang Street: glutinous rice balls wrapped by hand and served hot. Expect a queue at weekends. The shop's roots are traced to the Xianfeng era of the Qing dynasty. source
- North Street for crafts, South Street for snacks. The canal splits the old town in two. North Street (北大街) has craft shops and teahouses, including Xi Tai Feng (西泰丰), a century-old teahouse with pingtan (Suzhou ballad) performances. South Street (南大街) is lined with snack stalls: haitang cakes (海棠糕), white-cut lamb (白切羊肉) and sweet rice cakes. source
- Photograph from Puhuitang Bridge. Puhuitang Bridge (蒲汇塘桥), a three-arch stone bridge first built in 1518, crosses the canal between the two streets. Stand on its crown for the view of white-walled houses along the water. A September 2026 blogger recommends rainy days, when the street is quieter and the stone glistens. source
- Visit the Bell Tower. The Bell Tower (钟楼) stands at the town centre, with a bell and wish plaques. It is lit in the evening, and its cultural and creative centre sells souvenirs. Ask at the entrance for the current climb price. Caveat: One personal blog dated 25 September 2026 reported about ¥20; no current operator tariff was found. source
- Visit Qibao Temple. Qibao Temple (七宝教寺) has a café in its grounds, away from the busiest snack street. Check its posted opening and last-entry times before planning a late visit. Caveat: One personal blog dated 25 September 2026 gave 07:30–17:30 and 17:00 last entry; an operator timetable was not found. source
- See shadow puppets on Saturday afternoon. Qibao's shadow puppet theatre is on Shanghai's first list of intangible cultural heritage. The Shadow Puppet Art Museum (皮影艺术馆) puts on shows on Saturday afternoons, and on other days you can still see the puppets on display. Caveat: The Saturday show time comes from one September 2026 personal blog; a tour-company guide lists ¥5 while that blog says free. Confirm both before going. source
- Expect crowds; come early. The town receives more than 10,000 visitors a day and has over 300 shops, and the local government lists crowded streets among visitor complaints. Arrive before about 10:00 on a weekday. If you are carrying luggage, look for the lockers the town is upgrading rather than dragging a suitcase through the narrow lanes. source
- Help for foreign visitors is improving. In September 2026 Qibao announced foreign-language volunteers, bilingual signs and staff training with Shanghai International Studies University, after foreign visitors complained about finding their way. Prices vary between stalls, so ask before ordering. Most vendors take WeChat Pay or Alipay, and a tour-company guide says cash is accepted at most stalls. source
