Why go
Wuhou Shrine (武侯祠) is Chengdu's temple-museum for Liu Bei, Zhuge Liang and the other heroes of the Shu Han kingdom. The museum says it is the only shrine in China that honours a ruler and his minister together. Inside the ticketed area are painted statues, steles and cypress courtyards, plus the red-walled bamboo lane everyone photographs. Book a real-name ticket first; free Jinli Ancient Street next door is a separate stop.
What to do
- Walk the temple route. The suggested route runs from Han Zhaolie Temple past the Tang Stele to Liu Bei Hall, the Civil and Military Officials Corridor, Zhuge Liang Hall, Sanyi Temple, Huiling and the red-walled lane, ending at the Three Kingdoms exhibition room.
- Look into the Tang Stele shed. The Tang Stele (唐碑), carved in praise of Zhuge Liang, stands in its own pavilion early on the route. People queue to look inside.
- Read the officials' statues. The Civil and Military Officials Corridor lines up painted statues of the Shu Han court, each with a label in four languages.
- Pause in Zhuge Liang Hall. Zhuge Liang's statue sits in a niche under the 静远堂 plaque, flanked by statues of his son Zhuge Zhan and grandson Zhuge Shang.
- Follow the red-walled lane to Huiling. A curved red wall and bamboo line the lane to Huiling (惠陵), Liu Bei's tomb. The museum calls this the gentlest corner of the solemn complex.
- Don't miss: Your ticket covers the Cultural Relics Zone only. Jinli Ancient Street next door is outside it and free, though during major festivals such as the Chengdu Temple Fair it is temporarily folded into the event area.
- Don't miss: Bring the passport you booked with. At the South Gate, scan the QR code on your order.
- Best time: Opening hour; avoid midday

- foreignVisitors.payment.foreignCard: Current pages name only WeChat Pay, Alipay and cash; foreign bank cards at the self-service ticket hall are not mentioned. (searched: operator English ticket rules, operator Chinese ticket page, Trip.com Moments posts, reddit, Xiaohongshu)
- admission.free: The regular pages do not say whether foreign visitors aged 60 or over who hold only a passport get the age-60 exemption (the Temple Fair notice of 7 Feb 2026 excluded foreigners from it), or what West Zone entry requires. Traveler tips
- Book a real-name ticket up to 14 days ahead. Wuhou Shrine sells real-name tickets for the ticketed Cultural Relics Zone (文物区) on its official website or official WeChat account. Booking opens 14 days ahead, each document books one ticket per visit day, and the system shuts for maintenance from 23:00 to 01:00. The museum has never authorised another seller, so tickets bought elsewhere are not covered by the museum. Caveat: The Chinese and English booking systems both allow up to 8 people per account per day; an English information page still says 20. The museum sets a maximum capacity of 186,170 for the relics zone, West Zone and Jinli together (41,499 at one moment) and can stop selling or admit people in time slots as it nears that figure. source
- Book with your passport; pay by WeChat Pay or Alipay, or in cash at the window. Foreign visitors book with a passport on the English website or the official WeChat account. Online payment is by WeChat Pay or Alipay only. If you cannot use either, take your passport to the on-site service window next to the self-service ticket hall and pay cash. At the South Gate, scan the QR code on your order or in the confirmation email. Caveat: The English booking site is the current rule set (email registration, 8 people per account, hours 09:00–18:00 with last entry 17:00). An English information page on the museum's site still shows 09:00–19:00, no entry after 18:00 and 20 people per account, which the booking site contradicts. Passport handling in the WeChat account and the Chinese booking system's use of overseas phone numbers are not described. source
- Opening hours: read the dated notice. Standard hours are 09:00–18:00 with last entry at 17:00. The museum runs longer days in summer and for events, so the posted hours can differ. Check the dated notice before you go. Caveat: Summer extended hours (08:30–18:30, last entry 17:30) ran 1 May–7 Oct 2026. The museum's English booking site gives the same standard hours as the Chinese pages. 微光今天在干嘛 (15 April 2026) lists 08:30–18:00 with last entry at 17:00, half an hour before the operator's standard 09:00 opening, and Guts-l (June 2025) lists 08:30–18:30 with last entry at 17:30; the dated operator notice is the rule to follow. - Follow the official circuit through the temple. The museum's suggested route runs Han Zhaolie Temple (汉昭烈庙), the Tang Stele (唐碑), Liu Bei Hall, the Civil and Military Officials Corridor (文臣廊), Zhuge Liang Hall, Sanyi Temple, Huiling (Liu Bei's tomb), the red-walled lane and the Three Kingdoms exhibition room. The halls have steps and slopes. Caveat: Junpei (Journey Rambler, posted Dec 2025, visit date not stated) saw people queuing to look into the Tang Stele shed and found the Ming stele quieter. 微光今天在干嘛 (April 2026) gives the same sequence as a two-hour 'essentials' walk without backtracking. (2 travelers) source
- Keep your voice down in the red-walled lane. The curved red-walled lane (红墙夹道) at the entrance to Huiling is the shrine's best-known photo spot. The walls echo, so wait for the bend to clear and keep your voice down. Caveat: The red-walled lane is the shrine's best-known photo spot; quiet is requested, and the walls carry sound. source
- Foreign-language guides need a day's notice. Staff-led tours in English, Japanese or Korean last about an hour and cost ¥70 per person for 1–3 people, or ¥60 for 4 or more. Book a day ahead on 028-85568685. A free 10-minute audio guide in Chinese and English is on the museum's WeChat account (cdwuhouci), under Interpretation. Caveat: Prices are from the museum's English page, which is undated. source
- Statue labels are in four languages. The figures in the Civil and Military Officials Corridor have glass-front labels in Chinese, English, Japanese and Korean. Each gives the person's career, so you can follow the Shu Han cast without a guide. Caveat: Junpei (Journey Rambler, posted Dec 2025) did not state the visit date; the labels may have been updated since. source
- Your ticket does not include Jinli; Jinli is free. Your ticket covers the Cultural Relics Zone only. The West Zone and Jinli Ancient Street are other parts of the same compound, and Jinli is free to walk through. Caveat: Operator pages do not state West Zone admission rules. The museum says it has never authorised another ticket seller. During the Spring Festival temple fair in February 2026, 玉儿happy bought four shrine tickets, walked on into Jinli and found the two areas connected; anonymous replies on the note said the shrine, Jinli and Nanjiao Park were then run as one ticketed area, and that the Jinli gates only let people out. source
- Metro Line 10 stops beside the shrine. Take Metro Line 10 to Wuhou Shrine (Jinli) station, Exit A2; the shrine is about three minutes' walk. From Lines 3 or 5, get off at Gaoshengqiao, use Exit A and walk about ten minutes. Caveat: Jinli's site says Line 3 to Wuhouci station Exit A2, which does not match the museum's page; the museum names Line 10 Exit A2 and, for Lines 3 and 5, Gaoshengqiao Exit A. source
- Cancel unused tickets before 17:00. If you cannot go, cancel through the booking channel before 17:00 on the visit day to avoid a no-show. Three no-shows within 60 days block booking for 90 days. Used tickets cannot be refunded. Caveat: The English booking site says unused tickets can be refunded before 22:00 on the visit day (the Chinese rules count a cancellation after 17:00 as a no-show) and does not mention the no-show count. source
- Go at opening. Open at 09:00 and the relics zone is quietest early. Last entry is 17:00, so a late afternoon visit leaves little time, and large groups can fill the halls and the red-walled lane in the middle of the day. Caveat: Junpei (Journey Rambler, posted Dec 2025) met school groups on a field trip and expected holidays to be busier. No dated crowd counts are published. 微光今天在干嘛 (April 2026) puts the peak at 10:00–14:00 when tour groups arrive and suggests the hours after 16:00 as another quiet window, although last entry is 17:00; 假期 (June 2026) went on a weekday at 09:00, found very few people and got clean photos of the red wall. (3 travelers) source
- No smoking, no drones, no loudspeakers. Smoking, including e-cigarettes, is banned in the Cultural Relics Zone and the West Zone. Drones, musical instruments, loudspeakers and live-streaming sales are not allowed; bags go through security and flammables are taken at the gate. Shirtless visitors are refused entry. source
- New visitor centre has baby-care rooms and loan items. The renewed visitor centre has upgraded toilets and a mother-and-baby room, and offers reading glasses and walking sticks for loan. source
- If WeChat search fails, use the booking website. Searching WeChat does not always bring up the shrine's official account. Use the museum's booking website (whpww.cdwuhouci.cn), or search WeChat for Chengdu Wuhou Shrine Museum (成都武侯祠博物馆) and open the ticket menu. On quiet weekdays same-day tickets may still be available on arrival; on weekends and holidays book at least a day ahead. Caveat: 小红薯6055423C (August 2025) could not find the account in WeChat and found that same-day booking was possible on arrival; anonymous replies said they struggled to find it too, and one had followed a look-alike account by mistake. 微光今天在干嘛 (April 2026) names the account 成都武侯祠博物馆 and advises weekend and holiday tickets at least a day ahead because walk-up tickets sell out. The operator's page names the account 成都武侯祠. An anonymous March 2026 reply said foreigners without a Chinese phone number cannot enter the ticketing system; the operator's English booking site registers by email. (2 travelers) source
- Shared Chinese-language tours are cheap; refuse freelance guides. Chinese-language shared tours of about an hour can be joined at the entrance or booked online; they are the cheapest way to understand the halls and steles. Politely refuse freelance guides, expensive incense and pirated booklets near the entrance. Caveat: Prices as posted, all in Chinese: 微光今天在干嘛 (April 2026) lists an entrance group tour at ¥20 per person for an hour and a rental device at ¥20 with a ¥100 deposit; 假期 (June 2026) found the official shared tour at ¥30 per person hard to fill on a weekday, bought a 70-minute tour on Ctrip for ¥12 and calls the visit not worth it without one. momo (April 2025) paid ¥30 for the electronic guide and found it dull; Guts-l (June 2025) advises the free official app. The warning about freelance guides comes from one post (微光今天在干嘛). English, Japanese and Korean guides are the operator's paid service (¥60–70 per person). Anonymous replies in August 2026 rated the official guide poorly. (4 travelers) source
- Allow 1.5–2 hours for the shrine itself. Walk the ticketed temple area at an easy pace in 1.5 to 2 hours; the two-hour 'essentials' route covers the main halls without backtracking. Add Jinli Ancient Street for about three hours, or the whole compound for about four. Caveat: 假期 (June 2026) rushed through a 70-minute guided tour and says 1.5–2 hours is the right pace; 微光今天在干嘛 (April 2026) lists three routes of about two, three and four hours, matching the operator's suggested routes. (2 travelers) source
- Best if you know the Three Kingdoms story. Wuhou Shrine is mostly painted statues, steles and halls in cypress courtyards, with the red-walled lane as its best-known corner. People who know the Three Kingdoms story, or who take a guide, enjoy it most. If the history means nothing to you, it can feel plain for ¥50. Caveat: 嵌入式开发者 (December 2025) found it plain, like a garden, and suggested the ¥100 annual pass only for locals; 旅游小明白 (July 2026) calls it worth it only if you really want to go; momo (April 2025) found it dull. 假期 (June 2026) says it is well worth the trip with a guide. Anonymous replies on the December 2025 note were split between fans and others. (4 travelers) source
