Why go

The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding (成都大熊猫繁育研究基地) is the city's best-known place to see giant and red pandas in large landscaped enclosures. It is a working breeding and research centre, so pandas eat, play and nap on their own schedule. Entry is by timed real-name ticket, and the morning slot is the liveliest. Pick one gate before you book transport.

What to do

• Walk the Panda Villa area. The villa area sits near the South Gate and holds adult pandas, cubs and red pandas within a short walk. Panda Villa No. 6, home of the star panda Hua Hua, is closed every Monday except on public holidays.
• Ride the sightseeing bus. The base is much larger than it looks on the map. A one-day bus ticket works at every stop and links the villas, the nursery houses, the Panda Tower and both gates.
• Watch the red pandas. Red pandas have their own enclosures and are often the most active animals in the base. Many visitors name them a highlight.
• Climb the Panda Tower. The free Panda Tower (熊猫塔) looks out over the whole base. Reserve online first: entry is capped at 200 people.

• Don't miss: Bring the passport or ID you booked with. Staff scan that document at the gate.
• Don't miss: The Panda Tower is free but needs its own online reservation. It closes in bad weather.
• Don't miss: Hua Hua (花花) lives in Panda Villa No. 6, which is closed every Monday except on public holidays. Plan her visit for another day.

The base's rule for free entry at 60 and over is general, with no nationality condition, and its ID list for tickets includes passports, but it does not name foreign seniors. Its separate free-ticket list for veterans, disabled visitors and others needs certificates issued by Chinese authorities, which is a different rule.

Traveler tips

• Book a real-name time slot up to 14 days ahead. Book an online real-name ticket for a morning or afternoon slot (March to October: entry 07:30–12:00 or 12:00–17:00; November to February: 08:00–12:00 or 12:00–16:30). Booking opens 14 days ahead, one ID buys one ticket a day, and the base caps visitors at 85,000 a day. Visitors aged 60 or over and children aged 6 or under (or under 1.3 m) enter without a booking. Use the official WeChat account or mini-program, or an authorised platform such as Trip.com. Caveat: Unused tickets can be refunded through the original channel within 30 days from 17:00 on the visit day (rule in force since 27 August 2026). The base warns that tickets from unofficial sellers may not get you in or be refundable. • Book with your passport and scan it at the gate. Enter your passport details when you book, then carry that passport. At the gate, staff scan the original document in the 'original ID' lane; if you only have a photo of it, use the 'without original ID' lane. Staff may also send passport holders to a separate manual-check lane. Caveat: Sam (Jun 2026) and Home in the World (visit in 2025, posted Apr 2026) both booked on Trip.com; only Sam describes entering passport details when booking and scanning it at the South Gate, while Home in the World advises carrying a passport as ID. A 2026-08-18 local-media page (本地宝) says passport holders go to the manual lane, which differs from the base's own page. How the base's WeChat account handles passport sign-up is not documented. • Use the West Gate in busy periods. The base has two gates. The South Gate is the old, busier entrance; the West Gate serves the newer area and is usually quieter. The West Gate has no car park, so drivers leave the car at the Bolinghui underground car park and take shuttle D569. In holiday periods the base advises public-transport visitors to enter by the West Gate to shorten the queue. If Hua Hua is not a must, start at the West Gate; she lives near the South Gate. Caveat: Sam (Jun 2026) entered by the South Gate and headed straight to the Panda Villa area, which Home in the World (visit in 2025) places right next to the South Gate. Just A Morsel (May 2026) went in through the West Gate on a driver's advice and found it much less crowded, with active pandas. Xiaohongshu authors in February to August 2026 (汐 .xi, sortir, 伊媪姚, 宸昊然, 一二一二一) recommend the West Gate for visitors who are not chasing Hua Hua; 一二一二一 (April 2026) found the South Gate route long and uphill. During the 2025 and 2026 National Day weeks some anonymous replies said the West Gate also had queues of an hour or more, so crowds there are not guaranteed to be light. (6 travelers) source
• Be at the gate at opening. Be at the gate when it opens: 07:30 from March to October, 08:00 from November to February. Pandas eat their morning bamboo then, the queue moves before the main crowds arrive and the heat has not built up. Holders of afternoon tickets should not arrive before noon. Caveat: Sam (Jun 2026) advises arriving 30–60 minutes before the gates open and found the queue already long; Passport Nomads (Apr 2026) arrived just before 07:30 and joined a line to scan tickets. Home in the World (visit in 2025) entered on an afternoon ticket with no queue and still saw cubs active. Reddit visitors in 2026 saw pandas eating and playing in the morning and asleep by mid-afternoon; a ride-hail from the city was easy from 06:00. Xiaohongshu: 叨叨叨 (January 2026) advises arriving at opening or after 12:00, because the Star and Moon nurseries put the cubs out in the sun around 08:00–09:00 and 14:00–15:00 and pandas nap between 10:00 and 14:00; 伊媪姚 (August 2026) found the first stop's outdoor yard not yet prepared at 07:30. • The star panda has the longest queue. Hua Hua (花花, officially 和花) is the base's best-known giant panda, and her enclosure has the longest queue. Go to Panda Villa No. 6 (六号别墅) first at opening, or skip the line and watch pandas at the quieter enclosures. Caveat: A news report from 5 Oct 2026 saw a sign reading 'two hours or more'; one visitor joined the line shortly after 08:00, waited two hours and found the panda lying down. Sam (Jun 2026) found the line already huge shortly after opening and chose to skip it. Reddit visitors reported about 30–35 minutes (weekday, about 08:30), about 30 minutes (March) and about 1.5 hours (a Tuesday morning); some skipped it and still saw many pandas without a line. Xiaohongshu: 伊媪姚 (August 2026) was told by a guard that Hua Hua usually goes back inside around 09:00–09:30 when it warms up, comes out again for a while in the afternoon, and that the queue takes about two hours; 小红薯694F42E2 (August 2026) says Villas 3 to 6 close when it is above 25 degrees and advises reaching the Sun Nursery stop before 08:30 if you want her. 宸昊然 (July 2026) heard other visitors lamenting that Hua Hua was not on view that day. • Hua Hua's villa and the art gallery close on Mondays. Panda Villa No. 6 (六号别墅) and the Panda Art Gallery (熊猫美术馆) close every Monday except on national public holidays. The villa closure is a trial rest-day arrangement. Come on another weekday if Hua Hua or the gallery matters to you. Caveat: The base's visitor-information page words the villa closure as a trial arrangement. The Hua Hua link comes from Sichuan Online (18 May 2026), which says the twin pandas Hua Hua and Hua Ye still live in Villa No. 6 after being separated. source
• Metro Line 3 plus a shuttle bus reaches either gate. For the West Gate, take Metro Line 3 to Junqu General Hospital (军区总医院), leave by Exit B, and walk about 20 m to shuttle 409. For the South Gate, take Line 3 to Panda Avenue (熊猫大道), leave by Exit A and board shuttle 408; or ride to Zoo Station (动物园) and take bus 655 or 87. Caveat: The base's page puts the 409 ride at about 10 minutes, while a Chengdu traffic-police notice reported by Chuanguan News says about 3 minutes. The Chengdu Bus report lists Exits A and D at Panda Avenue for shuttle 408 and says some core stops have extra card readers and that QR payment is available. • A taxi from the centre costs about ¥40. A taxi from Chunxi Road takes 25–35 minutes and costs about ¥40; from Chengdu East Station it takes 25–30 minutes and costs about ¥40. The base estimates about ¥100 from Shuangliu Airport and about ¥200 from Tianfu Airport. At the South Gate, street taxis and ride-hail cars use separate stretches of Panda Avenue, and ride-hail picks up at the marked A–D bays. Caveat: Chengdu traffic police announced the ride-hail zones on 24 Sep 2026 (reposted on ifeng). Passport Nomads (Apr 2026) paid about ¥40 by Didi. • A ¥30 bus ticket covers the whole base for a day. A one-day sightseeing bus ticket costs ¥30 and is valid at every station; children aged 6 or under or under 1.3 m ride free. Two routes run end to end, South Gate to West Gate and back. Buy the ticket in the official WeChat account up to 14 days ahead or at the base on the day, and after reaching either end gate, queue and show the ticket again to ride on. Caveat: Passport Nomads (Apr 2026) wrote that the ¥30 ticket covers five rides; the base's page says it is valid at any station on the day. Home in the World (visit in 2025) bought a ticket on site and advises walking at most two areas if you skip the bus. 小红薯694F42E2 (August 2026) says you can get on and off at any stop, any number of times, in either direction. Queues for the bus can be long: 汐 .xi (February 2026) waited about 30 minutes after lingering for photos at the first stop; sortir (22 February 2026, the sixth day of the Lunar New Year) was told at 08:15 that the line would take at least an hour and walked instead; 椰椰奶冻 (April 2025) skipped the bus and walked about 10,000 steps in a West Gate loop. • Foreign seniors were let in free on a passport scan. Foreign visitors aged 60 or over have shown a passport at the gate and entered free, without a booked ticket. The senior line moved faster than the ticket line early in the morning. Carry the passport and keep a ¥55 ticket as a fallback. Caveat: Two separate February 2026 Reddit visitors, Ginstwin (r/chinatravel) and swabiadenovo (r/Chengdu), both describe this first-hand; a third commenter (thundergooses) only advised a mother over 60 to turn up with her passport and gives no first-hand account. The base's rule for free entry at 60 and over is general, with no nationality condition, and its ID list includes passports, but it does not name foreign seniors. The separate free-ticket list for veterans, disabled visitors and others needs certificates issued by Chinese authorities; that is a different rule and does not apply to seniors. • Reserve the free Panda Tower slot first. The Panda Tower (熊猫塔) is free but needs an online reservation, one code per person. It opens 09:00–17:00 with last entry at 16:30, and entry pauses when 200 people are inside. Visitors aged 60 or over show ID instead of booking. The tower can close in bad weather. source
• Lockers, water and loan strollers are free. Both gate visitor centres have free self-service lockers, and staff can store oversize items. They also lend strollers, wheelchairs, umbrellas and walking sticks, and have mother-and-baby rooms. Drinking-water points around the base give cold water, and some give hot water. Caveat: Home in the World (visit in 2025) found the washrooms clean and water dispensers frequent. source
• English audio guide and signs help foreign visitors. Rent a self-service audio guide for ¥30 a day for the whole base, or ¥20 for the museum only, by scanning a WeChat or Alipay QR code. Choose Chinese or English; no deposit is needed. The signs that exist are in Chinese and English, and the base's website has English ticket, transport and guide pages. Caveat: The rental flow needs WeChat or Alipay; payment with an overseas bank card at the kiosks is not described on the base's pages. • Expect long lines in national holiday weeks. In national holiday weeks the South Gate queue starts early, the sightseeing buses and the Hua Hua enclosure have long lines,. It stops letting people in when 36,000 are inside at once. Take the earliest slot you can get, enter by the West Gate if you come by public transport, and allow extra time for buses. Caveat: The figures are from the base's holiday notice published 16 Sep 2026. Reddit commenters in July and August 2026 advised waiting until after Golden Week. nancy (3 October 2025, National Day) wrote that shuttle tickets were bought but the line was too long to board and that everything was far; anonymous replies on that note disagreed about whether the West Gate or the South Gate was worse that day. • No flash, no feeding, and a few banned items. Do not use flash, shout, feed the animals or throw things into the enclosures. Drones, roller skates, skateboards, scooters, hoverboards and bicycles are banned, and pets are not allowed except certified guide dogs. Unlicensed paid guiding is banned, and livestreams, flash mobs and commercial filming need the base's permission. The base can bar visitors who break the rules. source
• For the West Gate, send the ride-hail to the Yulei Road bus stop. Ride-hail apps usually default to the South Gate. For the West Gate, set the drop-off to the Yulei Road–Cuiwei Road bus stop (玉垒路翠微路口公交站) and walk about 300–400 m to the gate; the same stop works for the ride back. Caveat: These pins were used between February and August 2026. Roads near the West Gate can be closed to cars on public holidays; check the traffic notice. 汐 .xi (February 2026) writes that ride-hail cars cannot stop at the West Gate itself; a May 2026 anonymous reply says a driver let them out partway because the small road could not be entered. • From the West Gate, ride the bus first and walk back. One West Gate route that works: enter at the West Gate, take the lift down to the bus starting station, buy a ticket and ride to Star Nursery (星星产房) before the crowds arrive. Then walk Star Nursery, Xinghan Hall (星汉馆), the Panda Salon halls (熊猫会客厅), Hillside Red Panda Nursery (山丘小熊猫产房) and Moon Nursery (月亮产房), 5–8 minutes apart. Ride back from the Panda Salon stop. Caveat: Station and hall names are translations from the Xiaohongshu posts. 心平气和牛肉丝 (July 2026) took 2–2.5 hours and saw at least 25 pandas; 汐 .xi (February 2026) rode past the first valley stop and returned to it at the end; 伊媪姚 (August 2026) continued to the Villa 1 and Villa 4 to 6 area; 小红薯694F42E2 (August 2026) rode straight to the Sun Nursery stop for Hua Hua. The first stop's outdoor yard may not be set up at 07:30, and the bus line can be long (see the bus ticket tip). (4 travelers) source
• Ignore touts at the gates; there is no VIP lane. Near the South Gate ride-hail drop-off, people may offer an electric tricycle to the visitor centre for ¥10 each and claim it is 2 km away. It is only about 200 m, a few minutes on foot. Offers of a fast-track or queue-jumping guide are not real: there is no VIP lane, and the base bans unlicensed paid guiding. Caveat: The tricycle story is one visitor's account (痴奀, May 2026), who paid on boarding; anonymous replies on that note described similar offers, including a ¥50 guide. For the VIP lane, the base's ticket page says not to believe any paid fast-track entry claim, and its visitor-information page bans unlicensed paid guiding. source
• Eat before or after, or carry snacks and water. Stalls outside the West Gate sell breakfast. Along the West Gate route there are air-conditioned rest points with drinking water near Star Nursery, and a restaurant near the Panda Salon. If you would rather not buy inside, carry snacks and a water bottle. Caveat: Views on prices conflict: 一二一二一 (April 2026) paid ¥28 for an orange drink that tasted artificial and advises bringing food, while Nessie的种子 (July 2026) found the noodles at the service points fairly priced and not worth carrying food for. sortir (February 2026) bought a sandwich outside the West Gate for ¥7 and spent about 20 minutes on a meal inside. • Hot days send pandas indoors; cool mornings are best. Above about 25–26 °C, many pandas move into air-conditioned rooms or glass houses, where you see them through glass or not at all. In summer, the first two hours after opening are best for pandas outdoors. In cooler months and late autumn they stay out longer. Caveat: Reddit visitors in July 2026 saw only one or two pandas in the hottest weeks, and one was caught in heavy rain on the day. 小红薯694F42E2 and 糯米小糍粑 (August and September 2026) give the 25–26 degree threshold; 伊媪姚 (August 2026) says pandas are mostly in air-conditioned rooms after about 09:30; 汐 .xi (February 2026) saw most pandas outdoors in winter. • Allow at least three hours; the base is much bigger than it looks. Plan on at least three hours. A West Gate loop with the bus can take 2–2.5 hours; walking the whole base can take six hours or more. The next hall can be a kilometre away, so choose a few areas rather than trying to see everything. Caveat: Reddit visitors reported from about two hours (a family with bored children) to eight hours (wandering the whole base). sortir (22 February 2026) entered at 08:00 and was still not finished at about 14:00 on foot; 心平气和牛肉丝 (July 2026) gives the 2–2.5 hour West Gate loop with about 25 pandas; 椰椰奶冻 (April 2025) allowed three hours for a West Gate loop on foot. • Leaving by the South Gate: shuttle booth next to the exit. A shuttle bus booth beside the South Gate exit runs downtown, and ride-hail picks up from the gate area. Between the base and Tianfu International Airport, allow about 80 minutes by metro before waits, so start early. _Caveat: Reddit: loulou_mtl (October 2026) left at about 11:30 and took the shuttle booth; omchan (June 2026) and others used Didi from the gate area at around 13:00; MoronLaoShi (July 2026) gave the 80-minute airport estimate and undergroundknitting (July 2026) stored luggage at the airport, took a taxi and spent about five hours at the base on a hot day. At the West Gate ticket check, scan the code to open the base's e-map, pick the halls you want and it plans a walking route toward the South Gate exit.
