Why go

Shaanxi History Museum’s main building near Xiaozhai holds archaeological collections from the region’s long history. Its ordinary admission is free, but a timed reservation is required; the main museum and the separate Qin-Han branch have different entry arrangements and tickets. This page covers only the main building at 91 Xiaozhai East Road.

What to do

• See the main galleries. Use the main building’s permanent archaeology and history galleries to trace Shaanxi’s dynasties.
• See the Hejiacun treasures and the Tang murals. The Hejiacun hoard display (Hall 4) is a free special display inside the main building. The Tang mural treasures hall is a separate paid exhibition on the east-side lower level.
• Find the South Plaza entrance. Go to the main-building site on Xiaozhai East Road and follow the entrance signs for your booked time slot.

• Skip if: If no reservation remains, you can still enter without one if you are 65 or older, or use the museum’s online exhibitions.

• Reservation checks the original document used to book against the visitor. Limits: one order per ID per day, at most 4 orders per ID in 30 days and 3 per WeChat account in 7 days; one pre-filled entry holds up to 5 visitors.
• If you miss your slot and do not cancel before the last check-in of that slot, it counts as a no-show: the Chinese guide says bookings are blocked for 180 days from that day; the English page says two or more no-shows in a calendar year lead to a 180-day block.

Traveler tips

• Choose the main museum. In the 陕西历史博物馆 WeChat account, select the main building at 小寨东路91号. The Qin-Han branch is a different site and its admission does not admit you here. source
• Set a 17:00 reminder. The main building releases free timed slots five days before the visit at 17:00 China time. Keep passport details ready before release, then reserve the intended day and period. source
• Use the official account. The museum names its own 陕西历史博物馆 WeChat account as the main-building reservation channel and says it has not authorised paid third-party ticket bundles. Search the exact Chinese account name in WeChat. source
• Carry the booked document. The museum compares each reservation with the original document used to book it. Bring your original passport and the reservation record to the entrance. source
• Do not confuse free with walk-in. Ordinary admission costs nothing, but a time-slot booking is still needed for most visitors. A sold-out screen does not turn the free museum into a gate-ticket venue. source
• Use Xiaozhai or Dayanta. The official English guide lists Xiaozhai on Lines 2 and 3 at about 778 m and Dayanta on Lines 3 and 4 at about 834 m. Allow around ten minutes on foot after leaving the station. Caveat: The official English guide lists Xiaozhai and Dayanta stations. One April 2025 visitor (一厘鲸) wrote Dayanta Exit A or Xiaozhai Exit E and walking from either; this single, older account does not settle which exit is closest. source
• Check the hall charges separately. The free general ticket is separate from any special gallery or guided service. Decide whether to add a paid display only after checking its own current price and access rule. source
• Follow the booked time. The official guide says to present the reserved identity document at the time-slot check. Plan travel around that slot rather than only the museum’s closing time. source
• Pre-fill your visit before 17:00. Follow the 陕西历史博物馆 WeChat account, open 门票预约 → 参观预约, and pre-fill your date, session and visitors (up to 5 per entry). When slots release at 17:00, open the pre-filled entry and press 预约; a pre-fill alone is not a booking, so confirm the result under 订单查询 (Order Inquiry) and 成功订单查询. Caveat: Menu names are from the TripChina guide (updated Sept 2026; the site has affiliate links); the pre-fill steps and “success shown on the successful-order page” are from the museum’s guide. source
• If the main building sells out. The Qin-Han Gallery in Xixian New Area is a separate venue where visitors enter without a reservation on their original ID; non-mainland visitors may use a passport, and staff check it on site. It is open 08:30–18:00 with last entry at 17:00 and is far from the main building, so decide before travelling. Caveat: Museum guide and holiday notice (hours unchanged for the holiday periods); the TripChina guide makes the same point. source
• An online paid-exhibition ticket also covers entry. If you buy a ticket online for the paid Tang mural treasures hall (or a paid special exhibition) you do not need to reserve the free main-building ticket as well. • Release is 17:00 and low season is easy. Visitors booked on the WeChat mini-program at the 17:00 release; in April all but the last slot (1,400 left) filled within about 42 minutes, but a reminder at 17:00 was enough for several people. • Five tickets per booking. One pre-fill holds up to five visitors, and one ID can hold only one order a day, so a group of six books two orders using different people’s IDs. Fill in traveller details beforehand and be on the booking page before 17:00. • Seniors aged 65 and over need no reservation. The museum lets visitors aged 65 and over in without a reservation: present your original valid ID at the entrance. Everyone else needs a booked time slot, checked against the original document used to book. Caveat: Rule from the English visitor page (Chinese page: seniors swipe an ID card). Southporter, a 73-year-old, reported that at Spring Festival 2026 he and his wife showed passports at the ticket office without a booking and were ushered to the front; whether foreign seniors qualify by passport is not stated by the museum, and the same visitor said busy periods may not be as accommodating. The museum does not say whether a foreign passport counts as the valid ID for seniors (its Chinese page says seniors swipe an ID card). source

• A missed slot blocks booking for 180 days. If you cannot come, cancel in the WeChat order page before the last check-in of your slot. A no-show blocks that ID from booking for 180 days. Caveat: The Chinese guide counts a single no-show; the English page says two or more in a calendar year. Plan as if one is enough. source
• Keep retrying the 预约 button after 17:00. Pre-fill your visit before 17:00. When slots release, keep pressing 预约; if it says failed, go back one page (not to the home page) and press it again, dozens of times if needed, and once it shows “booking in progress” leave the screen alone until it turns to success. Returned tickets can appear in the following minutes. Caveat: 頭不大 (2025-11), 清风明月我 (2026-07), cemfox (2026-08) and 冷淡白开水 (2025-04) each describe the loop, with different details (a slider may appear; success can show only in the order list). Unnamed commenters in Aug 2026 say the pre-fill query now allows only one time slot and that many attempts still fail; 冷淡白开水 and 頭不大 also say one ID can hold only 3 pre-filled plans. • For passport holders: a Trip.com bundle in 2024. In 2024 foreign passport holders were told the WeChat account had no passport option and to buy on Trip.com an international ticket that bundles the Tang mural hall, about €20 (US$21.5), collecting the ticket at a window on arrival. The museum’s current guide lists passports as valid for its own WeChat booking, so check which route works for your date. Caveat: Three Xiaohongshu posters from September 2024 (四叶的四夜, 英文哲理诗歌鉴赏, CHINAPEDIA); 四叶的四夜 also had one passport missing from the on-site ticket records and it was fixed at the window; a Hong Kong poster (吃菠菜的罐头, 2024-09) had a Trip.com order cancelled because the pass type was read as mainland — choose “passport” as the document type. Unnamed comments in 2024–2025 say Trip tickets can take days to confirm and one says the listing disappeared. A 2026-04 post copying the museum’s text says passports can be added as visitors on the WeChat route. (3 travelers) source
• Start with the Hejiacun treasures, then work back down. A 2025 visitor’s route to avoid the crowds: begin in the ground-floor treasure hall (Hall 4, with the agate cup, dancing-horse flask and gold bowl), take the lift by the gift shop up to Hall 3 and Hall 2, and finish in Hall 1. Caveat: 一厘鲸 (2025-04) gave the order; 棒棒糖123 (2025-07) confirms the treasures are in a separate hall with two items in the basement display. The layout and the opening of halls change; the museum’s 2026 holiday notice lists the permanent halls 1–3 and the Hejiacun display in Hall 4.
