Why go
Xi’an City Wall forms an elevated route around the old city, with gates, watchtowers and views down the street grid. Start at Yongning Gate on the south side to see the principal gate complex and climb onto the ramparts. This entry covers the ticketed wall and its gates, not the free ring park below or Yongxingfang.
What to do
- Enter at Yongning Gate. Use the South Gate (永宁门) for its gate complex and long published opening hours.
- Walk the ramparts. Look down both sides of the old city and its surrounding moat as you travel along the raised wall.
- Compare the towers. Spend time around the gate architecture before continuing to the long, exposed straight sections.
- Best time: Late afternoon for softer light
- Skip if: If stairs, exposed sun or uneven surfaces are difficult, the free streets below may be a better choice.

- Passport accepted: yes — The operator’s notice of 1 July 2026 (republished by Shaanxi Daily) says foreign visitors exchange a paper voucher at a window with the document they booked with and are face-checked at the gate; it does not name passports explicitly.
- Since 1 July 2026 the City Wall checks entry by face scan or Chinese ID card and no longer by e-ticket QR code. Foreign, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan visitors who buy online take the document they gave when booking to an offline ticket window to exchange a paper voucher; at the gate they scan the voucher and pass a face check. They can also buy and register at a window.
- Two Reddit travellers (July 2026) bought wall tickets at the ticket office by the South Gate without pre-booking; one said ID is required, so bring a passport.

Traveler tips
- Start at the South Gate. Yongning Gate (永宁门) is the principal South Gate and the operator publishes its 08:00–22:00 access hours. Use the gate name in your map app because the wall has many separate entries. source
- Treat other gates separately. The wall is long and its gates need not use the South Gate timetable. Choose the gate you will actually enter and confirm its own closing time before travelling there. Caveat: The operator page lists only the South Gate hours; other gates’ times are in non-operator sources. source
- Foreign visitors: buy online or at a window, then exchange a paper voucher. Entry is by face scan or Chinese ID card; the e-ticket QR code was dropped in mid-2026. Foreign visitors who buy online take the document they booked with to a ticket window to exchange a paper voucher, then pass a face check at the gate; they can also buy and register at a window. Two travellers in summer 2026 bought at the South Gate ticket office without booking, and one said to bring a passport. Caveat: From the operator’s 30 June 2026 notice republished by Shaanxi Daily, and two Reddit posts. The notice does not name passports; the ticket price is not in it. - Choose a short section first. The circuit is much longer than a brief city stop. Walk one stretch from Yongning Gate before deciding whether to continue or hire a bicycle. source
- Keep the wall and gate show separate. An evening performance at the South Gate is a distinct activity. A daytime wall ticket should not be assumed to include a performance seat. Caveat: Performance access was not established in the operator page read. source
- Ask before renting a bicycle. Bicycle availability and return stations can change. Check the posted rental rules at the gate before starting a one-way ride on the rampart. source
- Gate closing times: three agree, three conflict. Yongning (South) and Jianguo gates stay open to 22:00 in every post that lists them, and Zhongshan to 22:00 in three of four; Anyuan, Changle and the corner entrances close at 20:00 in all. For Anding (West), Wenchang and Hanguang gates the posts disagree between 22:00 and 20:00. After 20:00 a gate that is closed to entry may still let you off. Caveat: 西引力旅行 (2026-05) gives 22:00 for Yongning, Hanguang, Anding, Zhongshan, Jianguo and Wenchang and 20:00 for the two corners, Anyuan and Changle. 瑞瑞瑞睿 (2025-11) gives 22:00 for Yongning, Zhongshan and Jianguo and 20:00 for Changle, Anding, Anyuan, Wenchang, Hanguang, Shangde and the corners. A hotel-marketing post (2026-08) says only Yongning and Jianguo run to 22:00. tang.org.cn (content farm) says 22:00 for Wenchang and 20:00 for Hanguang, Anding and Changle. Wenchang is therefore 22:00 in two sources and 20:00 in two; Hanguang and Anding are 22:00 in one and 20:00 in two. None is from the operator. (2 travelers) source
- You can still get down after closing. If you are on the wall after closing, five gates have night staff to let you off: Yongning North, Changle (east), Anyuan (north), Anding (west) and Zhongshan. Note which one is nearest before you start a late loop. Caveat: Sources are a Bendibao page and a Qunar agency post; not operator-confirmed. source
- Adult ¥54, reported by recent visitors. Four visitors from November 2025 to July 2026 list the adult wall ticket at ¥54. The operator page read shows no price. Caveat: 瑞瑞瑞睿 (2025-11), 小成妈妈在成长 (2025-12), 虾堡日记 (2026-06) and 微光心程 (2026-07). Posts list half price for students (¥27) and say seniors and young children are free, but none says whether those rules cover foreign visitors, so do not assume free entry for foreign seniors or half price for foreign students. - Walk-up tickets worked in July 2026. Two visitors in July 2026 bought tickets at the gate near the South Gate on the day and did not need to book. If the app will not take your passport, buy at the ticket office. Caveat: The tang.org.cn pages (content-farm, non-operator) say that since 2025-09-23 tickets are real-name only through the 西安城墙景区 mini-program, up to 7 days ahead, with no windows, while another page by the same site still lists on-site windows; the July 2026 reports match the window version. Chinese Xiaohongshu posters buy through the 西安城墙景区 mini-program or the 遇见城墙 account and swipe their Chinese ID, one (虾堡日记, 2026-06) booking ahead; 濮钰带娃看世界 (2025-05) says no booking is needed. - Evening runs until 22:00 from the south gates. The wall is open to 22:00 at the main gates and can be walked in south, east, north and west sections. Take Metro Line 2 to Yongning Gate (永宁门) and aim to enter before 22:00. Caveat: From a 2026 travel-agency guide (commercial); the operator page read covers only the South Gate hours. source
- Bike rental is bought on top of the wall. Bike rental is a separate purchase on the wall itself, west of the South Gate, and needs no pre-booking. A short stretch above the gate is no-cycle because of vendor stalls. Caveat: Bikes were described as worn; no pre-booking was needed. (2 travelers) source
- Bike rental has a 65-year age limit. Posted bike-rental rules: no children under 12, and no one over 65, may ride or be carried; 12- to 18-year-olds need an adult (a tandem or two bikes). One 73-year-old visitor was refused a rental after showing passports at Spring Festival 2026; on an earlier visit the same person says the 65 limit was not enforced. Caveat: The 12 and 65 limits are from 小成妈妈在成长 (2025-12); 林家小九妹 (2026-01) gives the under-12 and 12–18 rules; Southporter is the only first-hand case of a refusal, and enforcement was described as stricter around Spring Festival. - First thing in the morning the wall is empty. A visitor who went first thing in the morning had the whole wall to themselves; heat and crowds build later. source
- Short south-wall walks: Hanguang to Yongning, or Wenchang to Jianguo. Two short routes from the 2026 posts: Hanguang Gate → Wumu Gate → Zhuque Gate → Yongning Gate takes about 20 minutes and passes the Hanguang Gate Tang-wall museum; Wenchang Gate (next to the Beilin Museum) → Hepingmen → Jianguo Gate takes about 30 minutes. A walk of the classic Yongning → Wenchang → Hepingmen → Changle → Zhongshan stretch takes about an hour. Caveat: 林家小九妹 (2026-01) gives the 20- and 30-minute routes; 瑞瑞瑞睿 (2025-11) and 虾堡日记 (2026-06) give the hour-long classic walk; 西引力旅行 (2026-05) gives a 2–3 hour classic route from Yongning to Jianguo; 微光心程 (2026-07) says the full circle on foot takes 6–7 hours and the sights concentrate near the South Gate. Several posts add that the wall has little shade, so go near sunset in summer. (5 travelers) source
- Re-entry with the same ID, but wait an hour. A wall ticket lets you leave for a meal or a metro change and come back the same day by swiping the same ID. One January 2026 visitor says the second swipe only works about an hour after the first, and advises using the official ticket rather than a resale listing. Caveat: 林家小九妹 (2026-01) gives the one-hour rule during the lantern festival; 微光心程 (2026-07) says re-entry is allowed at any gate, while 濮钰带娃看世界 (2025-05) says the ticket is tied to the gate point chosen when booking and changing gates means a refund and rebuy. One hotel-marketing post claims two days of re-entry and an unnamed commenter calls that false. Not confirmed by the operator. (3 travelers) source
- Bike rental in 2025–2026: ¥45 for 3 hours, ¥100 deposit. Three Chinese visitors and a 2026 guide quote about ¥45 for 3 hours for a single bike and ¥90 for a tandem; late return is charged per 10 minutes. Kiosks stand next to the gates, and at the Yongning Gate there is about 1 km that must be walked before you pick up a new bike. Caveat: momo (2025-09), 小成妈妈在成长 (2025-12), 大猫和狗健康 (2025-11, price table in an image) and 微光心程 (2026-07) give ¥45 for 3 hours. The deposit is ¥100 in momo and 小成妈妈; 濮钰带娃看世界 (2025-05) says ¥300. From 18:00 one post says bikes can only be rented and returned at the South Gate (长安小丸子, 2025-11). (5 travelers) source
- A full bike circle takes 1.5–3 hours and the surface is rough. The wall is 13.74 km round. A quick ride took 1 hour 20 minutes (13.9 km), another visitor needed 2 hours 50 minutes including photos; the surface is uneven, a tandem is hard to steer and has to be pushed on steep ramps, and there are few toilets. Caveat: 大猫和狗健康 (2025-11), momo (2025-09) and 小成妈妈在成长 (2025-12); unnamed commenters repeat that saddles and bumps are painful. Several posts advise not riding at midday in summer. (3 travelers) source
- Walk to the South Gate first to see the drawbridge. If you buy at the North Gate entrance of Yongning Gate, do not climb at once: walk along the ground to the South Gate square, from where the drawbridge and arrow tower show in full, then come back up the stairs. The South Gate stretch is also the place for the Bell Tower view along the central axis. Caveat: 窗边的柏树 (2026-07) describes this order after climbing straight up; 小成妈妈在成长 (2025-12) and 大猫和狗健康 (2025-11) both say the South Gate has the drawbridge, barbican and the Bell Tower photo spot.
