Privacy policy
Last updated: 2026-10-06
China Footnotes (chinafootnotes.com) is a free, read-only guide for first-time visitors to China. Will Wang runs it and is responsible for this policy. Contact: will@chinafootnotes.com.
In short
- No accounts, sign-up forms, advertising, analytics scripts or tracking cookies. We do not build profiles or sell data.
- Like any website, the services that deliver it see your IP address. They are listed below.
What is involved, who receives it and for how long
- Visiting the website or using the connector. The IP address, browser type, address requested and time of each request (for connector calls, these come from your AI assistant's servers rather than your device). Received by Cloudflare, which hosts the site and protects it from abuse, under Cloudflare's privacy policy. We do not keep our own access logs.
- Fonts. Website pages load fonts from Google Fonts, so your browser sends your IP address and browser type to Google, under Google's privacy policy. This page, the other policy pages and the AI assistant connector do not use Google Fonts.
- AI assistants. When you use China Footnotes in ChatGPT, Claude or another assistant, our server receives only what each tool needs: search words, filters such as city, type or tag, a place id or a topic id. We use them only to answer that request and do not store them. We never receive your conversation, name, account details or location; the assistant's provider handles those under its own privacy policy.
- Your checklist. The "Before you go" checklist remembers the items you ticked in your own browser (local storage). It is never sent to us.
- Email. If you email us, your address and message pass through Cloudflare Email Routing to our mailbox at Microsoft Outlook. We use them only to reply, and delete them within 12 months of our last reply.
Your choices
- Clear your browser's site data to remove the checklist.
- Ask what we hold about you or ask us to delete your emails: write to will@chinafootnotes.com. We reply within 30 days.
What we never ask for
We will never ask for your passport number, bank card details, passwords or other credentials. Please do not send them to us.
Sharing
We do not sell personal data or use it for advertising. Apart from the service providers named above, we share it with no one unless the law requires it.
Children
The guide is for a general audience and is not directed at children under 13.
Changes
