Why go
Tiananmen Square (天安门广场) is the broad civic space on Beijing’s central axis, facing Tiananmen Gate and bordered by major state buildings. You can come for the flag ceremony or to understand the scale of the axis before visiting other venues. A square reservation does not admit you to the Palace Museum or Chairman Mao Memorial Hall.
What to do
- See the central axis. Stand in the open square and look north toward Tiananmen Gate. The Palace Museum lies farther north, beyond separate checks and its own ticket.
- Attend the flag ceremony. Reserve the flag-raising time slot rather than the general morning slot if the ceremony is your purpose. The square opens before the ceremony; the exact time changes by date.
- Pair with a booked venue. If you already hold a valid reservation for the Palace Museum or Chairman Mao Memorial Hall, the square policy allows that record to serve for square access. The venue still has its own entry rule.
- Don't miss: The four booking periods are flag-raising, morning, afternoon and flag-lowering.
- Best time: Allow extra time for security
- Skip if: Skip if you only need to cross nearby streets; the square itself requires a booking.
Practical details
- Hours: Access times follow the daily flag schedule
- Under the operator’s rules the square opens one hour before the flag-raising and closes at an evening closing time that the rules do not state.
- Admission: Free
- Booking: Reserve 1–7 days ahead
- Tiananmen Square reservation platform (天安门广场预约参观服务平台) — https://yuyue2026.tamgw.beijing.gov.cn/web/ · passport: yes
- Tiananmen Square reservation (天安门广场预约参观) — WeChat → search 天安门广场预约参观 → individual booking · passport: yes
- Passport accepted: yes — The operator policy explicitly lists foreign passports for reservation.
- The 2021 rules say future ten days; the newer September 2026 notice says 1–7 days.
- Reddit: the entrance checks for a reservation record (Shon_t, Jun 2026); one visitor reported being refused without one in 2025 (DKUN_of_WFST). A same-day ticket for the Palace Museum or the National Museum is the official alternative; the Palace Museum itself sells no same-day tickets, so this is not a walk-up route.
- Last admission: No fixed last-entry time
- Time to allow: 30–60 min plus security
- Getting there: Metro Line 1 · Tiananmen East or West
- Metro Line 1 to Tiananmen East (天安门东), about 5 min walk
- Metro Line 1 to Tiananmen West (天安门西), about 5 min walk
- Show a taxi driver: 天安门广场预约安检口
- Tiananmen East and West stations (Line 1) and Qianmen (Lines 2, 8) were closed or restricted on 30 Sep–5 Oct 2026; see updates.
- Foreign visitors: Foreign passports accepted for reservation

Traveler tips
- Book the correct time slot. Choose flag-raising, morning, afternoon or flag-lowering in the official Tiananmen Square reservation platform. The flag ceremony uses its own slot; its clock time changes by date. Keep the reservation record ready for the security checkpoint. source
- Enter your passport details. Foreign visitors may reserve with an entry passport or foreign residence permit under the square authority’s policy. Enter the passport details in the individual-booking form and bring the original document, not a photo, to the checkpoint; Caveat: Jordan & Emily, Panos Papadongonas, Laura and Wendy all say the physical passport is checked at the gate. None describes a case of a passport being refused, and the form’s nationality and phone fields are covered in separate tips. (3 travelers) source
- Use the newer booking window. The square authority’s September 2026 notice says individual visitors book one to seven days ahead. Open the official platform or WeChat mini-program for your date and time slot. Older pages may still describe a ten-day window. source
- Budget for the security line. Go to the security checkpoint for the time and entry point on your reservation. Carry fewer bags to speed the check; the September 2026 operator notice specifically asks holiday visitors to travel light. source
- Separate each venue reservation. A square reservation does not grant Palace Museum or Chairman Mao Memorial Hall entry. Reserve those venues independently if they are on your itinerary. A valid same-day ticket for the Mausoleum, National Museum of China, Forbidden City, Sun Yat-sen Park or the Workers’ Cultural Hall can serve as the square access record, for the morning, afternoon or flag-lowering periods. Caveat: The Beijing Tourism Network list dates from October 2024; confirm on the square platform that your venue is still on it. source
- Use one booking for your party. The square’s individual booking rule permits up to seven people in one order, with at most four adults. Add each required visitor’s identity details before submitting. Children under the rule’s age or height threshold can be counted separately. source
- Save the booking record. At the checkpoint, display the reservation result or ask staff to look up the identity record if the phone cannot scan. The official rules describe manual verification for computer bookings and phone problems. source
- Plan around public events. The square can restrict entry during major state or foreign-affairs events. Follow the authority’s dated notice for the day, especially around flag ceremonies and national holidays. source
- Security Check 04 on the east side. Jordan & Emily chose South Security Check 04 on the east side of the square and cleared it in about 10 minutes on both visits. Laura booked the same checkpoint, named in the reservation form as Square East Road South Checkpoint 04. Panos Papadongonas arrived by Metro Line 1 at Tiananmen East, which puts the security area close to the exit. Caveat: Jordan & Emily warn that the gate by the Forbidden City exit had long lines. A Beijing travel agency (commercial) suggests the east checkpoint for Dongdan and Wangfujing hotels and the south checkpoint for Qianmen and Zhushikou. Checkpoint options can change with the date and slot, so use the one shown in your own reservation. (2 travelers) source
- Expect a queue, and budget the morning slot. Wendy booked an 8:00–12:00 slot, arrived about 10:00 and only got in at 11:58 after the security queues, in summer heat. Panos Papadongonas recommends arriving before 9:00 for lighter crowds and shorter queues. Jordan & Emily say that even with a reservation entry takes time on busy slots and at the busy gates. Caveat: Wendy’s wait is a single summer-season report and Jordan & Emily’s 10-minute clearances were in autumn, so waits swing widely with date and gate. (2 travelers) source
- Check the layers: bags, camera, water. Expect two or three separate screening stations before the final check, where staff look again at the reservation and passports and bags go through a small scanner. Jordan & Emily describe airport-style screening with bag scans, metal detectors and a water-bottle sip test; their tripod passed. Laura was questioned about her DJI Osmo Pocket and had to show what pictures she had taken with her Canon EOS 80D. Caveat: Treatment of equipment varies: Laura's guide says 'Tripods are not allowed and will be confiscated during the security checks', while Jordan & Emily say tripods are surprisingly allowed and theirs passed. - Arriving at 2:00 a.m. for the flag ceremony. Aaleyah Jackson’s group reached the square gates around 2:00 a.m. and found long lines of locals already waiting. Once inside, everyone sprinted across the square to claim a spot near the flagpole, then watched the march from Tiananmen Gate and the flag raised to the anthem. The flag-raising reservation slot opens one hour before sunrise under the operator’s rules; the ceremony time follows sunrise. Caveat: Aaleyah Jackson’s 2:00 a.m. arrival was during a summer student program and her post does not say how she booked. A Beijing travel agency (commercial) advises leaving hotels at 3:30–4:00 a.m. around National Day. Allow more lead time on holidays. source
- Use the WeChat mini-program in Chinese. In WeChat, search 天安门广场预约参观, choose 个人预约 (individual booking), enter the name and passport number exactly as printed on the passport, pick the date and slot, then press 提交预约 (submit). Wendy says slots released by cancellations can reappear, so recheck the app on the days before you go. Caveat: Panos Papadongonas and Wendy describe the same steps; Wendy’s note about reappearing slots is her own observation. source
- A tour operator’s nationality-box workaround. A Beijing tour operator’s guide says the mini-program’s nationality box does not accept English country names. The guide’s workaround is to switch the interface to Chinese, type or search the first character of the country name, for example 法 for 法国 (France), and select it from the list. Caveat: This comes from a commercial tour operator’s own article. A reader, Pierre, commented in October 2025 that he could not work out what to enter in the nationality box. source
- One reader could not get the website’s code on a foreign number. Iván could not receive the security code on a non-Chinese phone number through WeChat or Alipay, which blocked him from the official reservation website. Wendy booked through the WeChat mini-program and entered a passport number there rather than a Chinese ID. Caveat: Iván's comment is from April 2025 and concerns the WeChat/Alipay mini-program's security-code step; he says that also left him unable to use the official website. The operator's notice has since moved to a new platform address, so the current phone-number rule is unconfirmed. (2 travelers) source
- Cancel instead of skipping a booked slot. Each reservation can be cancelled up to three times a day; after that you cannot book again that day. A booking that is neither verified at the gate nor cancelled counts as a no-show. Three no-shows within a month block new square bookings for six months. Caveat: These limits come from the 2021 trial rules; the September 2026 notice does not repeat them. source
- One post reports a daily 12:00 slot refresh. A December 2025 post about the first flag ceremony of 2026 says remaining tickets are refreshed in batches every day at 12:00 for the 1–7 day window. Caveat: Single self-media account and a holiday post; the operator's notice does not state a release time. A Beijing travel agency (商业) post says 12:00 as well, which is treated as the same claim. source
- The open square is fenced and farther than it looks. Panos Papadongonas found that the square looks fully open but fences, security zones and designated crossings steer your path, and distances felt longer in person. Jordan & Emily twice got lost in the one-way footpaths around the east-side security check and recommend allowing 45 minutes to an hour for a quick visit with photos. Caveat: Both authors visited with a reservation and went on foot; routes may change with event closures. Panos's page carries affiliate links. source
- The square checks your reservation at the entrance. The square's entrance checkpoints look for a reservation record, and a visitor without one was refused. A valid same-day ticket for the Palace Museum, the National Museum of China or the other listed venues is accepted as the access record instead. _Caveat: DKUN_of_WFST, a commenter, says the refusal was in 2025 ("last year"). Training_Low_9968 adds that Forbidden City tickets can be bought on the day, which does not match the Palace Museum's own rule of advance booking only; that half is not used here. Shon_t booked a tour and says the checkpoints checked reservations before entry. The venue list comes from the square authority's policy. Comment dates on Reddit are the thread's post date._ (3 travelers) source
- Overseas phone numbers fail on the flag-ceremony booking. The WeChat mini-program rejects a non-Chinese number as an invalid phone, and Trip.com redirects to the same mini-program. GriffynGriwitz says a friend with a Chinese number can book for you with your name and passport number. The square authority's own rules let relatives or friends book on behalf of elderly visitors, school pupils, disabled people and others who cannot use smart devices; the rule does not offer this to every visitor. Caveat: The authority's rules also say no other organisation or individual may run booking services for the square, so paid proxy services are not an approved route. Booking itself is free and quotas for the flag-raising are small. Comment dates on Reddit are the thread's post date. (2 travelers) source
- Security line in summer heat can reach three hours. In peak summer a tour group spent three hours in the line, and a visitor who arrived at 07:00 still queued a long time; shade is almost absent. A guide-led single-person entry on the far side with no bags was reported to cut the wait to 30–40 minutes. Bring a hat, sunglasses and water, and leave bags behind. Caveat: Comment dates on Reddit are the thread's post date. (3 travelers) source
- Two hours at security for a winter flag-raising. A visitor reached the square at 05:00 for a winter sunrise flag-raising and waited about two hours at security. Caveat: One visitor's February experience; waits vary by date. Comment dates on Reddit are the thread's post date. source
- Reach the square through the National Museum or Qianmen. Leaving the National Museum, you can walk straight into the square with no separate reservation or queue, and a Qianmen subway exit on the south side was said to move faster than the east-side exit. Caveat: Comment dates on Reddit are the thread's post date. (4 travelers) source
- Flag-raising: join the queue after midnight and dress for the cold. For a good spot at the flag-raising, authors joined the line between 01:00 and 03:30. 泡泡糖只想去北海流泪 reached checkpoint 2 at 03:30 in late December with 100+ people ahead, stood until checks began about 05:30 and saw the flag go up about 07:30; stayrichy_nyeah (Jul 2026) says to be in line by 01:00 for the front, with the ceremony at 04:00–04:45, and rates the left side of checkpoint 3 as the best view. Take a folding stool, warm layers and hand warmers, leave your bag behind, and use the toilets on the way to the queue. Tell a taxi driver you are going to the flag-raising so they drop you at the nearest point. _Caveat: Single-night experiences in winter and summer. Authors disagree on power banks: stayrichy_nyeah says power banks and water can be taken in, while a May 2026 video by C位娱子酱 warns that they cannot (no text; comments are anonymous), so check your booking notice. 泡泡糖 says to wait in the underground passage until about 06:30 and then walk to the side if you entered by checkpoint 2._ (2 travelers) source
- Matching your booking to a checkpoint. ophelia (Sep 2025) lists the square's checkpoints with the nearest approach: 01 beside Tiananmen Gate (Line 1 Tiananmen West, Exit A or B), 02 (Tiananmen East, Exit B), 03 near the National Museum (Tiananmen East, Exit C), 04 near the Mao Memorial Hall (Qianmen, Exit B) and 07 (Qianmen, Exit C). She says to book at least a day ahead, as early as seven days, and a reservation for the memorial hall, the National Museum, the Great Hall or the gate tower also lets you into the square. RP (Jun 2025) was turned away from checkpoint 02 with a Great Hall booking and had to walk round to 03, and says a memorial-hall visit needs an early arrival because it closes at noon. Caveat: Checkpoint names and rules come from single 2025 posts; the square authority's notice says to enter by the date, slot and checkpoint on your booking. Some commenters say any checkpoint works with any valid booking while others were refused (anonymous comments), and an August 2026 author says checkpoint 16 near Changpuhe Park accepts any booking. ophelia also says the National Museum cannot lead into the square under special circumstances. (2 travelers) source
- Tiananmen Gate tower: square first, no bags. ophelia (Sep 2025) says to visit the square before the gate tower, because the tower route is one way, from the tower through Duanmen to Meridian Gate. Bags and power banks are not allowed up the tower, so leave them at the deposit counter before security, and aim to enter by 16:00, no later than 16:20, rather than at 16:30. Caveat: Single author, Sep 2025; the tower is booked on a separate official account that this entry does not cover. source
- Tiananmen fast pass (快通) in the Jingtong app. 小红薯68F09681 (Aug 2026) booked a 'Tiananmen fast pass' (天安门快通) in the 京通 (Jingtong) app three days ahead for checkpoint 07: the first check has no fast lane (about 20 minutes in the ordinary line), but after it the group of three used the fast lane alone and was photographing on the square at 10:32 after reaching the first check at 09:54. Js_Yoyo (Sep 2026) describes the metro route to the checkpoint 07 fast-pass entrance. _Caveat: The posts do not say whether the square booking is still needed separately. Whether a foreign visitor can use the Jingtong app or the fast pass is not stated; an anonymous commenter on Js_Yoyo's post says a barrier kept them out of the fast lane._ (2 travelers) source
- A quieter checkpoint 16 near Changpuhe Park. 团团滚滚 (Aug 2026) used checkpoint 16 near Changpuhe Park (菖蒲河公园): leaving Tiananmen East station at 11:15 and standing on the square at 11:47, with very few people there, while the Exit B crowd and checkpoint 2 were packed. Caveat: One author's report, and RP (Jun 2025) was refused at a checkpoint that did not match the booking, so confirm with staff before relying on this. The author's own comment says it works with any booking, including a Forbidden City, Great Hall or National Museum booking. source
- Seeing the gate without a booking: Exit D. 媛美Ayma (Apr 2026) says Line 1 Tiananmen East Exit D (south-west exit) lets you turn right toward the National Museum and photograph Tiananmen with a long lens without booking or security; the left side is the booking entrance. 🍭 (Nov 2025) found the area near Exit C too far away and barricaded for visitors without a booking, and got closer by booking a Great Hall visit instead. Caveat: Single-author reports; an anonymous commenter in July 2026 says you can no longer turn right out of the station. Whether a foreign passport can book the Great Hall is not stated.
