Why go
The Three Gorges Museum (重庆中国三峡博物馆), also called the Chongqing Museum, is a free history museum on People's Square, facing the Great Hall of the People. Its four floors cover the Three Gorges region and the Ba-Yu cultures, Chongqing's story as a river port and wartime capital, and a changing programme of special exhibitions. It is an indoor, city-centre stop of two to three hours, and it is not about the Three Gorges Dam. The building is the museum; the interior of the Great Hall is a separate visit.
What to do
- Learn how the gorges formed in Majestic Three Gorges. The first permanent display starts with the geology that carved the Qutang, Wu and Xiling gorges and goes on to the river and its towns. It gives the landscape context that a river cruise does not.
- See the Ba-Yu bronzes and boat coffin. Look for the Three-Sheep bronze zun, a Ba-people boat coffin and the Wushan Man jaw fossil among the early-history cases.
- Follow Chongqing's rise as a city. The city gallery runs from the ancient Ba capital through the 1891 treaty-port opening to the 1929 founding of the municipality, with a late-Qing city model and the 1937 city map.
- Spend time in the War of Resistance hall. The hall pairs the wartime-capital exhibition with a half-panorama of the bombing and a restored tunnel-disaster scene.
- Check the special exhibitions. Special exhibitions rotate on the first, third and fourth floors; most are free and some carry a separate ticket.
- Don't miss: The entrance is the stepped, curved stone-and-glass front on Renmin Road, directly across People's Square from the Great Hall of the People.
- Best time: At 09:00 opening on a weekday
- Skip if: You only have one day and came for the skyline and hot pot; this is the stop to drop.

Traveler tips
- No reservation: bring ID. The museum dropped its advance reservation in autumn 2025, so you can walk up on the day with a valid ID. Queue at the stepped entrance, pass the airport-style security check with your ID, and walk in; there is nothing to buy. Most older guides still describe the old seven-day booking, so ignore them. The museum says it has not authorised agents or travel agencies to sell entry to the free galleries. Caveat: The notice is dated 30 September 2025 and took effect on 1 October 2025. Entry is controlled by live crowd numbers, so a temporary limit can still hold people at the door at busy times. The no-agents statement is from the museum's July 2025 summer notice, when reservation still applied. Four visitors from Oct 2025 to Oct 2026 (旅行拾光者, 小明同学, 米开朗基脑, 大煤碳) also write that no booking is needed and an ID card is enough; 大煤碳 (5 Oct 2026) walked in at 09:00 on a National Day morning in rain. - Bring your passport; use the staffed lane. The museum admits visitors on a valid identity document, and its own earlier ID list named passports. Carry the original passport, not a copy. If the automatic gate will not read it, use the staffed security lane, where an officer checks it by hand. If you have no ID with you at all, the museum's WeChat official account can register you for an entry QR code. Caveat: The manual-lane advice comes from travel sites (China for Travelers and Chongqing Travel Editorial); the museum itself says only 'valid ID'. Meet Chongqing (June 2026) adds that passports, mainland ID cards and Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan permits are accepted. source
- Closed Mondays; arrive before 16:00. The galleries open 09:00–17:00 from Tuesday to Sunday. The museum's own notice stops admission after 16:00, starts clearing the halls at 16:45 and closes the doors at 17:00, so a late-afternoon arrival leaves very little time. It is closed on Mondays unless the Monday is a public holiday. Caveat: Amap, some guides and a listing site (iCity) give a 16:30 or last-30-minutes cut-off; the museum's own pages say 16:00. Several posts from 2023 to Oct 2025 still say entry stops at 16:30; 米开朗基脑 (3 Sep 2026) writes 16:00 with 17:00 closing, which matches the museum's current notice. source
- Leave food and big bags at the door. Security uses an X-ray machine and a metal detector, and you should take metal items out of your pockets first. Food, lighters, knives, pets and sharp or fragile items are not allowed in the halls; drinks are checked at security and may be let in or refused. Large bags can go into the free storage at the left of the entrance corridor, and there are lockers by the security check. Caveat: The museum's visitor notice lists drinks among items not to bring in, yet its list of restricted articles says packaged drinks may enter after an X-ray check or a sip test, so the rule at the door can vary. Journey Rambler (2025) says the lockers there could be rented; the museum's notice describes storage as free. An empty bottle is allowed according to China for Travelers. source
- Photos without flash only. Still photography is fine, but flash, tripods and selfie sticks are banned, and filming in the exhibition halls is not allowed unless the museum has approved it beforehand. Do not touch the objects, and eat and drink only in the rest areas outside the halls. source
- Pick two or three halls and start on the fourth floor. The building has four floors, four permanent displays (Majestic Three Gorges, Ancient Ba-Yu, Chongqing: Road of a City and the War of Resistance years) and several specialist halls. Trying to see everything leads to reading fatigue, so pick two or three. Objects visitors single out include the Three-Sheep bronze zun, a Ba-people boat coffin and the Wushan Man jaw fossil. Take the lift to the top floor and work downwards: it saves your legs and lets you avoid the crowded ground-floor hall until the end. Plan about two to four hours. Caveat: Routes differ: Meet Chongqing (June 2026) starts on the first floor and then goes to the third; China for Travelers advises starting at the top and working down to stay out of step with coach groups. 亿两莹子 (27 Sep 2025), 黑皮茉莉公主 (29 Sep 2025) and 旅行拾光者 (18 Oct 2025) all recommend top-down; 旅行拾光者 suggests two to three hours and 亿两莹子 three to four; the first two posts promote a dairy-brand collaboration. - The wartime hall has a bombing panorama. The War of Resistance hall combines the permanent exhibition with a painted half-panorama of the Chongqing bombing and a restored scene of the Great Tunnel disaster. It tells how Chongqing became China's wartime capital in 1937 and how the city was bombed from 1938 to 1944. Give it more time than the other halls; it is where many visitors linger longest. Caveat: Meet Chongqing (June 2026) calls the hall heavy but worth the time; China for Travelers says foreign visitors tend to stay longest here. 摩羯食杂记 (13 Mar 2026) calls the short recreated Great Tunnel disaster scene the most affecting part; 重庆旅游百宝箱 (22 May 2025) recommends the half-panorama screening of the Chongqing bombing. - Audio guide: free on WeChat. The museum says it offers free voice and audio-visual guides for its permanent displays and main special exhibitions, which you open by scanning a QR code on the free in-hall Wi-Fi and following its WeChat account. Voice-guide rental is also listed among its visitor services. Visitors report an English handset at the ground-floor desk. Caveat: The museum calls its guides multilingual without listing the languages; the English handset is reported only by China for Travelers. Guided tours by staff cost ¥300 an hour for two halls (旅行拾光者, Oct 2025) and 大煤碳 (5 Oct 2026) split ¥300 for an hour among a group of ten, leaving one ID as a deposit. 旅行拾光者 lists an audio-guide handset at ¥20 with a ¥200 deposit; a 2024 post (大王快来追我呀嘻嘻嘻) quoted ¥48 with no deposit. 格子去哪儿 (Apr 2025) notes free timed talks, handsets and AI guide glasses. - Metro to Zengjiayan, exit 3. Zengjiayan (曾家岩) is served by Metro Lines 2 and 10, and exit 3 is the one for the museum and the Great Hall of the People. An air-raid-shelter passage links exit 3 to the street near People's Square, so you walk the last stretch under cover. From Chongqing North railway station Line 10 reaches Zengjiayan without a change. Caveat: China for Travelers measures the walk from exit 3 to the museum entrance at about 120 m; Meet Chongqing (June 2026) walked about 400 m from the station. Chinese Wikipedia says the passage from exit 3 takes a few minutes' walk. Exit 3 is also given by 摩羯食杂记 (Mar 2026, about five minutes) and 旅行拾光者 (Oct 2025, over 600 m); 亿两莹子 and 黑皮茉莉公主 (Sep 2025, turn right) also say Exit 3 but their posts promote a dairy-brand collaboration. 王先生叫Sky (Aug 2025) wrote 'Exit A', which may be the older exit name. (3 travelers) source
- Holiday queues and entry limits. On public holidays the entrance steps fill before opening, and once the count inside reaches a set limit the museum admits one person for each person who leaves and posts temporary entry-limit notices on its WeChat account. Staff say the busiest hours on late-holiday days are 11:00–16:00, so come at opening or in the last hours of the day. Caveat: On the first day without reservation in 2025 the building reached about 3,500 people by late morning and the queue reached the steps by 08:30; the 2026 holiday report gives the 11:00–16:00 peak window. 涛声依旧的新时代 (22 Feb 2026, sixth day of Spring Festival) joined a queue of 200 m in four or five lines and waited 40 minutes; 没钱打点太监 (27 Jul 2026) found the line already long at 08:00, before opening, and says the security check at Zengjiayan station is slow. 大煤碳 (5 Oct 2026) queued only briefly at 09:00 in light rain with free umbrella bags provided under the awning. - Crossing Mountains and Seas: separate ticket. The large China–Italy exhibition Crossing Mountains and Seas (跨越山海) on the first floor needs its own ticket, listed at ¥49 full price and from ¥35 through the museum's official ticketing; the permanent galleries and the other special exhibitions on the upper floors stay free. It gathers about 240 objects from over twenty museums around dragons, griffins, sphinxes and other fantastic creatures. Caveat: The Italian Cultural Institute gives an end date of 18 October 2026; the iCity listing says 1 November. The ¥49 price is from the listing site Wantulu and the ¥35 starting price from Bendibao, which names the museum's official ticketing; the museum's own article gives no price. source
- Free exhibition: Longgupo cave and Wushan Man. A free special exhibition in fourth-floor hall D traces the search for early humans through the discovery of the Wushan Man jaw at the Longgupo site in Wushan, Chongqing, which is dated at more than two million years. It shows early Pleistocene giant ape, small giant-panda and hyena fossils, stone tools and a reconstruction of the Lucy skeleton. source
- Free exhibition: Song and Jin bronze mirrors. A free exhibition of 87 sets of Song and Jin bronze mirrors, drawn from this museum and the Heilongjiang Provincial Museum, runs in third-floor hall B. It looks at how mirror decoration moved from gods and aristocrats to daily life: playing children, paired fish, birds at a window and hermits in a forest. source
- Monday: the Great Hall is still open. The museum closes on Mondays unless the day is a public holiday. The Great Hall of the People across People's Square is open every day for a separate ticket, and the square between them is free at any hour. If your only free day falls on a Monday, take the Great Hall and the square and keep the museum for another day. Caveat: The Great Hall's opening days come from China for Travelers only; the Great Hall interior is a separate visit. source
- A history museum, not a dam museum. The name confuses many visitors: this is a city-centre history museum on People's Square, not a dam museum and not at the dam in Yichang, Hubei, which is far downstream. Expect Ba-Yu bronzes, Han sculpture, the gorge landscape, Chongqing's river-port and wartime history, and rotating exhibitions rather than engineering. Caveat: Journey Rambler (2025) writes that the author first took it for an ordinary museum before finding a rich collection; China for Travelers states there is no dam museum in Chongqing. source
- Step-free route from Exit 3. If stairs are a problem or you have luggage, leave the station by Exit 3, step out and look right to the underground car park, then follow the accessible-lift signs inside to a lift that rises to the front platform opposite the Great Hall. Luggage can be stored after security. Caveat: 紫茄子大王 (25 Jun 2024) gives this route; replies (anonymous, Jul 2024 to May 2025) confirm it works, say people queue for the lift, and one adds that an exit on the left needs a few steps. One reply also posted lift opening hours, which have not been confirmed. source
- Free volunteer talks at each hall. Besides the paid staff guides, volunteers give free talks in the halls at set times. Scan the code at each hall's entrance to see when and where, then follow a volunteer; many cover their own specialist area. Ask at the desk on the right inside the entrance about staff-led tours. Caveat: 大煤碳 (5 Oct 2026) followed several volunteers over a day; 格子去哪儿 (6 Apr 2025) lists timed free talks. Talk times change; the schedule is only on the codes at the halls. (2 travelers) source
- Wuyang Han gate towers are easy to miss. Look at the two sides of the entrance for the Wuyang Han que (乌杨汉阙), a 5.4 m carved stone gate tower from the Han and Wei period and among the best preserved of its kind. It is not marked as a highlight, and visitors walk past it. Caveat: 大煤碳 (5 Oct 2026) says not to miss it at the entrance; 王先生叫Sky (3 Aug 2025) lists it first among the treasures, and an anonymous reply (Aug 2025) walked past it unmarked. (2 travelers) source
- Free stamps on each floor's shops. Each floor has free ink stamps near the cultural-product shops for people who collect stamps in museum stamp books. Bring your own book; the stamp quality is described as ordinary. Caveat: 旅行拾光者 (Oct 2025) says each floor has a free stamp; 格子去哪儿 (Apr 2025) says the shops stamp for free but the print is ordinary. An anonymous reply (Apr 2026) on a stamp-collecting post says staff on two floors disagreed on where the stamp was and only the blue museum stamp was available. (2 travelers) source
