Notices in effect
- 2026-09-15 to 2026-11-08: Ferry timetable on a non-official listing dated 16 Sep 2026: from 15 Sep boats leave both the Hongyadong and Ciqikou piers between 10:00 and 17:00, and the last departure is earlier than before. Check the operator's WeChat account for the day's sailings.
Why go
Ciqikou (磁器口) is a former Jialing River porcelain port that grew into one of Chongqing's best-known old streets: flagstone lanes, timber shopfronts, red lanterns, teahouses and a hill temple. The main street is crowded and commercial, and the pleasure is in the side lanes, the river end and the lantern-lit back street. It is free to walk, sits on Metro Line 1 and fits a half day.
What to do
- Walk the flagstone main street. Enter through the stone 磁器口 archway and follow the main street downhill toward the river. Look up at the timber facades and red lanterns, then step into the 12 side lanes that branch off it.
- Climb to Baolun Temple. Baolun Temple (宝轮寺) is a working Buddhist temple on the hill in the middle of the town, reached by a long stone stair. The climb ends on a terrace over the rooflines.
- Taste mahua and local snacks. Chen-style mahua twists (陈麻花), spicy duck-blood stew (毛血旺) and other street snacks are the main reason to come. Graze in small portions along the side streets instead of committing to one main-street meal.
- Sit down in a teahouse. Order a lidded cup of tea and watch the street from a bench or a stage-side seat; some teahouses run face-changing opera at set times.
- Finish at the river or the back street. Walk down to the Jialing River end of the town, or leave by the newer back street, where the lantern alleys light up after dark. The riverside ferry pier sits at the lower end.
- Add the Phoenix Cloud skywalk. A free elevated walkway on Phoenix Hill gives a roof-level view of the old town and the river, with a light show on the top platform in the evening.
- Don't miss: The archway couplet 白日里千人拱手,入夜来万盏明灯 (a thousand folded hands by day, ten thousand lamps by night) sums up the town and explains why the evening matters.
- Best time: Weekday morning · 09:00–11:00
- Skip if: You want quiet heritage with no commercial street; much of the main lane is shops and snack stalls.
Practical details
- Hours: Open all day · shops ~09:00–22:00
- The government page lists the back street (后街) as open 24 hours. Whole-town all-day access and shop hours come from English guides (shops roughly 09:00–22:00).
- Baolun Temple keeps its own hours, about 07:30-18:00 in most visitor posts (one post says 08:00-17:30); paid interiors and the Chongqing 1949 theatre run on their own timetables.
- Admission: Free to walk
- Jialing ferry (嘉陵小渡) Hongyadong–Ciqikou, one way: price not found yet — Current fare not confirmed by the operator. Last operator notices found: ¥40 (2024 tariff), then a promotional ¥30 from February 2025 with no end date (list price ¥50). Non-official listings in September 2026 also give ¥30 one way.
- Baolun Temple (宝轮寺): ¥0 — Three independent visitors (Oct 2025 to Jan 2026) report free entry, and China for Travelers agrees. TripChina and Chongqing Travel Editorial quote ¥5 and Kiki Journey ¥10. Bead bracelets and other shop items are separate purchases; no operator notice found.
- Zhong Family Courtyard (钟家院): ¥15 — Single source: China for Travelers (guide with affiliate links) gives ¥15, open 9:00–17:30; no operator notice found.
- Ciqikou is an open street with no gate or ticket office; guides (China for Travelers, Chongqing Travel Editorial) list it as free.
- The street itself has no ticket; temples, shows and the ferry are separate, and the skywalk is free.
- Chongqing 1949 is a separately ticketed stage show beside the old town.
- Booking: No booking for the street
- Ciqikou is a national 4A scenic area. Since 25 Jul 2024 only six municipal attractions require advance booking, and Ciqikou is not one of them; walk-in entry is the rule.
- No 2026 booking notice for Ciqikou was found in the holiday crowd-control reports.
- Last admission: No gate closing time
- Time to allow: 2–4 hr
- Getting there: Line 1 · Ciqikou station · Exit 1
- Metro Line 1 to Ciqikou (磁器口), Exit 1, about 6 min walk
- Show a taxi driver: 沙坪坝区磁南街1号 磁器口古镇
- Chinese Wikipedia (revised Sep 2026) lists Exit 1 for the old town. Fross (May 2026, a Trip.com post by a local creator, translated by AI) gives Exit 1 and about 5 minutes on foot; Kiki Journey (Sep 2026, affiliate links) writes Exit 1 or 2, then a 5-minute walk. A Chongqing Daily walk-through (Feb 2024) names Exit 2 for the pedestrian street, which conflicts with the current exit list. The Exit 1 staircase was rebuilt for Line 27 works.
- Foreign visitors: Free street; foreign-visitor rules not found

Traveler tips
- Line 1 to Ciqikou, Exit 1 and its new staircase. Ride Chongqing Rail Transit Line 1 to Ciqikou station (磁器口站) and leave by Exit 1, the exit with the accessible lift. It comes out on Yangshuang Road, and the old town is about a five-minute walk from there. From Jiaochangkou near Jiefangbei the fare is ¥4–6 depending on where you board. The old staircase at Exit 1 is closed for the construction of Line 27, and passengers use a new staircase at the same exit; follow the station signs rather than the stairs you remember from older maps. Caveat: Chinese Wikipedia lists Exit 1 as the exit for Ciqikou Ancient Town and Exit 2 for a middle school. Fross (May 2026, a Trip.com post by a local creator, translated by AI) also names Exit 1; Kiki Journey (Sep 2026, affiliate links) writes Exit 1 or 2. A Chongqing Daily walk-through (Feb 2024) says Exit 2 leads about 100 m to the pedestrian street, which may reflect older numbering. China for Travelers puts the main archway about 10 minutes east of Exit 1. Five more 2025-2026 authors (呆会儿, 小瓶盖, 张呆呆, 吃颗茜蓝发, 薯片快跑) give Exit 1 for the old town and Baolun Temple, with a walk of about ten minutes to the main gate; 吃颗茜蓝发 adds to take the stairs down on the left and keep to the road. The Exit 1 staircase notice took effect on 8 May 2025; Chongqing Travel Editorial (checked 2 Sep 2026) says the arrangement still applied then, and construction routing can change, so follow on-site signs. - River steps or main archway. The old town has several entrances. The red timber Yinglong Gate (迎龙门) crowns the wide stairs up from the river, and the stone 磁器口 archway with the couplet 白日里千人拱手,入夜来万盏明灯 opens the main street. Entering by the archway and leaving by the back street gives a loop instead of a retrace. Caveat: Phil Barrington (May 2026) walked up from the river and entered under a big archway at the top of steps. TripChina (updated Sep 2026) places the ferry dock beside Yinglongmen Riverside Plaza (迎龙门滨江广场). source
- Arrive on a weekday morning. On weekdays the main street is calmest from about 09:00 to 11:00, while shops are opening. Weekend midday is the slowest stretch, and the lanes fill up from late morning. Late afternoon brings the lantern light but more people. Caveat: China for Travelers calls weekday 9–11am the calm window and weekend midday the worst. Kiki Journey (Friday visit, Sep 2026, affiliate links) found empty lanes until about 11:30 and says the town sometimes runs a one-way flow at peak hours. Chongqing Travel Editorial (updated Sep 2026) advises mornings or weekdays for comfort. source
- Step into Hengjie and the side lanes. Hengjie (磁器口横街) branches off the main street with the same mahua shops and little queueing, and stone steps lead up to quieter residential lanes. A short detour of two alleys drops the noise level sharply. Caveat: Phil Barrington (May 2026) found a slight detour quieter, and Elle L. (Mar 2025, affiliate links) says small alleys open onto views of the Jialing River. The Hengjie detail is from China for Travelers. source
- Ask prices before snacks are weighed. Chen-style mahua (陈麻花) fried dough twists are the signature bite, sold in plain, spicy and seaweed flavours. Skip the queue at the first shop on the main street and buy from a quiet branch or on Hengjie. Ask the unit price before anything sold loose goes on the scale, and treat a free taste as the start of a sales pitch. Caveat: China for Travelers advises skipping the first-shop queue and the dyed 金西梅 preserved fruit and fruit cups priced by weight; Kiki Journey (Sep 2026, affiliate links) instead treats the longest queue as a quality signal and reports 20–30 minute weekend queues. Elle L. (Mar 2025, affiliate links) liked seaweed mahua and beef jerky. source
- Choose a teahouse with posted prices. A lidded cup of tea in an old-street teahouse is the slow half of a Ciqikou visit, and some stages run face-changing opera at set times. Choose a teahouse that posts prices, because bills grow in the ones that do not. Caveat: China for Travelers names 禧来转运楼 (正街110号) as a posted-price venue and calls old-town opera a casual taster; Kiki Journey (Sep 2026, affiliate links) watched a face-changing show in a side-alley teahouse; I人遊記 (Jun 2026, partner content on Trip.com) describes teahouses and temples as the calm side of the town. source
- Baolun Temple: free entry, hours, free extras and manners. Baolun Temple (宝轮寺) sits on the hill in the middle of the town, reached by a long stone stair from a small lane off the main street. Entry is free, and the gates are open from about 07:30 to 18:00. Use the left-in, right-out route so you do not backtrack. Inside the gate on the left is a hall where visitors can pick up stamps, a paper fan in summer and a prayer note, and copy sutras without charge; vegetarian meals are served on the 1st and 15th of the lunar month. Beads and charms are sold separately. Hold incense in the left hand, do not blow out the flame, and keep your phone silent inside the halls. Caveat: Visitors from Oct 2025 to Jan 2026 (呆会儿, 小瓶盖, 吃颗茜蓝发) write that entry is free; two 2026 posts promoting the temple shop's bracelets (薯片快跑, 徐徐发抖) say the same. Most posts give 07:30-18:00, others 08:00-17:30 or 07:30-17:30. TripChina and Chongqing Travel Editorial quote ¥5 and Kiki Journey ¥10; check the gate sign. Shop prices come from posts, not a price list: 羊羊羊Raina (23 May 2025) mentions a ¥48 bead, 薯片快跑 (24 Mar 2026) a ¥19 charm and a ¥98 item, and 徐徐发抖 (15 Jun 2026) a ¥59 DIY bracelet; both of the latter are shop promotions. An anonymous reply (Apr 2026) also pays ¥59. (5 travelers) source
- The Hongyadong ferry now docks inside the old town. The Hongyadong–Ciqikou sightseeing ferry (嘉陵小渡) now lands at the Ciqikou ferry pier inside the scenic area, not at the old Tegang terminal. The ride takes roughly an hour along the river, and listings from September 2026 quote about ¥30 one way. Tickets come from the operator, Chongqing Passenger Ship Co.; follow its WeChat account for the day's sailings. Caveat: The dock move was announced on 12 Feb 2026 (视界网). The operator's last published fares are ¥40 (from 1 Jan 2024) and a promotional ¥30 from 5 Feb 2025 (list price ¥50, no end date given); a Sohu listing dated 16 Sep 2026 says ¥30 one way, but no operator confirmation of the current price was found. Sailings stop when the river is high: the operator suspended the route on 18 Sep 2025 because of rising water. Phil Barrington (May 2026) walked past the pier under a big archway and saw signs but no boat or timetable that day, so confirm sailings when you buy. source
- Add the free Phoenix Cloud skywalk. The free Phoenix Cloud (凤凰云槃) skywalk on Phoenix Hill climbs a 69 m height difference over about 300 m, with a sightseeing lift between the lower and upper levels. It ends at a 360-degree platform over the old-town roofs and the Jialing River, and the entrance is across the road from the Ciqikou subdistrict office. Caveat: Opened in 2026. Visitors enter through turnstiles and queue when it is full; the manager says a light show runs on the top platform from 19:00 to 21:00 each evening. China for Travelers puts the skywalk about 380 m south-east of the main archway. source
- Holiday crowding: go by metro. On public holidays Ciqikou is among the busiest scenic areas in the city: over a million visits were counted across one eight-day National Day and Mid-Autumn break. Traffic police list the old town among the popular spots with sustained congestion, so take Line 1 and avoid driving or hailing a car at the gates. Caveat: The 2025 count is 1.02 million visits over the break (The Paper, 10 Oct 2025). The 2026 traffic-police forecast and a 4 Oct 2026 Hualong Net report both place Ciqikou among the most crowded spots; no 2026 Ciqikou booking notice was found. source
- Exit by the back street at night. The back street (磁器口后街), the newer western side of the town, is officially listed as open 24 hours, and its lantern alleys and stilt-house plaza look best after dark. It makes a better exit than retracing the main street, and the metro entrance is a few minutes away. Caveat: The government page describes the back street's opening hours; shops mostly close by 22:00. Chongqing Travel Editorial advises checking the last Line 1 train before settling into a late teahouse. source
- Wear grippy shoes for the stairs. Stone lanes are uneven and steep in places, and they get slippery when wet. Flat shoes with grip matter more than anything else you pack, and the hill temple adds a long climb. Caveat: Both guides are English travel sites; Kiki Journey carries affiliate booking links. source
- Chongqing 1949 is a separate ticket. Chongqing 1949, a large indoor immersive stage show about the eve of 1949, plays in a purpose-built theatre on Jinbi Zhengjie beside the old town. A visit to the street does not include it, and tickets are sold separately. Caveat: The government page describes the show and its theatre location. Elle L. (Mar 2025, affiliate links) says four shows run daily between 14:00 and 20:00; no operator timetable or price was read. Two Reddit commenters (Aug and Sep 2026) say the theatre is close to Ciqikou and pair the two. (2 travelers) source
- Pay by QR code. Shops and stalls are set up for Alipay and WeChat Pay, and older stalls still like small cash. Have a payment app ready and keep a few small notes. The tourist service centre at the main entrance has English brochures and free luggage lockers, which help in the narrow lanes. Caveat: Single source: Kiki Journey (Sep 2026, affiliate links). Foreign-card acceptance at stalls was not found. A luggage-storage app's post (无忧存, Jun 2024, a commercial service) lists a free tourist service centre locker on the back street (09:00-18:00) and paid shops near Exit 1 open 09:00-22:00; details are from 2024. source
- Skip it if you want quiet heritage. Ciqikou is a busy, commercial old street that suits a short, selective visit rather than a full day. Skip the main lane if you want quiet heritage, or go early and spend your time in the side lanes and at the river end. Caveat: Two Reddit commenters in an Aug 2026 first-trip itinerary thread call Ciqikou homogenised and not worth the trip; Chongqing Travel Editorial (updated Sep 2026) says it is not worth treating as a full-day escape. Other visitors enjoy the side lanes and the evening lanterns. (2 travelers) source
- Ginkgo turns yellow in late November. The ginkgo trees in Baolun Temple turn yellow from about the third week of November and were mostly yellow by 2 December. Good angles: the stairs just above the Hundred Steps, the passage beside the Heavenly Kings Hall, the front of the main hall, the God-of-wealth steps looking up, and the passage behind the main hall. Caveat: 呆会儿 (27 Oct 2025) and 小瓶盖 (31 Oct 2025) were looking forward to November; 张呆呆 (2 Dec 2025) saw most trees yellow but admits the first picture's tree is not a ginkgo and was edited. An anonymous reply (3 Dec 2025) calls the photos misleading. Timing depends on the year. (3 travelers) source
- Driving: aim for Shaci Lane car park. On weekends and holidays driving is a poor idea, but if you must, set the navigation to Shaci Lane car park (沙磁巷停车场) and use zone B, which is closer to the temple. The metro or bus 553 to Ciqikou East stop (9 minutes' walk) is easier. Caveat: 呆会儿 (27 Oct 2025) and 张呆呆 (2 Dec 2025) name the car park and zone B; 吃颗茜蓝发 (5 Jan 2026) advises against driving on weekends and holidays and gives bus 553; 羊羊羊Raina (May 2025) spells the lane 沙慈巷 and says the walk is 300 m. Zone and distances are not published. (3 travelers) source
- A quieter route via the old archway. To avoid the main street's crowds, leave Exit 1 and go first to the old Huangjueping archway, the original entrance to the town. From there a flat route passes the Hanlin Courtyard, a former private school, the Baoshan Palace opera teahouse, a local needlework workshop and the Zhong Family Courtyard, then Baolun Temple, the Yinglong Gate pier and the stilt-house square before the back street. Caveat: 豆是要去玩耶 (22 Jun 2026), a post promoting the embroidery workshop's group-buy vouchers and a guesthouse, is the only source; opening hours and workshop prices are not given. China for Travelers lists the Zhong Family Courtyard at ¥15; no operator notice was found. source
