Notices in effect
- 2026-10-08 to 2026-10-08: Bird's Nest tourist visits return to 10:00–22:00 (ticket check stops at 21:00) from 8 October.
Why go
Olympic Green (奥林匹克公园中心区) is the public space between Beijing's 2008 Olympic landmarks. You can see the lattice of the National Stadium, or Bird's Nest, and the blue National Aquatics Center, or Water Cube, from outside without buying either venue's ticket. Entering a stadium, pool or event is a separate plan.
What to do
- Walk the central plaza. Start from Olympic Park station and walk the public central-axis space. The Bird’s Nest and Water Cube face one another across this open area, so exterior views need no venue ticket.
- See the Bird’s Nest exterior. Approach the National Stadium (国家体育场/鸟巢) from the public plaza to see the steel lattice. A tour inside has its own ticket and can change around events.
- Compare the Water Cube. Cross to the National Aquatics Center (国家游泳中心/水立方) for its contrasting outer skin. A building visit, water activity or show is separate from this free outdoor stop.
- Don't miss: Bird’s Nest and Water Cube interior visits are separate venue products.
- Best time: Late afternoon for daylight and evening exteriors
Practical details
- Hours: Plaza 06:30–22:00 summer; 07:00–21:30 winter
- Summer (05-01 to 10-14), Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri, Sat, Sun: 06:30–22:00
- Winter (10-15 to 04-30), Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri, Sat, Sun: 07:00–21:30
- The visitor listing also shows a trial late-closing period; event controls can alter access.
- The government listing overlaps seasonal date ranges in May. The structured split uses 30 April as winter end for planning; confirm dates at the park.
- Admission: Free outdoor plaza; interiors ticketed
- The listed free admission applies to the public Olympic Center, not stadium and aquatics-center tours.
- Visitors give Bird's Nest interior prices of ¥40 (¥20 concession, first stand level only, on site) and ¥100 (¥80 concession, upper levels and roof); no operator price list was read, so prices are not set in structured fields.
- Booking: No booking for outdoor plaza
- Buy separate venue tickets if you plan to enter Bird’s Nest or Water Cube.
- Last admission: No single last-entry time
- Time to allow: 1–2 hr outside
- Getting there: Lines 8 / 15 · Olympic Park station
- Metro Line 8/15 to Olympic Park (奥林匹克公园), Exit B2, about 8 min walk
- Show a taxi driver: 朝阳区奥林匹克公园中心区 鸟巢水立方之间
- Exit B2 at Olympic Park station for the plaza is named by 皮皮的小鼓 (May 2026) and 慕笙笙 (Aug 2026). Concert posts in 2026 name other exits for the stadium ticket gates (D in 拆腻思空腹, E in 再吃一颗苹果), and 棉花糖 (Aug 2026) writes Olympic Sports Center station Exit B for the south side; station names are also mixed up in some posts.
- Foreign visitors: No ID check for outdoor plaza

- booking.passport: The Water Cube's operator page accepts a valid foreign passport as proof for its concessions, but passport ticketing for the Bird's Nest interior and for buying online was not established. (searched: stadium operator notice, municipal visitor page, web search)
Traveler tips
- See both icons without a ticket. The central plaza of Olympic Green (奥林匹克公园中心区) is free to walk. Stroll between the Bird's Nest (鸟巢) and the Water Cube (水立方) for exterior views before deciding whether to pay for either interior. Neither venue ticket is included in the plaza visit. source
- Buy venue tickets separately. The National Stadium and the National Aquatics Center each run their own ticketing, so "Olympic Green" alone buys nothing. Search the venue name in Chinese (国家体育场 or 国家游泳中心) when booking an interior visit, and confirm the venue's own hours before travelling north from central Beijing. source
- Check Bird's Nest hours around concerts. The stadium's tourist visit normally runs 10:00–22:00 with the last ticket check at 21:00, but concert days cut it sharply: visits have been limited to 10:00–15:00 or 10:00–13:00, with full days afterwards. Check the operator's dated notice, which Beijing media republish a few days ahead, before planning an interior visit. Caveat: The pattern comes from operator notices posted in July and September 2026; check the current notice for your date. 南柱赫老婆🥕 (Aug 2025) wrote that on a performance day visits ran 10:00–13:00, and 小黄人在北京 (May 2026) wrote that the day after a concert the staff were still cleaning. A masked commenter (Sept 2026, not counted) said the gate was locked that day. 慕笙笙 (Aug 2026) gave 10:00–18:00 with last check at 17:00, which does not match the operator's usual 10:00–22:00. (2 travelers) source
- National Day week: shortened Bird's Nest hours. Because of concerts on 6 and 7 October 2026, tourist visits to the Bird's Nest run 10:00–22:00 (last check 21:00) on 1–4 October, 10:00–15:00 (last check 14:00) on 5 October, and 10:00–13:00 (last check 12:00) on 6–7 October. Full days resume on 8 October. The underground car park is closed to the public during the concerts, and the exterior lighting runs 18:00–24:00 from 30 September to 7 October. source
- Know the park's seasonal closing. The municipal listing gives public-area hours of 06:30–22:00 in its summer period and 07:00–21:30 in winter. Finish the outside walk before the listed closing time. source
- Use the plaza as the route. From Olympic Park station (奥林匹克公园站, Lines 8 and 15), walk the central pedestrian area and look across to both buildings. This keeps the free visit simple even when the paid interiors are sold out or closed for an event. source
- Pick a station exit that faces the plaza. Olympic Park station has exits A1, A2, B, C, D and E. Local guidance points to B (northeast), C (east) and D (southeast) for the Bird's Nest and Water Cube, while A2 opens toward the park's northwest gate. Follow the signs for 鸟巢 or 水立方 once above ground. Caveat: Single undated local-guide page for the exit directions. Two 2026 visitors (皮皮的小鼓🥁 May, 慕笙笙 Aug) name Exit B2 and write that it leads to the Bird's Nest in a few steps; concert-goers name other exits for the ticket gates (D in 拆腻思空腹 Apr 2026, E in 再吃一颗苹果🥕 Apr 2026), and 棉花糖🍭 (Aug 2026) writes Olympic Sports Center station Exit B. The station names are also mixed up in some posts. (2 travelers) source
- Do not confuse Olympic Forest Park. Olympic Forest Park (奥林匹克森林公园) is a separate green park farther north. This point covers the stadium and aquatics-center public space, so do not use the forest park's gate hours for the plaza. source
- Water Cube visit: price, hours and ID. The National Aquatics Center lists a visit-only ticket at ¥30 and a visit with the Water Light Show at ¥48, with discounted tickets for students and ages 60–64, and free entry for children under 6 or 1.2 m and people 65 and over. Its listed hours are 10:30–21:00, tickets sold until 19:50, entry until 20:00. Bring original ID for any concession because copies are not accepted; the hotline is 400-620-2022. Caveat: The page states the hours are from September 2025 and subject to daily postings; a 2 September 2026 hours notice was listed but its text was not readable. 皮皮的小鼓🥁 (May 2026) and 慕笙笙 (Aug 2026) both give ¥30 as the visit-only ticket; 慕笙笙 adds ¥15 concession and hours of 09:00–21:30 with last check at 21:00, which do not match the operator's 10:30–21:00. The visit-with-show concession price (¥33) is not half of ¥48. (2 travelers) source
- Inside the Bird's Nest. The interior visit includes displays of Olympic artifacts from the 2008 and 2022 Games, a virtual-reality history tour near the entrance and a rooftop walk reached by elevator and stairs, with views of the Water Cube and the Olympic towers. The stadium still hosts events, so check the day's hours before buying. Caveat: Written by one family visitor in 2025; the post does not say which ticket tier included the rooftop walk. 武圣西西里 (Sep 2026, a product-placement video, not counted) climbed the rooftop with the ¥100 ticket and 一只小花猪 (Oct 2026) saw the Water Cube from above. (2 travelers) source
- Bird's Nest interior: ¥40 stand-level visit or ¥100 full tour. Two interior tickets exist. The basic visit, ¥40 (¥20 concession), covers only the first level of the stands and not the pitch; the full panoramic tour, ¥100 (¥80 concession), adds the upper levels and the rooftop walkway. The basic ticket is sold on site at the tourist-visit entrance beside the KL gate and not online. Caveat: 小黄人在北京 (May 2026) wrote the ¥40/¥20 prices and the on-site-only sale; 南柱赫老婆🥕 (Aug 2025, older than 12 months) wrote that the ¥40 ticket covers only the first stand level and the ¥100 ticket the upper floors and roof; 皮皮的小鼓🥁 (May 2026), 慕笙笙 (Aug 2026, with ¥80 concession) and 一只小花猪 (Oct 2026) give ¥100. A masked commenter (Sept 2026) wrote that the online mini-program lists only the panoramic tour. No operator price list was read. (5 travelers) source
- Night lights: switch-on times vary, plan to arrive early. The two buildings are lit after dark and you can watch from the free plaza. Visitors give different switch-on times, from about 18:20–18:40 to 19:40, and switch-off at 21:30 or 22:00, so be there about half an hour before dusk. The Bird's Nest's golden steel frame and the Water Cube's blue bubbles photograph best at the blue hour. Caveat: 皮皮的小鼓🥁 (May 2026) says about 19:40 on and 22:00 off in summer; 慕笙笙 (Aug 2026) says 18:40 for the Bird's Nest, 18:20 for the Water Cube and 21:30 off; 喵星人的亲子游记 (Sept 2025, older than 12 months) says about 20:00 on and 22:00 off. A masked commenter (Aug 2026) says the lights were off on a concert day. The operator's National Day notice gives 18:00–24:00 for the Bird's Nest lighting from 30 Sep to 7 Oct only; no standing schedule was found. (2 travelers) source
- Photo spots: the avenue's central axis, the pool and the Datun Road bridge. For both buildings in one frame, stand on the central axis of the landscape avenue (景观大道) between them. Other spots are the pool behind the Bird's Nest for reflections, the Datun Road bridge (大屯路桥) for a wide view, and the pedestrian overpass near the Olympic Tower's south gate. Caveat: Only 皮皮的小鼓🥁 (May 2026) is within 12 months and names the central axis; the pool and the bridge are from 喵星人的亲子游记 (Sept 2025) and the overpass from 红苹果 (Jun 2025). A masked commenter asks whether you queue for a security check at these spots; no answer appears in the collected comments. (3 travelers) source
- Expect to walk: no shared bikes inside the plaza. The central plaza is free to enter after a security check, and shared bikes cannot be ridden inside it, so plan to walk between the two buildings. A small tripod helps for evening photos. Caveat: One Aug 2026 post (慕笙笙) says the security check and the bike restriction; masked commenters on another post (Jan–Feb 2026) ask whether a security check or reservation is needed for the plaza and no answer appears in the collected comments. source
- Concert nights: road closures from about 16:00 and heavy crowds at the stations. On concert nights the roads around the stadium are partly closed from about 16:00, so a taxi may not reach the gates and the subway is the better way in. After the show the Olympic Park exits queue for about half an hour and nearby stations can be closed for a time. Check the dated Beijing Subway notice before travelling on a concert day. Caveat: 再吃一颗苹果🥕 (Apr 2026) says the closures start at 16:00; 孟宝儿 (Jun 2025, older than 12 months) wrote that Olympic Sports Center station was closed after a concert the previous year and that the walk to Beitucheng took half an hour; Jane爱摆烂 (Sept 2026) advises taxis to the D/E gate because the control area is smaller there. These are concert-goers' notes, not an operator notice. (3 travelers) source
- Eat at Xin'ao Shopping Center beside the station exit. The Xin'ao Shopping Center (新奥购物中心), connected to the Tianhong department store (天虹商场), sits right at the Olympic Park station exits. It has fast food, Beijing dishes, hot pot and Western food at many price levels. Eat there before dark and come out for the lights. Caveat: 皮皮的小鼓🥁 (May 2026) and Jane爱摆烂 (Sept 2026) both place it at the station exit; no menu prices or opening hours were given. (2 travelers) source
- Water Cube concessions accept a foreign student card or a valid foreign passport. For the Water Cube's discounted and free tickets the listed proof includes a foreign student card and a valid foreign passport, along with Chinese-issued certificates. Show the original at both the ticket window and the gate; photocopies are not valid. Caveat: From the Water Cube operator's visit-discount page; the page does not say whether the foreign card must show a particular school or age. source
