Why go
798 Art District (798艺术区) puts contemporary galleries inside former industrial buildings. The outdoor lanes are free to wander, while individual exhibitions and events may charge or ask for a reservation. Spend time on the factory structure as well as the art; this is a district, not one museum with a single ticket desk.
What to do
- Walk the factory lanes. Enter the 798 area at Jiuxianqiao Road and explore its public lanes. Brick walls, pipes and former factory spaces explain why the galleries here feel unlike a conventional museum.
- Choose one exhibition. Check current signs for a gallery or exhibition that interests you. The district itself is free, while named exhibitions can require a separate ticket or reservation.
- Explore the design spaces. Between art venues, look at design shops and public installations in the wider 798·751 zone. The government describes arts, design and media uses across this former industrial area.
- Don't miss: 798·751 includes many independent venues; no single district ticket covers all exhibitions.
- Best time: Daytime when galleries are more likely to open
Practical details
- Hours: Public district open all day; galleries vary
- The government page says the zone is open all day; individual galleries set their own hours.
- Galleries run 10:00–18:00 or 11:00–19:00 and some close on Mondays; evening performances run about 19:30–22:30.
- Admission: Free district; some exhibitions ticketed
- Named exhibitions and events may use WeChat, Youzan, Damai or on-site ticketing.
- Booking: No booking for district walk
- Passport accepted: unknown — The district itself is free and needs no reservation; individual exhibitions set their own ticketing, and passport use at each venue was not documented.
- For a specific paid exhibition, use that venue’s own ticket page.
- Last admission: No single last-entry time
- Time to allow: 2–3 hr
- Getting there: Line 12 Gaojiayuan · 10–20 min walk
- Metro Line 12 to Gaojiayuan (高家园), about 10 min walk
- Show a taxi driver: 朝阳区酒仙桥路2号 北京798艺术区
- The operator also lists Line 14 Wangjing South or Jiangtai as longer-walk alternatives; walking times come from Kitty71 (about 10 minutes from Gaojiayuan) and a content-farm guide (15–20 minutes, flagged commercial); no source names a subway exit.
- Chinese route posts name West Gate 2 (西2门) and West Gate 4 (西4门) as entrances; the 10-minute walk from Gaojiayuan Exit A is from a 2025 post that is too old to count (微笑豆), and no 2026 post names a subway exit. The "South Gate (Gate 4)" label appears only in a content-farm guide; neither municipal page names a gate.
- Foreign visitors: No ID check for public district walk
Not found yet
- transport.metro[0].exit: No source names the Gaojiayuan exit to use; the 2025 post that says Exit A is older than 12 months and 2026 posts name only the gates (西2门, 西4门). (searched: operator visitor guide, Beijing municipal English page, Xiaohongshu, English blog)
- booking.passport.accepted: Only some exhibitions are ticketed and each venue sets its own rules; no source states whether a foreign passport works for the ¥0 mini-program orders or paid tickets. (searched: operator visitor guide, UCCA visit page, English blog, Xiaohongshu)
Traveler tips
- Take Line 12 to Gaojiayuan. Ride Beijing Subway Line 12 to Gaojiayuan (高家园), the nearest station, and follow the direction signs for roughly 10–20 minutes on foot. Line 14 to Wangjing South (望京南) or Jiangtai (将台) also reaches 798 but means a longer walk or a short taxi. For a taxi, show the driver 北京798艺术区, 酒仙桥路2号. Caveat: Walking times differ by which gate you head for. Kitty71 (Aug 2026) walked about 10 minutes from Gaojiayuan; the 15–20 minute figure appears only in a content-farm guide (tripchina.me, flagged commercial). source
- Treat 798 as a district, not one venue. The 798·751 zone holds hundreds of independent arts and design businesses with no single ticket office. Save the address or room number of any named exhibition before you go, because “798” alone is a large area and a taxi may drop you far from your venue. If an event address says 751, check the gate and walking route instead of assuming it is next door. source
- Walk the lanes free; check each exhibition's ticket. The outdoor lanes cost nothing and need no booking. Some exhibitions described as free still ask for a ¥0 order in the official 798 Art Zone WeChat mini-program, while others sell tickets through Youzan, Damai or at the venue door. Look up the named exhibition's page before queuing, and do not buy a general 798 ticket. Caveat: 啊林子 (May and Aug 2026, one author) posts monthly lists of 14–16 free gallery shows and writes that one gallery asked for a reservation a day ahead; 北京玩乐指北 (Sep 2026) found the Hyundai Motorstudio show free. Each show has its own dates, so the lists run out of date within weeks. Masked commenters asked which gate to use, what time galleries close and whether Monday is closed; no answer appears in the collected comments. The ¥0 order is placed in a WeChat mini-program; whether a foreign phone number or account can place it is not documented. (2 travelers) source
- Plan around gallery hours, not district hours. The district is open all day, but most galleries run 10:00–18:00 or 11:00–19:00 and some close on Mondays. Evening performances run about 19:30–22:30. UCCA is open Tuesday to Sunday 10:00–19:00 with last entry at 18:30. On a Monday the lanes and public art are open but the major galleries are shut. Caveat: Gallery hours, Monday closures and the evening-performance times are from the operator's visitor guide; UCCA's hours are from its own visit page. source
- Stay on for dinner or a show. Cafés and restaurants in the district stay open until about 22:30, and performances start around 19:30. That makes 798 workable as an evening stop after the galleries close at 18:00 or 19:00. Caveat: 北京玩乐指北 (Sep 2026) describes an evening at the Wa Factory (蛙厂) rock venue with about 100 people queuing at 18:00 and a Minnan puppet-theatre party at another venue; those are single events. Masked commenters (2025) say some galleries close at 18:00. source
- Pay for UCCA at the front desk or in WeChat. UCCA Center for Contemporary Art (尤伦斯当代艺术中心) sells tickets through its WeChat official account and at the front desks, which take cash and credit cards. Prices vary by exhibition; students, seniors and disabled guests get discounts, and tickets are non-refundable. Caveat: The sources describe UCCA only; other venues set their own payment methods. source
- Use the English version of the 798 site. The official 798 website has an English version, and its WeChat mini-program lists exhibitions, schedules and shops. Check current shows there before choosing an anchor exhibition, since the programme changes often. Caveat: Whether the mini-program itself has English screens was not checked. source
- Follow a south-to-north route. Start at West Gate 4 (西4门) on Jiuxianqiao Road and walk north: graffiti streets, Meet Museum, UCCA, Bauhaus Plaza, Train Square, smaller galleries, then 751 D·Park. Allow 3–4 hours for the full loop and 2–3 hours for a lighter visit with a meal. Pick one exhibition as your anchor and let the lanes, shops and Ceramics Street fill the rest; the brick factory buildings and the graffiti tunnel are worth a slow look. Caveat: Two route posts (小萌美少女 Oct 2025, 顾鸣杰 Apr 2026) follow the same south-to-north order; 小萌美少女 enters at West Gate 2 (西2门) and leaves at West Gate 4 (西4门) and 顾鸣杰 enters at West Gate 4 (西4门) on Jiuxianqiao Road. The 'South Gate (Gate 4)' name appears only in a content-farm guide (tripchina.me, flagged commercial); neither municipal page names a gate. 皮皮虎去哪玩 (Oct 2025, brand-sponsored) gives about 4 hours for a similar route and is not counted. - Go on a weekday morning. Go on a weekday morning, when galleries are open and the lanes are calmer than at weekends. A Saturday morning in summer was not busy yet but far from empty, with families and other international visitors. A municipal city-walk itinerary also places 798 in the morning. Caveat: The 'Tuesday to Friday is best' advice appears only in a content-farm guide (tripchina.me, flagged commercial) and is not used. Crowd levels come from individual reports and change with events and holidays. 北京玩乐指北 (Sep 2026) found a craft shop so crowded on a Saturday that there was no room to stand, and an exhibition opening 'full of people'. (2 travelers) source
- Mostly coffee shops now, according to one return visitor. Expect mostly coffee and bubble-tea shops rather than galleries selling original art. A return visitor (Able_Substance_6393, Nov 2025) estimated about 90% of the businesses were coffee shops or bubble-tea places and found only about three selling original paintings. Caveat: One visitor's own count on one morning; the Reddit date shown is the thread's. 北京玩乐指北 (Sep 2026) also calls 798 'increasingly commercial' yet spent ten hours there on shows, shops and a concert. (2 travelers) source
- Retro train cars and old industrial relics. For photos, the old train cars and industrial remnants are the draw. Caveat: 顾鸣杰 (Apr 2026) says Train Square (火车头广场) has many photo angles and is worth lingering at; 小萌美少女 (Oct 2025) lists it on a walking route. (3 travelers) source
- Enter at West Gate 2 or West Gate 4 and walk the main street. Route posts enter 798 at West Gate 2 (西2门), about ten minutes' walk from Gaojiayuan station, or at West Gate 4 (西4门) on Jiuxianqiao Road. Both lead to the main street between Hyundai Motorstudio and Train Square. Put the gate name, not just 798, into your map or taxi app. Caveat: 小萌美少女 (Oct 2025) uses West Gate 2 in and West Gate 4 out; 顾鸣杰 (Apr 2026) starts at West Gate 4; the ten-minute walk from Gaojiayuan Exit A is from 微笑豆 (Aug 2025, older than 12 months). A masked commenter (Jul 2025) asks why not leave Gaojiayuan by Exit B and enter a small side door; no answer appears. The "South Gate (Gate 4)" label appears only in a content-farm guide (tripchina.me, flagged commercial); the municipal pages do not name a gate. (3 travelers) source
- One-hour fast route if you are short of time. If you only have an hour, enter at West Gate 4 (西4门) on Jiuxianqiao Road and walk straight on past Hyundai Motorstudio (现代汽车文化中心), Meet Museum (遇见博物馆), UCCA and Bauhaus Plaza. Continue 100 m to Train Square (火车头广场) and leave from there. A side branch at Bauhaus Plaza reaches the Waihake (激流岛) cake shop. Caveat: One Apr 2026 post (顾鸣杰) by someone who has done this two or three times before a flight; a masked commenter (Jul 2026) asked about luggage storage and another (May 2026) asked whether a seven-hour layover is enough, and no answers appear in the collected comments. source
- Hyundai Motorstudio's show is free, quiet and has clean toilets. Hyundai Motorstudio (现代汽车文化中心) on the main street has a free exhibition with audio guides, fewer visitors than the busier galleries and clean toilets. The guide starts with the first-floor hall, so allow extra time. Caveat: One Sep 2026 post (北京玩乐指北) describes the show, the audio guide and the toilets. Exhibitions change, so check what is on. source
