Why go
Gongchen Bridge (拱宸桥) marks the southern end of the Beijing–Hangzhou Grand Canal in northern Hangzhou. Around it sit the Qiaoxi Historic Block with free craft museums, the Grand Canal Museum on Canal Square, and Xiaohe Straight Street a short walk south. It is a free, walkable half day away from West Lake, best reached by a ¥3 water bus along the canal.
What to do
- Cross Gongchen Bridge. The Ming-era triple-arch stone bridge is about 98 m long and 16 m high, with carved beasts on the guard blocks and a pavilion at the east end.
- Ride the water bus from Wulinmen. Line 1 is the ¥3 public boat that runs along the canal to the Gongchen Bridge pier.
- Wander Qiaoxi and its craft museums. The west-bank lanes and old mill buildings hold free umbrella, fan and knife-scissors-sword museums and a handicraft hall.
- Walk south to Xiaohe Park and Xiaohe Street. About 1.5 km down the canal bank, Xiaohe Straight Street keeps lantern-lit riverside houses where three waterways meet.
- Visit the Grand Canal Museum. The renovated museum on Canal Square explains the canal's history and Hangzhou's link to it.
- Take an evening canal cruise. Night boats run from Gongchen Bridge and Wulinmen piers and pass the lit bridge and old districts.
- Don't miss: The bridge from the water or the east bank at dusk, when its lighting comes on.
- Best time: Late afternoon into dusk
- Skip if: The museums are on their closing day, or you expect Xiaohe Street to be an untouched old town; it is a lived-in district with shops.

Traveler tips
- One stop: bridge, Qiaoxi, Xiaohe Street and Canal Square. Gongchen Bridge (拱宸桥), the Qiaoxi Historic Block on its west bank, Xiaohe Straight Street (小河直街) about 1.5 km south and Canal Square (运河广场) on the east bank are all outdoor public spaces with no entry charge. The bridge is a Ming-era stone arch about 98 m long and 16 m high at the southern end of the Grand Canal. Shops and cafés keep their own hours, usually from about 10:00 to the evening. Caveat: Free, all-day access is stated for the Qiaoxi block by 流汁猫兒 (Trip.com Moments, Aug 2026) and for Xiaohe Street by a lodging-site article (住哪去民宿网, Aug 2026, a commercial site); the 1.5 km distance comes from China for Travelers (Aug 2026). The district government page gives the bridge dimensions. source
- The ¥3 water bus runs from Wulinmen to the bridge pier. Water-bus Line 1 (水上巴士1号线) follows the Grand Canal from Wulinmen to the Gongchen Bridge pier. It is public transport, not a tour cruise: ¥3 per person and children under 1.3 m free. Boats run about every 30 minutes in daytime and the last services leave about 18:00. One Spring Festival visitor heard the wait at Pujia pier for Water Bus Line 1 could be two to three hours, so explored Gongchen Bridge first and boarded at Canal World in the opposite direction, waiting under ten minutes. Main Grand Canal blocks can be packed during Golden Week, so go very early. Caveat: Fare and child rules come from Bendibao (Apr 2026). The travel blog (May 2026) confirms ¥3 and an orderly queue. The 30-minute interval and 18:00 last boat are from China for Travelers, a commercial guide; Bendibao publishes the timetable as an image, and the operator changes timings, so call 0571-88024618 or check the pier notice. 左左de日常 (6 Aug 2026) boards line 1 at Pujia pier for ¥3 and pays by phone bus code to Gongchen Bridge; 木言 (29 Aug 2026) boards at Wulinmen; 卢小君嬉游记 (27 Jun 2026) lists line 1 as the 50-minute classic canal line that starts at Pujia and passes Gongchen Bridge and Xiaohe Street, and advises riding from the terminus where queues are short. The Pujia wait is hearsay; the sub-ten-minute wait at Canal World is first-hand. The Golden Week line is planning advice from another commenter. (7 travelers) source
- Pay the water bus with Alipay, a UnionPay card or exact cash. The water bus is unmanned. Pay with Alipay's Hangzhou transit card, a bus IC card or a UnionPay card, or put exact cash in the box, because no change is given. WeChat Pay is not in the list Bendibao prints, so set up Alipay first. Caveat: Both Bendibao pages repeat the same payment list (Apr 2026 and Sep 2025). One English guide says WeChat Pay also works, so check at the pier. source
- By metro, use Line 5: Gongchen Bridge East or Grand Canal station. Line 5 reaches the area from two stations. Gongchen Bridge East (拱宸桥东) is about a 10–12 minute walk to the bridge and the Qiaoxi block. Grand Canal (大运河) station is about 11–12 minutes from Qiaoxi. Bus stop Gongchen Bridge West (拱宸桥西站) is served by buses 1, 79, 98 and 129. For the Arts & Crafts Museum, leave Grand Canal station by Exit D. Caveat: Exit D at Grand Canal is given by Mitchell Daniel 16 and by Bendibao (May 2026) for the Arts & Crafts Museum, while 流汁猫兒 says A. 流汁猫兒 says B for Gongchen Bridge East; gracecanyon and China for Travelers give only the station and a walking time. - Qiaoxi's craft museums are free and share one reservation. Qiaoxi holds the Hangzhou Arts & Crafts Museum group: the Umbrella, Fan and Knife-Scissors-Sword museums plus the Hangzhou handicraft hall. Entry is free, opening is 09:00–16:30 with last entry at 16:00, and the group closes on Tuesdays. One reservation made on the 'Hangzhou Arts & Crafts Museum' WeChat account works for the umbrella, fan and knife-scissors-sword museums. Hands-on craft sessions in the handicraft hall are charged separately. Caveat: The city tourism bureau page lists the group as open Wednesday to Monday, which matches Bendibao (May 2026) and Mitchell Daniel 16 on Tuesday closing; gracecanyon and 流汁猫兒 wrote Monday, which does not match. On reservations the posts differ: Mitchell says weekdays need none, 流汁猫兒 says online reservation is required. 流汁猫兒 adds that Taiwan compatriot permits are accepted for booking; no source tests a passport. On the closed day the 2026 Xiaohongshu authors split: 带娃看世界呀 (15 Sep 2026) and 糖丸碎碎言 (13 Jul 2026) say Tuesday, while 木言 (29 Aug 2026) and 杭州遛娃情报局 (24 Sep 2026) write Monday; the city tourism page and Bendibao say Tuesday. On booking, 今天不赶路 (26 Sep 2026) and 糖丸碎碎言 say a reservation is needed, and 杭州遛娃情报局 and 木言 write that on weekdays you can swipe an ID, with a reservation needed on weekends and holidays. All write last entry at 16:00 and the handicraft hall at 09:30–17:30 (糖丸碎碎言). (8 travelers) source
- Canal Square's Grand Canal Museum is free but closed on Mondays. The Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal Museum (中国京杭大运河博物馆, Canal Square 1) stands on the east bank beside the bridge. It reopened in 2023 after a four-month renovation, with more than 600 objects in a permanent exhibition, a Hangzhou-and-the-canal exhibition and a digital room. It is free and opens 09:00–16:30 with last entry at 16:00; it is closed on Mondays outside public holidays. Caveat: The renovation and exhibition facts come from the city government's English report (Sep 2023). The 09:00–16:30 hours and 16:00 last entry are in the museum's National Day 2026 notice and a 2022 Bendibao notice; the Monday closure rests on the 2022 notice only, and the 2022 notice also describes real-name reservation through the museum's WeChat account, which is not confirmed as the current rule. 摇到一百万 (14 Apr 2026) and 小碗子cc (23 Jun 2025) found it walk-in with no reservation, 糖丸碎碎言 (13 Jul 2026) writes 09:00–16:30 with Monday closed, and 小碗子cc (23 Jun 2025) just made it in before the 16:00 cut-off at the 16:30 closing but missed the four Qiaoxi museums, which also stop entry at 16:00; 摇到一百万 says half an hour is enough there. - Evening cruises: pick Gongchen Bridge pier or Wulinmen, and read the reviews first. In autumn 2026 the canal night cruise departed from Gongchen Bridge pier at 19:00 and 20:00 and from Wulinmen pier at 19:00 and 20:20. One traveller paid ¥120 for the 19:00 Wulinmen trip, runs in an air-conditioned boat with commentary and goes to Gongchen Bridge and back in about an hour without stops. Reviewers considered the ¥120 Wulinmen night cruise poor value: the boat is fully enclosed, the windows are dirty or covered with stickers, the middle seats see nothing, and the commentary runs only on the way out. Running children and a quiet speaker can spoil the trip. The ¥3 water bus covers the same canal with large windows, and some travellers still enjoy the cruise as a family evening at blue hour. Buy the night-cruise ticket in the WeChat mini-program 杭州运河游船 up to seven days ahead, including the same day. At the Wulinmen pier go to the lower ground floor, exchange the QR code for a paper ticket by about 18:30, and board from 18:45 for a 19:00 departure. Wulinmen pier is five minutes from Wulin Square station exit A: look for the KFC and take the lift down. Seats are assigned in seven rows, and the middle block sees little. Caveat: Departure times are from the 2026 Hangzhou Wonderful Night list published on 14 Sep 2026, which gives no end date; Mitchell Daniel 16 (Sep 2026) reports the 19:00 and 20:20 Wulinmen sailings, and China for Travelers quotes about ¥110–140. Boarding starts about ten minutes before departure and seats are assigned. 木可游记 (22 Jul 2025) recorded the 19:00 and 20:00 sailings, and 大潼小沐 (9 Sep 2026) the 19:00 and 20:20 sailings. 时光记录者 (30 Aug 2025), 木可游记 (22 Jul 2025), 你拉不出臭臭 (23 Mar 2025) and 猫头猫脑 (5 Aug 2026) are all critical; 大潼小沐 (9 Sep 2026) enjoyed the 19:00 sailing with a child and reports 19:00 and 20:20 departures. A February 2025 review (一飞冲天的火箭) quotes ¥168 for the round trip. 木可游记 (22 Jul 2025) gives the sequence and the 19:30 turn at Gongchen Bridge and 20:00 return; 大潼小沐 (9 Sep 2026) adds that rain can stop the service and points to the same account for tickets. Check the pier notices on the day. (6 travelers) source
- Boat day passes were offered in 2024 and may not be on sale. In 2024 the operator sold passes for unlimited rides between four piers: Wulinmen, Xiangji Temple, Xiaohe Park and Gongchen Bridge. A cruise-boat day pass cost ¥80 for 10:00–17:00 and a water-bus pass cost ¥20 for 09:30–18:00; passengers had to leave the boat and queue again at each end. Ask at the pier whether a pass is on sale now. Caveat: Both sources are from 2024 (April for the ¥80 pass, the National Day week for the ¥20 pass); no 2026 sale was found. source
- Go late afternoon for the bridge at dusk. Gongchen Bridge is lit around 18:00, and the “blue hour” about 18:30–19:30 gives the reflected-light moment. Walk the lanes first from about 17:30, then climb the bridge for sunset; 08:30–10:00 is quiet for the old street, and 14:00–16:00 is cool inside the museums. Caveat: Timings are from China for Travelers (Aug 2026, a commercial guide) and one traveller (流汁猫兒, Aug 2026); sunset times shift through the year. 木言 (29 Aug 2026) also recommends evening, when the lights come on, for the bridge and the lanes. (2 travelers) source
- Look for the stone beasts and the pavilion at the bridge. Four ship-guard blocks stand around the main arch, each carved with a water beast (bāxià, 趴蝮), and an octagonal two-roof pavilion at the east end holds a stele recording the bridge's rebuilding. The bridge was destroyed and rebuilt three times, and the bridge seen today is the 1885 rebuild. Caveat: Source is the district government's page (Apr 2024); the 1885 repair is stated there. 糖丸碎碎言 (13 Jul 2026) explains the beasts at the piers as 蚣蝮, water-guardian figures that also cushion boats against the stone piers. source
- A four-hour walking loop links the sights. A loop of about four hours runs Canal Square → Gongchen Bridge → Qiaoxi → Xiaohe Park → Xiaohe Straight Street → Dadou Road → Xiangji Temple, ending at Xiangji Temple metro station. Xiaohe Street is about 1.5 km south of the bridge and Dadou Road about 2.3 km. Caveat: Route from 流汁猫兒 (Aug 2026); distances from China for Travelers (Aug 2026). Dadou Road and Xiangji Temple are further along the canal. 摇到一百万 (14 Apr 2026) takes six to eight hours with the museums, from Gongchen Bridge East exit B through Qiaoxi, Xiaohe Park, Dadou Road and Xiangji Temple; 小碗子cc (23 Jun 2025) walked 3.6 km in five hours and reached the museums too late. (3 travelers) source
- Plan for a street without toilets in the lanes. Public toilets are mainly in the museums and on the main street, not inside the narrow lanes, and convenience shops are few outdoors. In summer the canal side has mosquitoes, in the evening it is windy. Bring water, repellent in summer and a thin layer after dark. Caveat: Single traveller report (流汁猫兒, Aug 2026). source
- Crowds gather on the main street but not in the old lanes. At weekends and holidays the main street of Qiaoxi fills up while the side lanes stay quiet, so duck into the lanes for photos. The Umbrella Museum can be quiet with few visitors on a regular day. Caveat: Two single-day observations from Aug 2026; neither covers National Day week. (2 travelers) source
- A 3-hour canal-and-Qiantang River cruise through the Sanbao lock was ¥99, then ¥168. The Qianyun Hengtong line leaves Wulinmen, passes the Sanbao lock where the water rises about three metres in ten to fifteen minutes, and shows the Qiantang River light show for about half an hour from the river. One traveller found the light show good but the stop-in-place viewing dull, with only three boats on the river. Arrive 15 minutes early, bring a bottle (no drinks are sold, but you can refill), and book in the 杭州运河游船 mini-program. Caveat: 卡姐每天在进步 (18 May 2026) paid ¥99 for three hours and later updated that the adult fare had risen to ¥168; two replies in July advise against it. Prices and schedules change by season. source
- Buses 1 and 79 reach Gongchen Bridge West without a transfer. Without the metro, bus 1 or 79 runs straight to Gongchen Bridge West (拱宸桥西), the stop for the Qiaoxi museums on the west bank; Canal Square (运河广场) is the other stop for the east side. Caveat: 今天不赶路 (26 Sep 2026) names buses 1 and 79 and the Xiaohe Road gate and says walking from Gongchen Bridge East station is about 1.2 km over the bridge; the facades of the Qiaoxi museum buildings were under repair at the time of that visit, and visitors then entered and left by the main Xiaohe Road gate. 木言 (29 Aug 2026) names the two stops and gives ¥5 an hour at the fan museum car park, tight at weekends. (2 travelers) source
- Start at Xiangji Temple metro and walk south along the canal to the bridge. A common direction starts at Xiangji Temple station on line 3 (exit C), walks the Dadou Road quarter, then Xiaohe Street and Xiaohe Park with its oil-tank cafes, and ends at Gongchen Bridge West, taking line 5 from Grand Canal station exit D. The legs are under 2 km each, flat, and the whole loop takes half a day. Caveat: 江浙野行风 (7 Jun 2026) ends at Gongchen Bridge East exit B after the museums; 芝士麻薯球 (5 Jan 2026) ends at Grand Canal exit D. (2 travelers) source
