Why go
Zhongshan Park (中山公园) opened in 1914 as Jessfield Park and mixes an English landscape layout with Chinese garden corners. West Shanghai residents come here to dance, boat and picnic. It also backs onto Suzhou Creek: a side gate leads to a short creek cruise past the old St John's University campus.
What to do
- Ride a boat on Chenjia Pond. Hire a five-seat electric boat at the dock near Gate 1 and circle Chenjia Pond (陈家池), about 6,500 m² with a small island and a waterside pavilion. Boats run 09:00–17:00.
- Cruise Suzhou Creek. From Zhongshan Park Pier (中山公园码头) on Wanhangdu Road by Gate 3, a 30-minute loop passes the historic East China University of Political Science and Law campus and Huazheng Bridge.
- Picnic on the big lawn. The largest lawn covers about 8,000 m². Bring a mat and snacks; a 2025 travel blog recommends this spot for picnics.
- Find old bridges and trees. Look for the stone bridge 'Hongqiao Zhengxue' (虹桥蒸雪), which has mist machines, plus the Lovers' Bridge (情人桥), the lotus pond, an English-style gate and century-old plane trees.
- Watch the evening dancers. At dusk, local residents fill the squares for group dancing, tai chi and exercise. It is the best time to see everyday Shanghai park life.
- Don't miss: The 2023 Ningxin Garden (凝心花园) and the Suzhou Creek footpath at Gate 3, where the park meets the river.
- Best time: Late afternoon to dusk
- Skip if: Skip it if you only have one or two days; it is a neighbourhood park, not a sight in itself.

Traveler tips
- Walk in any time, day or night. Zhongshan Park went from paid entry to free entry to 24-hour opening, and in 2023 it took down the wall between Gates 1 and 4, added three new openings and opened its Wanhangdu Road side. Entry is free, with no ticket, app or ID. Older pages that list 05:00–21:00 date from before the 24-hour change. source
- Rent a boat by Gate 1 before 17:00. The park's boat dock is near Gate 1 (长宁路780号). A 2024 district guide lists 12 five-seat electric boats at ¥80 per half hour, running 09:00–17:00 all year on Chenjia Pond (陈家池), the lake with a small island and a waterside pavilion. Arrive by about 16:00 for a full half hour on the water. Caveat: 2024 price; one Trip.com post quotes ¥80 per hour, so check the board at the dock. source
- Cruise Suzhou Creek from Gate 3. Leave by Gate 3 on Wanhangdu Road (万航渡路) to reach Zhongshan Park Pier (中山公园码头). A 30-minute loop costs ¥60 per person, and a 60-minute trip to Sihang Warehouse Pier (四行码头) costs ¥100. Children aged 0–6 ride free but still need a ticket; ages 7–14 pay half. Tickets are sold through the 悠游苏州河 WeChat account. Caveat: Prices and routes come from February 2024. A May 2023 passenger entered a passport number in the Suzhou Creek mini-program and paid ¥60 for a 30-minute ride; these are dated trip details, not a current fare or ID requirement. The passenger source does not verify the ¥100 route or children’s rules; those remain with the district government listing. source
- Picnic on the big lawns. Zhongshan Park has several open lawns where people sit on the grass. A 2025 travel blog suggests bringing a blanket, snacks, games and a kite, and notes there are cafés and toilets around the park if you forget something. source
- Come at dusk for local life. Parks in Shanghai fill up at dusk, when residents come out for group dancing, tai chi and evening exercise, and a 2025 blog recommends Zhongshan Park in the evening for exactly this. Stand at the edge of a square and watch; it is fine to join a dance at the back if you are invited. Caveat: One blogger's recommendation. source
- Look for the misty stone bridge. Walk to the stone bridge known as 'Hongqiao Zhengxue' (虹桥蒸雪); the park has fitted mist machines so it appears to float in fog. Nearby are the lotus pond, the Lovers' Bridge (情人桥), an English-style gate and century-old plane trees, plus the redesigned Ningxin Garden (凝心花园), finished in July 2023. source
- Walk the Suzhou Creek historic stretch. At Gate 3 the park meets the Suzhou Creek footpath by East China University of Political Science and Law (华东政法大学), the former St John's University campus. The district counts 27 century-old buildings along this roughly 900 m stretch, passing Huazheng Bridge (华政桥). Walk it on foot for free if you skip the cruise. source
- Ask at the visitor centre by Gate 1. A Changning tourist information centre stands at 780 Changning Road, by Gate 1. It was refitted in winter 2025–26 and can help with maps and nearby sights. Gate 1 is also the busiest side, facing the shopping area above Zhongshan Park station. source
- Let children loose in the small funfair. The north-west corner of the park has a small amusement area with children's rides, plus open lawns where kids can run. A 2025 family blog rates it a good stop for children. Ride tickets are separate from the free park entry. Caveat: Ride prices and hours are not published. source
- A resident favourite, not a tourist sight. On r/shanghai, a resident lists Zhongshan Park and Fuxing Park as their two favourites and adds that the Suzhou Creek paths nearby are pleasant and pet-friendly. Come here to relax among locals rather than for one famous sight, and combine it with Yuyuan Road or the creek walk. Caveat: One resident's comment, April 2025. source
