Why go
Zhangyuan (张园) was a celebrated late-19th-century garden, once called the 'first garden of Shanghai', and later became a dense block of shikumen lane houses. After restoration it holds 13 protected historic buildings plus many listed ones, now filled with luxury brands, design shops and cafés. It is quieter and newer-feeling than Xintiandi, and the first-opened area of the East section opened at the end of June 2026, linking through to the West Nanjing Road malls.
What to do
- Wander the brick lanes. Walk the grey- and red-brick lanes with tall wooden windows and stone-framed doors; skyscrapers rise right behind the old roofs. There is no set route — follow whichever lane looks interesting.
- Walk from West to the new East. Walk from the West section through shikumen lanes into the first-opened East area and along a 100 m planted corridor with bear sculptures to HKRI Taikoo Hui and the ship-shaped 'Louis' building.
- Browse shops inside old houses. Global brands such as Dolce & Gabbana sit in restored houses alongside design shops and pop-ups; the MUJI at 260 North Maoming Road is set inside a historic building.
- Stop for coffee or xiaolongbao. Cafés and terraces fill the courtyards; a solo visitor had crab xiaolongbao at Michelin-listed Lai Lai Xiaolong (莱莱小笼) nearby and found clean toilets in the area.
- Don't miss: The point where a narrow lane frames the modern towers of West Nanjing Road behind century-old brick — look up at the lane ends.
- Best time: Weekday afternoon into early evening
- Skip if: Skip it if luxury shopping and ¥60–100 coffees do not interest you and you have already seen Xintiandi.

Traveler tips
- Use West Nanjing Road station, Exits 10, 13 or 14. Take Metro Line 2, 12 or 13 to West Nanjing Road (南京西路) and use Exit 10, 13 or 14. The Jing'an district guide says each is under five minutes' walk from Zhangyuan; set 张园 or 茂名北路258号 as your map destination. source
- Walk through to the new East section. The first part of Zhangyuan East opened at the end of June 2026. Start in the West section, follow the shikumen lanes east, and you come out by Shanghai MixC (上海华润中心); a few steps further are HKRI Taikoo Hui and the 'Louis' ship building. Both malls are useful for a meal or toilets. source
- Follow the bear corridor to The Louis. In the first-opened East area, a landscaped walkway of nearly 100 m, with vines, flowers and bear sculptures, runs along the restored lane houses and leads you towards “The Louis”, the ship-shaped Louis Vuitton building. The nearby historic buildings now form part of the walk-through district. source
- Expect high café prices; take afternoon tea. A coffee or dessert in Zhangyuan can cost ¥60–100, and popular restaurants queue on weekend afternoons. An August 2026 visitor suggests afternoon-tea sets, which are better value than dinner, and comparing prices in the bigger West Nanjing Road malls before buying in the boutiques. source
- Claim your tax refund on site. Zhangyuan itself (258 North Maoming Road) is one of Shanghai's citywide tax-refund counters, and Fengshengli (丰盛里, Lane 245 North Maoming Road) nearby is another. Bring your passport and the store's refund form. source
- A relaxed place to walk alone. The West section averages over 50,000 visits a day (peaks above 130,000), yet two 2026 visitors still found it much less crushed than the Bund or Yu Garden because the crowd spreads through many lanes. A Japanese visitor travelling solo found clean toilets and helpful locals who showed her how to order at a nearby dumpling shop, and felt safe walking alone. (2 travelers) source
- Pair it with Xintiandi instead of Tianzifang. A visitor who has been to Shanghai ten times recommends Xintiandi plus Zhangyuan for restored shikumen: well-kept buildings, clean streets and fewer tourists than Tianzifang. Others note that Zhangyuan is now quite commercial, but the brick facades, arches and lane layout are easy to read. (3 travelers) source
