Why go
Yuyuan Bazaar (豫园商城) is the free, busy market town wrapped around the ticketed Yuyuan Garden. Here are the zigzag Nine-Turn Bridge, the Huxinting teahouse, Nanxiang soup dumplings, the City God Temple and lantern-hung upturned roofs. It is loud and commercial, but it is where many visitors get their first taste of old-Shanghai snacks, and it is at its best after dark.
What to do
- Cross the Nine-Turn Bridge. Walk the zigzag Nine-Turn Bridge (九曲桥) over the pond to the Huxinting teahouse (湖心亭) in the middle of the bazaar. Neither the bridge nor the lanes need a garden ticket.
- Queue for Nanxiang soup dumplings. Nanxiang Mantou Dian (南翔馒头店, 85 Yuyuan Road, by the bridge) sells takeaway baskets from a ground-floor window; sit upstairs for crab-roe or pork xiaolongbao from about ¥35 for six.
- Graze on old-Shanghai snacks. Try pan-fried shengjian buns, black-sesame tangyuan and scallion pancakes from bazaar stalls. For a sit-down meal, Lü Bo Lang (绿波廊) overlooks the bridge and Songyue Lou (松月楼) does vegetarian buns.
- Look into the City God Temple. The City God Temple (城隍庙) is a separate Taoist venue within the bazaar. Check its own current admission terms before entering; temple access is not part of Yuyuan Garden admission.
- Come back after dark. The garden closes at 16:30, but the bazaar's lantern-lit roofs, bridge and food lanes stay lively into the evening; shops trade roughly 08:30–21:00.
- Don't miss: Nanxiang's separate takeaway window (gold signage, steam) is on the ground floor — you do not need to queue for an upstairs table to try the dumplings.
- Best time: Evenings for lanterns; weekday 14:00–17:00 for food
- Skip if: Skip it if you dislike crowds and souvenir streets; several Reddit regulars call the food-stall area over-commercialised and prefer the ticketed garden or a proper restaurant.

Traveler tips
- Know what is free and what needs a ticket. “Yu Garden” can mean several places. The bazaar lanes and Nine-Turn Bridge (九曲桥) are free public paths; Huxinting teahouse (湖心亭) and Nanxiang dumplings charge for what you order. The classical Yuyuan Garden (豫园园林) needs its own ticket and normally closes on Mondays except national public holidays. City God Temple (城隍庙) is a separate venue whose current admission terms have not been confirmed. Caveat: Temple fee reports conflict: one September 2026 post lists a ¥10 incense ticket, while an October 2026 post says entry is free. The garden operator separately confirms the public-holiday exception to Monday closure. (3 travelers) source
- Grab Nanxiang dumplings from the takeaway window. At Nanxiang Mantou Dian (南翔馒头店) beside Nine-Turn Bridge, the ground-floor takeaway window sells soup dumplings, while upstairs dining costs more. Eat each dumpling from a spoon and bite carefully to release the hot broth before finishing it. Caveat: Floor-by-floor prices come from 2026 visitor reports and may change. (2 travelers) source
- Ignore anyone inviting you to a tea shop. Around the bazaar lanes, decline unsolicited tea-shop invitations and fast-entry offers. Buy a garden ticket only at the garden gate or in the official 上海豫园 WeChat mini-program, and check snack prices before paying street sellers. (3 travelers) source
- Use Line 10 during the National Day evenings. On 30 September 2026, Line 14 Yuyuan Garden station closes from 20:00, and on 1–7 October it closes from 16:00 until service ends. Line 10 at the same station remains in service but may limit entry during peaks. The Puxi interior road ban applies 16:30–23:30; boundary roads are excluded. source
- Come back for the lanterns after dark. Walk the Nine-Turn Bridge (九曲桥) and the lantern-lit bazaar lanes after dark. Photographers in Hanfu sometimes gather around the bridge, but the public path is also used by ordinary visitors, so leave room to pass. The ordinary illuminated buildings are separate from any dated light-show programme. Caveat: Holiday crowd peaks are visitor observations from 2026; show times and decorations change by event. - Try the snacks beyond dumplings. Look for pan-fried shengjian buns (生煎) at Da Hu Chun (大壶春), black-sesame tangyuan (汤圆) at Ningbo Tangtuan, vegetarian buns at Songyue Lou (松月楼, founded 1910) and flaky scallion pancakes (葱油饼) from stalls. For a sit-down meal over the bridge, Lü Bo Lang (绿波廊) costs about ¥200 per person. source
- Claim tax refunds nearby. If you buy jewellery or souvenirs from stores that issue tax-refund forms, the Bank of China Yuyuan Garden Sub-branch at 358–360 South Henan Road (河南南路) is a citywide refund counter, so you can claim before leaving the area. Bring your passport. source
- Walk to the Bund via Shiliupu. Leave the bazaar by its east side, walk east along Fangbang Middle Road (方浜中路) to the Shanghai Old Street archway (上海老街牌坊), continue to Renmin Road (人民路) and about 10 minutes further east to the Shiliupu waterfront (十六铺). Join the Bund promenade there and walk north; the south end is much less crowded than the Nanjing Road end. The whole walk takes 30–40 minutes, so leave around 17:30 to arrive as the lights come on. Caveat: Route from a single local's post (2026-09-23); during holidays traffic control on the Bund starts in the late afternoon. source
- Use Yuyuan station Exit 7 or Exit 1. For Yuyuan Bazaar (豫园商城), Metro Line 10 or 14 stops at Yuyuan Garden (豫园站). Visitor accounts name Exit 7 near the snack lanes and Exit 1 toward City God Temple, while a separate listing measures Exit 7 to the ticketed garden North Gate. Choose your lane destination before following an exit number. Caveat: The exit-to-bazaar route lacks an official map; holiday Line 14 closures are listed in the dated update. (3 travelers) source
- Cheap morning tea at Huxinting teahouse. Huxinting Teahouse (湖心亭茶楼) sits on the Nine-Turn Bridge. A September 2026 visitor described an inexpensive ground-floor tea option and a steeper old staircase; ask for the current menu before ordering. Caveat: Single possibly promotional post; the quoted package prices were not independently confirmed and are omitted. source
