## Why go

Xujiahui (徐家汇) grew around the family land of Xu Guangqi, the Ming scholar who worked with Matteo Ricci, and became the place where Western science, education and religion first took root in Shanghai. Within a few minutes of Xujiahui station you find the red-brick St Ignatius Cathedral, the former Jesuit observatory, the old Bibliotheca Zi-Ka-Wei and the new Xujiahui Library, all set among modern malls.

## What to do

- **See St Ignatius Cathedral.** See the red-brick twin-spired St Ignatius Cathedral (徐家汇天主堂, 158 Puxi Road) from its public front square. Indoor tourist hours are not confirmed by a current cathedral notice, so enter only when the visitor gate is open.
- **Escape into Xujiahui Library.** The new Xujiahui Library (徐家汇书院) has soaring vaulted ceilings, warm wood and a central atrium with a pagoda-like installation; you can walk in straight from the metro, ideal on a rainy or hot day.
- **Book the Meteorological Museum.** The former Xujiahui Observatory (166 Puxi Road), now the Shanghai Meteorological Museum, shows antique weather instruments and hand-drawn typhoon maps in guided one-hour sessions; it is free but must be booked in its WeChat account.
- **Add a paid museum.** The Shanghai Film Museum (595 North Caoxi Road) charges ¥60; the T'ou-Sè-Wè Museum and the Bibliotheca Zi-Ka-Wei are also part of the Xujiahui Origin cluster.
- **Visit Xu Guangqi's tomb and memorial.** Guangqi Park (光启公园, 17 Nandan Road) holds the Xu Guangqi Memorial Hall, honouring the scholar who brought Western science to China.

- Don't miss: The cathedral's red-brick facade lit up at dusk against the glass towers of the Xujiahui shopping district.

- Best time: Daylight for the public square; venues vary
- Skip if: Skip the full indoor circuit if the venues you want to enter are closed or unbooked. The cathedral exterior, public square, new library and Guangqi Park still make a walk.

## Traveler tips

- **Check cathedral entry at the gate.** St Ignatius Cathedral (徐家汇天主堂, 158 Puxi Road) is free to view from the public square. Some 2026 visitors reported tourist visits on Tuesday–Saturday around 09:00–16:00, but church services and temporary closures can alter access, so inspect the gate notice before planning an indoor visit. _Caveat: First-Friday afternoon reopening and last-entry times are single-author reports, not a current diocesan visitor rule._ (2 travelers) [source](https://us.trip.com/moments/detail/shanghai-2-153140842/)
- **Dress modestly inside the cathedral.** The cathedral is an active church and the seat of the Shanghai diocese. A September 2026 guide lists shorts, short skirts, vest tops, slippers and hats as not allowed; long skirts, shirts or light jackets are fine. Keep your phone silent, use no flash, and stay off the lawns. _Caveat: Dress rules come from a visitor guide, not a posted church notice._ (2 travelers) [source](https://us.trip.com/moments/detail/shanghai-2-153140842/)
- **Photograph from the paved square.** For the cathedral facade, stand on the paved public front square and use a wide angle for both spires. Keep off the lawns and do not block worshippers or the entry path. [source](https://us.trip.com/moments/detail/shanghai-2-153140842/)
- **Book the Meteorological Museum separately.** The Shanghai Meteorological Museum (上海气象博物馆, 166 Puxi Road) requires its own reservation via its WeChat account (original ID gh_ea2d912c14c8, as listed in the city guide). An older 2023 account described Monday 11:00 releases and guided sessions, while a newer visitor gave 10:00 and 14:00 sessions; check the live account menu for current slots. _Caveat: The Monday release rule is from 10 January 2023 and may have changed. Passport acceptance is unconfirmed._ [source](https://us.trip.com/moments/detail/shanghai-2-147916539/)
- **Use Xujiahui Library on a rainy day.** Xujiahui Library (徐家汇书院) connects directly to the metro station. A July 2026 visitor planned half an hour there during a downpour and stayed three hours for the vaulted wooden interior and calm atmosphere, then walked a few minutes to the cathedral at dusk. [source](https://us.trip.com/moments/detail/shanghai-2-148895462/)
- **Expect occasional closures for church events.** The cathedral can close without much notice for religious events: a May 2026 visitor found the front gate fenced with a 停止开放 (closed) sign and could only photograph the outside. If seeing the interior matters, have a backup such as the library or Guangqi Park. [source](https://us.trip.com/moments/detail/shanghai-2-146172511/)
