## Notices in effect

- 2026-10-02 to 2026-10-07: A 2 Oct visitor saw fencing and one security entry around the historic CPC site, with a separate photo queue; follow that day’s signs.
- 2026-09-30 to 2026-10-07: Xintiandi lies south of the named Puxi motor-control boundary. Interior roads inside the bounded zone restrict cars 16:30–23:30, but the named boundary roads themselves are excluded; follow on-site directions near the edge.

## Why go

Xintiandi (新天地) keeps the brick walls and stone-framed doorways of 1920s shikumen (石库门) lane houses but fills them with restaurants, cafés and boutiques. It is a short, easy walk that shows what old Shanghai housing looked like, and it sits next to the site where the Chinese Communist Party held its first congress in 1921. It is at its best around sunset and after dark.

## What to do

- **Walk the North and South blocks.** Start from Taicang Road and follow the 412 m pedestrian street toward Xingye Road. The North Block (北里) has the busiest restaurants in old shikumen houses; the South Block (南里) is newer and calmer. Continue past the historic congress-site exterior or the separate memorial if open, then finish in the South Block.
- **Visit the first CPC congress site.** The modern Memorial Hall (中共一大纪念馆, 374 South Huangpi Road) and the original meeting house (中共一大会址, 76 Xingye Road) have separate entrances. The hall says no advance reservation; ID checks at the historic site remain a separate question.
- **Stay for dinner and the lights.** Arrive around 17:00, photograph the brick lanes in daylight, then stay for dinner as the lanterns and terraces light up. Prices in cafés and restaurants are high; walking is free.
- **Eat somewhere notable.** Restaurants, cafés and shops now fill the restored shikumen lanes. Browse menus before sitting down; merchants and prices change independently of street access.
- **Walk on to the old city.** Continue on foot toward Yuyuan through residential lanes, or pair Xintiandi with Zhangyuan for another set of restored shikumen; a French Concession walk can also end here.

- Don't miss: The original 1921 First Congress meeting house (中共一大会址) on Xingye Road is itself a shikumen house — compare it with the restaurant-converted ones next to it.

- Best time: From about 17:00 into the evening
- Skip if: Skip it if you want everyday lane life rather than a polished, pricey dining district.

## Practical details

- **Hours:** Public lanes; exact 24-hour access unconfirmed
  - A commercial travel guide describes the outdoor lanes as open 24 hours; the government heritage page describes the district but gives no access hours. The CPC Memorial Hall keeps its own official schedule.
  - The CPC Memorial Hall: 09:00–17:00, last entry 16:30, closed Mondays except public holidays.
- **Admission:** Free open district
  - Walking the outdoor public lanes has no unified admission ticket; this is an editorial distinction, not a quoted government fee rule.
  - The CPC Memorial Hall is free; shops, restaurants and private exhibitions charge separately.
- **Booking:** No district booking; memorial needs no advance booking
  - Passport accepted: unknown — The old congress site has used Chinese ID-card scanning; passport entry and memorial ID checks were not established by the official English page.
  - The CPC Memorial's English page says visitors do not need advance reservations; it bans luggage inside and runs security checks.
  - The 76 Xingye Road historic site and the modern memorial at 374 South Huangpi Road are separate visits. The memorial says no advance reservation, with security checks and no luggage; Chinese ID scanning is reported at the historic site.

## Not found yet

- transport.metro[1].exit: The CPC memorial lists the station without an exit; a third-party page says Exit 2 then 200 m along Madang Road (Line 1). (searched: official, Sogou web, third_party, Trip.com Moments)
- booking.passport.accepted: Neither the memorial English guidance nor the local site reports establish passport acceptance for the two separate entrances. (searched: memorial official English, Xiaohongshu visitor reports, Trip.com/English guides)

## Traveler tips

- **Get off at Xintiandi station, Exit 6.** Take Metro Line 10 or 13 to Xintiandi station (on Chinese maps: 一大会址·新天地) and use Exit 6, which two 2026 visitors used to walk straight into the district. Lines 1 and 14 stop at South Huangpi Road (一大会址·黄陂南路), also listed by the CPC memorial. _Caveat: The two recent Trip.com users support Exit 6 for the Xintiandi district. A January 2026 Korean post also names Exit 6, mainly for the Korean Provisional Government site; it did not survey every district entrance or the separate South Huangpi Road station._ (3 travelers) [source](https://us.trip.com/moments/detail/shanghai-2-152251612/)
- **Arrive before sunset and stay for the lights.** Come at about 17:00: photograph the red-brick shikumen walls and black doors in daylight, then stay for dinner when the street lamps, lanterns and terraces come on. Four visitors in July–September 2026 said the evening atmosphere is the main reason to come. (5 travelers) [source](https://us.trip.com/moments/detail/shanghai-2-152251612/)
- **Visit the CPC memorial without booking.** For the modern Memorial Hall of the First CPC National Congress (中共一大纪念馆, 374 South Huangpi Road), the official English visitor page says no advance reservation; it opens 09:00–17:00, last entry 16:30, and closes on Mondays except public holidays. Expect security checks and no luggage. The historic Site (中共一大会址, 76 Xingye Road) is a separate entrance where visitors reported Chinese ID scanning. _Caveat: Passport handling at either entrance was not established; ask staff before relying on the Chinese-ID visitor report._ (2 travelers) [source](https://www.xiaohongshu.com/explore/6a462fd90000000021019990)
- **Walk for free; restaurants are pricey.** Strolling the lanes costs nothing, and visitors say that alone is worthwhile. Cafés and restaurants inside are expensive by Shanghai standards, so if you are on a budget, eat elsewhere and come for a walk and one drink. [source](https://us.trip.com/moments/detail/shanghai-2-148001604/)
- **Start in the North Block, finish in the South.** The North Block (新天地北里) is the busiest part, with historic shikumen buildings housing restaurants and shops; the South Block (南里) has calmer streets and modern spaces that suit an evening walk. A July 2026 visitor suggests allowing at least 2–3 hours and coming closer to evening. [source](https://us.trip.com/moments/detail/shanghai-2-148094676/)
- **Use foreign cards and the district's services.** A 2025 municipal commerce report says every merchant in Xintiandi accepts foreign bank cards, and the district added luggage lockers, a currency-exchange point, multilingual signs and a central tax-refund point where you get the refund on the spot. Bring your passport for refunds. _Caveat: Report dated July 2025; locker and exchange locations were not given._ [source](https://www.shanghai.gov.cn/nw31406/20250707/93b77d0a95794a39a75b7e8ef69ccfed.html)
- **Walk to Yu Garden through ordinary streets.** A September 2026 visitor walked from Xintiandi to Yu Garden starting shortly before sunset and found the residential streets in between the best part. They advise leaving more time than the navigation app suggests, because you will stop for photos, and wearing comfortable shoes. [source](https://us.trip.com/moments/detail/shanghai-2-153582417/)
- **Pair it with Zhangyuan, not Tianzifang.** A visitor who has been to Shanghai ten times suggests skipping heavily commercial Tianzifang and pairing Xintiandi with Zhangyuan (张园) near West Nanjing Road: both keep restored shikumen houses, are clean and less crowded, and suit a photo walk. [source](https://us.trip.com/moments/detail/shanghai-2-153396594/)
- **End a French Concession walk here.** A 3–4 hour walking route used by one 2026 visitor goes Wukang Mansion → Wukang Road → Anfu Road → Fuxing Middle Road → Fuxing Park → Sinan Mansions → Xintiandi, so you finish with dinner in the lanes. [source](https://us.trip.com/moments/detail/shanghai-2-150482544/)
- **Combine with the Korean Provisional Government site.** If you are interested in Korean history, combine Xintiandi with the nearby former site of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea (大韩民国临时政府旧址) on Madang Road. One July 2026 post recommends seeing it first and then walking the lanes. _Caveat: Opening hours and booking for that site were not researched here._ [source](https://us.trip.com/moments/detail/shanghai-2-148001604/)
- **Expect barriers and bag checks on holidays.** During National Day, Huangpi South Road and Xingye Road around the CPC site were fenced off with a single security entrance where every bag was checked. The photo spot at the shikumen front door had its own queue, and many police and staff were managing the flow. _Caveat: One visit on 2 October 2026; the entrance pattern can change day by day._ [source](https://www.xiaohongshu.com/explore/6abf00dc0000000013019abd)
