## Why go

Xi’an City Wall forms an elevated route around the old city, with gates, watchtowers and views down the street grid. Start at Yongning Gate on the south side to see the principal gate complex and climb onto the ramparts. This entry covers the ticketed wall and its gates, not the free ring park below or Yongxingfang.

## What to do

- **Enter at Yongning Gate.** Use the South Gate (永宁门) for its gate complex and long published opening hours.
- **Walk the ramparts.** Look down both sides of the old city and its surrounding moat as you travel along the raised wall.
- **Compare the towers.** Spend time around the gate architecture before continuing to the long, exposed straight sections.

- Best time: Late afternoon for softer light
- Skip if: If stairs, exposed sun or uneven surfaces are difficult, the free streets below may be a better choice.

- **Treat other gates separately.** The wall is long and its gates need not use the South Gate timetable. - **Foreign visitors: buy online or at a window, then exchange a paper voucher.** Entry is by face scan or Chinese ID card; the e-ticket QR code was dropped in mid-2026. Foreign visitors who buy online take the document they booked with to a ticket window to exchange a paper voucher, then pass a face check at the gate; they can also buy and register at a window. Two travellers in summer 2026 bought at the South Gate ticket office without booking, and one said to bring a passport. _Caveat: From the operator’s 30 June 2026 notice republished by Shaanxi Daily, and two Reddit posts. - **Gate closing times: three agree, three conflict.** Yongning (South) and Jianguo gates stay open to 22:00 in every post that lists them, and Zhongshan to 22:00 in three of four; Anyuan, Changle and the corner entrances close at 20:00 in all. For Anding (West), Wenchang and Hanguang gates the posts disagree between 22:00 and 20:00. After 20:00 a gate that is closed to entry may still let you off. _Caveat: 西引力旅行 (2026-05) gives 22:00 for Yongning, Hanguang, Anding, Zhongshan, Jianguo and Wenchang and 20:00 for the two corners, Anyuan and Changle. 瑞瑞瑞睿 (2025-11) gives 22:00 for Yongning, Zhongshan and Jianguo and 20:00 for Changle, Anding, Anyuan, Wenchang, Hanguang, Shangde and the corners. - **Bike rental has a 65-year age limit.** Posted bike-rental rules: no children under 12, and no one over 65, may ride or be carried; 12- to 18-year-olds need an adult (a tandem or two bikes). - **Short south-wall walks: Hanguang to Yongning, or Wenchang to Jianguo.** Two short routes from the 2026 posts: Hanguang Gate → Wumu Gate → Zhuque Gate → Yongning Gate takes about 20 minutes and passes the Hanguang Gate Tang-wall museum; Wenchang Gate (next to the Beilin Museum) → Hepingmen → Jianguo Gate takes about 30 minutes. A walk of the classic Yongning → Wenchang → Hepingmen → Changle → Zhongshan stretch takes about an hour. _Caveat: 林家小九妹 (2026-01) gives the 20- and 30-minute routes; 瑞瑞瑞睿 (2025-11) and 虾堡日记 (2026-06) give the hour-long classic walk; 西引力旅行 (2026-05) gives a 2–3 hour classic route from Yongning to Jianguo; 微光心程 (2026-07) says the full circle on foot takes 6–7 hours and the sights concentrate near the South Gate. - **Re-entry with the same ID, but wait an hour.** A wall ticket lets you leave for a meal or a metro change and come back the same day by swiping the same ID. - **Bike rental in 2025–2026: ¥45 for 3 hours, ¥100 deposit.** Three Chinese visitors and a 2026 guide quote about ¥45 for 3 hours for a single bike and ¥90 for a tandem; late return is charged per 10 minutes. Kiosks stand next to the gates, and at the Yongning Gate there is about 1 km that must be walked before you pick up a new bike. _Caveat: momo (2025-09), 小成妈妈在成长 (2025-12), 大猫和狗健康 (2025-11, price table in an image) and 微光心程 (2026-07) give ¥45 for 3 hours. The deposit is ¥100 in momo and 小成妈妈; 濮钰带娃看世界 (2025-05) says ¥300. - **A full bike circle takes 1.5–3 hours and the surface is rough.** The wall is 13.74 km round.
