## Notices in effect

- 2026-09-01 to 2026-11-30: Autumn peak season: on weekends and public holidays 08:00–17:00 private cars follow odd/even plates, Lingyin and Nanshan Road also need a West Lake Pass booked the day before, and taxis and ride-hailing cars use fixed transfer points. Shuttle buses run from 12 metro stations.

## Why go

West Lake (西湖) is Hangzhou’s UNESCO-listed lake, ringed by hills on three sides and the city on the fourth. There is no gate: the lakeshore parks, the causeways and Broken Bridge (断桥) are open day and night and free. Most of a visit is walking, looking and choosing one or two things worth paying for, such as a boat to Three Pools Mirroring the Moon (三潭印月). Leifeng Pagoda, Lingyin Temple and Yue Fei Temple are separate places with their own tickets.

## What to do

- **Walk Bai Causeway to Broken Bridge.** Broken Bridge (断桥) stands at the east end of Bai Causeway (白堤). The arch itself is plain. The draw is the lake and hill view, and the White Snake legend tied to the bridge.
- **Cross the lake on Su Causeway.** Su Causeway (苏堤) was built from dredged lake mud and runs nearly three kilometres from Nanping Hill to the Qixia ridge. Walk part of it under the willows, and stop on the arched bridges to look both ways across the water.
- **Boat to Three Pools Mirroring the Moon.** The islet of Xiaoyingzhou (小瀛洲) can only be reached by boat, and the boat fare includes the island entrance. Its three stone pagodas stand in the water south of the island.
- **Hire a hand-rowed boat by the hour.** A covered, hand-rowed boat is the quietest way onto the water. Boats are priced per boat per hour, and two to six people share one easily.
- **Stay for the fountain at 19:30.** A free musical fountain plays once each evening on the Hubin lakefront, with the city lights behind it.

- Don't miss: Pick your starting point. Metro Line 1 to Longxiangqiao Station (龙翔桥站, exit C) puts you on the Hubin lakefront; Broken Bridge is a further walk north.

- Best time: Early morning, late afternoon, or a weekday
- Skip if: You have only an hour or two and want a single viewpoint. Pick one shore and one causeway instead of the whole lake.

## Practical details

- **Hours:** Open day and night · shoreline parks are free
  - These hours cover the lakeshore parks, causeways and bridges. Boats, the Three Pools island, Leifeng Pagoda and other sights keep their own hours.
  - In severe weather the management committee can close parks and put the causeways under temporary control.
- **Admission:** Free lakeshore · boats and island are extra
  - Island boat, leisure boat (includes Three Pools island entrance): ¥55 — Per person; children 1.2–1.5 m half price, under 1.2 m free with an adult
  - Island boat, painted or new-energy boat (includes Three Pools island entrance): ¥70 — Per person; children 1.2–1.5 m half price
  - Hand-rowed boat: ¥150 — Per boat per hour, one-hour minimum, about six seats. Landing on Three Pools island costs the island entrance extra (¥20 on the Bendibao fare list), and island time counts toward the rental time.
  - Round-lake shuttle boat, full route: ¥70 — Per person; single sections cost ¥6 or ¥8
  - Self-driving boat from the Broken Bridge pier: ¥30 — Per boat per half hour, 4 or 6 seats
  - Leifeng Pagoda, Lingyin and other sights around the lake sell their own tickets or reservations.
  - The city tourism bureau’s English page (2023) also lists a separate Foreign Affairs cruise that circles the lake without landing on the island, at ¥50 per person. The Bendibao boat guide (2026) gives the boat company’s fares for the island, round-lake and rowing boats.
- **Booking:** No booking for the lakeshore
  - Pier ticket windows and QR scan codes (码头售票处／扫码购票)
  - Passport accepted: not_applicable — No ticket or ID check applies to walking the lakeshore; passport handling at boat windows was not documented.
  - Boat tickets are bought at pier windows or by scanning the pier’s code. Island-boat windows sell from 08:00 to 16:30 in autumn, and from 08:00 to 16:00 from mid-November.
  - Lingyin Feilai Peak, next to the lake, needs a real-name reservation at least one day ahead; there is no same-day booking.
- **Last admission:** No last entry for the lakeshore
- **Time to allow:** 3–5 hr for one shore; a day for more
- **Getting there:** Metro Line 1 · Longxiangqiao exit C
  - Metro Line 1 to Longxiangqiao (龙翔桥), Exit C, about 5 min walk
  - Show a taxi driver: 上城区湖滨路 湖滨公园（西湖东岸）
  - Fengqi Road Station is the shuttle start for Broken Bridge. Wushan Square and Longxiangqiao serve the south shore and Leifeng Pagoda.
- **Foreign visitors:** No ID or ticket needed on the lakeshore

## Traveler tips

- **Choose one shore, not the whole lake.** West Lake (西湖) has no gate and no ticket line, so start by picking a shore. Hubin (湖滨) on the city side is the easy start. Broken Bridge (断桥) and Bai Causeway (白堤) lie to the north-east, and Su Causeway (苏堤) crosses the lake from the foot of Nanping Hill to the Qixia ridge on the west, nearly three kilometres long. Link two or three of these rather than trying to cover the whole shore. _Caveat: Donovan_l (May 2026) suggests at least one full day for West Lake alone; half a day on one side suits most first visits._ [source](https://au.trip.com/moments/detail/hangzhou-14-146104695/)
- **Metro Line 1 to Longxiangqiao, exit C, for the Hubin lakefront.** Ride Metro Line 1 to Longxiangqiao Station (龙翔桥站) and leave by exit C, which opens towards Dongpo Road and Pinghai Road and the Hubin lakefront with the musical fountain. For Broken Bridge on the north side, the city’s autumn shuttle plan sends rail arrivals to Fengqi Road Station (凤起路站). For the south-east shore and Nanshan Road, use Ding’an Road Station (定安路站). _Caveat: Exit C is named in the metro operator’s own notice of 4 October 2026 and by gotravelling (Oct 2026). The operator can change which exits are open on crowded days._ [source](https://sg.trip.com/moments/detail/hangzhou-14-153950771/)
- **On packed holidays, exit C can be exit-only.** When Longxiangqiao Station gets too busy, the metro operator restricts its entrances. On the first day of a long holiday exit C was made exit-only, then exits B and C together, with riders sent to exits A and D towards Yan’an Road and Xueshi Road. If you are leaving the lakefront at peak times, walk on to Ding’an Road or Fengqi Road station, or be ready to queue at A or D. _Caveat: The notices were issued during the first days of the 2026 National Day holiday (1 to 4 October). The operator decides on the day. 欧尼日记 (24 Aug 2025) also describes exit C as often exit-only after the fountain show._ [source](https://feng.ifeng.com/c/8wsCGasivVM)
- **The island boat fare includes the Three Pools island ticket.** Three Pools Mirroring the Moon (三潭印月) sits on the islet of Xiaoyingzhou (小瀛洲) and can only be reached by boat. The ¥55 leisure boat or ¥70 painted or new-energy boat fare includes the ¥20 island entrance and the trip back, with no time limit on the island. Board at a pier around Hubin, Zhongshan Park, Yue Fei Temple or Huagang, and choose your return pier by what you want to see next: Hubin, the Hangzhou Hotel pier near Yue Fei Temple, Huagang near Leifeng Pagoda, or Zhongshan Park. A hand-rowed boat works differently: landing on the island costs the island entrance on top of the hourly rental. _Caveat: Fares come from the Bendibao boat guide (2026) and the city tourism bureau’s English page (2023). Prices are posted at each pier._ [source](http://hz.bendibao.com/tour/2025917/ly166614.shtm)
- **Island-boat tickets stop selling at 16:30 in autumn.** From September to mid-November the island-boat ticket windows open at 08:00 and sell until 16:30; from mid-November to mid-February the cut-off is 16:00. Plan the Three Pools trip for the morning or early afternoon, not the evening. Hand-rowed boats keep longer hours, roughly 06:30 to 18:30, and stop taking new orders around 17:40. _Caveat: Weather can change sailing at short notice._ [source](http://hz.bendibao.com/tour/2025917/ly166614.shtm)
- **Hand-rowed boats are priced per boat, per hour; piers at Majiawan and the Hangzhou Hotel.** A hand-rowed boat (手划船) seats about six and costs ¥150 per boat per hour, with a one-hour minimum and half-hour steps after that, so two travellers can share one with another party. Going ashore on Three Pools island from a hand-rowed boat costs the island entrance extra, and time on the island counts toward the rental. Pay by scanning the QR code on the boat once you are seated. Majiawan Pier (马家湾码头) sits near the southern end of Su Causeway. At Majiawan Pier (马家湾码头) a hand-rowed boat is ¥150 per hour and seats up to six, while a yaolu rowing boat is ¥180 per hour and seats eight to ten. The two-hour Turtle Pond route runs from the outer lake into the inner lake, through Turtle Pond (乌龟潭) and Yuhuwan, and back via Huagang Guanyu. Boats leave 07:00 to 15:00, and the Turtle Pond route is not offered after 15:00; arrive before 09:00 to avoid the queue. The Hangzhou Hotel pier (杭州饭店码头) is quieter on a hot day, with more boats than people, and you can share a boat with strangers at the pier. _Caveat: Jennifer boarded at Majiawan Pier, took the two-hour route for ¥300 and shared the boat with another couple. The wait was about 45 minutes in line on a June day, and the blog carries affiliate links. Hand-rowed boat docks do not all follow the same route. Two Xiaohongshu guides (陈小兆, Jul 2026; 早起的漫游指南, Jul 2025) give the same ¥150 per hand-rowed boat per hour, and ¥180 per hour for a yaolu boat that seats eight to ten. 陈小兆 (17 Jul 2026) also notes there is no shop on the route; bring water and snacks. Many commenters were looking for strangers to share a boat for the National Day days, so queues were long that week. 早起的漫游指南 (3 Jul 2025) went in a 36 °C July week and says the route does not pass Three Pools; National Day crowds there are not covered._ (2 travelers) [source](http://hz.bendibao.com/tour/2025917/ly166614.shtm)
- **The free musical fountain plays once a night at 19:30: arrive early, and leave by Fengqi Road or Ding’an Road.** The West Lake musical fountain plays one show every evening at 19:30, about 15 minutes with four songs, on the water by Hubin Park No. 3 (湖滨三公园) on Hubin Road. It is free to watch. When crowd control is in force, the core viewing area is entered through a security check at two entrances on Hubin Road, so arrive before the start. The viewing area behind the security check, directly in front of the fountain, fills first. Arrive about 30 minutes ahead to watch, an hour ahead on a normal day for photos, and two to four hours ahead on a holiday. If the front rows are full, the two sides outside the fence give a clearer side view, and the area behind the fence is a fallback for latecomers. When the show ends, Longxiangqiao station is packed and exit C is often exit-only, while exit D can need a 30-minute queue; walk to Fengqi Road or Ding’an Road station instead. _Caveat: The city’s English report on the 2024 season notes the fountain stopped for several days in late February because of weather. Show times follow the city’s seasonal lighting plan. Xiaohongshu posts from 2025-10 to 2026-01 (小徐领杭员, 李小镭, zizi) and two Reddit commenters agree on 19:30 and a show of about 15 minutes; 小徐领杭员 lists the winter plan from 9 Oct 2025 to 14 Apr 2026 with the lake fountain still at 19:30. The one-to-four-hour estimate is 欧尼日记’s (24 Aug 2025). 约不到模特的摄影师 (26 Oct 2025) says the viewing area starts forming at 17:00 and advises entering by 18:30; 李小镭 (27 Sep 2025) says early arrivals get seats. The show is cancelled in thunderstorms, heavy rain and typhoons. 欧尼日记 (24 Aug 2025) gives the exit-D queue and the bus stops; 人间西湖 (30 Apr 2025) also advises avoiding Longxiangqiao and leaving by Fengqi Road or Ding’an Road on a holiday weekend._ (7 travelers) [source](https://en.hangzhou.com.cn/News/content/2026-04/21/content_9242161.html)
- **Broken Bridge is the pinch point: go early or at dusk.** Broken Bridge (断桥) is a short stone arch at the east end of Bai Causeway, and it is where the lake’s crowds bunch up. The city’s own traffic notice gives these numbers: 100,000 to 200,000 visitors on a weekday, 200,000 to 400,000 on a weekend day, and a single-day peak of 937,000 on May Day 2024. Weekdays are the easiest days for causeways, piers and the metro. _Caveat: June_inChina reached the bridge at 07:00 during the Spring Festival and found very few people; elwenion2 advises being at West Lake before 10:00, and Donovan_l recommends early morning for fewer people and mist over the water. These authors give different best hours and none measured crowds, so a normal weekday may differ from a Spring Festival visit. On holiday days Xiaohongshu authors found Broken Bridge packed: 十八旅行记 (Spring Festival 17 Feb 2026, 16:00), 心如止水 (4 Apr 2026, with queues for food, toilets, cars and boats), 建平村男孩 (4 Apr 2025), 人间西湖 (30 Apr 2025). 月亮不睡我睡 (6 Oct 2026) found the bridge still crowded but the rest of the lake looser. The figures are from 2023 and 2024 as quoted in the policy explanation, not a 2026 count._ (8 travelers) [source](https://au.trip.com/moments/detail/hangzhou-14-146104695/)
- **Autumn weekends and holidays: plates, passes, drop-offs and shuttles.** From September to November, on weekends and public holidays from 08:00 to 17:00, private cars entering the West Lake area follow odd/even plate rules. Lingyin and Nanshan Road also need a West Lake Pass (西湖通) requested through Alipay the day before, once per car per month. Taxis and ride-hailing cars are not bound by odd/even but use fixed drop-off points: the Xixi Road No. 608 car park or Xiaoyawu bus stop for Lingyin, and the Litaizuwan No. 157 car park for Nanshan Road. From September to November, 12 metro stations around West Lake run shuttle buses to Broken Bridge, Leifeng Pagoda, Su Causeway, Lingyin and Manjuelong (满觉陇). From Hangzhou East Railway Station, take Line 1 to Fengqi Road for Broken Bridge or to Longxiangqiao for Leifeng Pagoda; for Lingyin, take Line 1 to West Lake Cultural Square, Line 3 to Huanglong Sports Centre, then a shuttle. _Caveat: The seasonal rules repeat each year; confirm the current notice if you plan to drive. The metro and shuttle buses avoid them entirely. Routes are published as a map by the bus operator and can change; follow the shuttle signs at the station._ [source](https://www.hzzx.gov.cn/cshz/content/2026-09/08/content_9301630.htm)
- **Have Alipay or WeChat Pay ready for boats.** Boat piers sell tickets at windows, and hand-rowed boats take payment by QR code once you are seated. One traveller paid for a hand-rowed boat with Alipay, so have Alipay or WeChat Pay set up before you go. _Caveat: Jennifer paid for the hand-rowed boat with the Alipay app used throughout China, and the blog carries affiliate links. No source says whether pier ticket windows accept foreign bank cards._ [source](https://www.adoptinglifesjourney.com/travel-1/west-lake-hangzhou-boat-ride)
- **Boats stop in storms, and causeways can be closed.** The lake’s boats follow instructions from the West Lake Water Management Office, and in bad weather the circle-lake service stops sailing. When a typhoon hit in August 2026, the management committee brought every boat back to shore and put Bai and Su causeways under temporary control. Check the weather on the day you plan a boat trip. _Caveat: The typhoon closure was a one-off event; ordinary rain does not normally close the shoreline._ [source](http://hz.bendibao.com/tour/2025917/ly166614.shtm)
- **For fewer crowds, use the west side.** The stretch from Maojiabu (茅家埠) past Guozhuang (郭庄) to Yanggong Causeway (杨公堤) suits a quieter half-day. A hand-rowed boat from Maojiabu, or a cycle along Yanggong Causeway, avoids the queue at Broken Bridge. Su Causeway, nearly three kilometres of willows, joins the south and north shores. A Meituan shared bike is a cheap way to ride the causeways in the morning. _Caveat: June_inChina found the West Inner Lake side quieter than the main shore. Two Trip.com posts promote Maojiabu and Yanggong Causeway. A visitor rode a Meituan shared bike for under one euro a week, and another biked to watch the sunrise at 07:00 and saw groups of cyclists there almost every day. None of the authors timed the walk; the two Reddit reports come from a winter and a summer trip._ (3 travelers) [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/travelchina/comments/1rce67l/my_7day_shanghai_hangzhou_trip_during_chinese_new/)
- **Watch the Leifeng Pagoda sunset from Changqiao Park.** Start at Longxiangqiao in the afternoon and walk south along Nanshan Road (南山路) through Orioles Singing in the Willows (柳浪闻莺) to Changqiao Park (长桥公园). This open spot gives a clear view of Leifeng Pagoda at sunset with far fewer visitors than Broken Bridge. _Caveat: gotravelling recommends this route. Sunset moves earlier through the autumn, and Leifeng Pagoda closes earlier from November._ [source](https://sg.trip.com/moments/detail/hangzhou-14-153950771/)
- **Only a few things around the lake need tickets.** The lakeshore parks, causeways and bridges are free and open day and night, and nobody checks tickets. Boats, the Three Pools island and Leifeng Pagoda charge separately, and Lingyin (灵隐) needs a real-name reservation made at least one day ahead in its own mini-program. Buy boat tickets at the official piers, where fares are posted, rather than from touts. _Caveat: The official piers post fares; the ticket prices above come from the 2026 boat guide._ [source](https://www.hzzx.gov.cn/content/2023-11/29/content_8651033.htm)
- **The public water bus has ten stops, and short hops cost a few yuan.** West Lake has a public ride-on, ride-off boat (公交游船) with ten piers around the lake. One rider boarded at the pier beside Guo’s Villa, by the China-US Friendship Well (中美友谊井) about 20 m away, and paid ¥6 to Maojiabu or ¥14 to Huagang Guanyu; the full ring of ten stops is ¥70. Boats leave every 30 minutes from 08:30 to 15:30, you queue on the spot, and staff talk about the history of each stretch. _Caveat: Taletelling (17 Jun 2026) is a video guide by one traveller. A reply in the comments says the starting pier at Yuehu is quieter, and the fares and timetable are posted at each pier._ [source](https://www.xiaohongshu.com/explore/6a3275ac000000001c0277d9)
- **A low-effort half day: boat, Three Pools, the pagoda, then a cart.** One family with older parents walked from a hotel near Longxiangqiao to the Second Park pier (二公园码头), took the ¥70 boat to Three Pools Mirroring the Moon and on to Huagang Guanyu, walked about 15 minutes to Leifeng Pagoda and rode the lift up, then took the ¥40 sightseeing cart from the pagoda gate to Broken Bridge, about half an hour. _Caveat: 哈喽呀温蒂 (9 Feb 2026) travelled this route with older parents in winter. The sightseeing carts only run clockwise, so this order cannot be reversed. The island and pagoda tickets are paid on the spot. The ¥60 boat and ¥20 pagoda fares for travellers aged 60 and over are quoted without saying whether foreign passports qualify; concessions may be limited to Chinese citizens._ [source](https://www.xiaohongshu.com/explore/69893ee8000000001d010d93)
- **Start from Wushan Square exit C for the quiet southern shore.** Leave Wushan Square metro station by exit C and walk about 600 m to Liulang Wenying, a part of the lake that stays quiet all year. From the Qianwang Shrine pier, a boat to Three Pools takes about 15 minutes and costs ¥55 including the island ticket, with no booking. Continue by boat to Huagang Guanyu, then take the outer-ring bus or a sightseeing cart from the Leifeng Pagoda area to Xileng Bridge. _Caveat: 江南君 (17 Mar 2025) gives Jingci Temple at ¥10 against ¥40 for Leifeng Pagoda; fares and the quiet claim for Liulang Wenying come from one spring weekday trip._ [source](https://www.xiaohongshu.com/explore/67d7e279000000000d017699)
- **Pier touts quote 150 RMB per person; official boats cost a fraction.** A Hangzhou guide who sells tours says men whispering near the tourist piers ask 150 RMB per person for a boat ride, while official public ferries cost roughly 60–90 RMB depending on the route and the public shuttle boat is cheaper still. Buy at the ticket booth, not from people on the pavement. _Caveat: The author is a Hangzhou guide who sells tours and advertises paid guiding and vans in the same post, so the prices are an interested guide’s figures._ [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/travelchina/comments/1qgbdzg/a_local_guides_advice_on_avoiding_the_3_biggest/)
