Why go
West Bund Museum (西岸美术馆) is where Shanghai shows works lent by the Centre Pompidou in Paris, under a multi-year partnership. If you want Western modern art from Impressionism to new media in one compact visit, this is the place, and it sits on the Xuhui riverside promenade.
What to do
- Explore the Pompidou exhibitions. See the rotating Centre Pompidou collection exhibitions in the main halls. Check the current theme and ticket before choosing a date.
- Look for digital art. Look for temporary shows of digital and contemporary art in Hall 3 on F2; the programme changes with the exhibition calendar.
- Walk round the building. David Chipperfield designed three gallery volumes in a pinwheel around a central lobby, clad in translucent recycled glass that changes with the river light. Enter from the riverside and leave by Longteng Avenue to see both faces.
- Join a free gallery tour. Free public tours run for ticket holders. Book a slot in the museum's WeChat account or mini-program and meet at the 1F reception.
- Don't miss: The riverside entrance: the museum has two doors, one on the Huangpu promenade and one on Longteng Avenue.
- Don't miss: Free public gallery tours require booking and a same-day exhibition ticket; meet at 1F reception five minutes early.
- Best time: Weekday afternoon, then the riverside
- Skip if: Skip it if you only want Chinese art; the core shows are Western modern art from the Pompidou.

Traveler tips
- Pick the riverside door. West Bund Museum has two entrances: one on the Huangpu riverside promenade and one on Longteng Avenue (龙腾大道). From Metro Line 11 Yunjin Road station (云锦路) the museum lists about a 10-minute walk. If you are coming along the river from Long Museum or the West Bund promenade, use the riverside entrance. source
- Buy at the 1F desk for concessions. Tickets are sold at the first-floor service desk or online in the West Bund Museum WeChat official account. Students get 50% off with a valid student ID. Visitors aged 70 or over, people with disabilities and military personnel collect free tickets at the front desk with ID, and one child under 1.3 m enters free with each adult. source
- Last weeks of the Pompidou landscapes. 'Reinventing Landscape: Highlights of the Centre Pompidou Collection IV' (重塑景观) in Halls 1 and 2 closes on 18 October 2026. Expect about 70 works in seven sections, from early-20th-century painting to installation, film and new media. source
- Retro arcade games in Computer Worlds. 'Computer Worlds' (计算万千世界) opened on 24 September 2026 in Hall 3 on F2 and runs to 14 February 2027. Its games section has about 30 original vintage arcade machines and nearly 100 classic games, which makes it the better pick if you visit with teenagers. source
- Book the free guided tour. Free public tours are booked in the West Bund Museum WeChat official account or mini-program, and you also need an exhibition ticket for the same day. Meet at the 1F reception 5 minutes early; anyone more than 10 minutes late is turned away. Each tour takes up to 25 people and may be cancelled if fewer than 3 book, so leave at least 30 minutes afterwards to look around on your own. Caveat: Tour language is not stated; ask when booking. source
- Ordinary Mondays shut everything. The museum opens Tuesday to Sunday 11:00–18:00, last entry 17:00. On ordinary Mondays (except statutory holidays) it closes completely, including the public areas, restaurant, café and bookshop, so do not plan a Monday coffee stop here. It does open on statutory holidays. source
- Lockers, café and power banks inside. The museum lists a restaurant and café, lockers, an audio guide, power-bank rental and accessibility facilities. Leave bags in a locker before the galleries. Groups of 20 or more get 20% off tickets; email zyh@wbmshanghai.com to book. source
- Walk the river to Long Museum. Long Museum West Bund (龙美术馆西岸馆) is about 1.8 km north along the riverside promenade, roughly 23 minutes on foot. Do West Bund Museum first (it opens at 11:00), then walk north to Long Museum. Caveat: Walking time is an editorial estimate from the OpenStreetMap route. Long Museum has seasonal late hours on regular Fridays to Sundays; its published timetable excludes public holidays, so check the holiday closing time separately. source
