Why go

Wenshu Monastery (文殊院) is a working Buddhist monastery in central Chengdu with six main halls on one axis, a temple tea house and a vegetarian restaurant. Entry and incense are free. It fits a relaxed one- or two-hour stop between busier sights.

What to do

• Walk the six halls on the central axis. The monastery covers about 90 mu with six main halls stepping back along one axis. The temple calls its carved window lattices the finest among Chinese temples.
• Light the free incense. The temple hands out free incense. Burn it only at the designated points.
• See the relic pagodas. The temple enshrines pagodas holding a Buddha relic and the Xuanzang skull relic. The relic itself is opened to the public only on announced days.
• Have tea or a vegetarian lunch at Xiang Yuan. Xiang Yuan (香园) is the temple's tea house and vegetarian restaurant in a bamboo courtyard.
• Browse Wenshufang outside the gate. Wenshufang (文殊坊) is the lane area of shops and restaurants beside the temple. It is not part of the monastery.

• Don't miss: Dress plainly and carry no meat food or incense into the temple. Flammable items are also banned inside the grounds.

• Best time: Morning, outside festival days
• Skip if: Skip if you want ticketed museum displays or a view of the relic on an ordinary day.

Traveler tips

• Entry is free all year and so is the incense. Wenshu Monastery (文殊院) charges no admission and gives out free incense inside, so there is no need to buy incense from sellers outside the gate. No reservation is needed for entry. Caveat: The temple's own introduction says tickets are waived all year and incense is free; the "no reservation" line is from the Spring Festival 2024 notice. Posts by momo (Jan 2026) and stephyagnes (Sep 2025) also say entry is free with no reservation. One guide (南京小灰灰, Nov 2025) writes that visitors scan an ID on entry; no other post or temple notice mentions an ID check, so plan to walk in. (2 travelers) source
• Offer incense the temple’s way. Burn only the free incense at the designated points. The temple asks visitors not to bring tall incense, large candles, spirit money or their own incense and fireworks. Bags are checked at security on busy days. Caveat: The wording is from the temple’s Spring Festival notices (2024 and 2026); the bag check was announced for Lunar New Year’s Eve and the first day. Visitor posts (Jun 2025 to Jan 2026) agree the incense is free and outside incense is not wanted, but differ on where it is handed out (just inside the entrance on the right per stephyagnes; beside the Heavenly Kings Hall per momo) and on how many sticks (one per momo, three per 南京小灰灰). • Dress plainly and leave meat and incense outside. Wear plain, modest clothes: no short skirts, shorts, slippers or revealing clothing. Do not bring meat food or incense into the temple. Caveat: The instruction comes from the temple’s May 2026 notice about opening the relic; the temple posts it as its dress rule for entering halls. source
• Lunar New Year’s Eve and first day are one-way and queue for hours. On the evening of Lunar New Year's Eve and on the first day, the main gate and small gate are entry-only, the side and north gates exit-only, and the route inside is one-way. Peak waits of two to three hours were announced for 21:00–24:00 on the Eve and 10:00–14:00 on day one. Caveat: Details are from the temple’s notice for the 2026 festival (Lunar New Year’s Eve fell on 16 February); the small gate does not lead to the Guanyin Hall, and the schedule changes each year. source
• The relic is shown only on special days. Around Buddha's Birthday, the temple has opened its Buddha relic in the Sutra Library to the public free of charge. Its pagodas also hold the Xuanzang skull relic. There is no announced display on ordinary days, so check the temple's notices. Caveat: In 2026 the viewing ran for three days, 24–26 May, 09:00–16:30, free; the temple has not said the relic is displayed on ordinary days, and future dates are announced each year. source
• Use Metro Line 1, Exit K. Take Metro Line 1 to Wenshu Monastery station and leave by Exit K. The temple is about 400 m from the exit, roughly a five to ten minute walk. Caveat: Exit K and the 400 m figure come from the Amap place listing; Junpei (Dec 2025) calls it about a ten-minute walk. The station has six exits (B, C, E, G, H, K) and some guides name other exits. Visitor posts also give Exit K: momo (Jan 2026) says about five minutes to the main gate (山门) and 思想吖 (Aug 2025) says about 500 m. 吞吞turn (Jun 2025) names Exit B and the address as 文殊院街15号, which matches neither the Amap listing nor other posts. • Lunch at Xiang Yuan, the temple’s vegetarian restaurant. Xiang Yuan (香园), the temple's vegetarian restaurant and tea house in a bamboo courtyard, serves a lunch buffet cooked without garlic or scallions. Returning an empty plate earns a small refund. Caveat: The ¥35 buffet and ¥5 plate refund come from Chill Crisp (Jan 2024); 烧烤摊主の朋友 (Aug 2026) mentions an ¥18 set vegetarian meal. Prices are not confirmed by the temple. A Reddit commenter who says they are a local (ScreenWide7111, Mar 2026) also recommends the temple's vegetarian lunch as very cheap. 思想吖 (Aug 2025) repeats the ¥35 buffet and ¥5 refund; 长生不老鹿 (Jun 2026) lists the ¥35 buffet, a ¥19 small spicy-soup bowl and a ¥50 vegetarian hot pot. 糯米小糍粑 (a promotional post, Jul 2026) writes that the monastery itself serves no vegetarian meal at present and sends visitors to Xiang Yuan next door; posts differ on whether the courtyard sits inside the grounds or to the right of the main gate. • Copy a sutra over tea. Sutra copying is in the Fuhui Hall (福慧厅) of the Xiang Yuan courtyard, open from 10:00 to 22:00. You pay for tea rather than for the copying; one post gives a minimum of ¥48 a person including tea. Plan at least two hours, and you can take your copy away. Caveat: Prices differ by post: 思想吖 (Aug 2025) gives a ¥48-a-person minimum with tea, stephyagnes (Sep 2025) a tea-seat fee of ¥30–80, and 烧烤摊主の朋友 (Aug 2026, a commercial account) says copying is free with a drink. 长生不老鹿 (Jun 2026) says the copying area is quiet but dearer than the open-air tea garden; Qiao瞧 (May 2026) copied a sutra in the tea room and met foreign visitors doing the same. • Wenshufang, the lane outside, is separate from the temple. Wenshufang (文殊坊) is the lively lane area of restaurants, teahouses and souvenir shops outside the temple; its entrance map is easy to mistake for the monastery. Visitors suggest the neighbourhood for noodles, cold jelly, baked flatbread and traditional peach-cake pastries after the visit. Caveat: Junpei (Dec 2025) found the map at the lane entrance; 烧烤摊主の朋友 (Aug 2026) lists shops nearby. The shops are separate businesses. momo (Jan 2026) puts the jelly-and-noodle shop 洞子口张老二凉粉 opposite the temple and recommends the old-style pastry shop 宫廷糕点铺; 南京小灰灰 (Nov 2025) quotes ¥10 for sweet-water noodles with jelly and ¥15 for a bag of pastries. • Come at opening or just before closing. Even outside festivals the temple draws many visitors, so arrive when the gate opens at 8:00 if you want quiet courtyards. A weekday in the last hour or two before closing is also calmer. Weekends and holidays are the busiest. Caveat: Junpei (Dec 2025) found plenty of visitors but did not mind. Qiao瞧 (May 2026) says there is no off-season and the quiet window is a weekday near the 17:00 closing; 南京小灰灰 (Nov 2025) suggests before 9:00 or after 15:00; stephyagnes (Sep 2025) advises avoiding weekends and holidays. • Walk past touts outside the gate. Fortune-tellers, incense sellers and people offering paid guiding approach visitors at the gate and in the lane outside. Free incense is handed out inside, so there is nothing to buy from them; a polite no and keep walking is enough. Look closely at bracelets and souvenirs sold in the Wenshufang lane before you pay. Caveat: Three authors (Sep 2025 to Jan 2026) give the same warning about fortune-tellers and incense sellers; a promotional post (Jul 2026) adds paid guides and the Wenshufang bracelets. • Red wall photos beside the gate; ginkgo gold in late autumn. The red wall with the gold characters 世界和平 人类幸福 (World Peace, Human Happiness) stands outside, to the left of the main gate as you face it. It is a popular photo spot, and queues of half an hour or more build up in the afternoon, so go when the gate opens at 8:00 or late in the day. In late autumn the ginkgo leaves turn gold from mid November to early December, a classic match with the red walls. Caveat: momo (Jan 2026) gives the left side, a wait of 30 minutes or more and the 8:00 or after-16:00 advice; 南京小灰灰 (Nov 2025) says before 9:00 or after 15:00 is quieter. 旅行兔兔 (Apr 2026, a post that also promotes restaurants) gives the same times. A commenter asked whether the wall is inside or outside the grounds; the posts put it at the gate. Ginkgo timing: momo says late November to early December, 南京小灰灰 says mid to late November; it varies with the weather and the temple publishes no leaf dates. (2 travelers) source
• Find the ¥18 mushroom rice at Xiang Yuan. The mushroom rice (菇菇饭) at Xiang Yuan (香园) is a one-bowl vegetarian meal at about ¥18. It is served from 11:30, and the counter is hard to find. Follow the standing signs with arrows once you are in the courtyard, order at 11:30 and collect around 12:00, as it can run out. Caveat: Price: 思想吖 (Aug 2025), momo (Jan 2026) and 长生不老鹿 (Jun 2026) all give ¥18. The 11:30 order and 12:00 pickup are from 脆脆鲨鱼大王 (Oct 2024), who also says it can sell out; momo (Jan 2026) confirms 11:30 and the arrow signs. The bowl is reportedly not made on Mondays, from 思想吖 and 脆脆鲨鱼大王 (who says Monday 'seems' to be off). One commenter (Nov 2025) found the dish bland and small. • Free English talks by volunteers. Volunteers give free English explanations of the temple's Zen culture to foreign visitors. A timetable of the talks is posted just inside the gate on the left, so look there when you arrive. Caveat: One video post by 君子造极 (28 Sep 2026) describes volunteers (named 菩提花语) giving free English explanations. It does not give days or times and the temple has not announced the service, so the board may show no talk on the day you visit. source
• Follow the central axis from the Mountain Gate to the small gate. Enter by the Mountain Gate (山门), then follow the central axis: Heavenly Kings Hall, Three Great Sages Hall, Main Hall, Dharma Hall, Sutra Library, Jade Buddha Hall and the Thousand Buddha Pagoda, leaving by the small gate (小山门). Allow one to two hours. Caveat: Hall order and the 1-2 hour estimate are from momo (Jan 2026). 旅行兔兔 (Apr 2026) and 摄影师小小夏 (Nov 2025) give a similar order with fewer halls, but both posts carry promotions. Hall names in English are translations of the signs; the festival notice says the small gate does not lead to the Guanyin Hall. source
• No photos of the Buddha statues or the relic. Visitors advise against photographing the Buddha statues inside the halls, and against taking pictures of the Buddha relic and the Xuanzang statue. Keep your phone on silent and photograph the red walls, courtyards and trees instead. Caveat: stephyagnes (Sep 2025) writes not to photograph the relic and Xuanzang statue and not to take pictures in front of Buddha images; 南京小灰灰 (Nov 2025) writes not to photograph Buddha images.
