Why go
Come here to see the whole city at once. The hall on People's Square explains how Shanghai is planned, from the old concessions and the Huangpu waterfront to the new towns and Chongming island, and its centrepiece is a walk-in 5D digital city sandbox. Entry is free but needs a timed online booking.
What to do
- Enter the digital city sandbox. On 3F, the 5D digital city sandbox (5D数字化沉浸式城市沙盘) uses a two-storey projection space to show Shanghai from above and at street level. Follow its city tours instead of looking for the former physical scale model.
- Stand in the 5D city sandbox. The '5D digital immersive city sandbox' (5D数字化沉浸式城市沙盘) projects the city around you; it is on every one of the museum's recommended routes, even the 30-minute one.
- Walk the three city themes. The current displays, opened in August 2022, are organised as a 'Humanistic City', an 'Innovative City' and an 'Ecological City', covering heritage streets, the 15-minute neighbourhood, the five new towns and green space.
- Read the riverfront story. A section on the Huangpu River and Suzhou Creek covers the plan to turn both waterfronts into public riverside space, useful context before you walk the Bund or the North Bund.
- Don't miss: Pick up or scan one of the museum's 30-, 45-, 60- or 90-minute route maps at the entrance so you do not miss the digital city sandbox.
- Best time: Any day but Wednesday; morning slots
- Skip if: Skip it if you want history objects rather than plans; one 2026 reviewer felt most rooms were visions of the future rather than finished projects.

Traveler tips
- Book a free slot in WeChat. Entry is free. To make a named reservation, search WeChat for the mini-program 上海城市规划展示馆门票, tap 预约, choose a date and an entry slot, then add each visitor with their ID; the published rules accept passports. The published booking window reaches seven days ahead, including the visit day, with one booking per document per day. Caveat: The published rules describe a reservation for ordinary visits, while a hall-branded August 2025 post says weekend and holiday visitors could register on site. Neither its current validity nor the account's identity has been independently confirmed; do not assume walk-in access or that advance booking is always required. source
- Cancel by 15:30 if plans change. If you cannot use your slot, cancel it in the same mini-program before 15:30 on the visit day. Two no-shows without cancelling block the account from booking for 30 days, which matters if a travel companion books for your whole group. source
- Don't bring drinks in. Security does not let bottled or boxed drinks, alcohol or other liquids into the hall; only baby milk and liquid medicine are allowed. Finish your drink before the security check. Lighters, scooters and drones are also refused; strollers and wheelchairs are fine. source
- Rent the English audio guide. The visitor service centre rents Chinese and English audio-guide devices for ¥20 each, with a ¥100 deposit or an ID left as deposit. The hall also runs timed guided tours, with times posted at the 1F visitor service centre. Coats and large bags can be left at the B1 service centre or self-service lockers after the security check. source
- Exit 2 or 3 at People's Square. Take Metro Line 1, 2 or 8 to People's Square (人民广场) and leave by Exit 2 or 3. The hall is at 100 Renmin Avenue on the corner of Xizang Middle Road (西藏中路), a few minutes' walk. From Exit 2 an underground passage also leads to the B1 entrance. There is no parking at the hall. Caveat: Bendibao lists Exits 2 and 3, and three 2025 visitors independently describe the Exit 2 underground connection to B1. The hall confirms its address but not a metro exit; those visitor accounts do not confirm Exit 3 or whether the passage is currently open. (3 travelers) source
- Pick a 30- to 90-minute route. The hall publishes four routes. The 30-minute route covers 'Impressions of Shanghai', the history of the city's master plans and the 5D city sandbox; the 90-minute route adds old street patterns, the riverfront, the free-trade zone, the new towns, parks and Chongming. Scan the route QR code at the entrance and follow it. source
- No stiletto heels on the screens. The floor of the LED screen area and the 5D city sandbox cannot be walked on in thin high heels. If you wear them, bring flat shoes or view the sandbox from its edge. Flash, selfie sticks and tripods are not allowed anywhere in the hall. source
- Expect plans, not artefacts. A visitor from Pittsburgh in September 2026 found enough English signage to follow the topics but said most of it is about current and future plans. Another reviewer in April 2026 called it 'more like a policy statement'. Go if you like cities, models and maps; keep it short if you want old objects. Caveat: The English-signage experience comes from one September 2026 visitor; English audio devices are confirmed separately by the hall. (3 travelers) source
- City models on two floors. At Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center (上海城市规划展示馆), the 2F Humanistic City gallery holds a large central model of Shanghai. Go up to the 3F Innovation City gallery for the Digital City model, an immersive show about the wider city. Check the board at the 3F entrance for the next showing; the display does not run all the time. Caveat: The floor layout comes from 2025 visitor posts. A hall-branded August 2025 post directly describes scheduled demonstrations; it is an operator-style commercial source, and the current show times need checking on arrival. (3 travelers) source
- Ask staff if WeChat booking fails. Carry your original passport to Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall (上海城市规划展示馆). If the WeChat mini-program will not load, explain the problem to entrance staff and ask how to proceed that day. Caveat: One Japanese visitor was admitted after explaining a failed WeChat booking and showing a passport. This was an individual exception, not a standing walk-in policy. source
