Why go
Shanghai's large hands-on science museum reopened in February 2026 after a full renewal. Ten permanent halls let you touch and try things, from robot shows to flight simulators, and three theatres show films on LED dome and giant screens. It is aimed mainly at children and teenagers, so it works best as a family or rainy-day stop.
What to do
- Watch the robots in AI Pioneers. 'AI Pioneers' traces artificial intelligence through robots and factory, city and harbour scenes. A 2026 reviewer singled out the robots and AI hall as the best presented.
- Try the flight hall. 'Aviation Adventures' has flight principles, an aircraft workshop, simulators and a wind-tunnel zone; the 4D balance and parachute simulators have height limits and long queues.
- Walk through the rainforest. 'Rainforest Realm' rebuilds a tropical rainforest in four sections, from overview to people and the forest.
- Book a dome or giant-screen film. The Dome Theater has a 23-metre LED dome tilted at 30 degrees, and the Giant Screen Theater uses a CiNITY LED screen 23.7 m wide. Film tickets are separate from admission.
- Let small children play in One Meter World. On 1F, 'One Meter World' (一米世界) is a science 'city' for ages 3–8; each 70-minute session is booked after you enter.
- Don't miss: Short booked shows inside the halls, such as the 16-minute Relativity Theatre on 3F and 'Concert of Nature' on 2F.
- Best time: Weekday mornings; avoid rainy weekends
- Skip if: Skip it if you are an adult without children and want deep science content; several 2026 reviewers found it aimed at school groups.

- Book your date before you go. The confirmed route is a named online ticket for a date and time slot in the WeChat mini-program 上海科技馆自然博物馆天文馆门票 or the 上海科技馆 official account, up to 7 days before the visit, excluding the visit day. Children aged 6 or under or 1.3 m or shorter, and visitors aged 70 or over enter free but still need a booking. Caveat: The city listing gives the seven-day window but not the release clock time or same-day returned-ticket availability. Current on-site ticket sales are unconfirmed. source
- Book halls after you scan in. Before you visit Shanghai Science and Technology Museum (上海科技馆), add each visitor to the experience-booking profile as well as to the admission-ticket order. After your admission is scanned, open the official account → 来预约 → 展项预约 to see the day's available slots and release times. Book your priority experience first, then check for later openings and the current per-person limit on the booking page. Caveat: Visitors in April, May and October 2026 reported separate profiles and post-entry experience booking. A February 2026 Bendibao guide stated a limit of two items per person and four people per booking, while visitor accounts differ on release times and quantities; the current limits are unresolved. - One Meter World is for ages 3–8. One Meter World (一米世界) is a 1F play area for children aged 3–8, who must be with an adult. After admission, find its entrance and read the current access instructions before you commit to a route. Keep the separate experience-booking section ready in case the attraction uses timed slots that day. Caveat: A guide published 11 February 2026 described five 70-minute sessions, a 250-person cap, a 12:30 afternoon release, and bookings for both adults and children. A June 2026 visitor gave a 1.4 m minimum for the simulated parachute and described the 4D balance activity as needing two people. Decide whether to queue after you read each activity's sign. Caveat: A March 2026 parent separately reported a 1.4 m minimum for the 4D balance experience and estimated about two hours in the queue on that visit. Visit-ticket cancellations are free before 23:30 two days ahead; 10% applies from 00:30 the day before until 09:00 on the visit day, then 20% through 23:30 in the seven-day window including the visit day. - Enter through the sunken plaza gate. Take Metro Line 2 to Shanghai Science and Technology Museum station (上海科技馆站) and leave by Exit 7 or 8 for the museum side. Head for the sunken plaza and look for Gate 6 (六号门) instead of stopping at the first street-level doorway. Caveat: An October 2026 domestic visitor described Gate 6 and said an order code worked when they forgot their ID card; this does not establish any foreign-passport purchase or entry process.
