Why go
Shanghai Museum’s People’s Square building (人民广场馆) is a central venue for major special exhibitions, in a distinctive bronze-vessel-shaped building beside People’s Square. Check its current programme before choosing this branch; the museum’s Chinese bronzes, ceramics and paintings are at the East branch in Pudong.
What to do
- Check the current exhibition. This building’s galleries are used for major temporary shows. Check the exhibition title and ticket scope before visiting; the floor-by-floor route changes with the programme.
- Look at the building. Notice the round bronze-vessel roof and the stone animals outside before heading to the South Gate on Wusheng Road (武胜路).
- Enter from Wusheng Road. Use the South Gate on Wusheng Road (武胜路南门) for the People’s Square building, then follow the floor map for the show on your visit day.
- Don't miss: Check the floor map at the 1F service desk for the exhibition route on your visit day.
- Best time: First morning session
- Skip if: Skip this branch if you only want the museum’s Chinese permanent galleries; choose Shanghai Museum East instead.

Traveler tips
- Go to the right Shanghai Museum building. Shanghai Museum has two buildings. Until 14 Nov 2027 the People's Square building (人民广场馆, 201 Renmin Avenue) shows only the paid Americas exhibition. The Chinese bronzes, ceramics and paintings are at Shanghai Museum East (上海博物馆东馆), 1952 Century Avenue in Pudong, where general entry is free. Choose by what you want to see before you book. source
- Buy a timed ticket before you go. Each ticket is for one named person, one date and one session. In WeChat, search the mini-program 上海博物馆参观预约, choose 人民广场馆, then the exhibition. Visitors without a Chinese ID can buy on Trip.com, which the museum names for overseas visitors. Tickets for the next month go on sale at 12:00 on the 1st of each month. source
- Pick ¥148 or ¥135 by date. The full ¥148 ticket works on any open day. The ¥135 'designated-day' ticket only works on weekdays outside July–August, January–February 2027, weekends and national holidays, so it is not valid on national holidays. Visitors aged 60+, aged 7–18 and full-time students pay ¥74; children 6 and under enter free with an adult (two per adult). Full-price tickets cannot be moved to another date, and refunds on the visit day lose 20% of the price. Caveat: Eligibility of foreign student cards for the ¥74 ticket is not stated. The 20% same-day refund fee comes from one September 2026 post. source
- Enter at the Wusheng Road South Gate. Take Metro Line 1, 2 or 8 to People's Square (人民广场) and leave by Exit 1, or Line 14 to Dashijie (大世界) Exit 4. Individual ticket holders enter at the South Gate on Wusheng Road (武胜路南门), where the queue runs through the corn field. Staff check your ID and your booked session, so arrive within your slot rather than early. source
- Book 09:00 or a Friday/Saturday evening. Two visitors who went in summer 2026 recommend the first 09:00 session because the halls got noticeably more crowded after noon. In October and November 2026, the exhibition also stays open to 21:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, with last entry at 19:00. (2 travelers) source
- Follow the floors from 1F up. Start at the Olmec hall to the right of the South Gate entrance, then Maya and Teotihuacan on 1F, the Aztec hall on 2F, and the Peru 'Golden Empire' hall on 3F. Footprints and arrows on each floor mark the route. Get the free floor map at the 1F service desk first, and if 1F is packed at 09:00 go straight up to the near-empty 3F and work down. Caveat: One parent writes you will get lost without the floor map. (4 travelers) source
- Budget at least three hours. A casual walk-through can take about 2 hours; allow 2.5–3 hours for the highlights or 5–6 hours for a careful visit. A parent who visited in July 2026 did a 2-hour guided tour plus 2 hours alone and still did not finish. Leave about 40 minutes for the 3F Peru hall so you do not arrive there exhausted. source
- Eat on 1F, 2F or 4F. Food is only allowed in the catering areas, not in galleries or corridors. The museum restaurant inside the South Gate (11:00–14:00) has a Mexican and Peruvian corner; the 幼韵轩 tea room on 2F serves tea, coffee and snacks 09:00–16:30; 4F has chain drink shops, ice cream and seating. Leave coats and large bags at the cloakroom after the security check. source
- Get a wristband before stepping out. You can leave and come back on the same day, but only with a re-entry wristband. Collect it at the 1F information desk beside the roots of the big tree in the atrium, then use the green lane and pass security again on return. The 1F restaurant is outside the security gate, so you need the wristband to come back after lunch. Bottled water and snacks without strong smells are allowed in, and the galleries are strongly air-conditioned, so bring a light layer. Caveat: A July 2026 Trip.com visitor wrote that you cannot leave to eat; two later visitor posts and one commercial post say the wristband works. (3 travelers) source
- Rent an audio guide with your passport. Foreign-language audio guides cost ¥40 per set; the deposit is ¥400, US$50 or your passport. Each hall also has a Chinese–English timeline at its entrance. Visitors say the wall labels give names and dates but little background, so read or watch something about the Maya, Aztecs and Inca before you go. Caveat: Exhibition guides are rented separately, so ask at the desk whether the Americas exhibition device has English before paying. (2 travelers) source
- Buy VR as a combo ticket. The two VR experiences are offered as combos with the exhibition: 'Maya Adventure' (2F) ¥238, or ¥215 on designated days; 'Flying over Machu Picchu' (3F) ¥216, or ¥195. The listed combos are for visitors under 60 who are not using a concession ticket. Buy them in the museum mini-program under 人民广场馆 → 系列联票, and if you are short of time skip VR for the 3F Andean gold rooms. source
- Read the locker screen before paying. Coats and large bags can go to the staffed bag drop for free (large items on 1F, small on 2F). The self-service lockers are signed '90 minutes free', but a visitor in August 2026 using a medium locker for 30 minutes was still charged because the free period applied to another size. Check size and price on the QR screen before you scan, or use the staffed desk. Caveat: The locker charge comes from one August 2026 complaint post. (2 travelers) source
