## Notices in effect

- 2026-09-23 to 2027-01-18: Golden Crown of Silla special exhibition is listed for Shanghai Museum East 2F; ticket terms are exhibition-specific.
- 2026-07-09 to 2027-11-14: Americas exhibition is at the separate People’s Square branch and requires a ticket; do not go there for free East-branch galleries.

## Why go

If you want to see Chinese art across many centuries in one place, use the East branch (上海博物馆东馆) as your main museum stop. Its permanent galleries cover bronzes, sculpture, ceramics, jade, seals, calligraphy and painting. This is a different visit from the People's Square branch, whose exhibition and ticket arrangements are separate.

## What to do

- **Start with bronzes.** Go to the Chinese Ancient Bronze Gallery (中国古代青铜馆) on 1F to compare vessel shapes and decoration across periods. Pick a few objects to read closely; the collection is too large for a quick sweep.
- **Choose a second medium.** Use the current gallery map to choose ceramics (中国古代陶瓷馆), jade (中国古代玉器馆), or sculpture (中国古代雕塑馆). This makes a short visit more coherent than rushing through every floor.
- **Look for local stories.** Find the Shanghai archaeology and Jiangnan craft displays (考古上海、诗心造物——江南工艺的世界) to connect the ancient collection with the region you are visiting.
- **Use a guide.** At the museum, compare the free WeChat highlights guide with the English audio-guide rental. The official English page lists the permanent-gallery English device at ¥40 per set.

- Don't miss: The individual visitor entrance is the B1 East Gate by Dingxiang Road (丁香路), not the 1F North Gate for reserved groups.

- Best time: Allow a half day; Tue closed
- Skip if: Skip a full museum visit if you have less than two hours and do not want to choose just one or two galleries.

## Traveler tips

- **Use the B1 East Gate.** For a normal visit to Shanghai Museum East (上海博物馆东馆), travel to 1952 Century Avenue and follow signs toward the B1 East Gate near Dingxiang Road (丁香路). Bring your original valid identity document for the security check and ID scan. The 1F North Gate is the published entrance for reserved groups and priority-entry visitors. [source](https://www.shanghaimuseum.cn/mu/frontend/pg/service/visit-east)
- **Choose galleries before arriving.** The East branch has separate permanent galleries for bronzes, sculpture, jade, ceramics, painting and calligraphy. If you have only three hours, choose two or three subjects on the museum's current gallery list before you enter. Do not confuse it with the People's Square branch (人民广场馆). [source](https://www.shanghaimuseum.cn/mu/frontend/pg/display/)
- **Reserve only the interactive rooms.** General individual entry currently needs no reservation. To use Curio-City (古代文明探索宫) or the Digital Gallery (数字馆), open WeChat, find the official 上海博物馆 account, choose GO上博 → 参观预约, select the East branch, then 专项预约. Check the document and phone fields in the form before promising a child an activity. _Caveat: The public booking instructions do not establish whether the mini-program accepts a foreign passport or overseas phone number._ [source](https://reservation.shanghaimuseum.net/)
- **Take a break outside galleries.** If you need food or water, leave the exhibition gallery first. The museum directs visitors to food zones on 1F and 2F and prohibits eating in galleries, corridors, the lobby and shops. Use the floor map or ask the 1F information desk to find the food zone. [source](https://www.shanghaimuseum.cn/mu/frontend/pg/service/visit-east)
- **Check luggage storage on 1F.** The Chinese official service page lists storage on 1F and self-service small-item lockers on B1. Its English page says B1 storage is not yet open. If you have a suitcase, ask the staffed storage desk on 1F after security; do not depend on a B1 locker. _Caveat: The Chinese and English official pages describe B1 storage differently; ask staff about current locker status and suitcase limits._ [source](https://www.shanghaimuseum.cn/mu/frontend/pg/service/visit-east)
- **Budget for an English audio guide.** The museum's English visitor page lists an English audio-guide device for permanent galleries at ¥40 per set, with no deposit. Ask at the East branch guide-service desk; special-exhibition guides cost separately. The free WeChat highlights guide is another option. _Caveat: English coverage of the free WeChat guide is unconfirmed._ [source](https://www.shanghaimuseum.cn/mu/frontend/pg/en/service/visit-east)
- **Check the exhibition's own ticket.** The permanent galleries and a paid special exhibition are separate products. Before paying a third-party seller, look at the exhibition page on the museum website or ask the East branch Information Desk; the museum says paid special exhibitions are identified there and tickets may be sold online or at the desk. [source](https://www.shanghaimuseum.cn/mu/frontend/pg/service/visit-east)
- **Try a four-floor highlight route.** A commercial guide account suggests entering Shanghai Museum East (上海博物馆东馆) at B1, leaving bags at 1F, then visiting Bronze (青铜馆, 1F), Jade (玉器馆, 2F), Ceramics (陶瓷馆, 3F) and the archaeology area (4F). Use the museum floor map to shorten this route if you have less than three hours. _Caveat: Source account also promotes Rokid guide glasses._ [source](https://www.xiaohongshu.com/explore/69e989b40000000023005645)
- **Ask about free volunteer talks.** A March 2026 repeat visitor reported free volunteer talks at Shanghai Museum East and estimated that one bronze-gallery explanation took roughly two hours. The post says a QR code in the museum showed the day's schedule. Ask the 1F information desk for today's volunteer timetable and language before joining. _Caveat: A single March 2026 visitor account does not establish a fixed daily timetable or English-language availability._ [source](https://www.xiaohongshu.com/explore/69ca7eaa000000001d01c102)
- **Verify the roof garden entrance.** An August 2026 visitor recommended the 5F roof garden (云林) but said the 4F Jiangnan craft area leading toward it was under repair during that visit. If the roof garden matters to you, ask staff on arrival whether the 4F route is open. _Caveat: The repair report is from August 2026; current 4F access and 5F roof-garden access need staff confirmation._ [source](https://www.xiaohongshu.com/explore/6a8d7bfd000000002a039d2b)
- **Ask for passport manual entry.** The museum says individual visitors need an original valid identity document at the B1 East Gate. A September 2026 commercial guide reports that foreign passport holders can show the passport at a manual service lane there without advance booking. Bring your passport and ask East Gate staff which lane handles it. _Caveat: The B1 manual passport route comes from one commercial guide account. Two posts by that guide count as one source; the museum publishes only an original-valid-ID requirement._ [source](https://www.xiaohongshu.com/explore/6aa15647000000001203515f)
- **Do not confuse the two museum branches.** Shanghai Museum East (上海博物馆东馆) is at 1952 Century Avenue (世纪大道1952号), with individual entry at the B1 East Gate. The Americas exhibition from 9 July 2026 to 14 November 2027 is at the separate People’s Square branch (人民广场馆, 人民大道201号) and requires a ticket.
