Why go
If you want one place that explains how a fishing settlement became modern Shanghai, start here. The museum fills the 1930s Shanghai Race Club building (跑马总会), whose clock tower marks the north-west corner of People's Square. It is free, needs no booking, and pairs easily with the other People's Square museums.
What to do
- Walk Ancient Shanghai on 2F. The East Building's 2F gallery 'Ancient Shanghai' (古代上海) covers the region's prehistory and old county town, from Songze culture finds to Ming and Qing life.
- Read Modern Shanghai on 3F–4F. 'Modern Shanghai' (近代上海) on 3F and 4F follows the treaty-port city from 1843 to 1949: concessions, banks, mills and daily life. Look for the Dobson and Barlow cotton machine and an old city map.
- Find the HSBC bronze lions. The pair of bronze lions that once guarded the HSBC building on the Bund is among the museum's best-known objects; one 2026 visitor post places them in the ground-floor hall.
- See a free special show. Temporary exhibitions fill the 1F south hall of the East Building and floors 1–3 of the West Building; current shows are free and need no booking.
- Look at the Race Club building. The building itself is part of the visit: a 53-metre clock tower, arched windows and a vintage lift. It later housed the Shanghai Museum, Library and Art Museum before becoming the history museum.
- Don't miss: Look for the bronze lions that once stood outside the HSBC building on the Bund.
- Best time: Tue–Sun mornings; closed Mondays
- Skip if: Skip it if you are short of time and already plan the Urban Planning Exhibition Hall, which tells the modern city's story with models.

Traveler tips
- Walk in free, no booking needed. Individual visitors do not need a ticket or a reservation: go to 325 West Nanjing Road (南京西路325号), pass the bag check and walk in. The museum caps visitors at 10,000 a day, so on holidays there can be a short queue at the door. Only groups of 20 or more must book three days ahead. source
- Use People's Square Exit 11. Take Metro Line 1, 2 or 8 to People's Square (人民广场). Bendibao suggests Exit 11. The museum, with its tall clock tower, is about 150–200 m away on West Nanjing Road near Huangpi North Road (黄陂北路). There is no dedicated car park. Caveat: Exit 11 appears in one Bendibao guide and three independent 2025–26 visitor posts; the museum has not confirmed it. The 150–200 m estimate comes from the guide, not from those visitor posts. - Follow the East Building upward. The permanent displays are in the East Building: an introduction hall on 1F, 'Ancient Shanghai' (古代上海) on 2F, and 'Modern Shanghai' (近代上海) plus a closing hall on 3F and 4F. Special exhibitions are in the 1F south hall and on floors 1–3 of the West Building, so check both buildings before you leave. (2 travelers) source
- Catch the free autumn shows. Until 18 Oct 2026 the museum shows two free special exhibitions: 'Only in Mountains and Springs' on Huizhou culture (只在山林与泉曲) in the West Building 1F, with carved wood, brick and stone, and a Shanghai–Hamburg 'twin cities' exhibition (上海汉堡双城记) on East Building 2F. Both are free and need no booking. source
- Join a free timed talk. The museum runs several timed guided talks every day and rents audio-guide devices. A September 2026 visitor post says the audio guide is rented on East Building 1F in Chinese, English or Shanghainese for about ¥20. Ask at the 1F desk for today's talk times and language. Caveat: English audio and an approximately ¥20 rental appear in two visitor posts, from August 2024 and November 2025. The museum site confirms that audio guides exist, but not their current language or price. Those two posts do not independently confirm the East Building 1F collection point or today's talk times; the Trip.com guide is commercial and not counted as visitor corroboration. - Go up to the roof terrace. The 5F roof of the old Race Club looks out over People's Square and West Nanjing Road. The rooftop restaurant ROOF325 serves Western food, and a set meal for two or three people cost ¥399 in March 2026, so plan it as a sit-down meal rather than a snack. You can visit the roof garden without buying food. Caveat: A March 2026 visitor and a commercial guide describe roof access, and the ¥399 meal is a dated visitor account rather than a standing price. One August 2024 visitor said the roof garden could be visited without dining; current access conditions are unconfirmed. (2 travelers) source
- Combine with the planning hall. The Urban Planning Exhibition Hall is on the opposite side of People's Square. The two keep different closing days: this museum closes on Mondays, the planning hall on Wednesdays, so Tuesday and Thursday to Sunday work for both. A visitor suggests arriving at the 09:00 opening for fewer people. source
