Why go
The Shanghai Astronomy Museum (上海天文馆) in Lingang, opened in 2021, is one of the largest planetariums in the world. Its curved building has three 'celestial' elements, the Oculus, the Inverted Dome and the Sphere, and the galleries take you from Earth to the edge of the universe. It is far from the city centre, so treat it as a day trip.
What to do
- Start in the Home gallery. 'Home' (家园) introduces Earth, the Moon and the solar system.
- Explore the Cosmos. 'Cosmos' (宇宙) explores stars, galaxies and the wider universe.
- Follow the Odyssey. 'Odyssey' (征程) follows human space exploration.
- See a dome film. The dome theatre needs a separate film ticket on top of museum admission; check the current programme before booking.
- Walk around the building. Stand under the Oculus and the Inverted Dome and look at the Sphere from outside; the architecture is a highlight in itself.
- Don't miss: The view up through the Inverted Dome (倒转穹顶) in the middle of the building.
- Best time: Weekday; arrive at 09:30 opening
- Skip if: Skip it if you have only two or three days in Shanghai and no special interest in space; the round trip alone takes most of a morning or afternoon.

Traveler tips
- Check ticket sales seven days ahead. Admission tickets open online at 09:30 seven days before the visit date, excluding the visit day, and film tickets open at 10:00. A 2025 ticket change replaced the older three-day rule, so check the current booking calendar for returned tickets. Add each visitor's details to the ticketing mini-program before the sale opens. Caveat: The advance profile setup comes from two May–July 2025 visitor accounts, and the app screens may have changed. Same-day returned tickets and the current on-site quota are not confirmed. - Check the current passport entry route. A 2025 summer-evening notice allowed foreign visitors to enter with a passport after a valid booking. A September 2026 visitor used Trip.com without a Chinese phone number and received help with an in-gallery booking at the service desk. Caveat: The official notice covered 2025 summer evenings, and the Trip.com account is one September 2026 visitor. A personal blog described a January 2025 visit but its displayed posting date could not be confirmed, so it is not counted as dated corroboration. source
- Plan a full day for Line 16. The museum is at 380 Lingang Avenue (临港大道380号), near Dishui Lake (滴水湖) at the far end of Line 16. From People's Square, take Line 2 to Longyang Road (龙阳路), then Line 16 to Dishui Lake and walk about 700 m. Leave Dishui Lake station by Exit 4 and follow the signs to the museum. Line 16 also runs express trains that skip stops, so check the schedule before you board. Caveat: Two July 2025 visitors named Exit 4: one estimated the walk at about 940 m, the other at about 15 minutes. An older main source says 700 m, so follow the station signs on the day. - Book rides as soon as you enter. Several short rides and theatres inside the galleries need a separate free booking, and they fill up during the day. A visitor who arrived late in September 2026 found most were full, but staff at the service desk still booked one for her group even though they had no Chinese phone number. Ask there first if the WeChat booking does not work for you, and check that the experience slot does not clash with a film booking. Caveat: Service-desk assistance comes from one September 2026 visitor. (3 travelers) source
- Dome film needs its own ticket. The dome theatre needs a separate film ticket as well as museum admission. The reported film-ticket release is 10:00, seven days before the visit date and excluding the visit day. Keep its show time clear of any in-gallery experience slot. Caveat: The May and July 2025 Xiaohongshu posts support buying the film separately and planning around a screening. The later 22 August 2025 ticket-change report, not those earlier posts, is what supports the seven-day window and the 10:00 film release. (2 travelers) source
- Go round Home, Cosmos, Odyssey. Follow the museum’s three main galleries: Home (家园) introduces Earth and the solar system, Cosmos (宇宙) explores the wider universe, and Odyssey (征程) follows human space exploration. Check the current floor map and book individual rides after entry. source
- Leave time for the architecture. Walk under the Oculus, look up through the Inverted Dome and step back outside to see the Sphere that houses the dome theatre. These three circular elements define the building's design. source
