## Notices in effect

- 2026-09-15 to 2026-10-31: Free AR walking game 天灯幻游记 around the Ren'ai Church and Jinma school sites, entered by scanning a QR code; the Yuzhong listing says it runs until late October and began with a public beta on 15 Sep, while Hualong Net says it launched on 29 Sep.

## Why go

Shancheng Alley (山城巷) is the best-known stretch of the Third Trail (第三步道), part of the 山城步道 network of hillside walking trails in central Chongqing. It is a car-free lane of stone steps and old houses on a cliff that drops close to 80 m toward the Yangtze, with a cliff walkway, a ruined French church and lantern-lit shops. The route described here runs downhill, from Qixinggang to Zhongxing Road. The lane has no gate and takes two to three hours.

## What to do

- **Walk down from Consul's Lane.** Start at the top entrance near Qixinggang station and let the lane carry you downhill. The route avoids the long climb from the lower entrance.
- **See the Ren'ai Church site and Wilderness Garden.** The ruined French church with its round belfry and the planted Wilderness Garden around it are the most photographed corner of the lane.
- **Walk the cliff walkway.** A stone-and-timber walkway hangs on the cliff face with an open view of the Yangtze, Caiyuanba Bridge and the cableway; it is the best spot for sunset.
- **Touch the Tongyuan Gate city wall first.** Beside Exit 1 at Qixinggang, the Ming-era gate and wall give a short old-city warm-up before the lane.
- **Stay for lanterns and snacks.** Red lanterns light along the cliff path in the evening, and ice jelly, tea and small shops fill the lower lanes.

- Don't miss: The cliffside walkway at dusk, with the Yangtze and Caiyuanba Bridge in front and the lantern-lit lane behind.

- Best time: Late afternoon into evening
- Skip if: You cannot manage long stone stair sections; the lane has no step-free route through the middle.

## Practical details

- **Hours:** Open all day · no gate hours posted
  - The lane is an open public street with no gate, and Qunar's listing gives it as open all day, year-round, with no operator or government page stating opening hours. Shops and teahouses are described as open about 10:00–22:00 in Trip.com partner posts (MACKENZIE SHELTON, MovieBuff&), so evening trade varies shop by shop.
  - Individual venues such as the Ren'ai Church hall keep their own hours; John 297 (May 2026) found the church closed on that visit.
- **Admission:** No ticket for the lane
  - The lane is an open street with no gate or ticket office; some exhibition halls and workshops inside may charge separately.
- **Booking:** Walk in; nothing to book
  - No reservation system is described for walking the lane. Festival shows and the AR tour use their own sign-up or QR code.
- **Last admission:** No gate closing time
- **Time to allow:** 1.5–3 hr
- **Getting there:** Line 1 · Qixinggang · Exit 1 to Consul's Lane
  - Metro Line 1 to Qixinggang (七星岗), Exit 1, about 5 min walk
  - Show a taxi driver: 渝中区领事巷（山城巷上入口，近七星岗）
  - One route runs: Qixinggang Exit 1, Consul's Lane, Ren'ai Church site, Wilderness Garden, cliff walkway, main lane, Zhongxing Road. Shibati, the Dajia Lane cliff path and the Huangguan escalator are separate walks.
  - Chinese Wikipedia lists Qixinggang Exit 1 as the exit for Tongyuan Gate; the walk to Consul's Lane starts there.
  - Lower entrance: Jiaochangkou station Exit 5, about 10 minutes uphill to Zhongxing Road, or buses 302, 321 and 346 to the Zhongxing Road stop (Trip.com partner post, Jun 2026).
  - Vehicle access to Consul's Lane and Jintang Street is restricted at holiday times.
- **Foreign visitors:** No ticket, booking or ID step at the lane

## Not found yet

- hours: No operator or government page states opening hours or shop hours for the lane; the all-day claim rests on an open street with no gate and a Qunar listing. (searched: web search, Yuzhong district government pages)
- admission: No operator or government page states whether the lane charges admission; the free-entry reading rests on the open, ungated street. (searched: web search, Yuzhong district government pages)
- foreignVisitors.payment.foreignCard: No source says whether the shops and teahouses on the lane accept foreign cards. Yuzhong district reports describe foreign-card acceptance across the district (Hualong Net, Jun 2024, citing the district commerce commission) and an Alipay tie-up at Shibati (China.com.cn, Jun 2026); neither names Shancheng Alley, so they are not applied here. (searched: web search, Trip.com Moments posts, Hualong Net district report, China.com.cn report)
- foreignVisitors.foreignPhone: No source covers overseas phone numbers for the lane's mini-programs, the AR tour or ordering. (searched: web search (Exa), Trip.com Moments posts)

## Traveler tips

- **Start at the top and walk down; avoid the Zhongxing Road climb.** Take Metro Line 1 to Qixinggang station (七星岗站), leave by Exit 1 and walk about 5 minutes to the top entrance at Consul's Lane (领事巷). From there the lane runs mostly downhill, but still on stone steps, past the Ren'ai Church site and the cliff walkway to Zhongxing Road at the bottom. The lower entrance on Zhongxing Road (中兴路) is reached by bus or from Jiaochangkou station, and starting there turns the walk into a steady uphill hike, which is why visitors send first-timers to the Consul's Lane end instead. _Caveat: John 297 (May 2026) describes this start. MACKENZIE SHELTON, พาเที่ยวจีน and MovieBuff& (Jun–Aug 2026) describe the same route in partner content on Trip.com. The Yuzhong traffic-police notice also names Consul's Lane (领事巷) and Jintang Street as the vehicle-control points around the Shancheng Alley path. Six 2025-2026 authors (康小萌, 吃甘蔗的小黑狗, 小猪佩早, 叽里咕噜, 山城杰娃儿, 旺仔小星) all recommend going top to bottom from Qixinggang; 吃甘蔗的小黑狗 says the reverse costs about an hour of extra climbing, and 叽里咕噜 warns against walking up from the alley. An anonymous reply (Oct 2025) says that after the cliff walkway the remaining lanes down are shaded stairs, and another (Mar 2026) stood at the uphill entrance and gave up. Partner content on Trip.com (MACKENZIE SHELTON, พาเที่ยวจีน, MovieBuff&) says the lower entrance is about 10 minutes from Jiaochangkou station Exit 5, with buses 302, 321 and 346 to the Zhongxing Road stop; Por Journey (Apr 2026, also partner content) recommends starting in the upper part. 旺仔小星 (Feb 2026) uses Jiaochangkou Exit 5 for the bottom entrance and says to walk up from there; 笨小孩 费 (Jan 2024) also names Exit 5 from Jiaochangkou._ (8 travelers) [source](https://us.trip.com/moments/detail/chongqing-158-146193819/)
- **Begin at the Tongyuan Gate city wall.** Exit 1 at Qixinggang also puts you beside the Ming-era Tongyuan Gate (通远门) city wall. Walk to the gate first, turn right after it, and a few minutes later the left-hand lane that goes downhill is Shancheng Alley. Near the lane entrance a gelato shop sells cones. _Caveat: John 297 (May 2026) describes the turn; MovieBuff& (Aug 2026, partner content on Trip.com) starts the day at the wall for about 40 minutes._ [source](https://us.trip.com/moments/detail/chongqing-158-146193819/)
- **Landmarks in order on the way down.** Going down you meet the Ren'ai Church site (仁爱堂) with its bell tower, then the Wilderness Garden (荒野花园), a Republican-era stone house called Houlu, and the stone-and-timber cliff walkway with open views of the Yangtze, Caiyuanba Bridge and the cableway. Shops, teahouses and bookstores line the lower lanes down to Zhongxing Road. _Caveat: John 297 found the church hall closed on that visit but could see the stained glass from outside; check whether the Wilderness Garden is open when you arrive. พาเที่ยวจีน and MovieBuff& are partner content on Trip.com. A Reddit commenter (jonmoulton, Aug 2026) also tells visitors to look for the foundations of the French Benevolence Hall along the Mountain City Lane (山城巷). 狂吃商店 (10 Jun 2026, a snack shop's own post) lists the Wilderness Garden with its giant finger installation, the French-style Ren'ai Church with a viewing platform, the former Jinma Primary School, a library of 30,000 old books, and an old teahouse. 小猪佩早 (3 Dec 2025) adds a Shanghai-style stone-gate building (厚庐) and the cliff walkway for views of the Yangtze and the Nanjimen bridge._ (3 travelers) [source](https://us.trip.com/moments/detail/chongqing-158-146193819/)
- **Time it for about 16:00 to 19:30.** Enter around 16:00 to see street life, sunset over the river and the lanterns in one pass. Lanterns on the cliff path switch on in the early evening and the shops stay open until about 22:00. _Caveat: MACKENZIE SHELTON says the cliff-walkway lanterns light at 19:00 and MovieBuff& says about 19:30; both are partner content on Trip.com. People's Daily (2025) describes red lanterns lighting up along the cliff path each night. 旺仔小星 (11 Feb 2026) says lights come on from about 18:00 in winter; 笨小孩 费 (Jan 2024) found winter days hazy and with little lighting and preferred the evening; 张一瞪 (30 Apr 2025) still met visitors on the cliff path at 22:00 and mentions a feeding station for stray cats._ (3 travelers) [source](https://sg.trip.com/moments/detail/chongqing-158-147192837/)
- **Holiday evenings are crowded; go late afternoon or off-peak.** Shancheng Alley averages more than 20,000 visitors a day, and holiday evenings fill the cliff path. The church site and the walkway are the busiest spots, so visit them in the late afternoon rather than at lantern time. _Caveat: People's Daily (Oct 2025) reports the 2025 first-half daily average and holiday-night crowds; Xinhua (Jun 2024) gives the same order of magnitude. MovieBuff& (Aug 2026, partner content on Trip.com) advises later-afternoon visits for the church site and walkway. 你就是块小饼干 (28 Mar 2026) says the lane is quite commercial now and that a walk after dinner is pleasant without the daytime noise._ [source](http://paper.people.com.cn/rmrb/pad/content/202510/10/content_30108515.html)
- **Wear grippy shoes and carry water.** The lane is stone steps and slabs, some of them damp and slippery. Few shops sit in the middle of the lane, so carry water, and bring a power bank because photos drain batteries. _Caveat: Both are partner content on Trip.com (MACKENZIE SHELTON, MovieBuff&)._ [source](https://sg.trip.com/moments/detail/chongqing-158-147192837/)
- **It is a living neighbourhood; keep photos polite.** Residents still live and sell snacks here, from doorstep ice-jelly stalls to everyday laundry in the side lanes. Photograph the buildings and the views, not faces, and do not walk into private doorways. _Caveat: Xinhua (Jun 2024) quotes a resident who has sold ice jelly and noodles at her door since retiring; MovieBuff& (Aug 2026) asks visitors not to disturb residents and Por Journey (Apr 2026) describes the upper part as local daily life, both partner content on Trip.com._ [source](https://www.trip.com/moments/detail/chongqing-158-151093461/)
- **Snacks and covered-bowl tea.** Hand-made ice jelly (冰粉), iron cake and covered-bowl tea in an old teahouse are the local picks, and most snack stalls cluster near the lane ends. A few yuan buys a cup of tea and a seat with a river view. _Caveat: MovieBuff& (Aug 2026, partner content on Trip.com) lists iron cake, ice jelly and covered-bowl tea; John 297 (May 2026) bought gelato at the lane entrance; Xinhua (2024) describes doorstep ice jelly and noodle stalls. 小猪佩早 (3 Dec 2025) names a bean-curd stall, a sweet-dumpling stall and a pork-and-pickle baked bun seller, and tea at the cliff teahouse._ (2 travelers) [source](https://www.trip.com/moments/detail/chongqing-158-151093461/)
- **Chinese map mini-programs for WeChat.** Two WeChat mini-programs, 重庆山城巷 and 山城步道电子地图, carry full maps, check-in spots and navigation for the lane. _Caveat: Single source: พาเที่ยวจีน (May 2026), partner content on Trip.com; using the mini-programs needs a WeChat account._ [source](https://ca.trip.com/moments/detail/chongqing-158-146062240/)
- **One stretch of the Third Trail: short if you do not stop.** Chongqing's official trail system covers 17 trails in the city centre, over 350 km in all. Shancheng Alley (山城巷) is the best-known stretch of the Third Trail (第三步道), about 1.7 km long with a drop of roughly 80 m. Shibati, the Dajia Lane cliff path and the Huangguan escalator are separate walks. From the top entrance at Consul's Lane down to Zhongxing Road the walk is short if you do not stop, though much of it is stone steps. Visitors who wander through the cliff walkway and the teahouses take roughly two hours. _Caveat: The government article (2022) gives the 17-trail network; the Qunar listing gives the Third Trail as 1,748 m long with a 79.5 m height difference; People's Daily (2025) calls Shancheng Alley a cliff path with a drop of nearly 80 m; Debbie (Dec 2025) describes Shibati as the lower continuation of the mountain-city alley. 康小萌 (27 Mar 2025) puts the walk from Qixinggang Exit 1 past the Tongyuan Gate and Consul's Lane to the alley at about 12 minutes, with one short climb. Some ways down include long stone staircases._ (4 travelers) [source](http://paper.people.com.cn/rmrb/pad/content/202510/10/content_30108515.html)
- **Finish at Zhongxing Road.** The lane ends on the main road at Zhongxing Road, which is also where Shibati (十八梯) begins. From there you can walk on to Shibati or Jiefangbei, or end at Jiaochangkou station. _Caveat: John 297 says the lane ends at the main road that starts Shibati; พาเที่ยวจีน (partner content on Trip.com) says you can continue to Shibati or Jiefangbei; Debbie (Dec 2025) walked Shibati as the lower continuation. 吃甘蔗的小黑狗 (29 Mar 2025) and 小猪佩早 (3 Dec 2025) both do Shancheng Alley first and Shibati second, which keeps the whole route downhill; 吃甘蔗的小黑狗 says Shibati is about ten minutes' walk from Jiefangbei._ (4 travelers) [source](https://us.trip.com/moments/detail/chongqing-158-146193819/)
- **Old school, old-book library, teahouse.** Along the path there is more indoors than the lane shows: the former Jinma Primary School, rebuilt as a creative space; a library with about 30,000 old books published in the 1930s to 1980s, plus old toys; and a teahouse in a converted old house where you can sit and rest. _Caveat: 狂吃商店 (10 Jun 2026, a snack shop's own post) describes the library and the teahouse; 小猪佩早 (3 Dec 2025) mentions the school site and a cliff teahouse with bowl tea. Opening hours and prices were not given._ [source](https://www.xiaohongshu.com/explore/6a27df2c000000003503985d)
- **Another way in from Linjiangmen Exit 2.** From Linjiangmen Exit 2 you can reach the top of the alley on foot: walk past old bookstalls, the former Xinhua Daily site (free), the stained-glass Joseph's Church and the Tongyuan Gate, then turn right at Consul's Lane and follow the trail down. It takes longer than going from Qixinggang Exit 1 but passes more sights. _Caveat: 叽里咕噜 (25 Jun 2026, on a Jiefangbei walk) calls the whole route mostly level with a few steps; the stone stairs on the descent are long. Shop details in that post were not checked._ [source](https://www.xiaohongshu.com/explore/6a3d2dc0000000002103c56f)
