## Notices in effect

- 2026-09-30 to 2026-10-07: 30 Sep East Nanjing Road station closes from 20:00; 1–7 Oct from 16:00. People's Square station may limit entry during peaks. Cars are restricted only on interior Puxi roads 16:30–23:30; named boundary roads are excluded.
- 2026-07-09 to 2027-11-14: Shanghai Museum (People's Square) shows only the ticketed Americas exhibition; permanent galleries at Shanghai Museum East.

## Why go

People's Square (人民广场) is the city's civic centre, built on the site of the pre-1949 racecourse. Around one open square you find the Shanghai Museum, the Urban Planning Exhibition Center, the Shanghai History Museum, the Grand Theatre and People's Park with its weekend marriage market. It works best as a base: pick one indoor venue, then walk east along Nanjing Road.

## What to do

- **Watch the weekend marriage market.** After a museum visit on Saturday or Sunday afternoon, walk to the north-west corner of People’s Park, where parents gather in the north-west corner of People's Park (人民公园) with laminated profiles of their unmarried children, sorted into informal corners such as seniors or 'overseas'.
- **See the city model.** At the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center (上海城市规划展示馆, 100 Renmin Avenue), the 3F floor has a 5D immersive city model, and the lower floors explain the river, the old city fabric and the new towns.
- **Choose one museum.** Choose one nearby indoor venue — Shanghai Museum, the Urban Planning Exhibition Center, or Shanghai History Museum — and check that venue's current exhibition and entry rules before going. The square and park remain separate public spaces.
- **Walk the park, then Nanjing Road.** Cross People's Park between the museums and West Nanjing Road, then leave by the Xizang Road corner (Exit 19 area) to start the pedestrian street toward the Bund.

- Don't miss: The marriage market's sub-corners (seniors, divorced, 'old Shanghai', overseas) sit close together in the park's north-west corner; walk the whole loop of paths.

- Best time: Weekend afternoon for the marriage market
- Skip if: Skip it as a stand-alone stop if you are not visiting one of the museums or the park; use it as a transfer point instead.

## Practical details

- **Hours:** Public square; 24-hour access unconfirmed
  - A commercial city guide describes People’s Square as open all day. A 2024 Huangpu District list named People’s Park among 24-hour parks, but that park list does not establish square hours; temporary controls can still apply.
  - Museums around the square keep their own hours; the Shanghai Museum here is closed on Mondays except public holidays.
- **Admission:** Free square and park
  - The public square and park can be walked without a ticket; museums and exhibitions are separate venues with their own charges.
- **Booking:** No booking for the square or park
  - The public square and park have no unified reservation; the Shanghai Museum exhibition is a separate ticketed visit.
- **Last admission:** No last entry on the open square
- **Time to allow:** 1–2 hr; half a day with a museum
- **Getting there:** Lines 1 / 2 / 8 · People's Square
  - Metro Line 1/2/8 to People's Square (人民广场), Exit 1, about 3 min walk
  - Metro Line 1/2/8 to People's Square (人民广场), about 1 min walk
  - Metro Line 14 to Dashijie (大世界), Exit 4, about 8 min walk

- **Address:** People’s Square civic area around Renmin Avenue, Huangpu District. The official tourism walking guide lists 185 Renmin Avenue (人民大道185号) for People’s Square and People’s Park; this is an area locator rather than a single entrance.
- **Foreign visitors:** Public square; no ticket checkout

## Not found yet

- transport.metro[1].exit: Exit 17 appears only in one undated third-party exit table, which cannot establish a current official park entrance. (searched: official/government web, local news/guide, individual visitor posts)
- hours: Only one commercial guide says People’s Square is open 24 hours; the 2024 district list concerns People’s Park, a different space. (searched: government, commercial guide, district park list)

## Traveler tips

- **Go on a weekend afternoon for the marriage market.** The marriage market (相亲角) in People’s Park happens on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Head for the park’s north-west corner, where parents display profiles; around 13:00–16:00 is a useful visitor-reported window. Look, but ask before photographing people. _Caveat: The 13:00–16:00 peak is from one Reddit commenter. A Paris Review writer used the western gate near Starbucks and saw brokers pack up around 17:00; these are observations, not official opening hours._ [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/shanghai/comments/1uuxhf6/shanghai_marriage_market/)
- **Know which Shanghai Museum is open for what.** From 9 July 2026 to 14 November 2027, the Shanghai Museum on People's Square (201 Renmin Avenue) shows only the ticketed exhibition 'Top of the World Tree: Ancient American Civilisations'. Its permanent galleries of bronzes, ceramics and paintings are at Shanghai Museum East in Pudong. Book in the museum's WeChat mini-program (overseas visitors can use Trip.com), bring the original ID you booked with, and enter at the South Gate on Wusheng Road. [source](https://www.shanghaimuseum.net/mu/frontend/pg/m/service/visit-west)
- **Pick your metro exit before you surface.** People's Square station (Lines 1, 2 and 8) covers a wide area. Shanghai Museum names Exit 1 for its People's Square branch, and its alternative from Line 14 is Dashijie Exit 4. For People's Park, follow current station signs instead of an unconfirmed exit number. [source](http://www.114piaowu.com/ditie_4212)
- **Walk away from friendly 'students'.** A May 2026 visitor was approached near People's Square by two friendly 'college students' who wanted to practise English and invited them to a traditional tea festival. Commenters described the usual ending: a back room, a few cups of tea and a bill of about ¥2,000, or a fake art-student gallery selling prints at many times their value. Decline and keep walking. (2 travelers) [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/chinaexplorer/comments/1tcwu4g/i_almost_got_caught_in_the_tea_ceremony_scam_today/)
- **Expect crowd control during National Day.** From 1–7 October 2026 East Nanjing Road station closes from 16:00, and on 30 September it closes from 20:00. People's Square station may limit or divert entry when crowded. Follow staff directions; Puxi interior roads restrict cars 16:30–23:30 while the named boundary roads stay outside that ban. - **Treat the square as a base, not a sight.** Use People's Square (人民广场) as a base for People's Park, the Shanghai Museum, the Grand Theatre and the Urban Planning Exhibition Center. Cross the square, then pick one museum or walk east along Nanjing Road toward the Bund. Allow enough time for whichever venues you actually enter. _Caveat: Older guides give the 30–60-minute square-and-park estimate, the 3–4-hour outing and the warning against entering every museum in one day. The November 2025 Xiaohongshu author supports linking the nearby venues and park, but does not confirm those durations or the all-museums claim._ [source](https://www.eastchinatrip.com/zh-hant/peoples-square-shanghai-guide-tw/)
- **See Shanghai from above at the planning center.** The Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center (上海城市规划展示馆) at 100 Renmin Avenue, on the north-east side of the square, covers the city's master plans on 1F, the Huangpu River and Suzhou Creek waterfronts on 2F, and a 5D immersive city model on 3F. A guide suggests going here first to understand the city before walking to the Bund. [source](https://relaxinchina.com/travel-guide/people-s-square/)
- **Claim tax refunds near the square.** If you shop around People's Square, two citywide tax-refund counters are close by: Park Hotel Shanghai (国际饭店) at 170 West Nanjing Road, and the 'Bund Ease Life' shop at the Shanghai History Museum, 286 North Huangpi Road. Bring your passport and the store's refund form. [source](https://english.shanghai.gov.cn/en-TaxRefundandDutyFree/20260717/28d924bd7db945e08b212be275cbf3ef.html)
- **Exit 7 for the Bund walk.** At People's Square (人民广场) Metro station, take Exit 7 and walk east along Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street (南京路步行街) toward the Bund (外滩). Stay on the shopping street and finish at the river instead of coming back to the square. Set aside an afternoon if you plan to stop in shops on the way. _Caveat: Two visitors described this route; the duration is a suggestion, not a measured walking time. Exit 7 serves the Nanjing Road walk, not the Shanghai Museum entrance._ (2 travelers) [source](https://www.xiaohongshu.com/explore/69397642000000001e039973)
