Why go
People's Square (人民广场) is the city's civic centre, built on the site of the pre-1949 racecourse. Around one open square you find the Shanghai Museum, the Urban Planning Exhibition Center, the Shanghai History Museum, the Grand Theatre and People's Park with its weekend marriage market. It works best as a base: pick one indoor venue, then walk east along Nanjing Road.
What to do
- Watch the weekend marriage market. After a museum visit on Saturday or Sunday afternoon, walk to the north-west corner of People’s Park, where parents gather in the north-west corner of People's Park (人民公园) with laminated profiles of their unmarried children, sorted into informal corners such as seniors or 'overseas'.
- See the city model. At the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center (上海城市规划展示馆, 100 Renmin Avenue), the 3F floor has a 5D immersive city model, and the lower floors explain the river, the old city fabric and the new towns.
- Choose one museum. Choose one nearby indoor venue — Shanghai Museum, the Urban Planning Exhibition Center, or Shanghai History Museum — and check that venue's current exhibition and entry rules before going. The square and park remain separate public spaces.
- Walk the park, then Nanjing Road. Cross People's Park between the museums and West Nanjing Road, then leave by the Xizang Road corner (Exit 19 area) to start the pedestrian street toward the Bund.
- Don't miss: The marriage market's sub-corners (seniors, divorced, 'old Shanghai', overseas) sit close together in the park's north-west corner; walk the whole loop of paths.
- Best time: Weekend afternoon for the marriage market
- Skip if: Skip it as a stand-alone stop if you are not visiting one of the museums or the park; use it as a transfer point instead.

Traveler tips
- Go on a weekend afternoon for the marriage market. The marriage market (相亲角) in People’s Park happens on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Head for the park’s north-west corner, where parents display profiles; around 13:00–16:00 is a useful visitor-reported window. Look, but ask before photographing people. Caveat: The 13:00–16:00 peak is from one Reddit commenter. A Paris Review writer used the western gate near Starbucks and saw brokers pack up around 17:00; these are observations, not official opening hours. source
- Know which Shanghai Museum is open for what. From 9 July 2026 to 14 November 2027, the Shanghai Museum on People's Square (201 Renmin Avenue) shows only the ticketed exhibition 'Top of the World Tree: Ancient American Civilisations'. Its permanent galleries of bronzes, ceramics and paintings are at Shanghai Museum East in Pudong. Book in the museum's WeChat mini-program (overseas visitors can use Trip.com), bring the original ID you booked with, and enter at the South Gate on Wusheng Road. source
- Pick your metro exit before you surface. People's Square station (Lines 1, 2 and 8) covers a wide area. Shanghai Museum names Exit 1 for its People's Square branch, and its alternative from Line 14 is Dashijie Exit 4. For People's Park, follow current station signs instead of an unconfirmed exit number. source
- Walk away from friendly 'students'. A May 2026 visitor was approached near People's Square by two friendly 'college students' who wanted to practise English and invited them to a traditional tea festival. Commenters described the usual ending: a back room, a few cups of tea and a bill of about ¥2,000, or a fake art-student gallery selling prints at many times their value. Decline and keep walking. - Expect crowd control during National Day. From 1–7 October 2026 East Nanjing Road station closes from 16:00, and on 30 September it closes from 20:00. People's Square station may limit or divert entry when crowded. Follow staff directions; Puxi interior roads restrict cars 16:30–23:30 while the named boundary roads stay outside that ban. source
- Treat the square as a base, not a sight. Use People's Square (人民广场) as a base for People's Park, the Shanghai Museum, the Grand Theatre and the Urban Planning Exhibition Center. Cross the square, then pick one museum or walk east along Nanjing Road toward the Bund. Allow enough time for whichever venues you actually enter. Caveat: Older guides give the 30–60-minute square-and-park estimate, the 3–4-hour outing and the warning against entering every museum in one day. The Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center (上海城市规划展示馆) at 100 Renmin Avenue, on the north-east side of the square, covers the city's master plans on 1F, the Huangpu River and Suzhou Creek waterfronts on 2F, and a 5D immersive city model on 3F. A guide suggests going here first to understand the city before walking to the Bund. source
- Claim tax refunds near the square. If you shop around People's Square, two citywide tax-refund counters are close by: Park Hotel Shanghai (国际饭店) at 170 West Nanjing Road, and the 'Bund Ease Life' shop at the Shanghai History Museum, 286 North Huangpi Road. - Exit 7 for the Bund walk. At People's Square (人民广场) Metro station, take Exit 7 and walk east along Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street (南京路步行街) toward the Bund (外滩). Stay on the shopping street and finish at the river instead of coming back to the square. Set aside an afternoon if you plan to stop in shops on the way.
