## Why go

The National Museum of China (中国国家博物馆) traces Chinese history through major permanent displays and rotating exhibitions. It deserves several hours rather than a rushed stop after the square. Entry is free but tied to a timed real-name reservation, and the north visitor gate has its own approach and security queue.

## What to do

- **Begin with ancient China.** Use the permanent Ancient China display as an orientation to the collections. The museum is huge, so choose a few galleries rather than trying to cover every temporary show.
- **Check the exhibition boards.** At the north entrance and in the central art corridor, information screens show current exhibitions and floor locations. Use them to adjust your route after entering.
- **Use the visitor services.** The north visitor area has service counters, large-luggage storage outside the gate, free wheelchair and stroller loans, and drinking water inside. These are practical stops before the long gallery walk.

- Don't miss: The reserved visitor entrance is at the north gate, not any door facing Tiananmen Square.

- Best time: Opening slot for a long museum visit

- **Admission:** Free general admission
  - Some special exhibitions may use separate arrangements; confirm the named exhibition.
- **Booking:** Free timed booking · 7 days ahead at 17:00
  - National Museum of China English booking (中国国家博物馆英文预约) — https://pcticket.chnmuseum.cn/museum-en/ · passport: yes
  - National Museum of China (国家博物馆) — WeChat → search 国家博物馆 → 参观预约
  - National Museum of China service account (国家博物馆（微信服务号）) — WeChat → search 国家博物馆 → service account → 参观预约
  - Passport accepted: yes — Use the English booking website; the WeChat mini-program needs a real-name account holder with a Chinese-ID (mainland or HK/Macau/Taiwan) verification.
  - Official channels also include the museum website and WeChat service account; admission from other sellers is not an official free reservation.
  - One reservation per account per week for up to five people; three missed reservations on one ID block booking for 30 days; children aged 14 and under need an adult's reservation.
  - Reddit: Daily slots sell out within minutes of the 17:00 release on weekends and holidays (≥2 authors, 2026). Authors: Consistent-Jury-1664, billylks, stan_albatross, zaindada. Does not change the operator or official value.
  - Release timing is disputed in visitor posts: the museum says 17:00 for seven days ahead; Willow (Oct 2025) writes 17:00:10 for seven days ahead and about 16:50 for the other days, 我真替你智商感到捉急！ (Jun 2026) writes that most of a day's slots appear on the previous day at 17:00, and 大司马的分享 (Aug 2026) starts at 16:58. None is an operator statement and the official value is unchanged.
  - Passport bookings: peppermint24 (Oct 2025) booked on the English website with a foreign passport, and zaindada (Oct 2026, Reddit) secured tickets with passport numbers ready; the official English form offers Passport as an ID type. 樱🍒桃🍑耶✌ (Mar 2026) says the mini-program needs the booker to verify an ID first, after which a passport ticket type can be set. 蝶影 (Jun 2025, too old to count) first said passports work and then withdrew it, and masked commenters disagree. Reddit dates shown are thread dates.
- **Last admission:** Last entry 16:30 Jun–Oct; 16:00 Nov–May
- **Time to allow:** 3–4 hr
- **Getting there:** Line 1 · Tiananmen East · C/D exits
  - Metro Line 1 to Tiananmen East (天安门东), Exit C/D, about 10 min walk
  - Show a taxi driver: 东城区东长安街16号 中国国家博物馆北门
- **Foreign visitors:** Book on the English website with your passport

- foreignVisitors.foreignPhone: Overseas-phone registration is not documented in operator pages. One 2026 blog reports that SMS codes did not arrive on an international number; no second independent report. ## Traveler tips

- **Set a 17:00 booking alarm.** Free slots for the National Museum of China (中国国家博物馆) are released every day at 17:00 Beijing time for dates up to seven days ahead. Create your account and enter every visitor's identity details before release time. The booking flow offers three arrival windows: 09:00–11:00, 11:00–13:30 and 13:30–16:30 in the June–October season. _Caveat: The 17:00 release, the seven-day horizon and the three arrival windows are on the museum's own booking notice and English visit page. 总有人喜欢当垃圾！ (Jun 2026) describes a 09:00–11:00 queue and a separate 11:00 queue and 继续向上吧 (Mar 2026) a booking ending 13:30; the 17:00 release timing given by posts is not settled (see the release-timing tip)._ (2 travelers) [source](https://www.sohu.com/a/1058072588_122389421)
- **Plan group bookings around the account limits.** Each account can make one reservation per week, covering up to five people. The same ID number can book at most four times a month and once a day, and a cancelled booking still counts toward that limit; cancel by 15:00 on the visit day. Three missed reservations on the same ID number block that ID from booking for 30 days. Children aged 14 and under need an adult's reservation. _Caveat: These rules are on the museum's booking notice (effective 1 August 2025). Willow (Oct 2025) and 樱🍒桃🍑耶✌ (Mar 2026) describe the same limits; 樱🍒桃🍑耶✌ adds that visitor details saved in the account cannot be edited for 30 days._ (2 travelers) [source](https://www.xiaohongshu.com/explore/690012280000000005001fbb)
- **Use the north visitor gate.** Follow the signs for the National Museum of China (中国国家博物馆) to the north reserved-visitor entrance on the west side of the north gate, on East Chang'an Street (东长安街). Bring the original identity document used in your booking and the confirmation. Staff check both within your assigned window. A museum booking is separate from any Tiananmen Square arrangement. [source](https://www.sohu.com/a/1058072588_122389421)
- **If booking fails, switch channel and re-check slots.** If the mini-program rejects your passport number or no SMS code reaches your overseas number, use the English booking page and look again when cancelled slots are released. At the gate, staff check names against the reservation system and send people without a confirmed booking to a QR code on the wall. _Caveat: Single first-hand account. The author recommends a guided tour that handles the reservation as the fallback and links to one, so treat that suggestion as a sales link._ [source](https://unusualnomad.com/beijing-national-museum-of-china/)
- **A paid special-exhibition ticket also gets you in.** When the free general slots are gone, a ticket for a paid special exhibition can be booked in the same system and also admits you to the museum. The price depends on the exhibition, so check the named show's page. A special-exhibition ticket sold as part of a guided-tour package on a travel platform such as Klook has also worked. _Caveat: The 'around RMB 120' figure appears only in a template post by SYH53 (Trip.com Moments, no sign of a visit) and a commercial travel account (北京好途旅游); no operator price was found. 樱🍒桃🍑耶✌ (Mar 2026) wrote that a special-exhibition ticket can be moved to another time and is valid all day, while the free ticket is fixed to its slot, and that children's special tickets are half price; 拔丝豆橛～ (May 2026) says to buy one if no free slot is left; 顶不住啦 (Jul 2025) bought one after failing to get a free slot. coffeeoundy (Reddit, Oct 2026) got a Klook guided-tour ticket for about GBP 5 a few days ahead and did not join the tour. The museum's holiday notice says not to reserve through other routes, so a third-party ticket is outside the official channel; Reddit dates shown are thread dates._ (5 travelers) [source](https://my.trip.com/moments/detail/beijing-1-145378732?locale=zh-MY)
- **Pack light for airport-style security.** Security is airport level: bags are scanned and large items inspected separately. Leave big bags at the storage point outside the north gate on its east side or in the smart lockers. Selfie sticks and tripods can be carried but not used in the galleries, and power banks above 20,000 mAh are not allowed. _Caveat: Visitors add: 明明爱徒步 (Dec 2025) says to take a down jacket off after security, power banks under 20,000 mAh with the 3C mark are allowed but cannot be used in the galleries, paper is leafed through and drinks cannot be drunk in the galleries; Willow (Oct 2025) says a selfie stick up to 1.5 m and a power bank can be carried but not used. The advice to carry some cash because a few shops inside do not take cards comes only from the SYH53 template post. Whether there is a bag-free lane is disputed: 15-8 (Apr 2026) says bag-free lanes are as many as bag lanes and mostly empty, while 拔丝豆橛～ (May 2026) says there is no bag-free lane._ (6 travelers) [source](https://unusualnomad.com/beijing-national-museum-of-china/)
- **Use the water points and loan services.** Drinking-water points are outside the Ancient China exhibition rooms and in upper-floor public areas. The service desk lends wheelchairs and strollers free of charge, and there is a mother-and-baby room. Bring a bottle that passes the entry check and refill during a long visit. [source](https://www.chnmuseum.cn/zx/gbxw/202609/t20260923_282658.shtml)
- **Use the audio guide app and free talks.** The museum's official app and mini-program carry audio commentary for more than 40 exhibitions, nearly 2,000 tracks in total, so bring earphones. Free public talks run all year, over a hundred sessions a week, with no extra booking. You can also rent an audio guide or join a paid guided tour on site. _Caveat: The sources do not say whether the app commentary, talks or rental devices are available in English._ [source](https://www.chnmuseum.cn/zx/gbxw/202609/t20260923_282658.shtml)
- **Start with Ancient China on floor B1.** The permanent Ancient China (古代中国) exhibition on basement level 1 holds the best-known pieces, including the Simuwu Ding bronze cauldron (后母戊鼎), the Four-Goat Square Vessel (四羊方尊) and a jade burial suit. A common plan is about 2.5 hours there, an hour on the fourth floor for porcelain, jade and themed shows, then half an hour at the second-floor Road to Rejuvenation exhibition. Screens in the north service area and art corridor show current exhibitions and floors. _Caveat: Temporary shows and room allocations change; use the on-site screens to adjust. The 2.5-hour figure for B1 comes from commercial and template sources (全国旅游攻略指南, SYH53); Willow (Oct 2025) finished B1 in about 1.5 hours (see the pacing tip)._ [source](https://www.163.com/dy/article/KU9LAKMG0556DDKL.html)
- **Beat the Ancient China queue.** Right after opening, the B1 Ancient China galleries can mean a wait of about 45 minutes, so a good plan is to see the third-floor special exhibitions first and go down later. B1 queues ease after 16:00. The busiest hours are roughly 10:00 to 14:00; the first hour after opening and the last hour before closing are quieter, and the Empress Xiaoduan phoenix crown case is crowded except at 09:00 or late afternoon. _Caveat: Wait times come from individual 2026 reports and vary by day and season. Willow (Oct 2025) found the B1 galleries not crowded when she entered at about 09:00 and finished them in about 1.5 hours, whereas 拔丝豆橛～ (May 2026) and 15-8 (Apr 2026) describe long queues at the phoenix crown._ (4 travelers) [source](https://my.trip.com/moments/detail/beijing-1-145378732?locale=zh-MY)
- **Use the seasonal last entry.** The June–October peak period extends closing to 17:30 with last entry at 16:30; the rest of the year the museum closes at 17:00 with last entry at 16:00. Your reservation window still controls when you may enter. [source](https://www.chnmuseum.cn/cg/)
- **Reach the gate by Tiananmen East Exit C.** Take Beijing Subway Line 1 to Tiananmen East (天安门东) and follow the museum-only lane signs; the museum lists Exit C or D. When Exit D is closed, use Exit C. Driving does not work here because cars cannot stop in the Tiananmen area. _Caveat: Exit D is closed on set dates in the holiday subway notice; read it before travelling in a holiday week. Willow (Oct 2025) and 继续向上吧_萌萌 (Mar 2026) both leave by Exit D and find the security queue a few steps away; 总有人喜欢当垃圾！ (Jun 2026) says Exit C or D._ (3 travelers) [source](https://my.trip.com/moments/detail/beijing-1-145378732?locale=zh-MY)
- **Pick two or three halls rather than the whole museum.** The museum is far too large for one visit, so pick two or three halls. The Ancient China galleries, the modern-history rooms on the founding of the People's Republic, the Role Models of China wax-figure exhibition and the Power of Science and Technology gallery are good candidates. _Caveat: Gallery lineups as covered in an April 2025 visitor video and may have changed._ [source](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpPs2B4aF1s)
- **Tickets sell out within minutes at release.** Weekend and holiday slots can sell out within minutes of the daily release, and the site can show 'high traffic' for 40 minutes at the start. If you miss out, check back every day for cancellations and for extra batches of full-day tickets. _Caveat: Other visitors booked a day or a few days ahead without trouble in low season._ (5 travelers) [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/travelchina/comments/1sfo53x/waited_at_5pm_to_get_national_museum_of_chinas/)
- **The museum exit leads into Tiananmen Square.** With a museum ticket you can leave straight onto Tiananmen Square at closing time without a separate reservation or queue. (2 travelers) [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/travelchina/comments/1sfo53x/waited_at_5pm_to_get_national_museum_of_chinas/)
- **Keep checking after 17:00: slots appear in waves.** Slots are released at 17:00 Beijing time, but the next day's slots can stay available for a while and returned slots can appear around 17:30. Log in with your visitor details already saved, open the booking page a minute or two before 17:00 and keep refreshing for the first half hour. Check again on the visit day itself before 09:00, since cancelled slots return through the day. _Caveat: Accounts conflict. 我真替你智商感到捉急！ (Jun 2026) says most of a day's slots appear on the previous day at 17:00 and last until about 18:30, with a returned-ticket wave around 17:30, and a masked commenter (Aug 2026) says slots showed and then vanished. 大司马的分享 (Aug 2026) starts at 16:58 and says the 11:30–13:30 slots are the most numerous. Willow (Oct 2025) says the release for seven days ahead comes at about 17:00:10 and other days at about 16:50. Kuma (Aug 2025) says there is a release every 20 seconds and that returned slots are rare; 小猴子妈妈 (Aug 2025) says the same-day slots appear at about 17:00:13–17:00:18. None of these is an operator statement. The refund deadline is 15:00 on the visit day (booking notice). The advice to check again around 08:30–09:00 on the day comes from a commercial travel-guide account (全国旅游攻略指南). carlozik (Reddit, Oct 2026) found that mock bookings on the English page still got a slot 15–20 minutes after release._ (5 travelers) [source](https://www.xiaohongshu.com/explore/6a312b6e0000000011014709)
- **Be inside your time slot: the gate checks it.** A free ticket is tied to its time slot and the gate reads your ID against it. The booking notice says visitors who miss their reserved slot cannot be verified for entry, so count the security queue as part of your slot. Arriving early means waiting outside until your slot opens. _Caveat: The notice does not say how late is too late. 明明爱徒步 (Dec 2025) says the gate will not open outside the slot; 拔丝豆橛～ (May 2026) was sent away for arriving early but says half an hour early is allowed; 继续向上吧_萌萌 (Mar 2026) was refused for arriving after 14:00 with a slot ending 13:30, while masked commenters say they were let in 10 minutes to over 30 minutes late._ (3 travelers) [source](https://www.xiaohongshu.com/explore/694e6403000000001e006d9d)
- **Allow an hour for the phoenix crown queue.** The Empress Xiaoduan phoenix crown (孝端皇后凤冠) on B1 draws the museum's longest queue, with lines about 200 m long and waits of an hour or more in spring 2026. Plan time for it or see the rest of the galleries first. _Caveat: 15-8 (Apr 2026) wrote about 200 m and a blocked route; 拔丝豆橛～ (May 2026) wrote an hour at least and a few people said two hours. A masked commenter on 15-8's post says the queue was a few minutes on opening, going through the galleries in reverse order. This is not an operator figure._ (2 travelers) [source](https://www.xiaohongshu.com/explore/69ea4eb7000000001f031800)
- **Three hours covers the highlights; a full visit takes a day.** A quick visit of the Ancient China galleries on B1, plus the fourth-floor jade, Buddha and coin rooms and the second-floor state-emblem hall, takes about three hours. Seeing every floor takes a full day; an afternoon is not enough. _Caveat: Willow (Oct 2025) wrote about three hours with a hurried route, including 1.5 hours on B1; 拔丝豆橛～ (May 2026) wrote that a day is needed and an afternoon is not enough; the lower-floor-only estimate of a masked commenter (2.5 hours) is not counted._ (2 travelers) [source](https://www.xiaohongshu.com/explore/690012280000000005001fbb)
- **Food inside is limited and pricey, so bring some.** Cafés, a restaurant and vending machines exist inside, but they are expensive, and many visitors carry their own food through security and eat in the rest areas. The water points give only warm or cool water. Eat before you queue if you are visiting at midday. _Caveat: 总有人喜欢当垃圾！ (Jun 2026) brought a burger and bread and found a sandwich at ¥28 and a cup of rock-sugar water at ¥18 inside; 明明爱徒步 (Dec 2025) says no hot food and only warm water; 拔丝豆橛～ (May 2026) says hot drinking water, a restaurant and a café exist and advises bringing food. These are personal reports of a few days._ (3 travelers) [source](https://www.xiaohongshu.com/explore/694e6403000000001e006d9d)
- **Enter by Tiananmen East, not through the square's checkpoints.** The museum's own queue starts at Tiananmen East station. Walking in through the Tiananmen Square checkpoints means several separate checks, much longer queues and a need for a Tiananmen Square reservation as well. _Caveat: 继续向上吧_萌萌 (Mar 2026) advises against the route round the square and 明明爱徒步 (Dec 2025) had five checks from Zhengyangmen; 随便吧随意 (Jul 2026) went by Tiananmen West station and the 01 checkpoint with both reservations in about an hour in total and the two comments who tried it (Aug 2026) agree. Masked commenters (Aug–Sept 2026) say a museum-only booking was sent back._ (3 travelers) [source](https://www.xiaohongshu.com/explore/69c23e8e0000000023015786)
- **English booking page: choose Passport, sign in with an email and keep resubmitting.** Book on the English page at pcticket.chnmuseum.cn/museum-en/ (also reachable from the museum website's English switch). Sign in with an email address and enter every visitor's name and passport number exactly as printed, choosing Passport as the ID type, before the 17:00 release. At submission a slide-puzzle check can say there are too many people; keep resubmitting. After booking, open My Reservations to find your QR code. Carry the same original passport on the day, because the gate checks it against the booking. _Caveat: 叶子在猫本 (Jul 2025) found that a Gmail address was refused and a Hotmail address worked, and had to submit more than ten times; peppermint24 (Oct 2025) received an email with no QR code and found it under My Reservations; zaindada (Reddit, Oct 2026) wrote of having passport numbers ready and getting tickets after a sell-out within minutes. A masked commenter (Oct 2025) gave up after 40 minutes and others (2026) could not see the sign-in option or the English choice. Each is one account of the procedure; Reddit dates shown are thread dates._ (3 travelers) [source](https://www.xiaohongshu.com/explore/6901e4640000000003012bea)
- **The mini-program needs a Chinese-ID account holder; a Chinese friend can book for you.** In the WeChat mini-program, the person making the booking must first complete real-name registration with a Chinese ID, so a foreign visitor may not be able to register. If registration fails, use the English booking page instead. Alternatively a Chinese friend who is verified can book for you: a visitor's ticket can then be set to passport type, which you choose by hand because the typed passport number is not recognised automatically. _Caveat: 樱🍒桃🍑耶✌ (Mar 2026), from a family with a foreign member, describes the friend-books route, confirmed by the author's reply of 2026-05-17. tryingmybest24 (Oct 2026) could not register for the mini-program and ellemace (Oct 2026) could not get it to work; neither says why. Unusual Nomad (Mar 2026; the post links to a guided-tour affiliate) says the mini-program accepted the name but rejected the passport number and no SMS code arrived on an overseas number. Masked commenters say unverified accounts have no passport option and one asks what a foreign visitor swipes at the gate; no answer appears in the collected comments. Reddit dates shown are thread dates._ (4 travelers) [source](https://www.xiaohongshu.com/explore/69a6ad23000000000e00f33c)
- **Do not pay resellers: the ticket is free.** The general ticket costs nothing, but resellers on second-hand sites offer it for around ¥90 a person. Book through the museum's own channels only. _Caveat: 大司马的分享 (Aug 2026) names the ¥90 price on a second-hand platform; Kuma (Aug 2025) says the only booking route is the official mini-program. A Reddit visitor's £5 (about ¥45) Klook special-exhibition ticket (see the other tip) is a different product._ (2 travelers) [source](https://www.xiaohongshu.com/explore/6a82d5f7000000002402e0c6)
