## Why go

East Nanjing Road (南京东路) is the classic first walk in Shanghai: a car-free street of century-old department stores, time-honoured snack shops and neon signs that ends at the Bund. Walk it west to east and you finish facing the river and the Pudong skyline. It is busy and commercial, which is part of the experience.

## What to do

- **Walk west to east to the Bund.** Start at People's Square station Exit 19 (人民广场站19号口) by Xizang Road and walk east. Shops get denser and the street ends at Zhongshan East 1st Road (中山东一路), where you climb onto the Bund promenade.
- **Eat old Shanghai snacks.** Buy a tiaotou cake (条头糕) at Shen Da Cheng (沈大成), White Rabbit sweets at Shanghai No.1 Food Store (第一食品商店), and a hot fresh-meat mooncake (鲜肉月饼) at Zhen Lao Da Fang (真老大房).
- **Look into the old stores.** No.1 Department Store (第一百货, trading since 1949) and Wing On (永安百货) are part of the street's history. Inside you now find theatre spaces, trendy toy shops and a 'Shanghai Customised' craft space.
- **Stay for the neon after dark.** Come back after about 19:00, when signs and facades are lit. The public street stays walkable after the malls close; individual old-brand shops set their own evening hours.
- **Take the quiet parallel street.** When the main street is packed, walk one block south along Jiujiang Road (九江路), lined with 1920s–30s bank buildings and the red-brick Holy Trinity Church (圣三一堂, 219 Jiujiang Road).

- Don't miss: Holy Trinity Church (圣三一堂) on Jiujiang Road, one block south of the crowds, is Shanghai's oldest surviving large Protestant church building.
- Don't miss: The Central Shopping Mall at 139 East Nanjing Road is a citywide tax-refund counter for overseas shoppers.

- Best time: Weekday dusk, then on to the Bund
- Skip if: Skip it if crowds and chain-store shopping put you off; several Reddit regulars say the street itself is the least interesting part of central Shanghai for international visitors.

## Practical details

- **Hours:** Street open 24 hours · malls 10:00–22:00
  - The city tourism directory lists the street as 0:00–24:00 and the malls as 10:00–22:00; individual shops keep their own hours.
  - Some old-brand food shops on the east section stayed open to 22:30–23:00 during a July–8 October 2025 pilot; this is not a current daily-hours promise.
  - Police can restrict pedestrian access during big holiday crowds; follow barriers and staff.
- **Admission:** Free public street
  - The public street has no unified admission ticket; shops, the sightseeing tram, shows and events charge separately. This is an editorial distinction, not a government fee statement.
- **Booking:** No unified booking for the public street
  - Walking the public street has no unified reservation or ID process; individual paid experiences can set their own terms.
- **Last admission:** No last entry on a public street
- **Time to allow:** 1–2 hr including snacks and shops
- **Getting there:** Lines 2 / 10 · East Nanjing Road; Lines 1/2/8 · People's Sq
  - Metro Line 2/10 to East Nanjing Road (南京东路), about 2 min walk

## Traveler tips

- **Start at People's Square Exit 19, walk east.** Take Metro Line 1, 2 or 8 to People's Square (人民广场) and leave by Exit 19, at the corner of Middle Xizang Road and Nanjing Road. Walk east past No.1 Department Store, Shanghai No.1 Food Store and Shen Da Cheng; the street ends at the Bund, so you finish with the river view instead of walking back. If you plan to buy heavy food gifts, reverse the walk and finish near People's Square. _Caveat: Exit 19 is supported by three 2026 visitor posts; the reverse walk is one visitor's suggestion. Follow live exit controls._ (6 travelers) [source](https://hk.trip.com/moments/detail/shanghai-2-142526630/)
- **Say no to anyone offering to take you somewhere.** On Nanjing Road and around People's Square, friendly strangers in good English invite tourists to a 'tea festival', an art-student gallery or a shop with cheap designer goods. Following them leads to a back room with a huge bill or to overpriced copies. Say 'no thank you' and keep walking; do not follow touts into a car or an off-street shop, and check the item and price before paying street hawkers. _Caveat: One Reddit commenter cites ¥2,000 for a few cups of tea. Amounts are what posters report; the pattern is repeated across several 2026 posts._ (4 travelers) [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/chinaexplorer/comments/1tcwu4g/i_almost_got_caught_in_the_tea_ceremony_scam_today/)
- **Plan around the National Day closures.** On 30 September 2026, East Nanjing Road station (Lines 2/10) closes from 20:00 to service end, and on 1–7 October it closes from 16:00. Use People's Square Exit 19 for the west end, subject to on-site crowd limits. Cars cannot enter the interior Puxi control zone 16:30–23:30, though its boundary roads are excluded. - **Leave bags and find toilets inside the station.** Store luggage before walking from People's Square to the Bund. East Nanjing Road station has lockers, and private operators also offer storage near the street. When a station is closed, use storage outside it. _Caveat: A 2026 visitor quoted about ¥10–20 per bag per day at one private operator; prices and availability vary._ (2 travelers) [source](https://www.163.com/dy/article/L2RUBJ5D0514BTST.html)
- **Buy classic snacks, eat meals off the main street.** The snack shops worth queuing for are Shen Da Cheng (沈大成) for sticky-rice tiaotou cake, Shanghai No.1 Food Store (第一食品商店) for White Rabbit sweets and butterfly pastries, and Zhen Lao Da Fang (真老大房) for hot fresh-meat mooncakes. For a sit-down meal, side streets such as Yunnan South Road (云南南路) are cheaper than restaurants on the main street. (3 travelers) [source](https://hk.trip.com/moments/detail/shanghai-2-142526630/)
- **Come at dusk, then walk to the Bund.** For daytime street views and neon, start around dusk and walk toward the Bund. Holiday crowds can build in the late afternoon, so leave extra time and follow the barriers and staff rather than assuming a permanent one-way walking rule. _Caveat: The one-way arrangement was observed on 1 October 2026 and is not a yearly rule._ (3 travelers) [source](https://in.trip.com/moments/detail/shanghai-2-143087926?locale=en-IN)
- **Use foreign cards and claim tax refunds.** CCTV reported in October 2026 that foreign bank cards are accepted across the street and that a 7-language digital help service has been added. New World Daimaru (新世界新丸中心) offers instant tax refund, and the Central Shopping Mall at 139 East Nanjing Road is a citywide tax-refund counter. Bring your passport for any refund. [source](https://m.gmw.cn/2026-10/01/content_1304570548.htm)
- **Walk Jiujiang Road when the crowd is too thick.** If the main street is shoulder to shoulder, walk one block south onto Jiujiang Road (九江路) and continue east. It has about 680 m of 1920s–30s bank buildings, Holy Trinity Church (圣三一堂, 219 Jiujiang Road) and fewer people, and it also reaches the Bund. Looking east from Jiujiang Road at Sichuan Road frames the Oriental Pearl Tower between the old facades. _Caveat: East Nanjing Road station has separate, dated holiday closure updates; choose a usable exit before relying on station lockers._ [source](https://www.wanderinchina.com/zh/destinations/shanghai/nanjing-east-road/things-to-do/)
- **Keep the walk short with small children.** If Nanjing Road is too packed for a small child, use the little sightseeing train for one stretch, then choose a double-decker bus or trolleybus for another. Treat a ferry or Bund Sightseeing Tunnel crossing as a separate leg, not a guaranteed loop. Check the dated transport updates before adding a river crossing. _Caveat: A single parent shared this idea in June 2026; the post gives no fares, connections or timetables. The 2026 holiday ferry and tunnel restrictions are listed below._ [source](https://www.xiaohongshu.com/explore/6a28d0960000000016027e4d)
