Why go
M50 (莫干山路50号) is a 1930s–90s textile mill on Suzhou Creek that artists took over from 2000. Its brick sheds, chimneys and rusty stairs now hold dozens of galleries, artists' studios, design shops and small cafés, most free to enter. It is the easiest place in Shanghai to see contemporary Chinese art without a museum ticket, and it sits five minutes from the Heatherwick-designed '1000 Trees' building.
What to do
- Gallery-hop for free. Wander from one gallery to the next; ShanghART (香格纳) is one of China's most influential contemporary galleries, and island6 shows interactive works by the Shanghai collective Liu Dao.
- Look into open studios. If a studio door is open you can often step in, watch an artist at work and chat. Every courtyard and staircase can hide a workspace.
- Photograph the graffiti wall. The legal graffiti wall along Moganshan Road outside the park changes often; inside, exposed pipes, chimneys and old staircases make an industrial backdrop.
- Try a hands-on workshop. Studios offer pottery, silver jewellery, bamboo craft and oil-painting sessions, and small shops sell handmade ceramics, cutlery and prints.
- Add the 1000 Trees building. Walk about five minutes to Tian An 1000 Trees (天安千树), the terraced, tree-covered building by Thomas Heatherwick; it is a mall inside, so the view from outside is the point.
- Don't miss: The constantly repainted graffiti wall on Moganshan Road leading to the park entrance.
- Best time: Weekday afternoon
- Skip if: Skip it if contemporary art and industrial buildings do not interest you; there is little else to do here.

Traveler tips
- Go to Jiangning Road on Line 13. Two 2026 visitors reached M50 from Jiangning Road station (江宁路) on Line 13, then walked about 10–15 minutes to 50 Moganshan Road. The official directory also lists Zhongtan Road (Lines 3/4) and Shanghai Railway Station (Line 1). (2 travelers) source
- Walk into open studios. Many studios leave their doors open. Two 2026 visitors stepped in to watch artists at work and sometimes talk with them; give yourself time to wander courtyards and staircases without a fixed route. (2 travelers) source
- Start at M50, then see 1000 Trees. Tian An 1000 Trees (天安千树), the tree-terraced building by Thomas Heatherwick, is about five minutes' walk away. Visitors say inside it is an ordinary mall, so see M50's galleries first and then look at 1000 Trees from outside, ideally from across the creek or after dark when it is lit. Caveat: The January 2025 note supports pairing M50 with 1000 Trees and describes the latter as a mall inside. It does not time a five-minute walk, compare creek-bank viewpoints or establish night as the best time; those details rest on earlier sources. (5 travelers) source
- Come on a weekday afternoon. Weekday afternoons are quietest, letting you have galleries almost to yourself. Most galleries keep roughly 10:00–18:00 hours, so arriving late in the day means locked doors; check a specific gallery's hours if it matters to you. (2 travelers) source
- See ShanghART and island6. At ShanghART M50 (香格纳, Building 16, 50 Moganshan Road), the gallery lists Tuesday–Saturday 11:00–18:00 and Sunday/Monday closed. Check the specific current exhibition before going. Island6 and other galleries have separate hours and exhibition schedules. Caveat: The holiday notice does not state a park-wide closure; the quoted schedule belongs only to ShanghART. source
- Buy design pieces, not souvenirs. Between the galleries are small design shops selling handcrafted cutlery, cups and plates, ceramics, prints and handmade jewellery such as the Pearlona shop. Studios also run pottery, silver-jewellery and oil-painting workshops. (2 travelers) source
