## Notices in effect

- 2026-09-20 to 2026-10-27: Autumn intangible-heritage showcase: nine crafts (palm weaving, dough figures, paper-cutting, sugar painting, shadow puppets, Shu embroidery, Tibetan-Qiang-Yi embroidery and others) are demonstrated from themed carts that rotate on a set schedule; shadow-puppet shows run at night.

## Why go

Kuanzhai Alley (宽窄巷子) is three parallel lanes of restored Qing-era courtyard houses in central Chengdu: Wide Alley (宽巷子), Narrow Alley (窄巷子) and Well Alley (井巷子). Today they hold tea houses, cafés, snack stalls, souvenir shops and small performances. The lanes are free to walk, so treat them as a one-to-three-hour stroll rather than a meal stop. They are a separate place from Jinli Street (锦里) beside Wuhou Shrine.

## What to do

- **Walk the three lanes in order.** From Metro Exit B, walk into Wide Alley, cut across to the East Plaza, then take Narrow Alley and finish in Well Alley. The lanes run side by side, so the loop is short and easy to repeat.
- **Look for courtyard gates and stone details.** Old residences such as Kailu (恺庐) and Demen Renli (德门仁里) show what the courtyards looked like, and the hitching stones (拴马石) recall the Manchu-banner garrison that lived here.
- **Sit in a courtyard tea house.** Tea houses sell gaiwan tea in courtyards, and some stage Sichuan-opera face-changing for the price of a ticket or a cup. Prices vary widely between houses.
- **Read the Well Alley brick wall.** The roughly 400 m brick wall in Well Alley carries old photographs and QR codes that play local stories. It is a quieter stop than the two older lanes.
- **Eat one snack, then dine on the side streets.** Try a single local snack in the lanes, then walk five minutes to Kuixinglou Street (奎星楼街) for a full meal at local prices.

- Don't miss: The street has no ticket gate. Shops, tea houses and performances each charge for themselves; the visitor service centre stands in the East Plaza.

- Best time: Early morning for empty lanes; evening for lanterns
- Skip if: If shop-lined lanes and crowds put you off, People's Park and its teahouse are a calmer free stop a short walk away.

## Practical details

- **Hours:** Street open all day · shops keep their own hours
  - The operator publishes no opening-hours page. Two 2026 visitors (a Ctrip reviewer in Aug 2026 and a Xiaohongshu guide in Jun 2026) describe the lanes as open all day. Shops, tea houses and bars set their own hours, roughly 09:00–22:00.
- **Admission:** Free to walk in
  - Tea, snacks, performances and some small courtyard attractions charge for themselves.
- **Booking:** No ticket; reservation claims conflict
  - The operator company runs the public account 宽窄巷子最成都 (named in its own procurement notice), not the account named in the reservation claims, and neither it nor the operator's autumn 2026 news items mention a reservation.
  - Only one recent Xiaohongshu author (梓宸Cyril, Jun 2026) says directly that no reservation is needed, and no visitor reports being stopped at a lane entrance or asked for a booking code, so the field stays conflicting.
- **Last admission:** No last entry; shops close at their own times
- **Time to allow:** 1.5–3 hr
- **Getting there:** Line 4 · Kuanzhai Alley · Exit B
  - Metro Line 4 to Kuanzhai Alley (宽窄巷子), Exit B, about 3 min walk
  - Show a taxi driver: 成都市青羊区宽巷子27号 宽窄巷子
  - The station has two exits, B and D; three 2026 visitors name Exit B for the lanes, and two of them place it across the street from the west end of Wide Alley.
  - Our estimate: the walk from People's Park is about 15 minutes.
- **Foreign visitors:** Cards, English maps and tax refund supported

## Not found yet

- booking: No operator notice about reservations was found; operator and news items from September and October 2026 do not mention one, while a local portal and a cluster of guide articles assert it. (searched: operator website kzxz.com.cn, Chengdu news, local portal, Xiaohongshu)
- foreignVisitors.foreignPhone: Overseas-phone acceptance is irrelevant if no reservation exists and is undocumented if one does. (searched: operator website kzxz.com.cn, English travel blogs, Chengdu news, Xiaohongshu)

## Traveler tips

- **Reservation claims online conflict: plan to walk in and never pay a middleman.** Several 2026 guide pages say Kuanzhai Alley needs a real-name reservation through a WeChat account, but the operator mentions no booking and a 2026 visitor says the street is free with no reservation. Do not pay a third party for 'entry'. If you want certainty, ask at the visitor service centre in the East Plaza. _Caveat: A local portal and several near-identical guide articles say a real-name reservation is required, but none cites an operator notice. The operator's service updates from September 2026 do not mention a reservation. 梓宸Cyril (Jun 2026) says the street is free with no reservation needed and that anyone selling a 'reservation' is running a scam._ (2 travelers) [source](http://www.cfgw.net.cn/xb/content/2026-09/23/content_25225905.html)
- **Leave Line 4 at Kuanzhai Alley station Exit B.** Leave Metro Line 4 at Kuanzhai Alley station Exit B. It comes out just across the street from the west end of Wide Alley, so crossing the street puts you at the lane entrance. The loop through Wide, Narrow and Well alleys then brings you back to the same side. _Caveat: Exit B is named by 治愈熊 (Aug 2026) and matches the station's two-exit layout; the operator notice only says the station is busy on holidays. 梓宸Cyril (Jun 2026) and 一棵竹子 (Jun 2026) also name Exit B; 梓宸Cyril gives a 3-minute walk to the main entrance and 淘乐爱生活 (Mar 2025) says the entrance is across the road. Exit D is described only by 灯灯是鑫鑫 (Sep 2025), in the Kuixinglou Street food tip._ (5 travelers) [source](https://you.ctrip.com/sight/chengdu104/63456.html)
- **Foreign cards, Alipay and cash all work, but carry some cash.** The operator says the street supports Visa and other payment methods, and many shops post English payment-method signs. Expect cards in shops and restaurants, QR codes at small stalls, and keep cash for the smallest buys. _Caveat: These are news reports from 2024–2026, not a shop-by-shop check. Chengdu's 2025 provincial report describes the system as cards for large sums, QR codes for small ones and cash as back-up._ [source](http://www.cfgw.net.cn/xb/content/2026-09/23/content_25225905.html)
- **Departure tax refund can be handled for purchases here.** The operator says departure tax refund is available at participating shops. Ask each shop whether it is a tax-refund merchant before you buy, and keep your passport with you. _Caveat: The claim is the operator's own, relayed by a news site (Sep 2026). The operator has not published a list of participating shops._ [source](http://www.cfgw.net.cn/xb/content/2026-09/23/content_25225905.html)
- **Visitor centre in the East Plaza; translation screens and lockers added.** The East Plaza visitor service centre has smart translation screens and a robot that answers in several languages. Self-service lockers and a luggage point have been added, and the Chinese–English guide maps have been updated. Staff in red vests stand at lane entrances to help. _Caveat: Both items are news reports of the operator's September 2026 upgrade; opening hours of the luggage point were not given._ [source](http://www.cfgw.net.cn/xb/content/2026-09/23/content_25225905.html)
- **Eat one snack on the main lanes, then walk to Kuixinglou Street for dinner.** The main lanes charge tourist prices. A snack costs less in the side lanes, with egg pancakes at about half price, and Kuixinglou Street is five minutes away for a full meal. Skip anything sold as a 'blessed' souvenir; panda fridge magnets were two for ¥7. Zaozi Alley (枣子巷), a few steps from Exit D, has cheaper snack stalls. _Caveat: Prices come from single posts (治愈熊 Aug 2026, _TI***pz Aug 2026, 晚風輕輕吹 Apr 2026) and vary by stall. The Kuixinglou queue advice (arrive before 16:00 at a popular skewer restaurant) is 治愈熊's. 梓宸Cyril (Jun 2026) also advises skipping set-menu restaurants and pricey gift sets in the lanes; 淘乐爱生活 (Mar 2025) paid ¥18 for five glutinous-rice dumplings and ¥199 for a sit-down lunch for three at a chain restaurant inside the lanes. 灯灯是鑫鑫 (Sep 2025, more than a year old) saw two corn cakes for ¥5, an egg pancake (蛋烘糕) for ¥4 and sticky rice for ¥6 in Zaozi Alley and places it by Exit D; 肉肉 (Sep 2026, a food-promotion account) also ends a route there but gives no exit or prices._ (5 travelers) [source](https://you.ctrip.com/sight/chengdu104/63456.html)
- **Agree the ear-cleaning price first, or try a side street.** Street ear cleaning is a Chengdu tradition, but the first quote is not final. A 2026 reviewer bargained down to ¥30, and a blogger recommends Fangcao Street (芳草街) for better value. Look at the price board and agree the time and tool fee before you sit. _Caveat: Both are single-author experiences (治愈熊 Aug 2026, 晚風輕輕吹 Apr 2026); the Fangcao Street suggestion comes from a travel blog that also advertises custom tours. 梓宸Cyril (Jun 2026) warns that street touts for ear cleaning and tea houses add hidden charges._ (2 travelers) [source](https://you.ctrip.com/sight/chengdu104/63456.html)
- **Face-changing shows cost about ¥28.** Sichuan-opera face-changing is shown inside tea houses, and visitors have paid about ¥28 for the show or about ¥18 per person for tea. A shop that advertises face-changing may be only a souvenir store, where performances are infrequent. _Caveat: The ¥28 and ¥18 figures come from two separate posts (Aug 2026 and Jul 2026) and the shop warning from 晚風輕輕吹 (Apr 2026). 淘乐爱生活 (Mar 2025) paid ¥28 a person for a 30-minute show with tea ceremony, Sichuan opera, shadow puppetry and face-changing, and was offered tea and snacks inside; an anonymous reply (Jul 2026) warns of hidden charges for face-changing._ (3 travelers) [source](https://www.trip.com/moments/detail/chengdu-104-151061772/)
- **Go before 08:30 for empty lanes; evenings are lantern-lit but just as busy.** The lanes are packed through the day and never quiet, and on public holidays visitors are shoulder to shoulder. Arrive before 08:30 for empty lanes. After dark the lanterns are lit, but the evening is just as busy. _Caveat: The empty-lane remark is 治愈熊's (Aug 2026); 点都不沉默 (Apr 2026) never saw the street quiet. 梓宸Cyril (Jun 2026) puts the quiet window at 08:30–10:00 with lanterns after 18:00; 梁万田 (Apr 2026) found the lanes packed and lively on an April night; 淘乐爱生活 (Mar 2025, a Chengdu resident) arrived late and could not take photos without crowds. The holiday crowd picture is from a news photo set of 3 October 2026 (中新社). The operator has not published a light-up schedule._ (6 travelers) [source](https://www.chinanews.com.cn/tp/2026/10-03/10707626.shtml)
- **Complaint phone numbers are posted on every lane wall.** Complaint numbers are painted on the walls of Wide, Narrow and Well alleys and displayed in shops. The East Plaza service centre handles disputes in person, and the operator keeps a red-and-black list of merchants for overpricing and rude service. _Caveat: Both reports describe the operator's September 2026 upgrade; the 24-hour phone line is as stated by the operator._ [source](http://www.cfgw.net.cn/xb/content/2026-09/23/content_25225905.html)
- **Photo spots: Kailu gate, hitching stones and the Well Alley brick wall.** The arched gate of Kailu (恺庐) on Wide Alley is a recognisable doorway, the hitching stones (拴马石) are a popular stop, and the brick wall in Well Alley is a quieter backdrop. _Caveat: Locations come from two 2026 visitor posts (治愈熊 Aug 2026, 一棵竹子 Jun 2026); door numbers may differ._ (3 travelers) [source](https://you.ctrip.com/sight/chengdu104/63456.html)
- **The lanes are open all day; most shops run roughly 09:00–22:00.** The three lanes have no gate and can be walked at any hour. Most shops and cafés open around 09:00 or 10:00 and close about 22:00, and tea houses stay open later. _Caveat: 梓宸Cyril (Jun 2026) gives 09:00–22:00 and 灯灯是鑫鑫 (Sep 2025) gives 10:00–22:00 for shops; the later tea-house hours are 梓宸Cyril's. The operator publishes no hours page and each business sets its own._ (2 travelers) [source](https://www.xiaohongshu.com/explore/6a314660000000000803db1d)
- **Add the panda-themed side streets after the three lanes.** Beyond the three lanes, a giant panda installation sits outside the 52TOYS store and a panda graffiti wall stands on Binsheng Street (斌升街). Guihua Alley (桂花巷) and Zaozi Alley (枣子巷) round off the loop, and People's Park is a short walk further on. _Caveat: Route posts by 一棵竹子 (Jun 2026), 卡比卡比 (May 2025) and 肉肉 (Sep 2026, a food-promotion account) agree on these stops; installations and shop fronts change, and a commenter on 一棵竹子's post says many installations have changed._ (2 travelers) [source](https://www.xiaohongshu.com/explore/6a34dc300000000008033fb5)
- **Panda Grandpa's souvenir stalls are about 600 m from Exit B.** Panda Grandpa (熊猫爷爷) sells panda souvenirs at stalls by Shaocheng Primary School's north gate and around Longmen Teahouse (龙门茶馆) on Xisheng Street (西胜街), about 600 m from Exit B. From the exit, pass the police booth, turn right on Xiatongren Road (下同仁路) for about 200 m, then left on Xisheng Street for about 300 m. A small knitted bag was about ¥4 and plush pandas up to about ¥60. _Caveat: Prices are from 爱玩耍的李虾米 (Mar 2025), who counts three stalls, and anonymous replies in 2025 report ¥8–10 for the same bags, no discount even on a ¥400 purchase and a 'free shipping over ¥100' trick; the walking directions and the two-shop count come from the shop's own account (熊猫爷爷龙门茶馆店, Sep 2025), so treat them as promotional, and an anonymous reply says a stall has moved._ [source](https://www.xiaohongshu.com/explore/67dc00f100000000090393e2)
