## Why go

Jingshan Park (景山公园) rises immediately north of the Forbidden City. Its short climb to Wanchun Pavilion (万春亭) gives a direct view down Beijing’s central axis and over the palace roofs. The park also contains smaller pavilions and the Shouhuang Hall complex, whose entry is separate from a simple hill walk.

## What to do

- **Climb Wanchun Pavilion.** Walk uphill to Wanchun Pavilion (万春亭) on the central summit for the head-on panorama of the Forbidden City. The climb is short but includes steps.
- **Explore the north side.** The Shouhuang Hall complex (寿皇殿) is a historical palace group north of the hill. The city guide marks it as requiring separate advance reservation.
- **Pair with the palace exit.** From the Palace Museum’s Gate of Divine Prowess (神武门), cross to the park’s South Gate for the classic palace-to-panorama route. The park uses a separate ticket.

- Don't miss: Qiwang Tower (绮望楼) stands at the foot of the hill opposite the South Gate; Wanchun Pavilion is the summit view.

- Best time: Late afternoon for a skyline view
- Skip if: Skip the hill if stairs or a steep path are difficult.

  - Gate comprehensive service window (east, west and south gates) (综合服务窗口) · passport: yes
  - Passport accepted: yes — The park administration's 2025 answers say passports and Foreign Permanent Resident ID Cards are accepted online and at the gate service windows.
  - A 2023 version of the city's English guide asked foreign visitors to phone (010) 66055431 a day ahead and buy at the South Gate desk; the park administration's 2025 answers replace that: no reservation is needed and passport holders buy at the east, west or south gate window.
  - A 2023 Bendibao page gave (010) 64038098 as a foreign-visitor reservation line and said no tickets were sold on site; that was a pandemic-era rule, and 64038098 is now the park's 24-hour hotline.

- **Foreign visitors:** Gate windows sell to passport holders

## Not found yet

- foreignVisitors.english: No source states whether Jingshan has English signage, audio guides or English tours; the park administration only says Japanese service is unavailable and its hotline has English support 08:00–17:00. (searched: Beijing government 12345 FAQ, WebSearch blogs, Tripadvisor)
- transport.metro[0].exit: The government English guide routes visitors by Line 8 National Art Museum plus bus. 喵小咚 (Apr 2025) writes 'Line 6 to Beihai North, Exit B (north-east)' and 'Line 8 to Shichahai, Exit A2'; she is a single author and older than 12 months, so no exit is recorded for Shichahai. (searched: Beijing government English guide, Beijing 12345 FAQ, Xiaohongshu)
- transport.metro[1].exit: The government English guide routes visitors by Line 8 National Art Museum plus bus. 喵小咚 (Apr 2025) writes 'Line 6 to Beihai North, Exit B (north-east)' and 'Line 8 to Shichahai, Exit A2'; she is a single author and older than 12 months, so no exit is recorded for Beihai North. ## Traveler tips

- **An older English guide asks foreigners to phone ahead.** The city's Jingshan English guide (2023 version) tells foreign visitors to call 010-66055431 at least one day before and buy at the South Gate information desk with the original passport. The park administration's 2025 answers replace that: no reservation is needed and passport holders can buy at the east, west or south gate service window. _Caveat: The 2023 guide text is still on the city's English site, so you may meet it; follow the park administration's 2025 answers. Phone service hours in the guide are 09:00–16:00._ [source](https://english.beijing.gov.cn/specials/parktours/guidevisitors/jingshanpark/)
- **Use the palace north exit.** Leave the Palace Museum through Gate of Divine Prowess (神武门), cross the road and enter Jingshan at the South Gate. The palace and park have separate tickets; do not look for an internal connecting gate. [source](https://english.beijing.gov.cn/specials/parktours/guidevisitors/jingshanpark/)
- **Climb to the central pavilion.** Follow the hill path toward Wanchun Pavilion (万春亭), the central summit. Face south to see the Forbidden City roofs and the central axis; keep space for other visitors at the viewpoint. [source](https://english.beijing.gov.cn/specials/parktours/guidevisitors/jingshanpark/)
- **Check the park’s seasonal hours.** Jingshan opens 06:00–21:00 in April–October, with last entry 20:30. In November–March it opens 06:30–20:00, with last entry 19:30. These are park-gate times, not a Shouhuang Hall appointment. [source](https://m.bjnews.com.cn/detail/1711691334129227.html)
- **Separate Shouhuang Hall.** Shouhuang Hall (寿皇殿) is an inner historical complex, and the city route guide labels it as requiring advance reservation. Book it separately if you want the building rather than only the hill panorama. [source](https://english.beijing.gov.cn/specials/parktours/guidevisitors/jingshanpark/)
- **Use the ordinary ticket price.** The regular adult park ticket is ¥2 and the half-price ticket ¥1. The operator can set higher prices during named cultural events, so inspect the ticket product for your date before paying. [source](https://yllhj.beijing.gov.cn/ztxx/kpjd/202312/t20231222_3508033.shtml)
- **Allow time for the slope.** A fast panorama stop can fit within an hour, but steps climb to Wanchun Pavilion. Leave more time if you also want the smaller pavilions or Shouhuang Hall. [source](https://english.beijing.gov.cn/specials/parktours/guidevisitors/jingshanpark/)
- **Keep Beihai as a second ticket.** Beihai Park (北海公园) is a separate royal garden west of Jingshan. Walk there after the viewpoint if you have time for the lake and white pagoda; your Jingshan ticket does not cover Beihai. [source](https://english.beijing.gov.cn/specials/parktours/guidevisitors/jingshanpark/)
- **Buy at a gate window with your passport, no reservation needed.** The park administration says foreign visitors can walk to the comprehensive service window (综合服务窗口) at the east, west or south gate and buy a ticket with a valid ID such as a passport. Staff help with the purchase and no real-name booking or phone number is needed. The window takes CNY cash, BEIJING PASS, Alipay, WeChat Pay and foreign bank cards such as Visa and Mastercard. _Caveat: The older Jingshan-specific English guide (2023) still tells foreign visitors to phone ahead; the park administration's answers of 2025 are the more recent and direct source. One Reddit poster (CelebrationUsed9188, Apr 2026) also says Jingshan tickets are available on the day; the same post says Forbidden City tickets can be bought on the day, which does not match the Palace Museum's advance-booking rule, so only the Jingshan half is used. Comment dates on Reddit are the thread's post date. Jennana (Nov 2025) says buying at the gate works but meant a long queue on Saturday 1 November 2025, so she recommends buying online; 田心贝 (Nov 2025) bought at the gate for ¥2 and scanned an ID card; Cinnamon (Jul 2026) and 灿烂的阳光 (Aug 2026) write that the official account or a QR code at the gate works without a booking. These authors use Chinese ID cards, so they do not show how a passport is handled._ (5 travelers) [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/travelchina/comments/1syyj75/best_practice_to_cover_forbidden_city_tiananmen/)
- **Online tickets need a mainland phone.** The 畅游公园 (Visiting Beijing Parks) site, WeChat account and mini-program accept passports and Foreign Permanent Resident ID Cards, and sell tickets 1–7 days ahead. The checkout asks for a mainland Chinese mobile number to send the verification code, and the park administration says no foreign mobile number is accepted for the time being. Without one, buy at a gate window instead. [source](https://english.beijing.gov.cn/12345hotline/faqs/all/202507/t20250722_4155057.html)
- **Call the park hotline.** Jingshan Park's public hotline is 010-64038098 and runs 24 hours, with English support from 08:00 to 17:00. The 2023 city English guide gives a separate line, 010-66055431 (09:00–16:00), for foreign-visitor reservations that are no longer required, and a 2023 Bendibao page lists 010-64038098 for the same purpose. Ask the hotline which gate window is open that day. [source](https://m.bj.bendibao.com/tour/341425.html)
- **Shouhuang Hall closes earlier and on Mondays.** Shouhuang Hall (寿皇殿), Guande Hall (观德殿) and Huguo Zhongyi Temple (护国忠义庙) open 08:00–18:00 in April–October, with last entry 17:30. In November–March they open 08:30–17:00, with last entry 16:30. All three are closed on Mondays except statutory holidays, so do not plan them for a Monday or for a late sunset visit. [source](https://m.bjnews.com.cn/detail/1711691334129227.html)
- **Come for the late-afternoon light.** After leaving the Palace Museum by the Gate of Divine Prowess (神武门), cross the street to Jingshan and climb the hill in late afternoon. You may find the low sun gives the palace roofs a warm glow, and locals gathering in the park to sing Peking opera and play traditional instruments. _Caveat: Shannon O'Donnell's blog describes the warm light and the locals; CelebrationUsed9188 (Apr 2026) recommends Jingshan at sunset and Caffeine-n-Chill (Sep 2026) went for sunset after the Summer Palace. The exact sunset time varies by season. Comment dates on Reddit are the thread's post date._ (3 travelers) [source](https://alittleadrift.com/visit-forbidden-city-beijing/)
- **Climb Jingshan after the Forbidden City.** MoronLaoShi says you definitely need to go to Jingshan Park after the Forbidden City to get the best view of it, and the park entrance faces the palace exit. NarrowDiet7558 finished the palace at 15:00–15:30 and Jingshan by 16:30. Caffeine-n-Chill visited Jingshan for sunset after the Summer Palace. _Caveat: These are single-visit impressions. Comment dates on Reddit are the thread's post date._ (3 travelers) [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/travelchina/comments/1ur12xa/are_tiananmen_square_the_forbidden_city_and_the/)
- **Which gate to climb from: five authors, two views.** 喵小咚 (Apr 2025) says the west gate is the fastest way up, 3–5 minutes: turn right inside, left at the first signpost, up the steps past Jifang Pavilion (辑芳亭) to Wanchun Pavilion. Cinnamon (Jul 2026) also names the west and east gates as the shortest, notes that from the south gate you walk about 430 m before the path starts, and suggests an easy loop: west gate, Shouhuang Hall, Wanchun Pavilion, then out by the east or south gate. 是嘻嘻妈呀 (Sep 2026) walks from the west gate's shop 100 m right then left up the steps in about five minutes; with a child she suggests the south gate and its gentle main slope. Yi (Jan 2026) goes west gate, Fulan Pavilion (富览亭), Jifang Pavilion and Wanchun Pavilion in about 10 minutes. _Caveat: The authors disagree about gradient: Cinnamon says the east gate has slopes and the west gate is nearly all steps, while TOUGEE (Aug 2026) calls the south and west gates gentle and the east gate steep. A commenter (anonymous, Sep 2026) says Wanchun Pavilion itself was closed to climbing and only the platform was open. Cinnamon's post is copied almost word for word by 奶油冰淇淋._ (5 travelers) [source](https://www.xiaohongshu.com/explore/680f6b85000000002001fe43)
- **Sunset: arrive 40–60 minutes early, and use the back side.** 灿烂的阳光 (Aug 2026) says the best light is 16:00–18:00 and that on weekends you should go up 40–60 minutes before sunset to get a place; 是嘻嘻妈呀 (Sep 2026) goes up an hour before; _ 不在這裡 (May 2026) watched from the south side after sunset, when the White Pagoda lit up and a choir sang below. 田心贝 (Nov 2025) found the summit packed at dusk and says you cannot get yourself into a photo with the palace; Jennana (Nov 2025) was pushed along at Wanchun Pavilion on a busy Saturday in early November and 波舟Boboat (Jul 2025) found the crowd three deep, but the back (north) side much quieter, with the park open until 21:00. _Caveat: Single-day observations in different seasons; commenters (anonymous) say the afternoon sun is backlit for the south view, so go later. One author, 灿烂的阳光, also advises refusing the paid quick-photo touts at the gate._ (6 travelers) [source](https://www.xiaohongshu.com/explore/6a8c73d6000000002503ccff)
- **Event pricing: ¥10 in the peony and summer shows.** The ordinary adult ticket is ¥2 (¥1 for students), but 灿烂的阳光 (Aug 2026) says it is ¥10 (¥5 for students) during the flower show and the summer exhibition, and 喵小咚 (Apr 2025) gives the peony show as mid- to late April that year; a 2026 commenter (anonymous) asked why theirs was ¥10 and another said the bonsai show had raised the price. 北京野生导览员 (Jul 2026) also writes ¥10 for the spring peony festival and the summer. _Caveat: The author 北京野生导览员 ends the post with a group-buy promotion and is counted as commercial. Cinnamon (Jul 2026) still writes ¥2; the event dates move each year, so check the ticket product for your date. 应博士 (Apr 2025) writes only 'event periods ¥10'._ (3 travelers) [source](https://www.xiaohongshu.com/explore/6a8c73d6000000002503ccff)
- **Seeing Shouhuang Hall.** 田心贝 (Nov 2025) says Shouhuang Hall (寿皇殿) has many quiet photo spots and allows tripods; Cinnamon (Jul 2026) says it now often has art exhibitions inside; 灿烂的阳光 (Aug 2026) says it is closed on Mondays except holidays; 喵小咚 (Apr 2025) says it needs a separate free reservation. _Caveat: Only 喵小咚 mentions a reservation (Apr 2025); the three 2025–26 authors do not, so check the park's notice for the day._ (4 travelers) [source](https://www.xiaohongshu.com/explore/6922cad3000000000d03789c)
