Why go

Jingshan Park (景山公园) rises immediately north of the Forbidden City. Its short climb to Wanchun Pavilion (万春亭) gives a direct view down Beijing’s central axis and over the palace roofs. The park also contains smaller pavilions and the Shouhuang Hall complex, whose entry is separate from a simple hill walk.

What to do

• Climb Wanchun Pavilion. Walk uphill to Wanchun Pavilion (万春亭) on the central summit for the head-on panorama of the Forbidden City. The climb is short but includes steps.
• Explore the north side. The Shouhuang Hall complex (寿皇殿) is a historical palace group north of the hill. The city guide marks it as requiring separate advance reservation.
• Pair with the palace exit. From the Palace Museum’s Gate of Divine Prowess (神武门), cross to the park’s South Gate for the classic palace-to-panorama route. The park uses a separate ticket.

• Don't miss: Qiwang Tower (绮望楼) stands at the foot of the hill opposite the South Gate; Wanchun Pavilion is the summit view.

• Best time: Late afternoon for a skyline view
• Skip if: Skip the hill if stairs or a steep path are difficult.

Traveler tips

• An older English guide asks foreigners to phone ahead. The city's Jingshan English guide (2023 version) tells foreign visitors to call 010-66055431 at least one day before and buy at the South Gate information desk with the original passport. The park administration's 2025 answers replace that: no reservation is needed and passport holders can buy at the east, west or south gate service window. Caveat: The 2023 guide text is still on the city's English site, so you may meet it; follow the park administration's 2025 answers. Phone service hours in the guide are 09:00–16:00. source
• Use the palace north exit. Leave the Palace Museum through Gate of Divine Prowess (神武门), cross the road and enter Jingshan at the South Gate. The palace and park have separate tickets; do not look for an internal connecting gate. source
• Climb to the central pavilion. Follow the hill path toward Wanchun Pavilion (万春亭), the central summit. Face south to see the Forbidden City roofs and the central axis; keep space for other visitors at the viewpoint. source
• Check the park’s seasonal hours. Jingshan opens 06:00–21:00 in April–October, with last entry 20:30. In November–March it opens 06:30–20:00, with last entry 19:30. These are park-gate times, not a Shouhuang Hall appointment. source

• Allow time for the slope. A fast panorama stop can fit within an hour, but steps climb to Wanchun Pavilion. Leave more time if you also want the smaller pavilions or Shouhuang Hall. source
• Keep Beihai as a second ticket. Beihai Park (北海公园) is a separate royal garden west of Jingshan. Walk there after the viewpoint if you have time for the lake and white pagoda; your Jingshan ticket does not cover Beihai. source
• Buy at a gate window with your passport, no reservation needed. The park administration says foreign visitors can walk to the comprehensive service window (综合服务窗口) at the east, west or south gate and buy a ticket with a valid ID such as a passport. Staff help with the purchase and no real-name booking or phone number is needed. The window takes CNY cash, BEIJING PASS, Alipay, WeChat Pay and foreign bank cards such as Visa and Mastercard. Caveat: The older Jingshan-specific English guide (2023) still tells foreign visitors to phone ahead; the park administration's answers of 2025 are the more recent and direct source. • Which gate to climb from: five authors, two views. 喵小咚 (Apr 2025) says the west gate is the fastest way up, 3–5 minutes: turn right inside, left at the first signpost, up the steps past Jifang Pavilion (辑芳亭) to Wanchun Pavilion. Cinnamon (Jul 2026) also names the west and east gates as the shortest, notes that from the south gate you walk about 430 m before the path starts, and suggests an easy loop: west gate, Shouhuang Hall, Wanchun Pavilion, then out by the east or south gate. 是嘻嘻妈呀 (Sep 2026) walks from the west gate's shop 100 m right then left up the steps in about five minutes; with a child she suggests the south gate and its gentle main slope. Yi (Jan 2026) goes west gate, Fulan Pavilion (富览亭), Jifang Pavilion and Wanchun Pavilion in about 10 minutes. Caveat: The authors disagree about gradient: Cinnamon says the east gate has slopes and the west gate is nearly all steps, while TOUGEE (Aug 2026) calls the south and west gates gentle and the east gate steep. • Sunset: arrive 40–60 minutes early, and use the back side. 灿烂的阳光 (Aug 2026) says the best light is 16:00–18:00 and that on weekends you should go up 40–60 minutes before sunset to get a place; 是嘻嘻妈呀 (Sep 2026) goes up an hour before; _ 不在這裡 (May 2026) watched from the south side after sunset, when the White Pagoda lit up and a choir sang below. 田心贝 (Nov 2025) found the summit packed at dusk and says you cannot get yourself into a photo with the palace; Jennana (Nov 2025) was pushed along at Wanchun Pavilion on a busy Saturday in early November and 波舟Boboat (Jul 2025) found the crowd three deep, but the back (north) side much quieter, with the park open until 21:00. Caveat: Single-day observations in different seasons; commenters (anonymous) say the afternoon sun is backlit for the south view, so go later.
