Why go
Jin Mao Tower (金茂大厦), finished in 1999, is the stepped, pagoda-inspired tower beside Shanghai Tower. Its 88th-floor deck at 340 m is lower than its neighbours, but it is the cheapest of the three Lujiazui towers, looks straight up at Shanghai Tower, and lets you look down into the Grand Hyatt's 30-storey golden atrium. Brave visitors can walk outside on the Skywalk.
What to do
- Look down the hotel atrium. Inside the 88th floor, go to the rail over the Grand Hyatt atrium. Below you, 28 rings of gold-lit corridors drop down the core of the tower, a view sometimes called the 'time tunnel'.
- Face Shanghai Tower up close. The deck's glass walls give a 360° view. Find the side facing Shanghai Tower and the World Financial Center, two taller towers only a street away, then turn to the river for the Oriental Pearl and the Bund.
- Walk the outdoor Skywalk. Jinmao Skywalk (金茂云中漫步) is a 60 m long, 1.2 m wide open walkway outside the 88th floor, 340.6 m above the ground, with no railing. You wear a harness and walk the edge with instructors, about 20 minutes outside.
- Ride the fast lift. The sightseeing lift goes from B1 to the 88th floor in about 45 seconds at roughly 9 m per second.
- Don't miss: The view down the Grand Hyatt atrium from the 88th floor; many visitors only look out of the windows.
- Best time: Clear afternoon into sunset
- Skip if: Skip the deck if you are already going up Shanghai Tower and only want the highest view; choose Jin Mao instead if you want a lower price or the Skywalk.

Traveler tips
- Book the Skywalk the day before. Jinmao Skywalk (金茂云中漫步) runs in fixed sessions through the day; a 2024 listing gave 11 sessions from 09:30 to 20:30. Buy the ticket online, then phone the Skywalk desk on 021-50475188 at least one day ahead to fix your session; if you have not called, staff fit you into the nearest session with space. Be at the 88th-floor security point 30 minutes before your session. Caveat: Session times and the phone-booking step come from a 2024 listing and may have changed. source
- Check you can do the Skywalk. The Skywalk is limited to people aged 10 to 60, 1.4–2 m tall and 30–100 kg; walkers aged 10–18 need a guardian walking with them. People with heart conditions, high blood pressure, fear of heights, epilepsy, pregnancy or breathing problems are turned away. Wear lace-up trainers or casual shoes and trousers. Caveat: A ticket reseller lists a 130 kg upper limit; the 100 kg figure is the stricter listing. source
- Leave your phone for the Skywalk. Phones, cameras and loose accessories are not allowed on the outdoor ledge, so you cannot take your own photos while walking. The Skywalk ticket includes a certificate, a medal and a photo set. Remove anything that could fall before you are harnessed. source
- Use the Gate 4 desk for Skywalk. If you hold a Skywalk booking, go to the observation-deck visitor service centre on 1F inside Gate 4 (4号门) of Jin Mao Tower and show the booking SMS. Listings say Skywalk holders get faster security and entry there. Ordinary deck visitors take the sightseeing lift from B1. source
- Pick Jin Mao for the lower price. The 2026 city ticket list gives Jin Mao 88F’s basic deck ticket at ¥120 for adults and ¥90 for students. A local guide lists Shanghai Tower’s basic 118F deck at about ¥180. The Oriental Pearl has several ticket types, so compare what each quoted fare includes. Jin Mao is lower at 340 m, but from here you see Shanghai Tower itself. Caveat: The ¥180 Top of Shanghai figure and roughly ¥199 Oriental Pearl figure come from a local-guide WeChat article, not the city list; the Oriental Pearl ticket type behind ¥199 is not clear. source
- National Day evenings: plan the river crossing. From 1 to 7 October 2026 the Bund links are cut in the evening: East Nanjing Road station (Lines 2/10) and Line 14 Yuyuan Garden station close from 16:00, the Bund Sightseeing Tunnel closes 16:00–21:30 and the Dongjin ferry stops at 12:00 through its 18:30 final ferry time, with no later return that evening. Jin Mao, on Century Avenue east of Lujiazui Ring Road, is outside the 16:30–23:30 car-free zone, so the tower is outside that motor-vehicle ban, but check on-site taxi access and expect jams; shared bikes are banned on the Binjiang Avenue promenade. Lujiazui station may hold passengers outside when crowded. Caveat: Clauses ND-04, 06–11 of the shared 2026 National Day controls table; police may extend or shrink the controls. source
- See the hotel atrium and skyline. On the 88th-floor observation deck of Jin Mao Tower (金茂大厦88层观光厅), look inward at the tall, layered atrium of the Grand Hyatt hotel, then circle the outer windows for city views. The indoor deck shows you both the hotel interior and the skyline. Caveat: These accounts are from 2024 and 2025; they do not confirm current photo positions or what each ticket includes.
