## Notices in effect

- 2026-09-03 to 2026-10-31: Facade lighting is 19:30-23:00 from 3 September 2026, half an hour earlier than before.
- 2026-09-29 to 2026-11-08: Xiaoshizi, Chaotianmen and Liziba stations began Thai-language arrival announcements as a pilot on 29 September 2026.

## Why go

Hongyadong (洪崖洞) is an eleven-floor complex of stilt houses clinging to a cliff above the Jialing River. It was rebuilt in 2006 on an old river-gate site, and is a themed shopping district rather than a preserved old quarter. The payoff is outside: the stacked tiers lit gold after dark, best seen from the bridge or the far bank. Entry is free and needs no booking.

## What to do

- **Start at the 11th floor and walk down.** Enter at the top from Cangbai Road (沧白路), then work your way down through the lanes and lifts to the riverside road on the 1st floor, where the whole facade rises above you.
- **Watch the lights come on from Qiansimen Bridge.** Walk onto the pedestrian deck of Qiansimen Bridge (千厮门大桥) before lights-on and wait for the facade to light up floor by floor, with the river and skyline behind it.
- **See it from across the river.** Take Metro Line 6 over to the Jiangbei bank for a wider, calmer head-on view of the lit complex framed by the bridge.
- **Walk along the river to Chaotianmen.** Follow the riverside promenade east to Chaotianmen Square (朝天门), where the Yangtze and the Jialing meet. It is part of a 2.4 km walking route to Huguang Guild Hall.

- Don't miss: The famous night view is from outside the complex: the bridge or the far bank, not the lanes inside.

- Best time: Just before the facade lights come on (the time changes with the season)
- Skip if: You want quiet and no crowds: the area is busiest between 19:00 and 21:00.

## Practical details

- **Hours:** Scenic area 11:00–23:00; facade lights off at 23:00
  - Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri, Sat, Sun: 11:00–23:00
  - The Yuzhong government scenic-area table (2026-08-21) lists opening 11:00-23:00. Bendibao (2026-09-23) lists 09:00-23:00 and Trip.com's listing says open 24 hours; the operator's own pages give no hours. The outer streets and bridge viewpoints are public roads, not gated.
  - The facade lights switch off at 23:00 in every notice since 2025. The switch-on time moves with the season (18:00 to 19:30 in recent notices) and is announced on the 洪崖洞 WeChat account.
- **Admission:** Free; lifts and stairs also free
  - Shops, restaurants, cruises and separately advertised indoor experiences charge their own prices. Entry to the scenic area, including all lifts, stairs and escalators, is free.
- **Booking:** No booking needed; walk in
  - Passport accepted: not_applicable — Entry is free and walk-in, so no passport or other ID is checked at the gate.
  - Chongqing's July 2024 policy removed advance booking at 297 A-level scenic areas and kept it at six named sites; Hongyadong (4A) is not named. The operator's 2026 notice lists no booking step.
  - Bendibao (2026-09-23) and Kiki Journey (2026-09-22) still describe a free time-slot booking on the WeChat service account; no 2026 government or operator page supports it. The three-slot WeChat booking dates from a 2019 trial (CNR, 2019-06-29). The scenic area can slow or pause entry at capacity.
- **Last admission:** No last-entry time; entry can be paused
- **Time to allow:** 1.5–2.5 hr
- **Getting there:** Metro 1/6 Xiaoshizi · Exit 1 or 9
  - Metro Line 1/6 to Xiaoshizi (小什字), Exit 1 or 9, about 6 min walk
  - Show a taxi driver: 渝中区嘉滨路88号 洪崖洞（沧白路11楼入口）
  - Yuzhong's own guide to Xiaoshizi station names Exit 1 (about 400 m to Hongyadong) and Exit 9 (50 m straight, then right). Kiki Journey names Exit 9 and a 400 m walk to the 11th-floor entrance. Line 2 Linjiangmen is a 10-15 minute walk. The same guide says to take Exit 6 or 9 for Jiefangbei and Hongyadong.
  - The Yuzhong exit guide dates from May 2023; no 2026 government page restates it.
- **Foreign visitors:** No ticket, booking or ID check at entry

## Not found yet

- booking.channels: No reservation channel is named in any 2026 government or operator page, and the operator's WeChat menu cannot be read without WeChat; older local guides and a 2026 blog describe a mini-program booking that official sources do not support. (searched: Chongqing municipal tourism commission, Yuzhong district government, operator WeChat article (via municipal repost), English personal blog)

## Traveler tips

- **Entry is free, including every lift and staircase.** Entry to Hongyadong (洪崖洞) is free, and so are all the lifts, stairs and escalators in the complex. If someone asks you to pay for a lift, for a guide through public passages or for a special entry channel, refuse and ask scenic-area staff or a police officer instead. _Caveat: The free-entry statement comes from the Chongqing Culture and Tourism Commission (via Guangming Online, 2026-01-19) and the operator's Spring Festival notice (2026-02-15). Restaurants, shops, cruises and separately ticketed indoor experiences charge for themselves._ [source](https://m.gmw.cn/2026-01/19/content_1304309690.htm)
- **Walk in; there is no booking step.** Hongyadong is a 4A scenic area, and Chongqing dropped advance booking at 297 of its A-level scenic areas in 2024; the six sites that kept it do not include Hongyadong. Turn up and walk in. The operator's notice lists no reservation step and points visitors to its WeChat account (洪崖洞) for announcements and live crowd levels. _Caveat: Some guides still describe a free time-slot booking: Bendibao's 2026-09-23 page says booking is needed, and Kiki Journey (2026-09-22) describes three daily slots on the WeChat mini-program. Neither the government policy nor the operator notice supports that. At capacity the scenic area can slow or pause entry, so a booking-free entrance can still have a queue. 梅花 (Jan 2026) also writes free with no booking, just go in. 乔乔的风景日记 (Apr 2026) says to book a day ahead on an official mini-program, and 粉黛pink (Jun 2026) and 安小安 (Jun 2026) say weekdays need no booking but holidays need a real-name booking; none points to a government or operator page, and the official sources above list no booking._ [source](https://www.xiaohongshu.com/explore/695f1579000000000b008d95)
- **Enter on the 11th floor and walk down to the river.** The complex is built into a cliff, so both ends are street level. The 11th-floor entrances open onto Cangbai Road (沧白路) in the upper city, close to Jiefangbei and Xiaoshizi station; the 1st floor opens onto the Jialing River road (嘉陵江滨江路) at the bottom. Starting at 11F and working down by lift or stairs means you never climb, and you finish on the riverside road with the whole facade in front of you. _Caveat: Several guides and a Reddit commenter give the same layout. Starting from 1F and climbing up is possible, but none of the guides promises it is quicker. 梅花 (Jan 2026), 乔乔的风景日记 (Apr 2026), 安小安 (Jun 2026) and 粉黛pink (Jun 2026) all recommend entering at the 11th floor and walking down; 梅花 adds that a lift then stairs reaches the ground floor, and 安小安 and 粉黛pink call the 11th-floor viewing deck the easy overhead shot._ (6 travelers) [source](https://tripchina.me/hongyadong-chongqing-honest-guide/)
- **Use Xiaoshizi station, Exit 1 or Exit 9.** Take Metro Line 1 or Line 6 to Xiaoshizi (小什字) station, which has 11 exits. A municipal guide names Exit 1 as the one toward Hongyadong, about 400 m on foot. Exit 9 comes out by a small-goods market: go about 50 m straight, turn right and follow the street. Line 2 to Linjiangmen is a longer walk of roughly 10 to 15 minutes. _Caveat: The exit guide is from the Yuzhong government account in May 2023; Kiki Journey (Sept 2026) names Exit 9 and a 400 m, six-minute walk to the 11th-floor entrance. Follow the exit signs inside the station, which is large and easy to get lost in. Exit 9 is also named by 泡泡旅行记 (Apr 2026), 乔乔的风景日记 (Apr 2026), 梅花 (Jan 2026) and 萌萌哒 (Sep 2025). 安小安 and 粉黛pink (Jun 2026) say Exit 5A; no official page lists a 5A exit._ (4 travelers) [source](https://www.kikijourney.com/hongyadong-chongqing/)
- **Lights run 19:30 to 23:00 under the current schedule.** The facade lighting is on from 19:30 to 23:00. Sunset comes before the lights, so the best half hour is just after switch-on, while the sky is still blue. Be at your viewpoint 20 to 30 minutes early. _Caveat: The 19:30 time was announced by Yuzhong tourism on 2026-09-03 (about half an hour earlier than before) and also appears in the operator's WeChat post of 2026-04-12. The schedule was changed several times in 2026, including 18:00-23:00 in the Spring Festival notice, so the operator account may announce another change. The 23:00 switch-off has stayed the same in every notice since 2025. 乔乔的风景日记 (Apr 2026), 安小安 (Jun 2026) and 粉黛pink (Jun 2026) give the same 19:30-23:00 window. A photographer's post of 5 Oct 2026 (栗子约拍) writes 19:00-23:00 for the complex, and 梅花 (Jan 2026) writes 18:00-23:00, which matches the Spring Festival schedule; the 3 Sep notice is the one that applies now._ (4 travelers) [source](https://www.sina.cn/weibo/detail/5339192432787457.html)
- **The evening rush is 19:00 to 21:00.** Visitor numbers peak between 19:00 and 21:00. To see the lit facade with fewer people, go in daylight or in the last hour before 23:00. The lift queues inside are longest after the lights come on, so use the stairs between floors. _Caveat: The 19:00-21:00 peak is from the operator's Spring Festival 2026 notice; the lift queues are described by Kiki Journey (Sept 2026). The same crowding applies at other holiday times._ [source](https://www.kikijourney.com/hongyadong-chongqing/)
- **Entry is metered by live crowd counts.** The scenic area stops letting people in when it gets too full. The operator states a limit of 16,014 people at once and 200,175 a day, and says it may slow or pause entry. Before you go, open the WeChat service account 洪崖洞, then 洞主有请, 实时热度 for the live crowd map. _Caveat: The limits are from the operator's 2026 Spring Festival notice. The district's crowd-control system sent a red alert at 17:35 on 2 October 2025 and the area was cleared to a safe level by about 23:00; the district counted over 1.05 million visitors across that Mid-Autumn and National Day holiday._ [source](http://www.cqyznews.com/yzq_content/2025-11/10/content_10839778.htm)
- **Qiansimen Bridge gives the classic view.** From the 11th-floor entrance take the passage to the right of the scenic-area sign, or the steps beside the Hongya Cave hotel, down to the pedestrian deck of Qiansimen Bridge (千厮门大桥), about five minutes away. Stop around mid-span for the side-on view of the lit tiers, the river and the skyline. _Caveat: The route detail comes from Kiki Journey (Sept 2026) and Bendibao (2026-09-23); the bridge is the busiest vantage point on weekends and holidays._ [source](https://www.kikijourney.com/hongyadong-chongqing/)
- **For a frontal view with fewer people, cross the river.** The Jiangbei bank across the river gives a head-on view of Hongyadong framed by the bridge. Take Metro Line 6 to Chongqing Grand Theatre (重庆大剧院) station, then walk down to the riverside park. It usually has more room than the bridge, but the ground is uneven and unlit near the water. _Caveat: Kiki Journey names Exit 2 of Grand Theatre station; Bendibao names the theatre front and the river bank as a viewing spot. Reddit posters jonmoulton (Oct 2025), gonzojester (Oct 2025) and mrsabuydee (Jan 2026) also point to the north bank for the head-on view; a hotel stay in August 2026 is described as a good night view but not a wide one. Rooms facing Hongyadong are available at the Regent hotel on that bank._ (3 travelers) [source](https://www.kikijourney.com/hongyadong-chongqing/)
- **Daijia Alley is the quiet side angle.** Just beside the 1st floor, Daijia Alley (戴家巷) has a cliffside walkway with a side-on view of the complex, and it is often far emptier than the riverside pavement under the facade. _Caveat: Yuzhong tourism names the walkway in its 2026-09-03 lighting post; the nearly empty description is from Kiki Journey (Sept 2026), written on a weeknight. 梅花 (Jan 2026) lists the Daijia Alley trail as viewpoint 1, and 安小安 and 粉黛pink (Jun 2026) call it a quiet cliff-side path away from the crowds._ (3 travelers) [source](https://www.sina.cn/weibo/detail/5339192432787457.html)
- **There is no paid fast pass.** Nobody needs to pay to enter Hongyadong, and there is no paid priority entry. Official warnings name four things to ignore: touts who offer to lead you in for a fee, a fast channel, lift charges, and bronze-statue photo hawks. Keep any receipt, and report problems to the scenic-area line, 023-63039950. _Caveat: After a tourist was solicited by a photographer in July 2025, the district fined the person, banned them from the scenic area and announced a market crackdown on paid guiding and touting. Kiki Journey (Sept 2026) says street photographers offered portraits for about CNY 8-10 each; a photo bought openly is a normal purchase._ [source](https://m.gmw.cn/2026-01/19/content_1304309690.htm)
- **Treat the inside as a bonus and plan 1.5 to 2.5 hours.** Most of the pleasure is the architecture and the level changes, not the shops. Inside are lanes of snacks, souvenir shops, bars and restaurants stacked over eleven floors, and it is easy to lose track of which floor you are on. Allow about 90 to 150 minutes including the bridge walk, and pick one or two floors, such as the 4th-floor food street. _Caveat: Kiki Journey (Sept 2026) found the 4th-floor snacks tourist-priced and fine rather than memorable. The operator page lists a 1980s-themed street and a Ba-culture experience space; floors and tenants change. Reddit (November 2025): a visitor entered from the street level at the top and from the riverside at the bottom, found the levels maze-like and spent 2-3 hours. Reddit (March 2026): a visitor who ended up at Hongyadong on their first night suspected it was not the best spot for local food._ (3 travelers) [source](https://www.kikijourney.com/hongyadong-chongqing/)
- **Walk the new riverside promenade to Chaotianmen.** A 2.4 km riverside promenade links Hongyadong, Chaotianmen and Huguang Guild Hall, with waterside greenery, 15 rest seats and a platform for watching the two rivers meet. Chaotianmen Square is at the east end; allow about half an hour each way. _Caveat: The promenade opened to the public in early December 2025 (Chongqing government site, 2025-12-05). The government page gives no walking time; the half hour is a map estimate. A family blog (April 2026) walked it from Chaotianmen, reached Qiansimen Bridge and then had to climb hundreds of steps up to the Hongyadong road, and some visitors turned back at the stairs._ [source](https://jerlene.blogspot.com/2026/04/20-apr-2026-ckg-day-3-exploring.html)
- **Grand Theatre station exits differ between guides.** For the riverside view of Hongyadong, ride Line 6 to Chongqing Grand Theatre (重庆大剧院) station and walk down to the river. Guides give different exit numbers (Exit 4, Exit 3, Exit 1 and Exit 2), so follow the signs for the riverside park and the Qiansimen Bridge approach rather than trusting one number. _Caveat: 泡泡旅行记 (Apr 2026) gives Exit 4 for the Grand Theatre viewpoint and Exit 2 for the riverside park; 萌萌哒 (Sep 2025) gives Exit 4 toward Qiansimen Bridge; 乔乔的风景日记 (Apr 2026) says Exit 3 comes out at the bridge, and a reply (anonymous) says Exit 3 put them on the wrong side of the road; 栗子约拍, a photographer selling shoots (Oct 2026), gives Exit 1 and about four minutes to the river. No official page lists these exits._ (3 travelers) [source](https://www.xiaohongshu.com/explore/69eb6e530000000036030c69)
- **Luggage lockers are outside Xiaoshizi Exit 9.** There are luggage lockers on the square just outside Xiaoshizi station, not inside the station. From Exit 9 turn right and take the escalator down to the first bank of lockers. If that bank is full, go left into the indoor shopping street and follow the signs to the lockers beside the toilets, which usually have more free boxes. _Caveat: 荔枝三三 (Jan 2026) gives the route; da.da.da. (Oct 2025) calls the lockers free, while 荔枝三三 does not mention a fee. Anonymous replies from Mar to Oct 2026 report finding space (13:38 on 8 Aug with big and small boxes free) and one says the down escalator was out of service in Sep 2026. Locker rules and charges are not published by the operator._ (2 travelers) [source](https://www.xiaohongshu.com/explore/696b3370000000000a03e605)
- **Online cruise tickets may not get you aboard in holiday crowds.** Evening river-cruise tickets sold on Douyin and by street sellers near the pier are only a ticket, not a booked seat. During the Spring Festival crowds a traveller could not get on the boat, and the seller would not refund tickets that could not be used. If the river view is the point, the bridge and the Grand Theatre bank show it for free. _Caveat: 啾啾啾啾啾啾 (20 Feb 2026) bought three Douyin tickets, arrived at 18:00, was told boarding ran until 22:30 and gave up; she guessed the queue at about four hours. A reply (anonymous) says tickets bought at the Chaotianmen pier also show the Hongyadong view. One report during the Spring Festival, not a measured queue time._ [source](https://www.xiaohongshu.com/explore/699869e5000000001a034256)
- **Riverside photographers quote about ¥68 for ten photos.** Photographers work the riverside across from Hongyadong. Advertised prices of ¥1 or ¥3 a photo are bait; the usual quote is about ¥68 for ten photos, with props such as lanterns often included. Agree the total and the number of retouched photos before you start, and be wary of makeup-and-costume packages. _Caveat: 栗子约拍 (5 Oct 2026) and 洪崖洞拍照 (3 Oct 2026) both sell shoots at ¥68 for ten and are commercial; 开心朵朵妮 (3 Oct 2025) describes a ¥199 lure that became a ¥699 makeup package with poor results, and replies agree. The 5 Oct post warns that photographers copy other people's sample pictures. 小马哥滴妈咪 (19 Dec 2025) also quotes ten photos for ¥68 from photographers at the riverside park across from Hongyadong, and says that in high water the bank is closed for safety._ (2 travelers) [source](https://www.xiaohongshu.com/explore/6ac37807000000000a01d414)
- **Bridge lights have a shorter window than the facade.** Qiansimen Bridge is lit for fewer hours than Hongyadong itself, so a late visit can leave the bridge dark while the facade is still on. Reach the bridge around 19:30 to see both lit together. _Caveat: 梅花 (Jan 2026) writes 19:30-21:30 for the bridge; 栗子约拍 (5 Oct 2026) writes 19:30-21:00; 如初摄影工作室 (Dec 2023) wrote 19:30-21:30. The operator has not published the bridge schedule, and an older photographer post (Jun 2025) gave 20:00-22:30._ [source](https://www.xiaohongshu.com/explore/695f1579000000000b008d95)
- **Taxis near Hongyadong are slow at peak; use the metro.** A taxi to or from Hongyadong can stall in traffic. Take the metro to Xiaoshizi or Grand Theatre station instead. _Caveat: Lixiaoyao (9 Feb 2026, Spring Festival period) says three of five taxi drivers cited traffic or a confusing detour and asked them to get out. Replies recommending the metro are anonymous. A holiday-period account, not a measured delay._ [source](https://www.xiaohongshu.com/explore/6989e974000000001a026dbe)
