Why go
The Great Mosque of Xi’an is a functioning mosque tucked into Huajue Lane behind the Muslim Quarter. Its sequence of Chinese-style courtyards, stonework and Islamic inscriptions is the draw, as well as a chance to see a distinct part of Xi’an’s living religious history. This entry covers the mosque grounds only, not the surrounding food streets.
What to do
- Find Huajue Lane. From the Drum Tower and Beiyuanmen, turn into 化觉巷 and look for the mosque entrance at number 30.
- Walk the courtyards. Follow the axial sequence of gates, arches and courtyards rather than expecting a single hall.
- Observe the prayer hall respectfully. The main prayer hall is for worshippers only; look in from its doorway and view the rest of the architecture from the courtyards.
- Best time: A quieter daytime courtyard visit
- Skip if: If you only want the lively street scene, the free Muslim Quarter streets outside already offer it.
Practical details
- Hours: Opens 08:00 daily · daytime visit
- VisitXian gives a 09:00 opening from December to February, so “opens 08:00” does not hold in winter on that source.
- Closing time differs between the three guide pages (18:00 to 21:00); the mosque has not published its own. Arrive before 18:00 to be sure.
- Only 王一二 (2025-04) says the mosque is closed on Mondays; four later posts describe visits without a closed day and the others do not mention it.
- Bendibao and Qunar both give 08:00–20:00 (entry to 19:00) for 1 May–31 August and, in Qunar’s listing, 08:00–18:40 for 1 September–30 April; VisitXian also gives about 18:40 in the cooler months. None of them is from the mosque.
- Admission: Adult ¥25 (Mar–Nov) · ¥15 (Dec–Feb)
- Adult (Mar–Nov): ¥25
- Adult (Dec–Feb): ¥15
- Concession: Students with a valid student card (VisitXian; whether foreign students qualify is unknown) ¥15 (Student card)
- Free: Muslim visitors who come to pray (Tell the staff at the entrance)
- Both prices come from non-operator pages (Bendibao says ¥25, “subject to the actual price”; VisitXian gives ¥25 for March–November and ¥15 for December–February).
- Four 2026 posts state ¥25 (杨小小, xuan_游记, Rainee想戒拖延症, 王又恩Ewan, June–September). 李斯本 (2026-04) wrote ¥15 on a visit in April; an unnamed commenter said the price had just risen to ¥25.

Traveler tips
- Search the full Chinese name. Type 化觉巷清真大寺 or 化觉巷30号 into the map. A search for “mosque” alone can lead to other worship sites in the Hui quarter. source
- Walk behind the food street. The mosque is northwest of the Drum Tower in Huajue Lane, not on the centre line of Beiyuanmen. Turn off the food street to find the quieter lane and entrance. source
- Give the courtyards time. The layout is a sequence of Chinese-style courtyards along a central axis: five courts, ornate archways, glazed-tile roofs and gardens, with the prayer hall at the far west end. Follow the axis slowly to see the roofs and carved-stone details. source
- Visits pause during daily prayers. Visitor entry is paused during the five daily prayers, and the Friday midday prayer is the heaviest restriction. Keep voices low and do not interrupt worshippers. Caveat: Pause during prayers is from VisitXian; the “keep voices low” request is in Roam’s guide, a content-farm page. source
- Do not assume street entry covers the mosque. The surrounding Muslim Quarter is public street space; the mosque is a separate ticketed step, with its own ticket (¥25 in March–November) and rules at the gate. Caveat: Ticket price from non-operator pages. source
- Use a calm pause in the quarter. A recent visitor described a tranquil hour here just behind the food street. It is a useful change of pace after the busiest market stretch. Caveat: One traveller account; crowd levels vary. source
- Courtyards are fine to photograph; ask before photographing people. You can photograph the courtyards. Ask permission before photographing people, and do not point a camera at worshippers at prayer. source
- Look into the prayer hall from the doorway; non-Muslims do not enter. The main prayer hall is for worshippers only. Look in from the doorway but do not enter, and never walk in front of someone praying. Walk the courtyards that lead west along the axis toward it. Caveat: VisitXian: the hall is only for worshippers; Roam’s guide words it as not open to non-Muslims during prayer times. 央央Wesley- (2026-01) says non-believers cannot enter the hall, and 游漫漫游 (2025-10) says some areas are for believers only. An unnamed commenter says photography is not allowed at the Daxuexi Lane mosque, a different site. (2 travelers) source
- Friday noon is crowded with worshippers. The weekly Friday congregational prayer (主麻) fills the mosque around 11:30–14:00, and visitors may be asked to wait aside or walk around. Bendibao calls it crowded but also a chance to see Muslim culture up close. Caveat: Time window from VisitXian; Bendibao gives no hours. source
- Cover shoulders and knees. Cover your shoulders and knees. Women do not need a headscarf in the courtyards, but shorts, short skirts and tank tops are not welcome. Keep voices low. Caveat: Dress detail is from VisitXian; Roam’s guide only asks for respectful dress and behaviour; 关公大战奥特曼 (2024-11) also says no shouting or eating and to dress properly. source
- Arrive before 18:00; adult ticket ¥25 in season. Guides disagree on closing time, from about 18:00 in winter to 20:00 or later in summer, so arrive before 18:00 to be sure of getting in. The adult ticket is ¥25 from March to November and ¥15 in winter. Caveat: Bendibao and Qunar: 08:00–20:00, last entry 19:00 for 1 May–31 August, and Qunar 08:00–18:40 for 1 September–30 April; Roam (content-farm): 21:00, 19:00 in winter; VisitXian: March–November about 18:40/19:00, December–February 09:00–18:00. The mosque has published none of these. source
- One of ten mosques in the quarter. One 2025 blog says the quarter has ten mosques and calls the Great Mosque the best known, combining Chinese temple-style architecture with Islamic elements. source
- Muslim visitors enter free. Muslims who come to pray do not need the ¥25 ticket: tell the staff at the entrance. The Friday congregational prayer starts around 12:50. Caveat: Single guide page; confirm at the gate. source
- Find the low gate in Huajue Lane. From the Drum Tower and Beiyuanmen, turn into the narrow Huajue Lane (化觉巷); the mosque’s gate is low and easy to miss. One 2025 post says it is quicker to come in from Xiyangshi or Daxuexi Lane. _Caveat: 杨小小 (2026-08) and xuan_游记 (2026-08) describe turning into the lane; 蟹蟹快跑 (2025-06) says Xiyangshi/Daxuexi Lane is faster. Single-line descriptions, not a map._ (3 travelers) source
- Line 6 Guangjijie station: Exit D1 or A1. One June 2026 visitor says Line 6 Guangjijie station Exit D1, then 650 m on foot; Bendibao and a Trip.com post say A1. A May 2026 visitor used Exit A1 to enter Daxuexi Lane (大学习巷). Caveat: Rainee想戒拖延症 (2026-06) says D1; 蓝莓果仁 (2026-05) went from A1 into Daxuexi Lane, not necessarily to the mosque gate. No exit for the mosque is given because the posts disagree. (2 travelers) source
- Tickets are bought at the gate window. The mosque sells its ticket at a small window where Huajue Lane meets the market; VisitXian says no advance booking is needed, and a 2025 visitor says the same. Cash and QR payment both worked for one poster. Caveat: VisitXian (2026-09), 游漫漫游 (2025-10), The Afterglow of Dusk (2025-04) and 蟹蟹快跑 (2025-06); the operator’s own booking notice was not found. Unnamed commenters repeatedly ask whether booking or ID is needed and get no answer. (3 travelers) source
- Allow about an hour; it is a small site. Posters differ on time: one walked the site in about half an hour, another suggests 1–2 hours and a third 1–3 hours. Some areas are for worshippers only. Caveat: 游漫漫游 (2025-10) found it small, with worshipper-only areas, and called the ¥20 audio guide unnecessary; he also saw the Phoenix Pavilion under repair at that time. Pandakopf (2025-06) and Rainee (2026-06) suggest 1–2 and 1–3 hours. An unnamed commenter (2026-06) walked it in 15 minutes and found several courtyards marked for visitors to keep out. (3 travelers) source
- A free booklet at the entrance covers the history. A small booklet with the history of the mosque and its key objects is handed out with the ticket, so the ¥20 audio guide is not needed. Caveat: 游漫漫游 (2025-10), Rainee想戒拖延症 (2026-06) and 关公大战奥特曼 (2024-11) each mention the booklet; only 游漫漫游 priced the audio guide. (3 travelers) source
