Why go
Grand Tang Dynasty Ever-bright City is a long pedestrian street south of the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, built around Tang-themed sculpture, lighting, shopping and public performance. The walk is the attraction, especially after dark; shops and shows each have their own hours. The pagoda and Da Ci’en Temple are separate from this street entry.
What to do
- Walk the central avenue. Follow the long pedestrian spine and its large Tang-themed sculpture groups.
- See the night setting. Return after the lighting comes on to experience the avenue as a night promenade rather than only a daytime shopping street.
- Browse side experiences. Look at the food, craft and performance areas as separate optional stops along the walk.
- Best time: After dark for the lit avenue
- Skip if: If heavy pedestrian crowds are uncomfortable, visit earlier for the sculptures.

Traveler tips
- Walk south from the pagoda. Use 大雁塔南广场 as the north end, then follow the pedestrian avenue south. The long sculpture spine gives a natural route without needing a separate entrance gate. source
- Treat shops as separate venues. The public street is one walk, but restaurants, shops and indoor experiences each set their own trading hours and charges. Read the sign at a specific venue before planning around it. source
- Come after dark for the intended look. The district’s Tang-themed lighting and performance atmosphere is strongest at night. A daytime walk is better for looking closely at sculpture with less spectacle. source
- Keep the pagoda on its own plan. The Giant Wild Goose Pagoda and Da Ci’en Temple sit nearby but are not part of street admission. A photo from the promenade does not mean you have entered the temple. source
- Visitor numbers are capped and directed. The Qujiang district limits the whole day’s visitors to 300,000 and the night-time flow to 60,000 an hour, and uses one-way circulation guidance during holidays. Follow temporary barriers rather than trying to cross a dense stream to reach a performance. Caveat: From a 2025-07 official reply on a proposal. A blogger describing a late-May 2025 evening put the peak between 20:00 and 23:00 at 100,000–300,000 people, but his group left at 20:30, so the later hours are not first-hand. source
- Look beyond the first sculpture. The central pedestrian sculpture walk is about 1,500 m long. Walk past the first crowded photo point to see further Tang-themed groups, the 24 relief pillars and the Kaiyuan Square dragon columns. source
- Holiday shuttle buses leave from four stops. Before holidays the city runs four metro-shuttle lines and four direct lines to the Bell Tower, with stops at Dayanta North Square, Xi’an Art Museum, Chang’an 12 Hours and Kaiyuan Square. Ask staff where to board when you leave. Caveat: Lines and stops are set before each holiday. source
- The promenade is 2.1 km long. The street is about 2.1 km long, so a short evening only covers part of it. Decide in advance how far south you want to walk from the pagoda. Caveat: A 2025 blog also gives 500 m for the width, which no official page states. source
- What the evening looks like. On the lit street, NPC performers such as “Li Bai” on the giant lantern stage and the “roly-poly lady” near the pagoda draw crowds, and visitors in Tang dress pose for photos. One 2025 blogger also saw lantern displays, fountain shows, shadow puppetry and digital projections on the building facades. source
- Visit the temple first, then walk the street after dark. The Giant Wild Goose Pagoda and Da Ci’en Temple are daytime sights, so visit them first and walk the street after dark. Caveat: The temple’s hours are not published: the 2019 municipal page says 9:00–17:00 and farm pages give times up to 18:00 (see the pagoda entry). The Alfred Lee blog says nothing about the temple’s hours; it only says his group had to regroup at 20:30 and saw part of the street. source
- Opinions split: tourist trap or a nice evening. Saralentine calls it a tourist trap. Two other commenters in the same thread say you can hardly move through the crowd in costume and that it was a waste of time. LooneyLuv (April 2026) spent nothing and found it a nice place to spend the evening. (4 travelers) source
- Show times shift; check the district’s official account the same day. Posters give conflicting show times: the North Square fountain at 19:00 and 21:00 in most posts, but also 16:00, and some evenings no fountain at all. A visitor planned an evening around a poster’s list and found the day’s shows had ended at 16:00. The district’s official WeChat account (大唐不夜城官方) is where the day’s timetable is posted. Caveat: 周周老师 (2026-04) and 旅行7件衣 (2025-09) say the fountain plays at 19:00 and 21:00 (风景如画, 2026-05, repeats the latter’s text almost word for word); 朱小明 (2026-02) found the shows ended by 16:00 against a poster’s list; unnamed commenters say 16:00, 19:00 and 21:00 or none, and that the official account has the day’s timetable. - The roly-poly lady (不倒翁): times vary, queue early. The most popular act is the “roly-poly lady” on the east side of Kaiyuan Square, south of the Wuhou procession sculpture. Posters give different times (19:10 and 20:15; 19:50 and 20:50), so check the day’s timetable and stand in the front row 30 minutes or more beforehand. Caveat: J^ (2026-04) gives 19:10 and 20:15, jun (2025-07, summer timetable) 19:50 and 20:50; 就是本地人 (2025-10) says to arrive 30 minutes early and gives no times. An unnamed commenter (2025-07) says close contact needs booking by scanning a code 50 minutes early, and another stood 40 minutes without reaching the front. - A commercial street with a show, not a theme park. Three 2025–2026 visitors call it a long commercial street with an art museum and concert hall on it: shows last a few minutes at each spot, crowds block the view and hot summer evenings tire people. They advise going only if you are nearby for a play or an exhibition, or going early in the evening. Others say it is a free, atmospheric walk with good night views. Caveat: samsamsam (2026-04), 多财多亿 (2025-07), 加载失败( (2025-04) and, for the positive side, 周周老师 (2026-04). Unnamed commenters split about evenly; one says vendors occupy the best photo spots. - Costumed characters may charge ¥20–25 after a photo. A visitor in August 2025 was approached by a man in a costume and mask who posed beside her daughter for three photos and then asked for ¥25 by QR code. Ask whether it is free before you pose. Caveat: yoyo&yomi爱摸鱼 (2025-08), a single incident. Unnamed commenters report ¥20 at other sites and say you can decline and delete the photo; another (2025-07) paid ¥50 for two photos by the Xuanzang statue because the free spots were taken. source
- Hanfu make-up shops: look in person before you book online. Several 2025–2026 posts complain of hanfu make-up shops on the street: make-up unlike the reference photo, photos not delivered or only half-body, and extra charges once you have paid. Walk past a few shops and compare before you book, and bring your own foundation shade. Caveat: Each post complains about a single shop (not named here); unnamed commenters suggest comparing shops in person and say prices of ¥80–188 including photos were fine for them. Not a survey.
