## Notices in effect

- 2026-09-29 to 2026-11-08: Chaotianmen, Xiaoshizi and Liziba stations began Thai-language arrival announcements as a pilot on 29 September 2026; no end date was announced.

## Why go

Chaotianmen (朝天门) is the old river gate at the tip of the Yuzhong peninsula, where the Jialing River meets the Yangtze. An open-air square with reconstructed walls, a grand stairway and a bronze road zero-point marker links by promenade to Hongyadong. The draw is the view of the two rivers, the Raffles City towers and the night lights; there is no ticketed sight.

## What to do

- **Stand where the two rivers meet.** Go to the river end of the square for the confluence of the Jialing and the Yangtze; a colour split can show on clear days when the water level is right.
- **Find the road zero-point marker.** Look for the road zero-point (零公里) marker on the square, the starting point of Chongqing's roads.
- **Walk the promenade to Hongyadong.** Follow the riverside promenade west, part of the 2.4 km Hongyadong to Huguang Guild Hall route, to reach Qiansimen Bridge and Hongyadong.
- **Stay for the lights.** At 19:30 the front of the peninsula lights up and the promenade fills with people photographing the night view.

- Don't miss: The square is only the outdoor part: Raffles City's viewing deck and the river cruises sell separate tickets.

- Best time: Late afternoon through the 19:30 lights
- Skip if: You dislike steps and wind, or want shelter from midday summer heat; the square has little shade.

## Practical details

- **Hours:** Open-air public square; no closing time posted
  - The outdoor square has no gate; Meet Chongqing (Jul 2026) and a visitor post (Feb 2026, which adds that posted notices take precedence) describe it as open all day. No official source gives opening or closing times. The mall beneath keeps its own hours.
  - The government post lists the open outdoor public areas but gives no opening or closing times; the nearby Yuzhong A-level scenic-area table does not list the square. Meet Chongqing (2026-07-28) and tour-operator guides describe it as open all day, and Chongqing Release describes visitors there after the 19:30 lights.
- **Admission:** No ticket; open public square
  - The Raffles City viewing platforms, river cruises and the shops below the square charge separately; the outdoor square and promenade need no ticket.
- **Booking:** No booking; walk in
  - Passport accepted: not_applicable — There is no gate or ticket check at the open square, so no ID is needed.
  - The government post presents the outdoor public area as open to visitors with no entry step; cruises and the Raffles City deck have their own booking.
- **Last admission:** No last-entry time
- **Time to allow:** 1–2 hr
- **Getting there:** Line 1 Chaotianmen · Exit 2 via Raffles City (mall hours)
  - Metro Line 1 to Chaotianmen (朝天门), Exit 2, about 8 min walk
  - Metro Line 1/6 to Xiaoshizi (小什字), Exit 7 or 8, about 10 min walk
  - Show a taxi driver: 渝中区朝千路1号 朝天门广场
  - Chaotianmen station on Line 1 has Exit 2, which leads a few dozen metres to Raffles City; Gate 8 of the mall opens onto the square. Xiaoshizi (Lines 1 and 6) Exits 7 and 8 are the guide's route toward Chaotianmen, about 10 minutes on foot.
  - After the mall closes at 22:00, walk from Xiaoshizi Exit 7 or 8 (about 10 minutes, per Yuzhong's guide). A 2020 opening report says Chaotianmen Exit 4 meets Zhaoqian Road and a 2025 Qunar listing says Exit 4 leads right to the square; no official 2026 page confirms the exit, so check the station signs.
- **Foreign visitors:** No ticket, booking or ID check at the square

## Traveler tips

- **The square is free and open air.** Chaotianmen Square (朝天门广场) is an open public space at the tip of the Yuzhong peninsula, where the Jialing and Yangtze rivers meet. There is no ticket and no booking step. The outdoor public area that is open to visitors includes the 196 Wengcheng (瓮城), the 180 city-gate passage (城门洞) and the grand stairway (大梯道), and it connects to the riverside promenade. _Caveat: The Chongqing Release post (2025-12-05) lists the open outdoor public areas and mentions no ticketing; the word 'free' appears in tour-operator guides, and no government page states a price. Part of the square was fenced for works from 2021, partly reopened in January 2024, and the full square and promenade were announced open in December 2025, so older English guides may describe it as closed. 枯霜 (30 Sep 2025), 冬心 (2 Dec 2025) and 九街水蜜桃儿～ (26 Feb 2026) describe the square as open all day and free; 九街水蜜桃儿～ adds that the exact hours follow the posted notice. 枯霜's post (30 Sep 2025) is older than twelve months, and 冬心's post reads like generic copy and lists a car park at ¥15 an hour._ (4 travelers) [source](https://meetchongqing.com/raffles-city-and-chaotianmen-square/)
- **Seven exits lead off the square.** The square has seven entrances and exits, which lead to Raffles City and to the riverside road. The promenade along the river has a further eight passages straight down to the water. Pick the one nearest your route rather than walking the whole perimeter. _Caveat: Counts are from Chongqing Release (2025-12-05); the post does not number or name the exits._ [source](https://mp.weixin.qq.com/s/GGpcqg2jEU_YWR5kZtp9XA)
- **Metro Line 1 to Chaotianmen: Exit 2 for the square, Exit 4 for the photo street.** Take Metro Line 1 to Chaotianmen (朝天门) station. Exit 2 comes out a few dozen metres from the Raffles City mall. Walk through the mall and leave by Gate 8 to step onto the square. This only works while the mall is open (10:00–22:00); later, walk from Xiaoshizi station. Exit 4 comes out on the street in front of Raffles City, where crowds queue for the tower photo; it is not the way to the square. Do not set a taxi or map to Raffles City unless you want to end up inside the mall; the Chongqing Hotel bus stop is the street stop. _Caveat: A May 2026 news piece says Exit 2 leads straight into Raffles City; Meet Chongqing (July 2026) describes the passage between Exits 2 and 3 and Gate 8. Station signs decide if exits have been renumbered. 寶貝文文 (24 Jun 2025), luckyovoy (15 Aug 2025), 一只小懒 (27 Nov 2025) and mumu (2 May 2026) name Exit 4 only as the photo spot in front of Raffles City, not as a way to the square. luckyovoy walked through the mall by mistake (lift to level 4 then 5, out of Gate 1) and found it confusing; an anonymous reply (Aug 2026) calls Gate 6 six or seven flights of stairs._ (5 travelers) [source](http://c.m.163.com/news/a/KST787KP0530KB7U.html)
- **Xiaoshizi is the second way in.** From Xiaoshizi (小什字) station on Lines 1 and 6, a municipal guide points to Exits 7 and 8 for Chaotianmen and Dongshuimen Bridge; Exit 8 comes out on an old street. Chongqing Release gives about 10 minutes on foot from Xiaoshizi to the square. _Caveat: The exit guide is from the Yuzhong government account in May 2023, and the 10-minute figure is from Chongqing Release in December 2025; neither names the exact street to follow._ [source](https://www.thepaper.cn/newsDetail_forward_22940591)
- **Walking to Hongyadong: 8 to 10 minutes by the short route, steps on the promenade.** Travel guides say the short route from Raffles City to the top entrance of Hongyadong takes 8 to 10 minutes and is mostly downhill, which beats waiting for a taxi on a holiday. The riverside promenade is part of the 2.4 km Hongyadong to Huguang Guild Hall route and runs from Chaotianmen along the river past Qiansimen Bridge toward Hongyadong; Chongqing Release says that walk takes a little over 20 minutes. One family who walked it in April 2026 had to climb hundreds of steps from Qiansimen Bridge up to the Hongyadong road. _Caveat: The government reports (2025-12-05 and 2026-04-29) describe the 2.4 km route from Hongyadong to Huguang Guild Hall, 15 rest seats and river viewing platforms, and say it was fully connected in early 2026. A family blog (25 April 2026) walked it, reached Qiansimen Bridge and then had to climb hundreds of steps up to the Hongyadong road, and some people turned back at the stairs. Reddit (February 2026): a commenter describes a path beside a road at the docks that runs upstream along the Jialing River to Hongyadong. 山城导游美嘉 (16 Sep 2025, a guide) says 9 minutes for the short route; 风语行旅游重庆希希 (26 Dec 2025, a travel agency) 8 minutes; 瓶瓶不迷路 (17 Oct 2025) 8 minutes; 山城小林哥 (19 Sep 2026, a local guide account) 10 minutes and notes that holiday taxis take over ten minutes to arrive. Anonymous replies say it felt like 19 minutes and that the map sent them to the foot of a staircase instead of the entrance._ (3 travelers) [source](https://jerlene.blogspot.com/2026/04/20-apr-2026-ckg-day-3-exploring.html)
- **The river colour split is not always visible.** The Yangtze and Jialing rivers carry different sediment, so a split-colour line like a yuanyang hot pot can show at the confluence, but only in the right weather and water level. Meet Chongqing recommends the Gateway Park terrace (山城花园) inside Raffles City for a wider look down over the whole square and the meeting of the rivers, use the Gateway Park terrace (山城花园) inside Raffles City, reached by lift from the Chaotianmen atrium. _Caveat: Meet Chongqing (July 2026) says the terrace is higher than the square, shaded and breezy; it is inside the mall rather than on the square, and the post gives no price or access rule for it. A 2026 visitor (25 April 2026) stood at the plaza edge and could not make out the split._ (2 travelers) [source](https://meetchongqing.com/raffles-city-and-chaotianmen-square/)
- **Lights on at 19:30.** After the lights come on at 19:30 the whole front of Chaotianmen glows, and the promenade fills with people shooting the night view. The best viewing spots named for the glow are the middle of the promenade and the far bank of the river. _Caveat: From Chongqing Release (2025-12-05), written about the renovated square and promenade; no later lighting-time notice for the square itself was found._ [source](https://mp.weixin.qq.com/s/GGpcqg2jEU_YWR5kZtp9XA)
- **Saturday drone shows watchable from the square.** The Xinyun Chongqing drone show flies over the two-river core, and Chaotianmen, Jiangbeizui and Nanbin Road are named viewing areas. Shows start at 20:30. Saturdays 17, 24 and 31 October have a show; there is none on 10 October because it is a working day. Rain can change or cancel a show, and police may control traffic and crowds. _Caveat: The October schedule is the show headquarters' notice of 28 September 2026 as republished by a Phoenix Net account; the 20:30 standard time is on the Chongqing government site (2026-05-15). Meet Chongqing (July 2026) says the square is an excellent place to watch._ [source](https://feng.ifeng.com/c/8wnIm08HdOv)
- **Do not fly your own drone.** The square lies inside the Jiangbei airport clearance zone. The show organisers state that flying unapproved drones over Chaotianmen Square, Chongqing Grand Theatre, Sandong Bridge and nearby areas is strictly forbidden. Leave your drone in the bag. _Caveat: Stated in the show headquarters' notice (28 September 2026) republished by a Phoenix Net account; the notice names the airspace restriction, not a fine._ [source](https://feng.ifeng.com/c/8wnIm08HdOv)
- **Reconstructed walls can block the river view.** The crenellated walls around the square are modern reconstructions; the originals were demolished in 1927. After the January 2024 reopening visitors complained that the wall, about 1.6 m high, blocked the view of the river, and the district said it would study lowering it to about 1.2 to 1.3 m. If you cannot see over it, look for an open section of the promenade or a higher terrace. _Caveat: The wall height and the lowering study are from news reports of January 2024; no later report on whether it was lowered was found. China Footprints (2026) still advises looking for lower river angles if the main wall blocks the view._ [source](https://www.thepaper.cn/newsDetail_forward_25975261)
- **Expect stairs, wind and summer heat.** The square and river path involve many steps and little shade, and the riverfront can be windy after sunset. In summer the afternoon stays hot, so a morning visit gives softer light and clearer views, or retreat into the mall until the worst heat passes. Do not carry luggage here without help. _Caveat: Meet Chongqing (July 2026) describes the summer afternoon heat and morning light; the stairs, wind and luggage advice comes from two tour-operator guides (Nihao Chongqing, China Footprints)._ [source](https://meetchongqing.com/raffles-city-and-chaotianmen-square/)
- **Shops below the square are separate.** Beneath the square is Chaotianmen Chengli (朝天门·城里), a 62,000 m2 commercial development of shops, food and a teahouse that moved into operation after the 2025 renewal works. It is separate from the free square, and each shop sets its own hours. _Caveat: The district report (2025-12-26) gives the size and the shift to commercial operation; Meet Chongqing (July 2026) says opening hours vary by shop and recommends the Daqi Teahouse. Hualong Net (2026-04-15) announced that the development would open on 30 April 2026._ [source](https://meetchongqing.com/raffles-city-and-chaotianmen-square/)
- **Shoot the Raffles photo street early.** The railings in front of Raffles City fill up after about 10:00. Before that you can shoot alone. Street photographers with Fuji cameras there ask about ¥20 a photo or about ¥100 for ten, and the price can be negotiated. _Caveat: luckyovoy (Aug 2025) quotes ¥20 per photo or ¥100 for ten and says to bargain; mumu (2 May 2026), a hotel guest next to the street, says it is empty early; 摄影师小东东 (27 Mar 2026), a photographer seller, advises booking and a trial shot beforehand. 寶貝文文 (Jun 2025) gives the best light as 10:00-19:00, with the glass front gold around 17:00-19:00 in clear weather. Prices are from posts._ (2 travelers) [source](https://www.xiaohongshu.com/explore/689f0d12000000001c00a778)
- **A rooftop view at Da Ronghui.** For a view of Raffles City and the river without the crowds, go to the Da Ronghui (大融汇) shopping centre beside Exit 5 or 6 and ride the lift to the top (level 12 of building D). _Caveat: 一只小懒 (27 Nov 2025) is the only source; replies from anonymous users say it was empty then, and one (Mar 2026) asks whether it is still open without an answer. Opening hours of the building were not given._ [source](https://www.xiaohongshu.com/explore/69281d62000000000d03a4ea)
- **Ferry to Danzishi from the Chaotianmen pier.** A short ferry crosses from the Chaotianmen pier to Danzishi on the south bank, and tickets can be bought on the spot. The south-bank side gives a view of the Raffles towers from across the river. _Caveat: 冬心 (Dec 2025) says tickets are sold at the pier; the hotel account 全季重庆两路口地铁站酒店 (2 Jul 2026, commercial) gives ¥5. The operator's price and timetable were not checked._ [source](https://www.xiaohongshu.com/explore/692e7f80000000001e03338c)
