## Notices in effect

- 2026-09-01 to 2026-12-31: Reopened on 1 September 2026 after interior renovation (closed 16 March–31 August); ordinary hours Tue–Sun 08:00–12:00.

## Why go

Chairman Mao Memorial Hall (毛主席纪念堂) is a memorial building in Tiananmen Square with a short, solemn viewing route. It is a distinct visit from walking the square: each visitor needs a timed, real-name reservation and must pass another security check. Expect a quiet, continuously moving line rather than a museum visit where you can linger.

## What to do

- **Enter for the viewing.** Reserve a specific slot, show the same valid identity document at the hall, and pass security before following the viewing line.
- **Follow the memorial rules.** Leave bags, cameras, drinks and other restricted items at the east-side square storage point before entering. Keep your phone silent inside.
- **Combine with the square.** The hall is within Tiananmen Square, but its reservation is separate from the square’s open-space booking. The square authority lists a valid hall reservation among records accepted for square access.

- Don't miss: The storage point for restricted items is on the east side of the square.

- Best time: Reserve before travelling
- Skip if: Skip if you cannot follow the strict item and conduct rules.

  - Passport accepted: yes — The official booking site's ID-type list includes Passport (护照) in both its Chinese and English interface. The site logs in with a mobile number and SMS code and shows no country-code option, so a foreign number may not work.
  - Beijing Bendibao (Aug 2026) reproduces a booking notice with a daily 12:30 release for the sixth day ahead, five visitors per booking and a mainland mobile number requirement; the operator's own notice inside the booking site was not readable, and the operator guide read gives only the 1–6 day window.

## Traveler tips

- **Reserve every person.** Open the official 毛主席纪念堂 WeChat account, reservation mini-program or People.cn memorial page one to six days before visiting. Select the time slot and submit real-name information for everyone, including children and older visitors. [source](https://cpc.people.com.cn/n1/2023/1118/c143528-40121116.html)
- **Bring the booking document.** Arrive at the reserved time and present the valid identity document used for the booking. Staff check the reservation record before admission, so keep the document accessible through security. [source](https://cpc.people.com.cn/n1/2023/1118/c143528-40121116.html)
- **Store bags before the hall.** Bags, cameras, drinks, cups and other liquids are restricted inside the hall. Use the storage point on the east side of Tiananmen Square before joining the memorial queue. [source](https://cpc.people.com.cn/n1/2023/1118/c143528-40121116.html)
- **Keep the visit quiet.** Silence your phone before entering and follow the staff-controlled route. The operator asks visitors to avoid talking loudly, laughing or stopping during the viewing. [source](https://cpc.people.com.cn/n1/2023/1118/c143528-40121116.html)
- **Plan for the morning window.** The published ordinary visiting window is Tuesday through Sunday, 08:00–12:00. Monday is normally closed, while statutory holidays and commemorative days can use a dated special schedule. [source](https://cpc.people.com.cn/n1/2023/1118/c143528-40121116.html)
- **Keep the square and hall distinct.** A booking for Tiananmen Square alone does not admit you to the memorial hall. The square authority accepts a valid hall reservation for square access, so carry that record through the square checkpoint. [source](https://tamgw.beijing.gov.cn/zhengwugongkai/tzgg/202111/t20211119_2541156.html)
- **Use the official enquiry number.** The memorial hall lists a staffed service window and the phone 010-55605013 for individual visitors, with open-day service from 08:00 to 11:30. Use them if the online form gives trouble, including to ask whether your passport and phone number are accepted. _Caveat: Ruqin (a travel agency, updated 5 Mar 2026, before the March–August closure) says foreign visitors without a Chinese phone can ask for a same-day slot at an 'International Visitors Desk' at the hall's southeast corner. The operator pages read do not mention the desk, the operator's booking is 1–6 days ahead with no same-day option, and nothing confirms the desk since the 1 September 2026 reopening. Min (Feb 2026, before the March–August closure) says a yellow booth south of Tiananmen Gate hands out same-day dynamic booking codes at 08:00 each day; this conflicts with the booking notice reproduced by Beijing Bendibao, which accepts bookings 1–6 days ahead, and replies under Min's post say no cart came at 08:00 (anonymous commenter, Feb 2026) and that codes were usually available in winter but the slots are now full (anonymous commenter, Sep 2026), so do not plan around it._ [source](https://ruqintravel.com/china-destination-guides/chairman-mao-memorial-hall-tickets-and-reservation/)
- **Dress for a memorial visit.** Wear neat clothing and follow the hall’s solemn-visit instructions. Security also prohibits dangerous items, so keep the visit light and place restricted belongings in storage first. _Caveat: Jayson (Aug 2025) says shorts, vests, slippers and miniskirts get people stopped, while 夏天不吃宵夜的西兰花 (Aug 2025) says summer shorts were allowed; 夏天, 木鱼哒哒哈 (Jun 2025) and 小卡喵 (Dec 2025) agree that hats and sunglasses come off inside, phones are silenced and photos are banned._ (4 travelers) [source](https://www.xiaohongshu.com/explore/68a07b40000000001d001647)
- **Slots open at 12:30, six days ahead.** The booking notice, as reproduced by Beijing Bendibao (Aug 2026), says slots open daily at 12:30 for up to six days ahead, with one pending booking per account and up to five visitors per booking. Have each visitor's name and passport number ready and submit straight away. _Caveat: The operator's own notice was not read (it loads dynamically inside the booking site), and the operator guide gives only the 1–6 day window. 旅行指北针 (Aug 2026) repeats the same wording and 北京中新旅行 (Sep 2026, a travel agency) is near-identical, so they count as one source. Beijing Bendibao's 2024 article also gives 12:30 and five visitors. Wild Great Wall (Jun 2025, commercial) mentions a chance of extra slots between 07:30 and 08:00. Xiaohongshu authors 李进步 (Jun 2025), Jayson (Aug 2025) and WWJ (Apr 2026) also give a 12:30 release six days ahead; Jayson says not to wait for the last second because slots go almost at once, and 尾大刺球 (Sep 2026) writes 1–5 days ahead. Only WWJ is within the last 12 months, so the release time is not promoted to a field._ (3 travelers) [source](http://bj.bendibao.com/news/2026828/385738.shtm)
- **Plan around the mainland phone number.** The reservation form asks for a mainland Chinese mobile number; Beijing Bendibao (Aug 2026) names China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom and excludes virtual-operator numbers. The official booking site signs in with a mobile number and SMS code and shows no country-code option. If your phone only has a foreign SIM, a Chinese friend can add your passport details under their own account before you travel. _Caveat: No source read reports trying a foreign number since the 1 September 2026 reopening, so whether it is rejected is unconfirmed. The official booking site says: 'Chairman Mao Memorial Hall is free to visit and free to book, and no third-party websites or applications other than the official booking website, WeChat official accounts or WeChat app are authorized to provide free or paid booking services', so use a friend, not an agent._ [source](http://bj.bendibao.com/news/2026828/385738.shtm)
- **Pick passport as the document type.** The reservation form lists passports among the accepted documents, alongside mainland ID cards, military IDs and the Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan travel permits. Enter your passport number exactly as printed and carry the same passport to the hall, because staff check it against the booking. _Caveat: The operator guide says only 'valid identity document'. The official booking site's ID-type list (checked 2026-10-07) includes Passport in its Chinese and English interface; Beijing Bendibao (Apr 2024) and Ruqin (a travel agency) also say passports are accepted. None reports submitting a foreign passport after the September 2026 reopening._ [source](https://bj.bendibao.com/tour/2024418/361004.shtm)
- **Use the southwest security gate.** Tiananmen Square's security gates are numbered. The Beijing government notice of 6 September 2026 advises the southwest gate, number 07, to shorten the wait, and advises arriving with no bags or as few as possible. Check your reserved slot before you leave the hotel. _Caveat: Written for the anniversary week of September 2026 (the government page republished on 7 September what was announced on 6 September); gate numbers and advice may be updated in later notices._ [source](https://www.beijing.gov.cn/fuwu/bmfw/sy/jrts/202609/t20260907_4853117.html)
- **Priority lane for some visitors.** Visitors aged 70 or over, military personnel, disabled visitors and pregnant women can use a priority lane at the hall when they show a valid reservation. Everyone else follows the normal numbered queue. [source](http://bj.bendibao.com/news/2026828/385738.shtm)
- **Sohu guides: join the queue at 08:00.** Two Sohu travel guides advise joining the queue when the hall opens at 08:00; they say the line between 09:00 and 10:00 can take more than an hour. The reserved hour only sets when you may enter. The Tiananmen Square security check comes first, then the hall's own queue. _Caveat: Two Sohu guides (Aug and Sep 2026) use near-identical wording and are one account in effect; the second is a travel agency. Neither gives a measured wait on a given day. Waits on anniversary dates and public holidays are longer._ [source](https://www.sohu.com/a/1069629154_122759396)
- **Check the date on any guide.** The hall closed for interior renovation from 16 March to 31 August 2026 and reopened on 1 September with ordinary hours of 08:00–12:00, Tuesday to Sunday. Booking guides and screenshots from the closure period can be out of date, so use the official WeChat account, mini-program or People.cn page. [source](https://peking.bjd.com.cn/content/s69b3b4a5e4b0cd719e9ef1c2.html)
- **A Reddit commenter's afternoon plan: flag-lowering instead.** A Reddit commenter (polarislin) suggested skipping the hall in the afternoon and watching the flag-lowering at the square instead, with the square entry booked in advance. _Caveat: One commenter's suggestion, not an official arrangement. Comment dates on Reddit are the thread's post date._ [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/travelchina/comments/1rhx2is/8_days_in_beijing_great_wall_universal_imperial/)
- **Fast pass (快通) for the memorial hall: checkpoint 07.** 尾大刺球 (Sep 2026) booked the memorial hall in the mini-program and a 'Tiananmen fast pass' in the 京通 (Jingtong) app, took Line 2 or 8 to Qianmen, left by the south-west Exit C, went through the underground crossing where booking records are checked, and found checkpoint 07 beside a green Mixue sign; arriving at about 10:00 there was nobody ahead. After the fast-pass check you cross the road, show your ID at the hall's queue entrance and pass one more screening. 方圆 (Sep 2026) timed it: 36 minutes from Qianmen Exit C to checkpoint 07, then 24 minutes to store bags on the east side and walk back to the west entrance. _Caveat: The two authors disagree about the sign at the crossing: 方圆 says follow the sign for the fast lane toward the power-company junction, while 尾大刺球 says that sign led to a long slow queue and she turned back to 07. Anonymous commenters add that the fast pass must be booked two days ahead and that early on a weekday it saves little. Whether foreign visitors can use the Jingtong app is not stated._ (2 travelers) [source](https://www.xiaohongshu.com/explore/6aae1ce50000000027014708)
- **Free bag storage on the east side, about two hours.** Bags, water and large items cannot go into the hall. 小卡喵 (Dec 2025) says there is a free deposit on the east side of the square (search 宏都尚城 on the map), usable for about two hours; scan the QR code on the locker, choose store, and scan the code it gives you to collect. Jayson, 木鱼哒哒哈 and 夏天不吃宵夜的西兰花 describe the same free deposit across the road from the hall's queue entrance. The west entrance has none (野蛮生长的Aniya), so people who enter from the west and carry a bag must walk back east. _Caveat: Authors differ on whether power banks are allowed: Jayson says no, a commenter says two were allowed, 木鱼哒哒哈 says the Great Hall does not allow them, so carry as little as possible. The 2-hour limit is the authors' recollection; confirm at the counter._ (5 travelers) [source](https://www.xiaohongshu.com/explore/694fe5e1000000001f00bf07)
- **Allow one and a half to three hours from the metro to the exit.** 李进步 (Jun 2025) left Tiananmen West Exit B at 08:04, passed the square checks almost without queueing and collected her souvenir ticket at 09:18, about 1.5 hours in all; 方圆 (Sep 2026) took 36 + 24 + 29 minutes with the fast pass. Baby girl (Jun 2025) held a 09:30 slot and queued three hours without getting halfway; Jayson advises arriving two hours before your slot because the square security is shared with other visitors; 夏天不吃宵夜的西兰花 (Aug 2025) says entry did not stop at 12:00 but around 12:30 and that arriving early costs nothing. _Caveat: Single-day experiences in different months; Baby girl's queue was on a busy summer day and anonymous commenters on that post describe waits of two to three hours._ (5 travelers) [source](https://www.xiaohongshu.com/explore/684565a8000000000f03ae62)
- **Flowers are optional and a souvenir ticket waits at the exit.** After security there are three or four flower stalls, white chrysanthemums at ¥3 each or ¥9 for three; 野蛮生长的Aniya says single stems are sold only at the first stall and later stalls sell bunches of three. 小卡喵 says you can simply ask for one. After leaving by the south exit, collect the free paper commemorative ticket at the souvenir counter on the left (李进步, 野蛮生长的Aniya). Visiting inside takes only a minute or a few minutes. _Caveat: Prices and stall rules are from 2025 posts; an anonymous commenter on 小卡喵's post (Jan 2026) reports buying two bunches that were already wilting and getting a poor response when trying to exchange them._ (4 travelers) [source](https://www.xiaohongshu.com/explore/684565a8000000000f03ae62)
- **Two missed bookings lock the account for 120 days.** The booking notice, as reproduced by Beijing Bendibao (Aug 2026), treats a booking that is not verified at the hall as a no-show, locks the account after two no-shows within 120 days and restores it once the 120 days have passed. Jayson (Aug 2025) adds that being very late can mean not being admitted, so arrive inside your time window. _Caveat: The operator's own notice was not readable; the rule is quoted from Beijing Bendibao's reproduction and from Jayson, and the 2026 renovation may have changed the system._ [source](http://bj.bendibao.com/news/2026828/385738.shtm)
- **A Dutch visitor reserved and got in.** Finn, a Dutch visitor, reports getting tickets for the memorial hall in November 2024 and entering; the ticket inspector told Finn very few foreigners are seen there. _Caveat: Finn says getting the ticket was harder than elsewhere in Beijing but gives no booking steps, ID type or phone details; the post predates the March–August 2026 renovation._ [source](https://www.xiaohongshu.com/explore/67317b4f000000001d03a07a)
